SIPROTEC 7SD52Multi-End Differential Protection Relay for Two to Six Line Ends

The 7SD522/523 relay provides full schemedifferential protection and incorporates allfunctions usually required for the differen-

tial protection of transmission lines. It isdesigned for all transmission and distribu-tion levels and protects lines with two upto six line ends. The relay is designed toprovide fast and phase-selective fault clear-ance. The relay uses fiber-optic cables ordigital communication networks toexchange telegrams and includes specialfeatures for the use in multiplexed com-munication networks. Also pilot wires canbe used with an external converter. Thiscontributes towards improved reliabilityand availability of the electrical powersystem.

The 7SD522/523 is suitable for single andthree-phase tripping applications for twoup to six line ends. Also, transformers andcompensation coils within the differentialprotection zone are protected as are serialand parallel-compensated lines and cables. The relays may be employed with any typeof system earthing.

The units measure the delay time in thecommunication networks and adaptivelymatch their measurements accordingly.

A special GPS-version allows the use of therelays in communication networks, wherethe delay time in the transmit and receivepath may be quite different.

The serial interfaces of the differentialrelays can flexibly be adapted to therequirements of communication networksor multi-mode and mono-mode FOconnection. If the communication method is changed, flexible retrofitting of communicationmodules to the existing configuration ispossible.

TypicalapplicationsSIPROTEC 7SD52 is especially designedfor two and more line ends (up to 6). Onthe TAP-line, the 7SD52 differential relayis connected to current (CT) and option-ally voltage (VT) transformers. For the dif-ferential functions only CTs are necessary.A connection to the VTs improves the fre-quency measurement and offers increasedinformation, such as fault records withvoltages.

Connection techniques and housing withmany advantages

1/2 and full-rack sizes: These are the avail-able housing widths of the SIPROTEC 47SD522/523 relays, referred to a 19" mod-ule frame system. The height is a uniform243 mm (9.57 inches) for all housingwidths.

The link to the other relays is made bymulti-mode or mono-mode FO cables. There are 4 optical modules available,

which correspondingly cover: 820 nm, up to 1.5 km,multi-mode

    820 nm, up to 35 km, multi-mode

    1300 nm, up to 10 km, mono-mode

    1300 nm, up to 35 km, mono-mode

Direct fiber-optic connection offers high-speed data exchange with 512 kbit/s andimproves the speed of the differentialconfiguration.

At the main line two differential relays areconnected to CTs. The communication is

made via a multiplexed communicationnetwork. The 7SD52 offers many featuresto reliably and safely handle data

    exchange via communication networks.

Depending on the bandwidth available inthe communication system 64, 128 or512 kbits/s can be selected for the X21(RS422) interface; the G703.1 interfaceworks with 64 kbits/s.

The connection to the communicationdevice is effected via cost-effective 820 nminterface with multi-mode FO cables. Acommunication converter converts the op-tical to electrical signals. This offers an in-terference-free and isolated connectionbetween the relay and the communication

    device.

    Differential protection

The differential protection function hasthe following features:

Measurements are performed separatelyfor each phase; thus the trip sensitivity isindependent of the fault type.

An adaptive, sensitive measurementmethod with high sensitivity for differen-tial fault currents below the rated currentoffers the detection of highly resistivefaults. This trip element uses special fil-ters, which offers high security even withhigh level DC-components in the short-circuit current. The trip time of this stageis about 30 ms.

A high-set differential trip stage whichclears differential fault currents higherthan the rated current within 10 15 msoffers fast tripping time and high-speedfault clearence time.

When a long line or cable is switched on,transient charge currents load the line.To avoid a higher setting of the sensitivedifferential trip stage, this setpoint maybe increased for a settable time. This of-

fers greater sensitivity under normal loadconditions.

With the setting of the CT-errors the re-lay automatically calculates the re-straint/stabilization current and adaptsits permissible sensitivity according theCTs data in the differential configura-tion, optimizing sensitivity.

Different CT ratios at the line ends arehandled inside the relay. The mismatchof 1 to 6 is allowed.

The differential protection trip can becombined with an overcurrent pickup. Thus differential current and overcur-rent lead to a final trip decision.

Easy to set tripping characteristic.Because the relay works adaptively, onlythe setpoint IDiff> (sensitive stage) andIDiff>> (high-set current differentialstage) must be set according to thecharge current of the line/cable.

Differential and restraint currents aremonitored continuously during normaloperation and are displayed as opera-

    tional measurements.

High stability during external faults evenwith different current transformers satu-ration level. For an external fault, only

5 ms saturation-free time are necessaryto guarantee the stability of the differen-tial configuration.

With transformers or compensation coilsin the protection zone, the sensitive tripstage can be blocked by an inrush detec-tion function. It works with the secondharmonic of the measured current whichis compared with the fundamental com-ponent.

With transformers in the protectionzone, vector group adaptation and

matching of different CT ratios arecarried out in the relay. Additionally, thezero-sequence current flowing through aearthed neutral is eliminated from thedifferential measurement. The 7SD52therefore works like a transformer differ-ential relay, whereas the line ends may befar away.

    Enhanced communication features forcommunication networks

The data required for the differentialcalculations are cyclically exchanged infull-duplex mode in form of synchronous,

serial telegrams between the protectionunits. The telegrams are secured with CRCcheck sums, so that transmission errors ina communication network are immedi-ately detected.

Data communication is immune toelectromagnetic interference becausefiber-optic cables are employed in thecritical region.

Supervision of each individual incomingtelegram and of the entire communica-tion path between the units without

    additional equipment.

Unambiguous identification of each unitis ensured by assignment of a settablecommunication address within a differ-ential protection topology. Only thoseunits mutually known to each other cancooperate. Incorrect interconnection ofthe communication links results inblocking of the protection system.

Detection of reflected telegrams in thecommunication system.

Detection of delay time changes in

    communication networks.

Measurement of the delay time to theremote line ends with dynamic compen-sation of the delay in the differentialmeasurement. Supervision of the maxi-mum permissible delay time is included.

Generation of alarms on heavilydisturbed communication links. Faultytelegram counters are available asoperational measurement.

With a GPS high precision 1s pulse from aGPS receiver the relayscanbe synchro-nized with an absolute, exact time at eachline end. In this way the delay in the receiveandtransmitpath can be measuredexactly. With this optional feature the relay canbeused in communication networks wherethis delay times arequite different.

    Phase-selective intertrip and remotetrip/indications

Normally the differential fault current iscalculated for each line end nearly at thesame time. This leads to fast and uniformtripping times. Under weak infeed condi-tions, especially when the differential func-tion is combined with an overcurrentpickup a phase-selective intertrip offers atripping of all line ends.

7SD52 has 4 intertrip signals which aretransmitted in high-speed (< 20 ms) tothe other line ends. These intertrip signalscan also be initiated by an external relayvia binary inputs and therefore be used toindicate, for example, a directional deci-sion of the backup distance relay.

In addition, 4 high-speed remote tripsignals are available, which may be initi-ated by an external or internal event.

24 remote signals can be freely assignedto inputs and outputs at each line endand are circulating between the differentdevices.

    Communication topologies / modes ofoperation

The differential relays may work in a ringor daisy chain line topology. Use of a testmode offer advantages under commission-ing and service conditions.

The system tolerates the loss of one dataconnection in a ring topology. The ringtopology is rerouted within 20 ms form-ing then a chain topology, while the dif-ferential protection function isimmediately reactivated.

When the communication connectionsneed to be reduced or when these are notavailable, the whole system is able tofunction without interruption as chaintopology. At the line ends only cost-effective 7SD522 relays are necessary forthis application.

The two-end line is a special case, be-cause when the main connection is inter-rupted, the communication switchesover from a main path to a secondarypath. This standby transmission functionensures a high availability of the systemand protects differential protectionagainst communication route failure onimportant lines.

In a ring topology, one line end can belogged out from the differential protec-tion topology for service or maintenancereasons by a signal via binary input.Checks for the breaker position and loadcurrent are made before this logout is ini-tiated. In a chain topology, the relays atthe end of the line can be logged out fromthe differential protection topology.

The whole configuration can be set up

into a test mode. All functions and indi-cations are available except the breakersare not tripped. The local relay can betested and no trip or intertrip reaction iseffected by the other relays.

    Thermal overload protection (ANSI49)

A built-in overload protection with a cur-rent and thermal alarm stage is providedfor the thermal protection of cables andtransformers.

The trip time characteristics are exponen-tial functions according to IEC 60255-8.

The preload is thus considered in the triptimes for overloads.

An adjustable alarm stage can initiate analarm before tripping is initiated.

    Backupovercurrent protection(ANSI 50,50N, 51,51N)

The 7SD522/523 provides a backupovercurrent protection. Two definite-timestages and one inverse-time stage (IDMT)are available, separately for phase currentsand for the neutral (residual) current. Twooperating modes are selectable. The func-tion can run in parallel to the differentialprotection or only for backup during inter-ruption of the protection communication.

The following ANSI/IEEE inverse-timecharacteristics are available:

    Inverse

    Short inverse

    Long inverse

    Moderately inverse

    Very inverse

    Extremely inverse

    Definite inverse

    Breaker failure protection (ANSI50BF)

The 7SD52 relay incorporates a two-stagebreaker failure protection to detect thefailure of tripping command execution, forexample due to a defective circuit-breaker.The current detection logic is phase-segregated and can therefore also be usedin single-pole tripping schemes. If the faultcurrent is not interrupted after a settabletime delay has expired, a retrip commandor a busbar trip command is generated. The breaker failure protection can be initi-ated by all integrated protection functionsas well as by external devices via binaryinput signals.

    STUB bus overcurrent protection(ANSI 50(N)-STUB)

The STUB bus overcurrent protection is aseparate definite-time overcurrent stage. Itcan be activated from a binary input sig-nalling that the open line isolator (discon-nector) is open.

Separate settings are available for phaseand earth (ground) faults.

    Instantaneous high-speed switch-onto-fault overcurrent protection(ANSI 50HS)

Instantaneous tripping is possible whenenergizing a faulty line. On definitelarge-fault currents, the high-speedswitch-onto-fault overcurrent stage caninitiate very fast 3-pole tripping.

With lower fault currents, instantaneoustripping after switch-onto-fault is also pos-sible if the breaker positions at the lineends are monitored and connected to therelays. This breaker position monitor of-fers a high-speed trip during switch-onto-fault conditions.

The switch-onto-fault initiation can be de-

tected via the binary input manual closeor automatically via measurement.

    Auto-reclosure (ANSI79)

The 7SD522/523 relay is equipped with anauto-reclosure function (AR). The func-tion includes several operating modes:

3-pole auto-reclosure for all types offaults; different dead times are availabledepending on the type of fault.

    1-pole auto-reclosure for 1-phase faults,no reclosure for multi-phase faults.

    1-pole auto-reclosure for 1-phase faultsand for 2-phase faults without earth-fault current.

    1-pole auto-reclosure for 1-phase and3-pole auto-reclosure for multi-phasefaults.

    Multiple-shot auto-reclosure.

Interaction with an external protectionrelay for auto-reclosure via binary inputsand binary outputs.

Control of the integrated AR function byexternal protection.

Adaptive auto-reclosure. Only one lineend is closed after the dead time. If thefault persists this line end is switched off.Otherwise the other line ends are closedvia a command over the communicationlinks. This avoids stress when heavy faultcurrents are fed from all l ine ends again.

    Supervision by an externalsynchro-check.

    Monitoring of the circuit-breakerauxiliary contacts.

    Voltage check for discrimination be-

    tween successful and non-successfulreclosure attempts.

In addition to the above-mentioned oper-ating modes, several other operatingmodes can be performed by means of theintegrated programmable logic (CFC).

    Current transformer/ Monitoringfunctions

The 7SD522/523 relay provides compre-hensive monitoring functions coveringboth hardware and software. Furthermore, the measured values are continuouslychecked for plausibility. Thus the current

transformers are also included in thismonitoring system.

A broken wire between the CTs and relayinputs under load may lead to malopera-tion of a differential relay if the load cur-rent exceeds the differential setpoint. The7SD52 provides fast broken wire super-vision which immediatelly blocks all lineends if a broken wire condition is mea-sured by a local relay. This avoidsmaloperation due to broken wire condi-tion. Only the phase where the broken wireis detected is blocked. The other phases

remain under differential operation.Additional measurement supervisionfunctions are

    Symmetry of currents

    Summation of phase/neutral currents

    Phase-sequence supervision of currents

    Trip circuitsupervision(ANSI74TC)

One or two binary inputs for each circuit-

breaker pole can be used for monitoringthe circuit-breaker trip coils including theconnecting cables. An alarm signal is is-sued whenever the circuit is interrupted.

    Lockout(ANSI 86)

All binary outputs can be stored like LEDsand reset using the LED reset key. Thelockout state is also stored in the event ofsupply voltage failure. Reclosure can onlybe issued after the lockout state is reset.

    Local measured values

The measured values are calculated fromthe measured current and voltage signalsalong with the power factor (cos ), thefrequency, the active and reactive power.Measured values are displayed as primaryor secondary values or in percent of thespecific line rated current and voltage. Therelay uses a 20 bit high-resolution AD con-verter and the analog inputs are factory-calibrated, so a high accuracy is reached. The following values are available for mea-sured-value processing:

    Currents 3 xIphase, 3 I0, IE

    Voltages 3 xVphase-earth,3 xVphase-phase,3 V0,Ven

    Symmetrical components I1, I2, V1, V2

Availability of the data-connection to theremote line ends per minute and per hour

Regarding delay time measuring with theGPS-version the absolute time for trans-mit and receive path is displayed sepa-rately.

Measured values at remote line ends

Every two seconds the currents and volt-ages are freezed at the same time at allline ends and transmitted via the commu-nication link. At a local line end thereforecurrents and voltages are thus availablewith their amount and phases (angle)locally and remotely. This allows checkingthe whole configuration under load condi-tions. In addition, the differential andrestraint currents are also displayed.Important communication measurements, such as delay time or faulty telegrams perminute/hour are also available as measure-

    ments.

    Commissioning

Special attention has been paid to commis-sioning. All binary inputs and outputs canbe displayed and activated directly. Thiscan simplify the wiring check significantly

    for the user.

Furthermore, all currents and optionalvoltages and phases are available via com-munication link at the local relay and aredisplayed in the relay, with DIGSI 4 or aspecial commissioning program runningin a standard browser (Internet Exploreror Netscape Navigator).

The operational and fault events and faultrecords from all line ends share a commontime tagging which allows to compareevents registered in the different lineends on a common time base.

    Browser-based commissioning tool

The 7SD52 provides a commissioning andtest program which runs on a standardInternet browser (no special software isrequired at the PC). This program showsthe protection topology and comprehen-sive measurements from local and remoteline ends. Local and remote measurementsare shown as phasors and the breakerpositions of each line end are depicted.

    Substation control / systeminterface

The 7SD52 has a substation control inter-face according to the IEC 60870-5-103standard. This interface permits the electri-cal or optical connection of the 7SD52 to asubstation control system i.e., the SICAMsystem with the IEC-protocol.

    Service / modem interface

By means of the RS232/RS485 or opticalinterface, it is possible to efficiently operatea number of protection units centrally viaDIGSI 4 or a standard browser. Remote

operation is possible on connection of amodem. This offers the advantage of rapidfault clarification, especially in the case ofunmanned power plants.

With the optical version, centralized oper-ation can be implemented by means of astar coupler.

Flexible communication modules forsubstation control and service interface

The 7SD52 relay employs flexible interfacemodules.

    A 820 nm fiber-optic module, which

enables connection to multi-mode FOcable with ST connectors is available forthe system and modem communications.

The RS485 or RS232 electrical interfacesare also available.

The protection interfaces have thefollowing options:

820 nm fiber-optical interface with clockrecovery / ST connectors for direct con-nection with multi-mode FO cable up to1.5 km or the connection to a communi-cation converter.

820 nm fiber-optical interface / STconnectors for direct connection up to3.5 km with multi-mode FO cable.

1300 nm fiber-optical interface / STconnectors for direct connection up to10 km with mono-mode FO cable.

1300 nm fiber-optical interface / FCconnectors for direct connection up to35 km with mono-mode FO cable.

The connection to a multiplexed com-munication network is accomplished byan auxiliary communication converter.

This is fitted with the 820 nm interfaceand ST connectors on the relay side.Either an electrical X21 (RS422) interfaceor G703.1 interface can be selected onthe communication network side.
