Josephine Bakhita (1868-1947) understood firsthand the horrors of slavery and remains a powerful intercessor for present-day victims. While slavery has been illegal in most places for more than a hundred years, it still exists today, though generally under the radar. Humans around the world continue to be treated as objects to be bought and sold for a price. It is a great crime against humanity, something that St. Josephine Bakhita experienced firsthand. Bakhita was taken by slave traders when she was around seven years old and remained enslaved for many years until she was bought by an Italian. She was eventually set free and became a Canossian Sister in Italy. Despite the horrible treatment she endured, Bakhita had a firm faith in God and forgave her captors, saying, “If I were to meet those who kidnapped me, and even those who tortured me, I would kneel and kiss their hands. For, if these things had not happened, I would not have been a Christian and a religious today.” St. Josephine Bakhita, you were sold into slavery as a child and endured untold hardship and suffering. Once liberated from your physical enslavement, you found true redemption in your encounter with Christ and his Church. St. Bakhita, assist all those who are trapped in a state of slavery; Intercede with God on their behalf so that they will be released from their chains of captivity. Those whom man enslaves, let God set free. Provide comfort to survivors of slavery and let them look to you as an example of hope and faith. Help all survivors find healing from their wounds. We ask for your prayers and intercessions for those enslaved among us. Amen. It's hard being a child sometimes!

Modern children are raised to be kind to others and mostly have very kind parents who explain and reason and make allowances. Unfortunately when children get together in any kind of group environment they are not particularly kind or nice to each other so many children are completely floored and don't know what to do. A huge part of socialisation is learning to let others be how they are, to stick up for ourselves and maintain good personal boundaries when needed and to accept that we are

not as important to everyone else as we are to ourselves. In short we have attitudes to develop, skills to learn, and knowledge to attain. Becoming a well socialised child is not easy in our busy, screen obsessed and adult managed world but it is the way forward to a happier and more confident life. Every parent would like their child to live in

a world where they were treated kindly, affectionately and sensitively by everyone around them but unfortunately in real life this is unlikely to happen. Not because children are mean, most of them aren't, but they are all still learning and growing themselves and don't yet have all the appropriate attitudes, skills and knowledge either. This workshop will help you provide the support your child needs to manage the choppy world of friendships and relationships - what to say, what not to say and how to grow their thinking, skills and confidence around others

Recent participant feedback for this workshop:

“This will totally change the way I parent – I wish I had been to the workshop sooner”

“I absolutely loved the problem solving choice chart!”

“Excellent insights into the children’s psyche helping you and them to cope with modern world challenges!”

“Gill is very engaging and provides lots of helpful tips which I can’t wait to put into practice”

“Extremely helpful and practical tips to help my child with their playground dramas.”

Children’s Mental Health Week This week is Children’s Mental Health Week and it seems appropriate to share with you that we have been awarded the ‘The Carnegie Centre of Excellence for Mental Health in Schools – Silver Award’. This award recognises our whole school approach to foster and develop the children’s good mental health. See for more information www.mindsahead.org.uk/centre-for-excellence/.

We've demonstrated the impact of our ongoing strategies to grow good mental health. The award recognises that at St Mary’s we develop the full person and aim for all through good health (mind, body and spirit). We know that our children are happy because we see very, very few behavioural issues and we see happy children. It’s great to have what we do recognised in this way.

St Mary’s has been recognised for our whole school joined up approach. We have robust strategies in place to help the well-being of children and these are embedded in the day to day life of the school and the children.

We have been recognised as empowering children in leadership roles, they have the opportunity to influence practise, systems and the school’s way of doing things. Our children are actively encouraged to help make decisions. The buddy system we have in place, which helps to encourage a family ethos through pairing older children with younger children, was also seen as a positive in helping children feel less isolated by encouraging them to be proactive in seeing where others may need support.

We were also recognised for the support given to children who may be struggling both in class and at home by things which are often outside of their control. By giving children/parents the support and the listening ear they deserve, this in return creates a positive effect not only for the child but for all those around them.

We are also proud of the fact that our teacher retention is high and this has also been recognised. By encouraging positive well-being for all staff in our school, this attracts a high calibre of staff but also creates a better environment where teachers feel able to give the very best of themselves to their class and to the profession they spent many years to achieve.

I would like to say a big Thank You to all those involved in helping us, as a school, to achieve this most relevant and important award. Life can often throw obstacles in our way and whilst some things we can never prepare for; at St Mary’s we will do all we possibly can to ensure we have the best strategies and plans in place to help and support all who attend St Mary’s school; be it our children, our staff or you as their parents/carers.
