The busy airspace of North Carolina has witnessed the com-bined efforts of the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF), the

Canadian Army, the United States Army, and the United States Air Force (USAF) during the Joint Operational Access Exercise (JOAX) 13-02 at Fort Bragg during February 2013.

“We have a long history of working jointly with other na-tions,” said 8 Wing Commander, Colonel Sean Friday. “The JOAX is valuable to us as we get to work with our allies under realistic training scenarios, exchange best practices, and learn from each other.”

Recently, the Aircraft Arresting Sys-tem (AAS) Section of 86 Airfi eld Sys-

tems and Utilities Flight (86 ASU) was

awarded the Patton-Cunnington Trophy for their role in the Royal Canadian Air Force (RCAF) AAS Modernization Proj-ect.

This prestigious trophy is awarded an-nually by 1 Canadian Air Division and recognizes a signifi cant engineering

project completed by a unit, with focus being placed on benefi t to the Canadian Forces (CF), project complexity, plan-ning and design, project execution and logistical diffi culty.

The trophy memorializes the Second World War actions of two construc-

tion engineer offi cers from 1 Canadian Pioneer Battalion. On Sept. 21, 1940, af-ter a daylight bombing raid against an aircraft production plant in England, Lieutenant J.M.S. Patton and Captain

Trying to bring Trenton military artefacts home

The military has been a signifi cant part of the history of Trenton and the Quinte West re-

gion. No. 6 Company (Garrison Battery of Artil-lery) was formed at Trenton on July 20, 1866, and shortly afterwards folded into the 49th Regiment ‘Hastings Rifl es’ later that year. In 1920 the Rifl es amalgamated into the Hastings and Prince Ed-ward Regiment. In 1929 the Canadian government decided to build an airfi eld in Trenton, and with the opening of RCAF Station Trenton in 1931, the terms “Trenton” and “military” became synony-mous.

Trentonians served their country during the various confl icts. Artefacts relating to two broth-ers from Trenton recently came up for auction on the on-line service eBay. The Trenton Legion was made aware of this through the efforts of Dave Thomson from St. George, Ontario, who has spent many years trying to re-connect military artefacts with descendants of service personnel.

The artefacts are connected to Fred and George Burtt, brothers from Trenton who both served during the First World War. George signed up in 1914 with the 21st Battalion, Canadian Expedition-ary Force based at the Kingston Armouries, and served overseas earning the Military Cross for his actions. His brother Fred signed up in 1916 with the 155th (Quinte) Battalion, based in Barriefi eld, and later transferred to the 80th Battalion. Neither Battalion saw active service, and Fred eventually became part of the 75th Battalion, CEF. He was killed on 13 May 1917 and is buried in La Chau-diere Military Cemetery at Vimy.

Some of the artefacts in the collection include the British War Medal which belonged to Fred, and the identifi cation tags for both brothers. The collection is valued at $150.

While the Trenton Legion is interested in hav-ing the artefacts as part of their museum, they do not have the funds to purchase the items. It is hoped that members of the community will help with this endeavour.

Air to ground communication (AGA) is the means which ATC personnel communicate with aircraft in the Trenton airspace. Pte Li Zheng is currently one of six junior techs on rotation at IFRCC. All ATIS junior techs must complete QL4 training at an operational airfi eld.

Pte. Kyle Woodford (Otta-wa) adjusts the high volt-age on the SSR radar sys-tem as part of the weekly maintenance program. The SSR is used by air traf-fi c control (ATC), to detect and measure aircraft posi-tion (range and bearing), as well as requests aircraft identity and altitude. Pte Woodford is currently one of six junior techs on rota-tion at IFRCC. All ATIS ju-nior techs must complete QL4 training at an opera-tional air Wing.

Wing Commander’s Honours and Awards Ceremony 5 December 2012Cpl. Jim Stanley was awarded the Wing Commander’s Commendation. Cpl. Stan-ley’s exceptional efforts during the 2012 Na-tional SAREX resulted in a training exercise of unprecedented success. He competently ensured that all IT requirements were co-ordinated, voluntarily working extended hours to liaise with internal/external units, provide support to exercise coordinators and assist with the development of the SAREX web page. Without direction, he completed a multitude of additional tasks such as the recording of live exercise scenarios, repair-ing the roof of a privately owned hanger and other general duties which alleviated the workload of the coordinating commit-tee. His overwhelming dedication and com-mitment to the RCAF merit his recognition through this commendation.

Private Kyle Martin was awarded the Wing Commander’s Commendation. Pte. Kyle Martin is recognized for his ex-ceptional leadership, courage and timely action in providing fi rst aid to a fellow pas-senger who was in medical distress during an Air Canada fl ight. His knowledge, quick action and appropriate responses helped save the life of a diabetic patient in crisis and greatly assisted the in-fl ight crew. His positive control of the situation enabled the fl ight to continue to destination, pre-venting an unscheduled stop and inconven-ience for all passengers on board. Pte. Mar-tin’s leadership and personal courage have set an excellent example for all Canadian Forces personnel.

Canadians think they are eating well but research shows us otherwise. We conducted a survey and

found that Canadians struggle with making healthier food choices in the grocery store. Nutrition Month 2013 is dedicated to helping Canadians to put their best food forward when grocery shopping for healthy food from dietitians, the food and nutrition experts.

Healthy eating starts with having healthy foods in your home. With so many options, knowing what to choose can be a challenge. Rest assured, with a little preparation and knowledge, making the right choices can be as easy as one, two, three!

Have a plan!1. Create a weekly meal plan based on Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide. Make a list!2. Use your meal plan to make a gro-cery shopping list. Stick to it!3. Use your shopping list and stick to it at the grocery store.

How to make wise choices with Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide:

Choosing a variety of foods from all four food groups can help you achieve a balanced, healthy eating plan.

Shop the outer aisles at the grocery store.• Spend most of your time in the produce, bread, milk and meat sections of the store, where you will fi nd a variety of fresh foods recommended in Eating Well with Canada’s Food Guide. Enjoy plenty of vegetables and fruit.• Choose plenty of dark green and orange vegetables like broccoli, spinach, sweet potato and squash. Buy fresh or frozen vegetables whenever possible. Look for canned vegetables that are low in so-dium. Canned and frozen fruits and vegetables packed in water or natural juice are as nutritious as fresh.

Make at least half your grain products whole • grain. Make at least half of your grain servings whole grain each day. Enjoy a variety of grains such as barley, quinoa and rice which are natu-rally sodium free. Look for the words “whole grain whole wheat fl our”, whole rye, whole oat or oatmeal, whole corn, whole barley, etc., at the be-ginning of the ingredient list on packaged grain products and choose grain products that are low in fat, sugar and salt. Choose lower fat milk and alternatives.• Buy skim, 1% or 2% milk or a fortifi ed soy beverage. Plan to drink two cups every day for adequate vitamin D. Compare the Nutrition Facts table on packaged foods to help you select lower fat milk alternatives like low fat yogurt and cheeses. Select lean meat and alternatives.• Buy leaner meats and enjoy alternatives such as beans, len-tils and tofu often. Eat at least two servings of fi sh such as herring, char, mackerel, salmon, sardines and trout each week. Buy low sodium canned beans or try dried beans, peas and lentils. D.W. Cunnington removed an unexploded 226 kilogram (500-pound) bomb from the factory fl oor. For their ac-tions, Lt. Patton was awarded the George Cross “for an act of the most conspicuous courage in circumstances of extreme danger” and Capt. Cunnington was awarded the George Medal “for an act of great bravery.”

An AAS is an energy absorbing system that is used to rapidly stop NATO and other allied tail hook equipped fi ghter aircraft in the event of an in-fl ight emergency or an aborted takeoff. These systems are vital to our sovereignty and to safeguard the invest-ment Canada has made in our present and future air-craft and pilots.

The AAS Modernization Project will result in the replacement of all aircraft arresting systems through-out the Air Force, systems that are up to 50-years old and are either inadequate, obsolete or beyond their life cycle. The AAS Life Cycle Manager, project offi -cers from Ottawa and engineers from 1 Canadian Air Division have been working diligently to build new infrastructure and install new equipment. To date, 86 ASU has completed AAS upgrades at CFB Green-wood, CFB Comox, CFB Trenton, CFB Cold Lake, FOL Inuvik and Mirabel Int’l Airport.

The AAS section of 86 ASU is the “hands on” operat-ing structure of the AAS Modernization Project. It is the centre of excellence for AAS across the Canadian Forces. In addition to being the sole section that con-

ducts AAS Team Leader Qualifi cation courses, it com-pletes second and third line maintenance on all AAS nationwide and is the only section that maintains and deploys Mobile Aircraft Arresting Systems (MAAS). The trade responsible for upgrading, maintenance and training with regards to the AAS is the Refrig-eration and Mechanical Systems Technician Trade, a technically diverse trade capable of anything from HVAC maintenance to overhead door installation to AAS maintenance.

Over 50 members from 8 Wing/CFB Trenton partici-pated in this exercise. The Canadian Army deployed ap-proximately 400 soldiers from the 3rd Battalion, The Royal Canadian Regiment (3 RCR), together with other soldiers from 2 Canadian Mechanized Brigade Group to learn and exchange best practices with the US Army’s 82nd Air-borne Division, who hosted the exercise. This is the third year that 3 RCR has participated in this annual exercise.

“The JOAX is a major airborne exercise that is aimed at validating the readiness in airborne and air assault operation,” said Maj. Tyler Holland, 8 Wing Detachment Offi cer and an exchange offi cer with the RCAF from the US Marine Corps. “Our participation in this exercise includes tactical airdrop and air trans-port missions as part of a large multinational pack-age.”

436 (Transport) Squadron sent its CC-130J Hercules aircraft, while 429 (Transport) Squadron sent its CC-

177 Globemaster III in support of the exercise.Col. Friday noted that maintaining an important

balance between the training and employment of re-sources is a priority of his Wing.

“This exercise provided our personnel with a high readiness training opportunity, encompassing the concepts of modern combat and interoperability with our allies,” he noted.

“Flying around Fort Bragg is challenging because of the busy airspace considering the nearby commercial airport in Fayetteville and international airports that are considered to be of short fl ying distance from us. It was an excellent learning experience for me,” he stated.

Capt. Forbes mentioned that, in the beginning, it was a little bit hectic for planning as they were trying to get a

feel of the area, but since they have settled in, planning became easier and as well accomplishing the different fl ying missions.

“Sometimes we had two launches and each one has about 70 or more jumpers in it,” said Capt. Forbes. “When we took them into a drop zone, we did some tactical fl y-ing manoeuvres as part of our training and also to make it realistic for the guys who jump out of our Herc.”

The JOAX was an excellent opportunity for 8 Wing

members to be exposed to such a large operation with the US military.

Maintainers from 436 Squadron and 429 Squadron had friendly interactions with their counterparts from the USAF from various parts of the US. Fort Bragg had been very gracious in sharing their facility and had been very welcoming to the RCAF crew.

“Working here is a memorable experience,” said Capt. Forbes.

Rowing Club closer to their goalThe members of the Trenton Rowing and Paddling Club continue to work hard to

raise the $100,000 needed to build their new boathouse. The boathouse will be the base of operations for the new club and will be built in

Kiwanis Park on the east shore of the Trent River in downtown Trenton this spring. Their latest effort was a Curling Funspiel on Feb. 9 where the club raised close to $7,000 for their capital fund.

The Funspiel was organized by club secretary Robin Pilon, who has already started plans on another Funspiel for 2014.

“It was a great day with curling, lunch, prizes and a silent auction,” noted Pilon. “Many local businesses supported us by donating items for the silent auction and the Trenton Curling Club has given us tremendous support through the use of their facil-ity and shared their experience with Funspiels.”

There were 16 teams entered all together in the Funspiel with 64 participants, many of whom had never curled before. There was a great lunch for everyone donated by caterer Deb Baldasaro, who is very excited about the new club and wanted to support the Funspiel fundraiser.

At the end of the day, after lots of fun from throwing rocks and sweeping hard, the team that came out on top with the most points was the foursome from TrackQuest led by Duncan Armstrong.

The club is 80 per cent of the way to their fundraising goal and still has a ways to go. They will continue to appeal to the local business community and residents to donate if they can.

At the Funspiel, local businessman and owner of Quinte Patient Transfer Service, Stephen Andrews, surprised the organizers with a $1,000 donation to the capital cam-paign.

“I was happy to help out,” said Andrews. “Having an active rowing and paddling club is going to be great for our downtown. It will also be a new opportunity for many young people in our community looking to stay active and enjoy the outdoors. I am a member of the Trenton Kiwanis Club and this is going to be a real asset in Kiwanis Park and I know the whole club wants to get behind this project in a big way.”

Whether it’s a simple step stool, or one which soars to many feet above the

ground, ladders help you reach heights you never thought you could. There’s far more to safe ladder use than having a sturdy ladder and lots of physical agility. Many people are seriously injured by fall-ing from ladders, whether from close to the ground or higher up.

By following some simple safety proce-dures, you can ensure that you success-fully climb a ladder to your destination...without experiencing a fatal ‘downer’!

Choose the right ladder for the job. They range from very short step ladders to ex-tension ladders which must be well sup-ported. They are made of various materi-als such as fi berglass, aluminum or wood.

Examine your ladder before you use it. You do not want to use one which is defec-tive or in need of repair...it could mean injury to you!

The rungs, siderails and locking spread-ers should all be sturdy and in good condi-tion. Oil the spreaders on a regular basis to keep them working smoothly. Do not paint ladders. Cracks and splits may be hidden under the paint and the paint it-self may provide a slippery surface.

Instead of painting a ladder to protect it, try double-coating it with two coats of clear wood preservative such as shellac, varnish or linseed oil.

The steps or rungs should be solid and non-slip.

Aluminum ladders should not be bent out of shape. Make sure the ladders are free of grease, clean and dry.

Do not use aluminum ladders when working on or near electricity, even if all you are doing is changing a light bulb. Aluminum acts as a conductor for the

electricity and you could be seriously in-jured.

How you set up your ladder is important. The area where you are working should be clean, and people should be warned to stay away. The ladder should not be placed on an unstable foundation but rather on a solid, fl at surface. Position it so that you can easily reach your work.

Stepladders should be fully opened be-fore climbing. Extension ladders should be used with a one-to-four lean ratio. This means that for every four feet of height, the ladder should extend from the sup-porting wall by one foot.

All ladders should be fi rmly secured to prevent ‘kick-out’ when being used.

When you climb your ladder, have both hands free for climbing. Carry your tools up in a tool belt or placed in a bucket that can be hoisted as you climb.

Work smoothly on the ladder, avoiding sudden movements. If you cannot reach without your upper body going beyond the siderails...don’t do it!

It’s not a good idea to work on a ladder outside in bad weather. You could be put at risk by wind, blinded or faced with slip-pery conditions by rain or snow.

If you are feeling tired, dizzy, or are un-der the infl uence of drugs or alcohol, you should not be climbing a ladder. Not only is your judgment impaired, but also your physical agility and sense of balance.

For obvious safety reasons, only one person at a time should work on a ladder.

When you are fi nished using your lad-der, put it away in a safe, clean area where small children cannot play on it.

When you are up on a ladder, you should also be up on safety. Take the right steps to ensure that you climb with confi dence!

Wing Commander’s Honours and Awards Ceremony 5 December 2012

Private Tiff any Bell from Wing CE was recognized as the 8 Wing/CFB Tren-ton Service Person of the Quarter.

Mr. Michel Deschamps from Wing Supply was recognized as the 8 Wing Trenton Civilian Employee of the Quarter.

During July to September 2012, Pte. Bell constantly displayed a dedication and pro-fi ciency well beyond that expected of her rank and experience. Voluntary mem-

ber of the Mission Support Element, event organizer for both the 2012 Central Region Beaver Cup Hockey Tournament and Second Annual Fallen Sapper Memorial Golf Tournament and volunteer on the WCE Entertainment Committee, she performed all her primary and secondary duties against a backdrop of staff shortages in her sec-tion and often on her own time. The superb effort that she put forth showed a genuine concern for the mission and the morale of those she serves with.

Since Mr. Deschamps’ arrival in March 2009 at 8 Wing Supply, he has proven himself to be an exceptionally dedicated and hard-working employee. Mr. Deschamps’ tre-

mendous efforts ensured that 8 Wing Supply remained violation free in respect of the Canada Labour Code and the DND General Safety Program during the 8 Wing Supply Relocation Project. His professionalism, dedication and willingness to go above and beyond his daily duties are an example to all. Mr. Deschamps is the model of why civil-ians are an essential component of the Defence Team and how their contributions are so critical to operational success.
