• The remembrance poppy was inspired by the World War I poem "In Flanders Fields". Its opening lines refer to the many poppies that were the first flowers to grow in the earth of soldiers' graves in Flanders, a region of Belgium.

• The poppy has been a symbol of remembrance for almost a century to honour Britain's war dead.

• The Royal British Legion's poppy appeal has gone on to raise hundreds of millions of pounds for charity.

• In the UK today a study found that 50,000 veterans are suffering from mental health conditions and 6000 have no permanent address.
