• The imperative is used to give commands or suggestions. In German, there are two types ofsecond-person commands, formal and informal, and there are singular and plural forms of each.

• The imperative for the formal Sie, whether singular or plural, is the inverted Sie-form of the present indicative.

• To form the du-form of verbs whose stems end in –s or –t (such as lesen or arbeiten), drop the –st or the –t from the present indicative du-form. If the du-form has an Umlaut in the present tense, drop the Umlaut. As with the ihr-form, the pronoun is not used for the imperative of du.

• Verbs whose stem ends in –d, –t, –ig, –m, and –n preceded by a consonant other than -l- or -r-, keep the –e in the imperative. Also, if the infinitive of the verb ends in
–eln, the imperative ending –e must be maintained. With all other verbs, the final –e in the imperative is optional.

• German expresses the first person plural command (Let’s…) by inverting the first person plural present indicative form.

• Impersonal commands are used to convey messages in signs and advertising. Impersonal commands use the du-form of the imperative, the infinitive or the participle of the verb.

• Commands in German are often coupled with mal or doch mal. Mal softens the command when it would otherwise consist of one single word and would sound too harsh. Doch, used alone with a command, conveys friendly encouragement. But when combined with mal, the tone is more pleading. The word bitte is often used in conversational commands.
