Cell Reference and FormulaeCell Referencing
Identifies the location a cell or a groupof cells in the spreadsheet.
Also referred to as a cell address.
Consists of the column letter and row
number that intersect at the cell's
location

Cell Reference and FormulaeCell Reference Types
A cell can be referenced in threeways:
1) Relative
2) Aboslute
3) Mixed
Using the correct type of cell reference ensures that
formulae work as expected when you copy them to
another location in the worksheet.

Cell Reference and FormulaeCell Reference Types
Reference Type Formula What Happens After Copying the
Formula
Relative =A1 Both the column letter A and the row
number 1 can change.
Absolute =$A$1 The column letter A and the row
number 1 do not change.
Mixed =$A1 The column letter A does not change.
The row number 1 can change.
Mixed =A$1 The column letter A can change. The
row number 1 does not change.

Cell Reference and FormulaeFormulae
Formulas in spreadsheet programs such as
Excel are used to Perform Calculations.
Formulas can range from basic mathematical
operations to complex engineering and
statistical calculations.
Begin with an equal ( =) sign and, for the
most part, they are entered into to the
worksheet cell(s) where we want theresults or answer to appear.

Cell Reference and FormulaeDifference in Formulae and Functions
Formulas
Formulas are instructions forperforming calculations.
Functions
Functions are preset formulasthat are included in the Excel
application. Many times a
function will simplify the
formulas that you would
otherwise enter manually.
Functions perform calculations
by using specific values, called
the arguments.
The best way to construct a
formula is to use cell references
instead of typing numbers in the
formula. Excel automaticallyupdates the results when you
change values in the referenced
cells.

Formulas
Example:
Manually enter a formula type:
=E4+E5+E6+E7+E8+E9+E10+E11+
E12+E13+E14+E15.
Functions
Example:
SUMfunction to add the values
would be:
=SUM(E4:E15)

Cell Reference and FormulaeAutoSum Function
The AutoSUM button, located on the
Standard Toolbar, is a shortcut provided
for using the SUM function.
Clicking on the AutoSUM button, theSUM function is entered into the active
cell.
