3-D colour reformatted imagesobtained with multidetector CT(Computerized Tomography)

Steffi Bier uses this noveltechnique routinely. She is atechnician at the BirkenfeldSmall Animal Hospital, a multispecialist facility in thesouthwest of Germany.“We see considerable

advantages over plain CT images in thediagnosis of every day small animal healthproblems“ she says.„When it comes to exploring precise threedimensional positions of foreign bodies ortumors and their blood supply, reformatted

images are of unique benefit. The size of atumor and its evolution during the diseaseprocess, inflammatory areas, extent ofbleeding and many other problems can easilybe evaluated and monitored.”The hospitals consulting radiologist haspermanent web access to all images and isavailable via email. But 3-D colour imagingallows the understanding of complexanatomical structures by non-radiologists.It is of extraordinary help, particularly to thesurgeon. Pre-operative planning is like virtualreality computer games. “Our vets lovecommunicating with referring veterinariansand pet owners on 3D-CT-images, everybodyis impressed by their diagnostic potential andtheir value in advanced small animal healthcare”, Steffi says.

High opacity: Even folds of the tongue, skin„pores“ of whisker hair etc. can be viewed

High resolution, detailed boneanatomy

Teeth roots made visible Translucent head: ear ducts, middle ear andbullae - air filled structures put in evidence

All images were acquired on GE HiSpeed CT/e Dual. They were post-processed on GE’s AW(Advantage Workstation) using MDCT datasets from a single head scan of a single dog.

The combination of doxycycline andniacinamide proves not only to be useful inthe treatment of certain autoimmune orimmune mediated skin problems, but also canbe very helpful in ocular diseases likenodular granulomatous conjunctivitis of thethird eyelid. An unusual case of nodulargranulomatous conjunctivitis isolated to thethird eyelids in an Australian Kelpie has beenpublished in: Veterinary Ophthalmology 8 (5),349-352. Resolution of the condition wasachieved with a combination of oraldoxycycline, niacinamide and prednisolone.

Osteosarcoma (OSA) is by far the mostcommon primary bone tumor in dogs. Beforechoosing a treatment plan for canine OSA,complete tumor staging is warranted todetermine which options are mostreasonable: Approximately 90 percent ofdogs with appendicular OSA are thought tohave micrometastatic disease at the time ofdiagnosis and 10 percent to 15 percent mayhave other primary bone OSA sites.

Scintigraphy or survey radiography as partof the initial diagnostic workup in dogs withprimary osteosarcoma proves to detectother lesions more likely than commonthoracic radiography.

Rabbits have become very popular pets andtheir anesthesia still can be a challenge.According to the brandnew study publishedin Veterinary Anaesthesia and Analgesia (32(5), 280-288) a laryngeal mask airway(LMA) provides a better airway than afacemask in anesthetized rabbits – afacemask was even associated withhypercapnia and low partial pressures ofoxygen.

Horses: low-field MRI is a promising alternativein the standing patient that avoids the necessityfor general anesthesia and access toconventional high-field MRI scanners.

Ophthalmologic diagnostics: there are manydifferentials to consider in ataxia and visual

deficits in cats, as now reported also adult-onset cerebellar cortical abiotrophy andretinal degeneration.

Atresia Ani in dogs: increased incidence ofthis congenital anomaly - including congenitalanal stenosis (Type I); imperforate anus alone(Type II) or combined with more cranialtermination of the rectum as a blind pouch(Type III) - was found to be predominant infemales and in several breeds, e.g. miniatureor toy poodles and Boston terriers.

A migration of intranasal, periocular, orpharyngeal plant foreign bodies to the braincan be fatal: potential sequela are bacterialmeningoencephalitis and ventriculitis.

The California Los Angeles (UCLA)’sJonsson Cancer Center demonstrated astrategy to monitor a specific primary immuneresponse against a tumor challenge:positron emission tomography (PET)imaging makes observable how the immune
