It feels like Advent just ended and here I amtalking about Lent! Hopefully that means springis not far off.

But Lent, like Advent, is a special time that isset aside so that we might focus on what liesahead of us. Lent leads us to the roller coasterride of facing death (Jesus’ and our own), but itdoesn’t leave us there. Because the end point ofLent is resurrection, new life and freshbeginnings.

That is quite a roller coaster ride; but it is alsoan invitation. Lent is a call to change ourselves.By walking the journey ofLent we connectourselves to Christ – and open ourselves toseeing a new way of being and living.

Change and transformation can be hard. Weinstinctively know that. But somewhere deepinside I believe we also know that it is a doorwayto something better – some place closer to God.

There are many ways to experience theseaspects ofLent. Some give up something. Somelook inward – taking up an interior spiritualdiscipline. Some look outward – seeking placesto help another.

Whatever we do, these 40 days ofLent are anopportunity for each of us to grow deeper andfurther in faith.

This Lent I will be offering another of our“Bible Story Jam” to help us explore, even more, what Lent is calling us towards. These will beheld after coffee hour on Sundays during Lent.Check the bulletin and website for details.

I also invite you to look over the excerpts ofour recent Annual Report in this issue. 2014 wasa good year for Christ Church, and speaking oflooking ahead, I believe God has just as much instore for 2015.

So, I hope we can walk this Lenten journeytogether. A gift is always better when it is shared, isn’t it? This gift, ifwe open it, takes us deeperand further. May God’s blessings of promises ofnew life and resurrection be clear to us all as weenter these days ofLent.

In His Name,

Rev. Mark +

Candlemas? Since the Middle Ages, February2nd has been known as Candlemas, an old feastday when candles were blessed and sent homewith parishioners so the Divine Light coulddirect their earthly steps.

Consider this Divine Light directing our lives, individually, and on a daily basis, to boot! As oneof the anthems in the Singers’ repertoire says:“Jesus is the light of the world, He is the light ofthe world. He is the light of theworld.Hallelujah! ! ” But the light doesn’t stopwith Jesus. In Matthew 5:14-16 Christ says:“You are the light of the world. A city on a hillcannot be hidden. Neither do people light a lampand put it under a bowl.Instead they put it on itsstand, and it gives light to everyone in the house. In the same way, let your light shine beforeothers that they may see your good deeds andglorify your Father in heaven.”

And so the challenge for us is to keep ourlights shining, or as the title of a spiritual says:“Keep Your Lamps Trimmed and Burnin’ .”

A couple of years ago I was given a HappyLight™ that provides my studio with “daylight”far more efficient than candles, not to mentionthe safety factor. All I need to do is flip theswitch, et voila – more than enough light tocounteract the gloom that filters in through theskylight. While this light is private for me, byhaving it on, I’m encouraged to pass it on – aslong as I Pay Attention to the nudging of theHoly Spirit which I find in the symbolism ofCandlemas.

In the preface of Illuminated PrayersMarianne Williamson defines prayer as a“spiritual lifeline,” and the readings begin:

“Dear God,

As I wake up this morning, may Your spiritcome upon me.

May my mind receiver Your emanations, mysoul receive Your blessing, and my heart receiveYour Love.May all those I meet or even think ofon this day feel better for it.

May I contribute peace.

May I serve Your purposes with all I say anddo, today and always.

Please show me how.

Amen.”

Dear God,

Please show us how to keep our lampstrimmed and burning, showing that we areindeed your light in this world.

Amen

What a wonderful way to start the new year! The Youth Group met on Friday evening,January 16th in preparation for the Breakfast Runto NYC on Saturday, January 17th. Weaccomplished so much in such a short amount oftime. The group helped to sort through lots ofclothing and label them all, make up toiletrybags, individually wrap pre-made (storebought) breakfast sandwiches, andorganize everything to help the needy inNYC. The group that attended the runarrived at church by 6:00 am thefollowing morning, ready and excited todo God's work. Arrival into the cityproved to be a bit of a challenge giventhe boat show preparations at the Javit'sCenter. (We set up near 33rd and 11 th).

I must say, this was by far one of the bestruns! The group eagerly served about 65 men aswell as some women. Smiles and friendlygestures were passed around, along with hotcoffee, hot chocolate, and the food we preparedfor them. Some of the men that we served eventhanked us by serenading us with a few songs. Inthat moment, it didn't matter ifwe were rich, poor, white, black, purple, had a home, or didn't.We were one group that together shared a bittercold morning, enjoying each others company. When it was time to pack up and head home, Itruly believe that each and every one of us left apiece of our heart with those we were able tohelp.

On behalf of the youth group, thank you allfor always stepping up and making these runspossible, whether it be by donating food, blankets, clothing, and/or toiletry items. Whenwe look beyond the external act of the youthgiving these gifts, I believe we are helping themto discover their identities while giving themopportunities to grow mentally and spiritually.

As always, thank you for your continuoussupport.

Christ Church on Quaker Hill 2014 Annual Report“When he had finished speaking, he said to Simon, “Now go out where it is deeper, and let down yournets to catch some fish” ~ Luke 5:4 NLT

Dear members and friends:

I will remember 2014 as a year in which wedid big things and some smaller ones; some newthings and some which we have always done; aswell as some things that we began and some thatwe finished. Through all of it, it was not difficultto feel blessed and led by God. And I felt agrowing depth to our sense of community andour faith.

But the thing which I think was probably themost important was the completion of ourStrategic Planning process. Many of you tookpart in this church wide effort, and for that I amgrateful. This was important to me as the pastorto gauge where you thought we were and whereyou thought we were called to go. Having acommon sense of purpose is so important for achurch.

The passage from Luke, quoted above, hasalways spoken to me about life and church. Ibelieve it is in those deeper places that thinngsbecome more meaningful, and therefore moresacred. I believe we went “deeper” this past year, but I also feel Jesus saying to us what he said toPeter, “Now go out where it is deeper. . .”

I think our new Strategic Plan points us in thesame direction. But not only that, it gives ussome tangible benchmarks to measure how, andalso how well, we are doing that.

This past year we continued to develop invital areas of our common life. An unexpectedbut wonderful surprise was a substantial giftfrom the Peale Foundation. This gift will allowus to create a workable (and very needed) planfor handling some of the maintenance issuesfacing our historic campus. It will also challengeeach of us to be a part of this effort. Many folksare working already to prioritize projects andcreate this plan. Some of these projects havealready been tackled, while others are beingplanned.

We celebrated the 50th Anniversary of ourbeloved “Christmas Bazaar” with a wonderfulday, full of familiar friends, new faces, and, ofcourse, much loving effort from so many of you.

We said “thank you” and “goodbye” to two ofour staffmembers, and welcomed two new ones.

Of course, each year we face challenges, butwe face them with faith and trust, and alwaysfind a way to persevere.

In so many areas we are growing in spiritedand exciting ways.

This coming year, probably around summertime, I will take the sabbatical which I postponedfrom last year. I look forward to working onsome projects I don’t normally have the time todelve into, all so that I can return ready andenergized to “go deeper” with all of you.

Yes, 2014 was a busy year, but it was also avery good one. And I feel God is preparing us fora new year which will be even better and morefulfilling, for us individually and as a churchcommunity.

There is much to be thankful for. I am gratefulfor the strong lay leadership which is such animportant part of our church, led by KevinKitowski and Betsy Brockway. I am alsoappreciative of the talented and loving staff that Iam surrounded by. And of course I give thanksfor each of you, and for the many different waysyou show your love for God’s church and Hiswork in the world.

There is more depth to be explored anddiscovered in this coming year. I feel God callingus to those places. I also feel his blessing as,together, we look excitedly into the future Godhas prepared for us.

2014 has been a good year for Christ Churchon Quaker Hill. Through the hard work anddedication of so many of our volunteers, westrengthened our programs and extended ouroutreach into the communities in which weserve. Two wonderful and very important newerministries, our youth program and our Stephenministry, continued to flourish very nicely thisyear. We saw another year of substantialproceeds from our annual Christmas bazaar. Ourfall stewardship drive led to a steady level ofpledges for 2015. We ended the year with a verymodest deficit and we were able to manageincreases in our spending through incrementaldonations, limiting withdrawals from ourinvestment accounts.

We established (effort is ongoing) ourstrategic planning effort which was aimed atdetermining where Christ Church on Quaker Hillis and where it is going. The product of thiseffort includes a revised mission statement, revised vision statement and documentation ofthe direction and priorities of our variousprograms as reported in the following Teamnarratives. Thanks to Anna Lindstrom and BetsyBrockway for organizing this.

I thank everyone on the Board ofElders fortheir work this past year. We are blessed to havesuch a strong group of individuals sharing their

Thank youto: Mark Allan, Ingrid Buell, Linda Chase, JimLebenthal, Maggie Everett, Jon Olsen, BetsyBrockway, Amy Mehlrose, Anna Lindstrom,Jason Smith, Patsy Cowie, Ron Wozniak, JeffGiordano, Stew Jobson and Brian Berlandi. Despite a sluggish economy in 2014 ChristChurch continues to grow and prosper thanks tothe generous spirit of our congregation. Thanksto each and every one of you for sharing yourtime and gifts to help make 2014 anothersuccessful year. As you read through the reportswhich follow I believe you will find that we arewell positioned to continue our mission to“provide a nurturing environment in which allpersons can grow in personal faith, discover theirgifts and use them to become living examples ofGod’s vision through Jesus Christ” well into thefuture.

2014 was a very busy year for CCoQH withrespect to buildings and grounds. As we have allcome to appreciate more than ever, the properand timely upkeep of our wonderful churchcampus is a continuous and laborious processwhich requires the financial resources and/orcommitment of time from everyone. That beingsaid, we had a very productive and successful2014!

We continued to improve our facilities thisyear with some significant projects. The Manseshutters painted by various volunteer memberswere reinstalled. Our septic system behind theThomas Center was repaired and the drivewayblacktop was replaced for a total of $4,245. AnEnergy Efficiency Program to replace light bulbsand fixtures in the Thomas Center and theChurch was completed. (This project cost$19,516 with NYSEG paying $13,516.)

Thanks to the generosity of the PealeFoundation, the Thomas Center has undergone amajor facelift over the summer for a cost of$36,760 with new painting, carpeting, cork tiles, refinishing ofwooden floors and installation ofreplacement blinds.

Perhaps the most significant feat of 2014, theElders hired Walter Hauser, Architects, PLLC fora cost of $4,875 to evaluate our three buildingsand campus, and he presented us the draft ofChrist Church on Quaker Hill’s FacilitiesAssessment Plan to the Church Council inOctober. This comprehensive buildings andgrounds “audit” was developed over the courseofmany summer weeks, with a comprehensiveexamination of all aspects of our facilities wasundertaken, which resulted in a very professionalreport being delivered to the Council. This reportwill help us immensely to prioritize the workneeded to keep our facilities updated and intact, and to focus on long-term and short-termstrategic initiatives.

It has been a long time (if ever) since such areport was compiled, and this proved to be amost timely endeavor. The Council will now

study this report as it puts into effect our strategicinitiatives for the facilities.

We hope you all have noticed that effortswere made by many “angels” throughout the yearto continue the beautification of the churchbuilding. Re-doing floors, hanging portraits, changing furniture, etc. are just a few of the tasksthat were completed by our members over thepast two years.

The goal, of course, if not only to make thechurch a more pleasant place for our usage, butalso for the use of those who wish to use ourchurch for their personal events. Increasing therental of our facilities for the purpose ofgenerating revenue remains a high priority forthe Council. Continued improvement of theaesthetics of the church, Memorial Hall, LanklerHall and the atrium are always being discussedand worked on with those same goals in mind.Like anything, it takes time and money, but weare getting there!

The Remembrance Garden was continued tobe maintained and improved. In the future thegarden will become part of the church’soperating budget under the guidance of theBuilding and Grounds team with the churchadministering purchase of plaques and dedicationceremonies. As ofDecember, 2014 theRemembrance Garden Dedicated Fund had abalance of $13,703.

So many additional “little” improvementswere made over the course of the year, thoughthey are too numerous to recite here. Suffice it tosay that nothing ever happens without thegenerous giving of time by so many of you whocare so much about our campus. Please don’tstop! We need you all.

In closing, we offer you all a huge THANKYOU for doing all you do to help keep ourcampus beautiful and vibrant.

This year theOutreach team also purchased 7 new large heavyduty plastic double sided sign frames. 50 newgraphic designed signs were also purchased forseveral of our own CCOQH yearly eventsincluding Easter Sunrise Service, TenebraeService, The Blessing of the Animals, and theWomen’s Retreat. We are very excited to displaythese new and “eye catching” works of art.

There were several noteworthy projects theteam participated in this year enabling us tofulfill CCOQH’s mission to be the “Hands andFeet ofGod”. We had a very successful MidnightRun helping, feeding and clothing many of thoseout in the cold and in need. Together with theCCOQH’s Youth Group we provided hot mealsfor a large amount of the homeless during ourBreakfast Run. A group of our volunteerstraveled to Schoharie County, NY for severaldays giving their time, talents and energy to helprebuild an area still heavily affected. Theseevents not only helped many people but alsoprovided meaningful and enriching fellowshipopportunities for many of our CCOQH family.

The Outreach Team is always looking for newmembers, new ideas, new projects, and neworganizations to assist. We ask you all to take amoment and consider how you can be a part ofthis truly wonderful and fulfilling group. Helpingus help others.

2014 brought some unique changes to ourMusic Program. Looking back mostly inchronological order:

We are in the process of developing a strongrelationship with the Sherman ChamberEnsemble. The group presented a concert inchurch as has become their custom on the firstSaturday in January. The professionalperformance is well received.

At the end of January, following through withthe Strategic Planning, Betsy Brockway met withMark Allan, Patsy Cowie, then chair of theWorship Team, Mary Jane Phelan, then Musicdirector, and Barbara Vogel, organist/pianist toreview points specific to the Music Program - “tomaintain and leverage the music program” - assuggested by the Worship Team. The need toupgrade the piano in Lankler Hall was addressedas the Kimball Baby Grand, graciously donatedto the church in 1973 by the Wangeman Familyhad outlived its life expectancy, no longer able tohold a tuning. Barbara Vogel took on theresponsibility of researching digital pianos. Witha bit of “private” fundraising, donations in theamount of $5000 covered the purchase of a newYamaha™ NU1 , delivery, and removal of theKimball in July.

The 4th Evening of Jazz was held onSaturday, March 1 st with the Vokes-Walker Duo– Sara Vokes, vocals and Jim Walker, percussion- accompanied by JeffMcGill, piano and LouPappas, bass. Once again, this was a successfulfundraising event ($800), enjoyed by 45+ mostappreciative attendees. This ushered us into theFat Sunday service, with guest musicians AliRyerson, flute, Ivan Hunter, trumpet, and GeorgeSkidd, bass.

Throughout the first half of the year theSingers, DQs, and Hand Bell Ringers, along withthe Trinitones, the a cappella group from TrinityPawling School, participated in the Sundayworship services, all making a joyful noise!

A major change came about in April whenMary Jane Phelan resigned as Music Director, effective at the end of June. An ad hoc committee

– Mark Allan, Kevin Kitowski, and BarbaraVogel – came together to review the situation, and begin the search for someone who would notonly maintain, but keep the Music Programgrowing. Following conversations, interviews, and a few more conversations, Toni LaPietraaccepted the position as our Music Director.

As it usually happens, July and August werefairly quiet months for the regular MusicProgram participants. However, the congregationwas blessed with a piano/organ duet from BarbFornshell & Barb Vogel, a vocal solo from JohnWyles, piano solos by Tom Governale, and OscarRodriguez who also presented a concert in AikinHall just before returning to Italy to continue hisstudies, and a hymn sing by one and all.

Then came the Fall, and the beginning of allthings scheduled -

Thursday: Bell rehearsal 5:30-6:30PM

Singers rehearsal 7-9PM

Saturday: DQ rehearsal 9:30-11 :00AM at TheMusic Box Studios on the 1 st & 3rd weeks.

Sunday: Bell rehearsal 11 :30AM – 1 :00PM

These regular rehearsals continue throughoutthe school year. In addition, preparations for theannual Christmas Concert start on the firstTuesday ofOctober, and run through to theconcert itself, which is always scheduled for thesecond Sunday in December. This year theChristmas Concert raised $1 ,241 .

Considering the size of our congregation, wehave a much larger than average percentage offolks worshipping through music. But there isalways room for another Singer, orinstrumentalist. If you think you might like tojoin the music making as a newbie or returnee, please feel free!

All in all, the Music program at CCoQH isvery active, blessing participants andcongregation alike.

Respectfully submitted,

Barbara Vogel, organist/pianist

Good News so Keep reading!

For all our new members (and others whohaven’t been paying attention) I offer a quickreminder that Stewardship includes the giving ofone’s time, talent and treasure. While ourcongregation offers it’s time and talents in justabout every segment of our church, (worship andfellowship and outreach and congregational lifeand buildings and grounds and music and on andon…) this annual report concentrates on thetreasure part.

Our Stewardship Committee’s primaryresponsibility is to educate and encourage ourcongregation in the powerful and poignantexperience of financially supporting our church’smission. Stewardship at Christ Church isn’t justabout paying the utility bills, it’s about growing awonderful church and sharing Jesus’ lifechanging message with others.

There are two very encouraging points for2014 (and some for 2015 but that comes later.)First, our pledges for 2014 were the highest inChrist Church’s history (or at least in my 16years here! ) with our budget of $192,631 .00 forpledged offerings. Here’s the better part, ouractual income from pledges was $191 ,451 .00. In

recent years we have typically come up short onactual pledge income so the fact that we prettymuch nailed it in 2014 is fantastic!

More details on 2014 can be found by readingthrough the Treasurer’s Report. While our Non-Pledged and Other Offerings did come in underbudget, we are not to fear. Your friendlyneighborhood Church Council just has some newitems to focus on, and adjustments to thosebudgets for 2015 have been addressedappropriately.

The theme for our fall Stewardship Programwas “Take Hold of the life that really is life.” Wethank Gail Orser and Stan and Linda Chase forsharing their feelings and experiences and whythey love our church and look forward tosupporting it and its mission. As usual, ourCongregational Life team headed up a deliciouspot-luck luncheon complete with “God’sWaffles! ”

Here’s the best part, we are very pleased toreport that this year’s pledging (for 2015) wasour highest yet! As of typing this, we have 76pledges totaling $197,635.00!

Thanks to Jason Smith and Jim Lebenthal forserving on the Stewardship Committee and toKevin Kitowski, Betsy Brockway, Ingrid Buelland Mark Allan of the Executive Committee, andthanks to all of you supportive and generousmembers of our church who have pledged, contributed and responded to our mission.

I feel truly blessed to be a member of thiswonderful church and I am encouraged andexcited by the energy and continued growth weare experiencing. I look forward to gettingdeeper with you all in 2015!

Peace be with you,

Jon Olsen, Chair

Immediately following church service

1. Call meeting to order Kevin

Good morning. I thank you all for staying andI would like to welcome you to this year’sannual meeting. The annual reports are beingdistributed and we will try to move this alongas effectively and efficiently as possible.

The purpose of today’s meeting is:

To share the written reports from each of ourcouncil committees,

to reflect briefly on some of the highlightsfrom the past year,

to provide an update on our financial situationand budget for 2014 and to vote on newleaders.

So, while there is a lot of good informationincluded in the report, we don’t intend to gothrough all the details in this meeting. Afterthe meeting as you have more of a chance toread through the reports, if you have anyquestions please feel free to ask me or anothermember of the council.

To start us off, I’ ll ask Rev. Allan open ourmeeting with a prayer.

2. Opening Prayer Mark

3. Vote to approve last year’s minutes Kevin

Thank you Mark.

Our next order of business is to approve theminutes from last year’s annual meeting. Youwill find them towards the back of the report. After a quick scan does anyone have anychanges or updates they would like to add tolast year’s minutes?

If not, can I hear a motion from the floor toapprove last year’s minutes? Second. All infavor? All opposed? So moved. Thank youvery much.

4. 2013 Brief Summary/Overview Kevin

While we are not planning to go through eachsection of the annual report, I do encourageeach of you to read it. 201 3 was a good yearfor Christ Church on Quaker Hill.

We continue to move forward in our missionof “providing a nurturing environment inwhich all persons can grow in personal faith, discover their gifts and use them to becomeliving examples ofGod’s vision through JesusChrist”.

Speaking of our mission, one of our majorinitiatives in the 2013 year was our“Community Conversation” which amongmany other great things we will continue tobuild and strengthen the key programs in thelife of our church:

Our Worship Services in 2013 combined thetraditions that have been observed at ChristChurch over the years with some newerelements such as the Fat Sunday Jazz Serviceand the highly popular annual blessing of theanimals.

Our Congregational Life team had anotherbusy year sponsoring everything frompotlucks, picnics, the bazaar, coffee hour andthe prayer chain, the card ministry and more. Also, our first group in Stephen Ministrycompleted their training last year and I thinkthat is going to prove to be a tremendousthing.

Our Outreach programs continue to grow andinclude events like Midnight Runs,Rebuilding Together in Dutchess County, ourRadio Ministry, the NOLA trip and our workto help support the Pawling Resource Center.

Our Music program is going strong as ever. The Singers were excellent as always not onlyduring Sunday worship but during our specialevents including Fat Sunday Jazz and thespring and Christmas Concerts. Our handbell

choir continues to thrive and add newmembers. And, our kids’ choir and bellscontinue to do well.

Our Education programs continue to growand our Nursery School enrollment continuesto max out each year. Our youth group, led byStephanie Giordano, continues to be anexciting and productive program.

Our Buildings & Grounds team keeps thefacilities in good shape and we undertook twomajor renovations this year, the painting ofthe interior of the church and the painting ofthe manse. Special thanks to all the volunteerswho helped with those projects, especiallyGail Orser, who did a fantastic job offundraising for the manse painting and KatieBerlandi, who was integral to both. Whilst notspecifically a B&G effort, the RemembranceGarden project, led by Roger and Rosemary, with help from many others, was completed, was dedicated in June and really looksbeautiful.

Our Stewardship campaign this year yieldedgood results. Ingrid will go through thenumbers shortly, but pledges for 2013increased by about 5% over 2012, putting usin a very good position with the budget as weenter this New Year.

So, our church has been very active this pastyear. Building on the best of our pasttraditions and adding new elements to help usreach further into the communities we serve.

And there is much more about all the greatthings we are doing in the annual report. So, Iencourage you to read it. It’s a great way tolearn more about all that is going on and tolook for new ways you can become involvedin the life of our church.

Thank you to the Elders:

We are very fortunate in this church to have agreat group of leaders serving on the EldersCouncil. I would like to take a minute tothank the Elders team for their generousservice. They and their committees havereally done a great job this year ensuring we

Our next order of business is to elect newElders and our 2014 nominating committee.Jim Lebenthal and Maggie Everett led thisyear’s nominating committee which includedLinda Chase, Karen Matthews, and BrianBerlandi.

Can I hear a motion from the floor to approveLinda and Stew, our new Elders? So moved.Second. All in favor, all opposed? So moved.Thank you and Amy, Anna, Gail, Brian, Betsyand Jason welcome…we look forward tohaving you join the Council.

2014 Council Chair

One more note on the Council ofElders. Theoriginal plan for 2014 was that I would stepdown from the council, having served sixyears, and that Gail Orser would take over aschair of the council. Because Gail has decidedto step down, I will remain on the council forone more year, serving as co-chair with BetsyBrockway, and then Betsy will take over ascouncil chair in 2015.
