Nunez’s story is part of the hidden toll of migration to the U.S. through Mexico: In the past four years alone, almost 4,000 migrants have died or gone missing along that route, The Associated Press has found in an exclusive tally. That’s 1,573 more than the previously known number, calculated by the United Nations. And even the AP’s number is likely low — bodies may be lost in the desert, and families may not report missing loved ones who were migrat-ing illegally.

These Latin American migrants are among about 56,800 worldwide who died or disappeared over the same period, the AP found. While migrants every-where face risks, the Mexico route holds the added danger of drug trafficking and gang violence. More than 37,000 people have gone missing throughout Mexico because of this violence.

George H.W. Bush, who in one term as pres-ident reasserted the U.S. as the world’s lone superpower, rallying an international coalition against Iraq’s Saddam Hussein in the first Gulf War and presiding over the fall of the Berlin Wall and subsequent collapse of the Soviet Union, died on Friday. He was 94.

The announcement of his passing was made in a statement by his son, former President George W. Bush.

“Jeb, Neil, Marvin, Doro and I are saddened to announce that after 94 remarkable years, our dear Dad has died,” his son said in a statement released Friday night.

“George H.W. Bush was a man of the high-est character and the best dad a son or daughter could ask for. The entire Bush family is deeply grateful for 41’s life and love, for the compassion of those who have cared and prayed for Dad, and for the con-dolences of our friends and fellow citizens,” the statement read.

to a ceasefire in their bitter trade war on Saturday after high-stakes talks in Argentina between U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, including no escalated tariffs on Jan. 1.

TORONTO (November 26, 2018) – The Canadian Olympic Committee (COC) has announced two-time Olympian Douglas Vandor as Team Canada’s Chef de Mission for the Lima 2019 Pan American Games.

A native of Dewittville, Que-bec, Vandor competed for Team Canada in rowing in the men’s lightweight dou-ble sculls at Beijing 2008 and London 2012. He had previously been an alter-nate for the lightweight four at Athens 2004.Vandor represented Cana-da internationally for more than a decade, winning eight world cup medals and three world championship medals.

As a retired Olympian, Van-dor actively supported the next generation of Cana-dian athletes behind the

scenes through his profes-sional and volunteer expe-rience.He served Team Canada at two major Games, act-ing as the media attaché for rowing and boxing at the TORONTO 2015 Pan American Games and as an athlete services officer at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games. He has also worked in communications for Rowing Canada Aviron and the Royal Bank of Can-ada through the RBC Olym-pian program.

Vandor has been an active volunteer in his commu-nities. He founded ‘Fol-low Your Dream Run’, a not-for-profit organization designed to raise money for the physical educa-tion programs of the local schools in his hometown in Quebec. He also mentored national-calibre athletes

through the RBC Olympians Mentorship Matching Pro-gram in Vancouver, where he currently resides.

The Lima 2019 Pan Ameri-can Games represent a vi-tal step in the qualification process for Tokyo 2020 in a number of disciplines including surfing, a new addition to the Olympic programme. The Games are also the biggest stage for athletes competing in non-Olympic sports includ-ing bowling, racquetball, roller sports, squash, tae-kwondo (poomsae), water-ski and wakeboard.Lima 2019, which will run from July 26 to August 11, will bring together approxi-mately 6,700 athletes from 41 nations of the Americas and feature 62 disciplines in 39 sports. It will be the largest sporting event ever held in Peru.
