    How to build a 8×10 chicken coop run

    Building the skids

    The first step of the project is to build the skids for the base. Make notches to both ends ofthe skids, as shown in the diagram. Use a circular saw to make 1 3/4″ parallel cuts tobeams and then remove the excess with a chisel. Smooth the edges with sandpaper for aprofessional result.

    Assembling the base

    Level the surface for the chicken coop run and then lay the beam, as shown in the diagram.Drill pilot holes and insert 3 1/2″ screws, so you can lock the skids together tightly. Makesure the corners are square and then lock them into the ground with 2×3 stakes.

  • Right side wall – Frame

    Continue the project by framing the right side wall for the chicken coop run. Cut all thecomponents from 2×4 lumber. Drill pilot holes through the rim joists and insert 3 1/2″screws into the studs.

    Left Side wall – Frame

    Build the opposite side wall for the coop run in the same manner described above. Drill3/11

  • pilot holes and lock everything with 3 1/2″ screws. Place the studs every 24″ on center, asshown in the diagram.

    Front wall – frame

    Next, you have to frame the front wall for the chicken coop run. You need to leave enoughspace of the door opening. You can adjust the size of the door opening to suit your needs.

    Back wall – Frame

  • Build the back wall from 2×4 lumber and using the techniques described above.

    Assembling the frame of the coop run

    After building the wall frames you need to attach them into place tightly. Drill pilot holesthrough the walls and secure them to the skids with 2 1/2″ screws. Moreover, you need tolock the adjacent walls together tightly using 2 1/2″ screws. Make sure the walls are plumbbefore inserting the screws.

  • Building the rafters

    Build the rafters for the chicken coop run from 2×2 lumber. Make miter cuts to both ends ofthe rafters, as shown in the diagram.

    Fitting the top ridge

    Fit the top ridge to the frame of the coop run. Drill pocket holes at both ends of the supportsand secure them into place with 2 1/2″ screws. Plumb the supports with a spirit level andmake sure the corners are square. Fit the top ridge into place and make sure the cornersare square. Insert the 2 1/2″ screws.

  • Fitting the rafters

    Fit the rafters to the top of the coop run. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws to securethe rafters into place tightly.

    Back wall – Trims

    Fit chicken wire mesh to the exterior of the walls and staple it into place tightly, afterstretching it properly. Next, fit the 1×2 trims along the framing, as show in the diagram. Drill

  • pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws so you can lock the trims into place tightly.

    Front wall – Trims

    Fit the trims to the opposite side of the chicken coop run. Align the edges flush for aprofessional result.

  • Fit the trims to the side of the chicken coop run.

    Roof trims

    Last but not least, you need to fit the trims to the top of the coop run. Cut the trims at theright dimensions and then secure them along the rafters with 1 5/8″ screws.

    Door trims

  • Build the frame of the door from 2×2 lumber. Drill pilot holes and insert 2 1/2″ screws toassemble the frame of the door tightly.

    Building the door

    Staple the chicken wire mesh to the door frame and then secure it into place with 1×2 trims.Drill pilot holes and insert 1 5/8″ screws to secure the trims along the door, every 8″/

    Fitting the door

  • Fit the door to the front opening and then secure it to the jambs with hinges. Install a smalllatch so you can keep the door locked. Moreover, you should secure the coop run to theshed using screws.
