Feet On The Ground “Until next week, keep your feet on the ground and keep reaching for the stars!” Not today’s scriptural wisdom, but legendary DJ Casey Kasem’s sage advice, heard across America for generations, American Top 40’s challenging sign-off. Though Casey wasn’t quoting scripture, today’s Acts of the Apostles offers similar advice. As Jesus ascended, disciples “were looking intently at the sky.” Wouldn’t we prefer a soul-relaxing gaze into peaceful blue skies to a heartbreaking focus on this bloodstained earth? But heavenly questioners asked Jesus’ first disciples, “Why are you standing there looking at the sky?” Earth awaited their mission! While our hearts should “keep reaching for” heaven, we need to “keep our feet on the ground.” Ascension’s scriptures and the Jubilee of Mercy remind us: the Jesus we revere as “ascended into heaven” lives right here among us on earth, awaiting our recognition and loving service. The Ascension of the Lord

Today we celebrate Jesus’ return to heaven. If we struggle to know how to feel about this event, we take our cue from Jesus’ disciples. These disciples are first-hand witnesses to the Ascension, returning afterword to Jerusalem, where “they were continually in the temple praising God.” Long-time com-panions of the Lord, they surely feel the pain of physical sepa-ration from Jesus. Yet they praise God continually. They accept God’s plan, looking forward to the day when Christ will come again. As our reading from Hebrews affirms, Christ will return to “bring salvation to those who eagerly await him.” This Good News is almost too much to take in; the Acts of the Apostles explains that an angel has to wake the disciples from their stupor, reminding them to start the Lord’s work. Today’s readings are our own angel, sending us forth in joyful hope.

Here’s What Happened The Acts of the Apostles and Luke’s Gospel use the

same word, witnesses, to describe the disciples’ role in the new world order. In our culture, a witness can be passive, a mere onlooker, or more active, a formal expert who provides sworn testimony in a trial. The Greek word for witness is martyr. That raises the stakes for the disciples. They watch Jesus float into the air, after which an angel plainly appears to them and promises them that Jesus will come again. They see this happen. Immediately before ascending, Jesus makes a promise to them: “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses . . . to the ends of the earth.” Their mission is not a superficial task to confirm the idle rumor that Jesus really floated in mid-air. No, they must be willing to swear—even with their lives—that Jesus is the Christ who accepted an agonizing crucifixion on our behalf, rose from the dead, ascended into heaven, and promised to come again to offer final salvation.

Truth Matters Why would anyone be willing to die for that story? Why would anyone accept martyrdom just to make sure no one fiddles with the facts of Jesus’ life? Tradition tells us, in fact, that all but one of the Twelve died as martyrs. These witnesses knew that Jesus’ story is sacred, unique, and powerful—and that we have to get it right. We have to understand that Jesus is God, and that he actually conquered sin for us by dying on a cross. No other story can give us the kind of hope that Jesus’ Good News does. And the story is true. Countless witnesses have died to transmit the saving legacy of Jesus Christ. We have inherited the truth. Every day, we take our place in the story, bringing hope to a needy world.

Sunday, June 2, 2019 Dear brothers and sisters in Christ Jesus: Many blessings to all of you and may our Lord Jesus and Mother Mary be in your homes shining their light and love on you every day.

The solemn feast of the Ascension is celebrated shortly before the end of the Easter season, and it reminds us of the rise of the Son of God to the right side of the Father, to complete his saving mission and give us the gift He has promised. In these last days, we find words in Jesus’ message of farewell, that make us feel nostalgic, but at the same time He does it with joyful hope and kindness to the human race. For me, it means that, after having been baptized and having listened to the Gospel message, we cannot just stay back; on the contrary, it is a call to take responsibility, to Christian action. When Jesus rises before the eyes of His disciples, they remain looking at the sky, and this is good - it reminds us to pray, to contemplate, and to remain calm with the various situations of life. Then the Angel that appears before them reminds them, and reminds us that after contemplating, we must go to fulfill our responsibility in our occupations and the duties of the criteria of the Gospel. We cannot say that we have faith and that we believe in God without being examples to others, in our treatment of everyone and in our testimony of life (Acts 1:1-11). As we wait until He comes again, it is not a commitment to do good things, but if it is our duty to live according to our faith, each one of us is responsible, as a member of the Church, to live and express the faith we received as a gift from Jesus, to love and appreciate life in the way we respect it, to give each person their space and to feel loved in a special way by our Father in Heaven, to live with gratitude for all that we have received and to be good stewards of every blessing we have received. We must remain attentive to what God asks of us in our family environment, in our place of work, in our relationship with others and in our responsibility of putting a grain of sand for a better society, attentively contemplating the mysteries of God and working to get to know each other better (Luke 24: 46-53). The person who is trustworthy in very small matters

is also trustworthy in great ones; and the person who is dishonest in very small matters

is also dishonest in great ones (Luke 16:10).

Your work may be small and your heart small, your work may be big and your heart big, your work may be big and your heart small, or your work may be small and your heart big.

Let yourself be wholehearted in the smallest thing you do. To be faithful in big things is easy, but to be faithful in small things is difficult. Our Lord praised those who were faithful in little things.

Viewed through the eyes of "the world," Mary's work was very ordinary: her assistance to Elizabeth, her care and concern for the infant Jesus in the manger, her duties at Nazareth, her journey to Jerusalem to worship in the temple, the burial of Joseph, the suffering and humiliation which she endured on Calvary...but from a supernatural perspective her life was extraordinary, because everything she did was done for the love of Jesus.

Lễ Chúa Thăng Thiên được cử hành không lâu trước khi mùa Phục Sinh đi qua, điều này cũng nhắc nhở chúng ta nơi vĩnh cửu của Ngài bên cạnh Đức Chúa Cha, chu toàn sứ mệnh cứu rỗi và ban cho chúng ta món quà Ngài đã hứa. Từ lời tạm biệt của Chúa Giê-su trong những ngày này, chúng ta cảm thấy nỗi niềm luyến tiếc nhưng đồng thời Đấng Cứu Thế cũng mang đến sự hân hoan, đầy tràn hy vọng, thương mến đổ tràn lên nhân loại.

Đối với tôi, điều đó có nghĩa là sau khi được rửa tội và khi tôi lắng nghe lời giáo huấn Phúc Âm, chúng ta không thể đình hoãn, mà trái lại đó là lời kêu gọi người Kitô hửu nhận lãnh việc thực hành trách nhiệm. Khi Chúa Giê-su lên trời trước những đôi mắt của các Môn đệ Ngài, họ đã đứng lặng dõi theo nhìn mãi trên bầu trời cho đến khi Ngài khuất dạng, và điều này thật ý nghĩa – vì nó nhắc nhở chúng ta nên luôn cầu nguyện, chiêm ngắm và giữ sự trầm tĩnh trước mọi tình huống xảy đến trong cuộc đời. Khi Vị Thiên Thần hiện ra trước mặt các môn đệ và nhắc nhủ họ thì đồng thời cũng nhắc nhủ chúng ta rằng sau khi suy ngẫm, chúng ta phải lên đường hoàn thành trách nhiệm chúng ta nhận lãnh, trong sứ mạng với lòng yêu kính mệnh lệnh của Tin Mừng. Chúng ta không thể nói rằng chúng ta có đức tin và chúng ta tin vào Chúa mà không cần nêu gương lành cho người khác, cách đối đãi cư xử với mọi người và là chứng ngôn trong cuộc sống (Cv: 1-11).

Trong khi chúng ta chờ đợi ngày Chúa đến, không phải chỉ là sự cam kết thực hành việc tốt lành nhưng nếu đó là bổn phận để chúng ta sống theo đức tin của mình, thì mỗi người chúng ta đều có trọng trách khi làm một thành viên của Giáo hội, sống và bày tỏ đức tin mà chúng ta nhận được là món quà từ Chúa Giêsu, để yêu thương và trân trọng cuộc đời theo cách chúng ta tôn trọng nó, để cho mỗi người được nhận phần dành cho mình và cảm thấy được yêu thương một cách đặc biệt bởi Cha của chúng ta trên Thiên Đàng, để sống với lòng tri ân cho tất cả những gì chúng ta đã và đang nhận được và là người quý trọng, cảm tạ mọi phước lành nhận lãnh đó. Estimados hermanos y hermanas en Cristo Jesús:

Muchas bendiciones para todos ustedes, y que el Señor Jesús y nuestra Madre María estén en sus hogares cada día con su luz y amor.

La fiesta solemne de la Ascensión la celebramos poco antes de terminar el tiempo Pascual, y nos recuerda la subida del Hijo de Dios a la derecha del Padre para completar su misión salva-dora y enviar el regalo que ha prometido. En estos últimos días encontramos en el mensaje de Jesús palabras de despedida, que hacen sentir nostalgia, pero al mismo tiempo lo hace con una alegre esperanza y conveniencia para el género humano.

Para mí, significa que después de habernos bautizado y escu-chado el mensaje del Evangelio, no podemos quedarnos con los brazos cruzados, por el contrario es un llamado a la respon-sabilidad, a la acción cristiana. Cuando Jesús se eleva ante los ojos de sus discípulos, ellos se quedan contemplando al cielo, y es bueno, nos recuerda orar, contemplar, y quedarnos quietos ante las situaciones de vida, y el Ángel que aparece ante ellos, les recuerda y nos recuerda que después de contemplar hay que ir a la vida a cumplir responsablemente con nuestras ocupacio-nes y deberes con los criterios del Evangelio. No podemos de-cir que tenemos fe y que creemos en Dios sin mostrarlo ante los demás, con nuestro trato y testimonio de vida. (Hechos de los Apóstoles 1:1-11).

Mientras Él viene de nuevo no es un compromiso hacer cosas buenas, pero si es un deber vivir de acuerdo a nuestra fe, hacer lo que a cada uno le corresponde como miembro de la Iglesia, vivir y expresar la fe recibida como regalo de Jesús, amar y apreciar la vida en la manera que la respetamos y damos su lugar a cada persona, sentirnos amados de manera especial por el Padre del Cielo, vivir con agradecimiento de todo lo recibido y ser buenos administradores de toda bendición recibida.

Hay que permanecer atentos a lo que Dios nos pide allí en el ambiente de la familia, en el lugar del trabajo, en la relación con los demás y en la responsabilidad de poner un granito de arena por una sociedad mejor, atentos contemplando los miste-rios de Dios y trabajando por que se conozcan. (Lucas 24: 46-53).

Pies en el Piso

“¡Hasta la próxima semana, mantén tus pies en el suelo y sigue buscando las estrellas!” Hoy no es la sabidu-ría bíblica, sino el sabio consejo del legendario DJ Casey Kasem, escuchado por generaciones a lo largo y ancho de Estados Uni-dos por generaciones, el desafiante cierre de los Top 40 de Estados Unidos. Aunque Casey no citaba las Escrituras, hoy los Hechos de los Apóstoles ofrecen un consejo parecido. Cuando Jesús ascendió, los discípulos “miraban fijamente el cielo”. ¿No preferiríamos una mirada relajante del alma en un cielo azul tranquilo hasta un enfoque descorazonador en una tierra manchada de sangre? Pero los interlocutores celestiales preguntaron a los primeros discípulos, ¿por qué están parados ahí mirando el cielo? ¡La tierra espera su misión! Mientras nuestros corazones deben “seguir buscando en el cielo”, noso-tros necesitamos “mantener nuestros pies en la tierra”. Los pasajes de la Ascensión y el jubileo de la misericordia nos recuerdan, el Jesús que veneramos cuando “ascendió al cielo” vive aquí mismo en medio de nosotros en la tierra, esperando nuestro reconocimiento y servicio amoroso. Tradiciones de Nuestra Fe

El 25 de abril la Iglesia conmemora a Pedro de Betan-cur (1626-1667). Originalmente de las Islas Canarias, a la edad de 24, se trasladó a Cuba. En 1651 llegó a Guatemala con la ambición de predicar a Cristo. Esto lo hizo, no como sacerdote ni religioso. El fue como laico, reconociendo su deber bautis-mal de evangelizar. En 1655 ingresó en la Orden Seglar Franciscana y como laico quiso poner en práctica la espiritualidad francisca-na, ayudando a los pobres. Sin su propio pan o casa el alimen-taba al hambriento y amparaba al indigente. A todos recordaba la necesidad de la salvación y en la simplicidad de su mensaje derretía el egoísmo de los ricos. Les abría el corazón enseñán-doles a compartir con los más pequeños de sus hermanos y hermanas. Eventualmente su nobleza de espíritu atrajo a hombres y mujeres que deseaban compartir su apostolado y fundó la Orden Betlehemita. También fundó la primera escuela de niños en Centro América convirtiéndose en el alfabetizador de Gua-temala. Lecturas de Hoy Domingo

Segunda lectura — Que el Padre de la gloria del Espíritu de sabiduría y revelación (Efesios 1:17-23) o Hebreos 9:24-28; 10:19-23. Evangelio — Los discípulos fueron testigos de todos los sucesos de la vida de Cristo. (Lucas 24:46-53).

Grupo de Oración Resurrección y Vida

Invitamos a la comunidad a compartir con el Grupo de Oración Resurrección y Vida todos los miércoles a partir de las 7:00 pm en la iglesia. Nos reunimos para aprender más de la palabra, dar gracias a nuestro Padre Dios por las maravillas que hace, venimos a ofrecerle alabanzas y también tenemos conferencistas que los invitamos a darnos testimonios de fe, esperanza y caridad.

Oración Para la Generosidad (San Ignacio de Loyola) Señor, Jesús, enséñanos a ser generosos, a servirte como Tú lo mereces, a dar sin medida, a combatir sin temor a las heridas, a trabajar sin Descanso, sin esperar ninguna recompensa, al saber que hemos cumplido con Tú santa voluntad. Amén.

La Ascensión del Señor

Aquí está lo que pasó:

El libro de los Hechos de los Apóstoles y el Evange-lio de Lucas utilizan la misma palabra, testigos, para describir el papel de los discípulos en el nuevo orden mundial. En nues-tra cultura, un testigo puede ser alguien pasivo, un simple observador o, por otro lado, alguien más activo, un experto formal que provee un testimonio bajo juramento en un juicio. La palabra griega para testigo es mártir. Eso eleva los desafíos para los discípulos. Ellos observan a Jesús flotar en el aire, después de eso un ángel claramente se les aparece y les prome-te que Jesús volverá otra vez. Ellos ven que esto ocurre. Inme-diatamente antes de la ascensión, Jesús les promete que “recibirán el poder cuando el Espíritu Santo venga sobre ellos y serán sus testigos . . . , hasta los confines de la tierra”. Su misión no es una tarea superficial para confirmar el rumor ocioso que Jesús verdaderamente flotaba en medio del aire. No, ellos deben desear jurar, aun con sus vidas, que Jesús es el Cristo que aceptó una crucifixión agonizante a causa nuestra, resucitó de la muerte, ascendió al cielo y prometió venir otra vez para ofrecernos la salvación final.

La Verdad Importa:

¿Por qué alguien desearía morir por esta historia? ¿Por qué alguien aceptaría el martirio solo para asegurarse que nadie juega con los hechos de la vida de Jesús? La Tradición nos dice, de hecho, que todos murieron como mártires, menos uno. Estos testigos sabían que la historia de Jesús es sagrada, única y poderosa, y que tenemos que entenderla bien. Tene-mos que entender que Jesús es Dios, y que él de hecho con-quista el pecado por nosotros al morir en la cruz. Ninguna otra historia puede darnos el tipo de esperanza como la Buena Nue-va que Jesús nos da. Y la historia es verdadera. Testigos incon-tables han muerto por transmitir el legado salvífico de Jesu-cristo. Hemos heredado la verdad. Cada día, tomamos nuestro lugar en la historia, trayendo esperanza a un mundo necesitado.

San Bonifacio

Martirologio Romano: Memoria de san Bonifacio, obispo y mártir. Monje en Inglaterra con el nombre de Wifrido por el bautismo, al llegar a Roma el papa san Gregorio II lo ordenó obispo y cambió su nombre de pila por el de Bonifacio, enviándolo después a Germania para anunciar la fe de Cristo a aquellos pueblos, donde logró ganar para la religión cristiana a mucha gente. Rigió la sede de Maguncia

(Mainz) y, hacia el final de su vida, al visitar a los frisios en Dokkum, consumó su martirio al ser asesinado por unos paganos. († 754) Durante tres años recorrió gran parte del territorio germánico. Los Sajones correspondieron con entusiasmo a su predicación. El Papa lo llamó a Roma, lo consagró obispo y le dio el nuevo nombre de Bonifacio. Durante el viaje de regreso a Alemania, en un bosque de Hessen, hizo derribar un gigantesco roble al que los pueblos paganos le atribuían poderes mágicos, porque decían que era sede de un dios. Ese gesto fue considerado co-mo un desafío a la divinidad y los paganos corrieron para presenciar la venganza del dios ofendido. Bonifacio aprovechó la ocasión para transmitirles el mensaje evangélico. A los pies del roble derribado hizo construir la primera iglesia, que dedicó a San Pedro.

Oh Jesus, our great High Priest, hear our humble prayers on behalf of your priest,

Father Victor. Give him a deep faith,

a bright and firm hope, and a burning love

which will ever increase in the course of his priestly life. In his loneliness, comfort him; in his sorrows, strengthen him;

in his frustration, point out to him that it is through suffering that the soul is purified.

Show him that he is needed by the Church, he is needed by souls,

he is needed for the work of redemption. Oh loving Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother of Priests,

take to your heart your son Victor who is close to you

because of his priestly ordination, and because of the power

which he has received to carry on the work of Christ

in a world which needs him so much. Be his comfort, be his joy,

be his strength, and especially help him to live

and to defend the ideals of consecrated celibacy.
