THIS EUCHARISTIC FEAST Some things about human nature don’t change, even over the course of centuries. When we celebrate a holiday, we have a meal; when we celebrate a significant event, we have a feast. In today’s first reading, Lady Wisdom is setting a feast, a sign of celebrating the covenant that Israel has with God. Israel’s central remembrance of its saving Exodus covenant is the Passover meal. So it is natural—and not coincidental—that the Christian celebration of the new covenant sealed by the blood of Christ on the cross happens at a meal, our Eucharist, offered first by Jesus in the context of Passover remem-brance. It is easy for us, sometimes, to forget the very long and rich reli-gious and human origins of our eucharistic feasting on the bread and cup that are the Body and Blood of Jesus. Today, and for the next few Sundays that we hear the “Bread of Life” discourse from John, let us bring to mind the loving covenant that God makes with us, and be filled with great joy at this marvelous feast that we have come to attend!

Baptized into our Catholic Faith

August 19, 2018 Child of Aaron & Melissa

Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) is a process of preparing the unbaptized, and those un-formed by Christianity (termed, un-catechized), for acceptance of Christ, of the Catholic Faith, and reception of the Sacraments of Initiation. Full initiation normally concludes with the Easter Vigil (the night before Easter Sunday). The process usually takes a year, although there may exceptions, due to age or infirmity. Catholic initiation (outside of the R.C.I.A.) indicates that a person is already validly baptized, already accepts Christ, and now wishes to be Roman Catholic. This catechesis (learning the Faith) can be adapted to the specific needs and circumstances of the individual. We will begin class sometimes in September, if you know of anyone interesting in learning about the process please let Fr. Shaiju know.

Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time John 6:41-51

Jesus said to the crowds: “I am the living bread that came down from heaven; whoever eats this bread will live forever; and the bread that I will give is my flesh for the life of the world.” The Jews quarreled among themselves, saying, “How can this man give us his flesh to eat?” Jesus said to them, “Amen, amen, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life within you. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him on the last day. For my flesh is true food, and my blood is true drink. Whoever eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me and I in him. Just as the living Father sent me and I have life because of the Father, so also the one who feeds on me will have life because of me. This is the bread that came down from heaven. Unlike your ancestors who ate and still died, whoever eats this bread will live forever.”

Bible Study will resume on Wednesday, September 12th after the 7:00AM Mass in the Parish Center.

4 Twentieth Sunday in Ordinary Time August 19, 2018

September 6th, 7th & 8th Begin saving your items!! This is a huge fundraiser for the Parish. The Parish Hall will be open on Monday, Sept. 3rd, Tues., Sept. 4th and Wed., Sept. 5th from 6:00AM-7:00PM each day. How can you help? First start saving and collecting item to donate and bring them to the Parish Hall on the 3rd-5th. Second, help is needed pricing and organizing the week of the sale. Third, help is needed the days of the sale, checking customers out and helping carry items to their cars if needed. Fourth, help is needed on Saturday, the 8th after the sale boxing up unsold items so they can be donated to area services.

Today’s readings stress the fact that the Holy Eucharist, which perfectly fulfills the symbol of the manna of the Old Testament, is the food that gives us life forever. In Last Sunday’s gospel Jesus declared that the bread he gives is his flesh. This Sunday Jesus asserts that to eat this Bread is to have eternal life. The first and second readings encourage us to turn aside from those things that do not nourish and sustain us and turn towards the divine source: “be filled with the Spirit.” In today’s first reading from the Book of Proverbs, Lady Wisdom,

representing God, offers wisdom and understanding in the form of a rich banquet to all those who are willing to heed her invitation. The early Christians often identified Jesus as the Wisdom of God. They regarded the Eucharist as Wisdom’s banquet, where they shared in the divine wisdom personified by Jesus. In the second reading Paul advises the Gentile Christians to show their gratitude to God for calling them, along with the Jews, to Christianity, and for giving them a share in Christ’s life. They will be able to receive this life by avoiding their former foolish ways, for example, getting drunk on wine. Instead they are to be Spirit-filled and their talk edifying, always trying to discern and do the will of God. In today’s Gospel passage, John emphasizes the eternal-life dimensions of eating Jesus’ body and drinking Jesus’ blood. John asserts that participation in the life of Jesus, the living bread, is the inauguration of our eternal life with God. "Eternal life" is complete and lasting happiness, satisfying our deepest longings and realizing all our dreams. We begin to experience this happiness in this world and enter it completely and forever in heaven. John believes that those who have faith in Jesus have already stepped into heaven in this life, sharing in God’s own life and therefore in eternal life. In the case of the Eucharist, once we start eating and drinking Jesus’ body and blood, we’re there. Our participation in the Eucharist also concretizes and energizes our relationship with Christ and with one another. When we receive the consecrated host we accept a great challenge. We accept the triumphs and the tragedies, joys and the pains necessary to build up the Kingdom of God in that part of the world in which we have been called to serve. As we walk away from the altar we may perhaps hear Jesus saying: "This is my body, given over for you" and "This is my blood, poured out for you”. What a power we would be for our world around us if each one of us could say that and mean it! That is why, at the end of the Mass, we are sent out to love and serve the Lord, reflecting Jesus' love, mercy, forgiveness and spirit of service all around us.

~Message from Nick

Fr. Thomas has asked me to create weekly bulletin articles and before I begin writing I wanted to give an overview of how I hope to use this space. I hope to present one topic in a given month and go into as much depth as possible in the space given. I want to utilize media from the internet and social media that are easily accessible as well as ordering books which compliment the topic for the month. I hope to draw not only from scripture but from 2000 years of documentation and human testing by holy women and men who have lived life and who have come to similar conclusions about these topics I choose engaged them. I want to also approach the topic in such a way that the ideas and realities of faith encounter our lives. Hopefully asking ourselves, How can this topic heal? Where can I challenge myself? How can this lead to a greater sense of joy? I want this space to be something that is life-giving and I welcome any feedback you may have! Thanks!

Parents who have children who are in K-8 Concerning the change of day of PREP: In the spring there were two meetings concerning the day in which PREP would be held for the fall 2018 and spring 2019 catechetical year. In those meetings, there was support for holding PREP on Wednesday evenings. The purposes of this move were oriented around giving more time to families to be with one

another on Sunday's and an opportunity for Father to participate in the catechesis of those participating in PREP. If you have any concerns, please contact Fr. Shaiju or Nick. PREP, Parish Religious Education Program serves the faith formation needs of children of the parish, generally, those outside the Catholic school system, although all are welcome to attend. The program is for Kindergarten through 8th grade. All unconfirmed 8th graders are also in the parish Confirmation program, which is held separately from PREP. New to this year we’re working on implementing a meal for the children, teachers, and parents that will be served at 6:00 p.m Wednesdays in the parish hall followed by 60 min Catechetical session ending at 7:30 pm. These sessions are facilitated by dedicated parish volunteers, and PREP will go from the 1st Wednesday in September to the first Wednesday in May. PREP begins Wednesday, September 5th. One week before there will be a parent meeting on Wednesday, August 29th at 6:30pm. Registration sheets (one per child) are on the tables in the back of the church, but also can be found on the facebook page or on the parish website. Please return soon, by mail, in person, or they can be placed in the collection baskets. And there is room for more helpers as well! PREP volunteers are exempt from PREP fees for the family. PREP parent handbooks and schedules are almost ready, so be watching for them soon!

Parents who have children of age to be confirmed There will be a short meeting with Parents on Wednesday, August 29th at 6:00pm in the parish hall.

Looking for volunteers to cook for PREP PREP will be starting soon and as you may know, the meetings will be held on a new day and there is a new option for the kids to have dinner before the classes begin. In order to accomplish this, we will be needing at least 3 volunteers per meal to prepare, cook and help clean up after the meal is served. We preparation begins around 5:00 pm (depending on the meal), serve at 6:00 pm and we will begin to clean up around 6:25 pm. If you're interested you can contact Nick Higdon at the office or fill out the sign-up sheet in the back of the Church. Thank you so much for the generosity of your time!
