The Archbishop’s Annual Appeal provides help to those in need! Together, we can and do make a profound difference in the lives of many individuals and families, in a way that exceeds anything we could hope to achieve on our own. Please consider supporting this important initiative. Every gift makes a difference. Organizations right here in our town received funding from the Appeal’s Vicariate Outreach Program which serves our local neighbors.
All funds contributed to the Archbishop’s Annual Appeal are used exclusively for the purposes outlined in the Appeal literature, which can be found at https://archdioceseofhartford.org/appeal/ No Appeal funds are ever used for legal fees or settlements.

My Dear Friends,
Today is Good Shepherd Sunday. In the midst of this crisis, we are all experiencing how much we need our shepherds. My own personal feeling is that religion, and the practice of religion, is essential. We are keeping liquor stores open and fast food restaurants are open, yet the celebration of the sacraments has been suspended. The spiritual life of the person is so extremely important. Jesus himself says to not fear the one who can destroy the body rather fear the one who can destroy the soul. We continue to turn to the Lord in the midst of this crisis for He is the Good Shepherd and as Psalm 23 says, “The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want; he makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters; he restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I fear no evil; for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff, they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of my enemies; thou anointest my head with oil, my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life; and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.” The chief shepherd of the Catholic faith is our Holy Father, the Pope, who is currently Pope Francis. The pope then appoints shepherds in dioceses to be the chief shepherd of that region. Our shepherd is Archbishop Leonard Blair. Then the archbishop will appoint priests to be shepherds of individual parishes. I am your unworthy servant at St. Katharine Drexel. All shepherds are called to lay down their lives for you, whether figuratively or literally, depending on the circumstances. On this Good Shepherd Sunday, let us pray to the master to send more workers into the vineyard. Since the beginning of the ministry by the eleven Apostles, there has always been a shortage of laborers. This shortage will never go away, but our desire to see laborers enter into the vineyard is what leads us all to work towards vocations. The vocations to the sacred priesthood are out there, but the young men who are being called are not listening or are not hearing the call. St. John Vianney, pray for us and pray for those who are being called that they may hear the voice of the Good Shepherd.
God bless, Fr. John
