PENTECOST: “BY ANY OTHER NAME…” “What’s in a name? That which we call a rose By any other name would smell as sweet.” -Shakespeare Pentecost is the name of the feast. It is quite liter-ally “the fiftieth day.” In Judaism it refers to the fifti-eth day after Passover. It is also called the “Feast of Weeks” or, in Hebrew, Shavuot. Jewish Pente-cost is a harvest festival (Exodus 23:16) - - the gathering of first fruits. It is also associated with the Covenant on Mt. Sinai. In Christianity, Pentecost is the fiftieth and final day of the Easter Season. It closely parallels the Jew-ish celebration in that Easter is considered the Christian Passover. On Pentecost, the Holy Spirit descended upon the apostles and the Blessed Vir-gin in the form of tongues of fire (Acts 2). Power was given them. Their lives were transformed by the Gifts of the Spirit - - Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Fortitude, Knowledge, Piety and Fear of the Lord. Pentecost is considered the “Birthday of the Church” and the beginning of the Church’s world-wide Mission. The old English name for Pentecost is Whitsun or the “Sunday in White.” This may seem a misnomer because red is the prescribed color of vestments worn at the Liturgical celebration of the day. But in Festivals, Family and Food, British authors Diana Carey and Judy Lange explain Pentecost’s other name: By tradition the appearance of the white dove at Pentecost lends itself to the theme of “white,” as did the white gowns worn by newly Baptized

coverts. In northern Europe the connotation is also a natural one, with the blooming of white May, Hawthorn and Lilac at this time. Whitsun was kept as a public, extended holiday in England and parts of Europe. Feasting and merry-making characterized Whitsuntide. Bowers were often built in churchyards, where the “Lord and Lady of Whitsun” Ale were ceremoniously en-throned. Whitsunday was the High Feast of King Arthur’s Court. We are told: “all manner of strange adventures came before King Arthur at that feast afore all others.” While “Old England” is fast disappearing, within the memory of many, Whitsun was a Spring bank holi-day - - a traditional time for processions, plays and Morris dances.” Today however, few would take the charming advice of the authors of Festivals, Family and Food seriously: “Have a cake with white icing for tea, perhaps with an icing dove nesting on it . . . Try to wear some-thing white . . . and always have milk and coconut macaroons.” And I wonder how many people have ever seen a Morris Dance, let alone be able to explain it. A Happy Whitsunday, Pentecost or what you will! -Fr. Luczak

The 2013 Mass Book is now available. Anyone wishing to reserve Masses for loved ones or special intentions may do so.

Please note: we will take only one intention for each liturgy. We suggest a $10.00 stipend for each Mass.

According to the Code of Canon Law 948: Separate Masses must be applied for the intentions of those for whom an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted. What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses offered for individual intentions.

ALTAR FLOWERS CAN BE A BEAUTIFUL TRIBUTE Parishioners are invited to decorate the altar with flowers in honor or memory of a loved one. There will be two ar-rangements each week. Your name and intention will be listed in the Bulletin. The cost of a flower arrangement will be $50.00. After Pentecost, Altar Flowers will be available from the weekend of June 3rd through Thanksgiving Day, November 22nd. Dates fill up quickly, so please book well in advance. Please call the Rectory at 847-967-1060 to arrange a date and make your remembrance special!

HUMAN CONCERNS MINISTRY OF CARE The Ministry of Care will meet this Tuesday, May 29, beginning at 6:30 p.m. Following dinner we will have a brief meeting to review next year’s calendar and discuss any issues and then have our discussion of the book Don’t Sing Songs to a Heavy Heart. SPIRITUAL LIFE MEMORIAL DAY MASS The Memorial Day Mass will be Monday at 9:00 a.m. Please note that this will be the only Mass of the day. BLESSING OF GRADUATES Next weekend near the end of each Mass we will acknowledge all Graduates with a blessing. So when Father asks the Graduates to please stand or come forward, we hope you will do so. Whether it is graduation from preschool, kindergar-ten, junior high, high school, language and culture school, college, or further, our faith community wants to congratulate you and pray for God’s blessing upon you. We look forward to being with you! CORPUS CHRISTI PROCESSION The Corpus Christi Procession will begin at the end of the Noon Mass on Sunday, June 10th. Scripture readings, hymns, and prayers will be offered in Polish, Italian, Spanish and Tagalog. Our Sharing Parish, Maternity BVM, will again join us for this special event. All are welcome so please invite your family, friends, and neighbors! Weather permitting we will process from the church to the field over by the rectory where the four altars will be set up. If the weather is good, but the ground is wet from previous days’ rain, the altars will be set up around the property. Parts of the parking lot may be blocked of that day for set up and for the safety of all during the procession. The back road gate will be closed at 12:15 p.m. Parking will be available at Colonial Funeral Home. If you do not plan on staying for the procession, you may want to park over there. Once the procession begins, you will not be able to move your car from our parking lot until the proces-sion has safely moved to the field or the first altar if we are going around the property. Ushers will be in the parking lot to facilitate movement. Please follow their direction. Please pray that the weather cooperates, but if it should not, we will have the procession inside with the altars set u in the Holy Family Room and the school. Hospitality will follow the event. If you would like to bring food to share, please drop it off in the Holy Family Room before the Noon Mass (but no earlier than 11:30 a.m.) We would also appreciate help with serving the food and with clean up outside and in the Holy Family Room. Any children of the parish who received their First Communion this year and encouraged to wear their First Communion clothes and help throw flower petals in front of the Blessed Sacrament during the procession. To offer your help, please call the Religious Education Office this week: 847/966-1180. To groups responsible for the altars: Please call the RE Office by this Friday to give us the title and words of the hymn you will be singing, if it is different from last year. We would also like the names of the two people who will be helping with the canopy during the procession and of the person or persons who will be helping with set up that Sunday morning. Thank you.

OUR LADY OF SCHOENSTATT:

A Covenant of Love In the 1980’s I was intro-duced to the Schoenstatt Movement. Friends from St. Paul of the Cross sug-gested that we visit a Schoenstatt Chapel on the way to Milwaukee. It was a beautiful May after-noon and I found the chapel, in its rural setting, charming. Along with a brochure and a prayer card, I put other Schoenstatt information into my resource file and forgot about it! Not long ago, I was watching EWTN Live. Fr. Mitch Pacwa’s guest was a Priest-director of the Schoenstatt Movement. I remembered my brief experience almost thirty years ago and listened to the discussion with renewed interest. I learned that Schoenstatt began in Germany. Fr. Joseph Kentenich, its founder, gathered members of a Marian Sodality together on October 18, 1914. In the small chapel where they met, the sodality members made a Covenant of Love with the Blessed Virgin to their chapel to “work miracles of grace in men’s hearts and thus renew the world.” “Schoenstatt” means “beautiful place” in German. The group Fr. Kentenich and his handful of soda-lists formed has grown into an International Apos-tolic Movement. Since World War II ended, its mis-sion, its outreach, has been world-wide. The movement has, among its six secular institutes, fifteen federations and leagues, about 200,000 members. Their commitment to asceticism, com-munity life, Marian devotion, and the apostolate varies only in degree, but not in essential philoso-phy. The Schoenstatt “philosophy” and its “mission” en-gage people from all “walks of life.” Schoenstatt involves people of all ages and cultures in renewal through spiritual striving. A central focus, in mis-sionary work, charity, education and all that mem-bers do, is the Blessed Virgin Mary. She is hon-ored as queen. On the 18th of each month, mem-bers of Schoenstatt and “pilgrims” celebrate

Prayer

Mother Thrice Admirable, Queen and Victress of Schoenstatt, help me to live each day with a practical faith in Divine Providence. Let me be calm and really listen to what God asks of me each day. Accept my heart as a gift for your divine Son, and help me to keep my baptismal covenant with the Triune God.

covenant day by renewing their commitment to serv-ing God through Mary’s example and inspiration and help. A picture of the Madonna and Child from an original painting by a 19th Century Italian artist named Luigi Crosio has become the holy icon of the Movement. Once known as the “Refuge of Sinners,” the depic-tion of Our Lady is now called “Mother, Thrice Admi-rable, Queen and Victress of Schoenstatt,” Mary is honored as: 1. Mother of God 2. Mother of Redeemer, and 3. Our Mother Fr. Kentenich once wrote:

“Keep your place in the heart of Our Lady. You belong there whatever happens. There you will find peace, security and confidence in the victory in every circumstance and every instance. Do good where the opportunity arises, and see a kind father-hand in every-thing. He guides your destiny according to His wise plan or love.”

Schoenstatt spirituality is intensely relational and warmly “domestic” -- home centered. A Schoenstatt chapel seems to recall the emotion of “homecoming,” security and peace. And it is all be-cause of the loving Motherhood of Mary.

WOMAN’S CLUB - WOMAN OF THE YEAR!

The Woman’s Club nominee for 2012 Woman of the Year joined our parish 46 years ago and the Women’s Club the very next day. She and her husband raised four children who all attended St. Isaac Jogues school, and she has been blessed with 10 grandchildren. She was active with all of their school activities and fund raisers during her children’s time at St. Isaac’s and still found time to be a girl scout leader. She worked with our special needs children for over 25 years and for the past 5 years has been active with our parish SPRED ministry. She goes to Mass daily, serving whenever needed. She has been a liturgical minister for 34 years. For the past 5 years she has been a money counter for the parish. She has been a volunteer on the parish raffle committee. For the past 3 years, she has volunteered with Catholic Charities in Des Plaines, lending assistance to their food pantry or wherever needed. She has been a guild leader at least ten times, she lost count! She has served as a Commission Head for Church Communities, Family Concerns and Community Concerns not once but multiple times. She has chaired the Nominating Committee on multiple occasions, organized our days of recollection and arranged entertainment for our quarterly programs. She has served on special committees for the Liv-ing Rosary, receptions for the clergy, special events, farewell receptions, special liturgies, Christmas bazaars, fashion shows, bake sales, wine tastings, casino nights, coat drives and fund raisers of all kind. She is always there when a volunteer is needed for guild, women’s club or parish activities and functions. Our nominee is a woman of all seasons who always volunteers with a smile on her face and an out-stretched helping hand. It is with pride that we nominate Mary Burke as our “Woman of the Year.”

No one is denied religious education due to finances. *Registration for the 2012-2013 RE Program has begun! Families who are new to the program should contact the RE Office, 847/966-1180, to set up a time to pick up or fill out paperwork. A copy of each child’s baptismal certificate will be needed (if the child was not baptized here at St. Isaac Jogues Parish). Tuition for 2012-2013 for parishioners (those registered in the parish and who use their envelopes and/or give time to the parish through a ministry) is: $160 – one child; $270 – two children; $330 – three or more children. Tuition for non-parishioners (those not registered in the parish, or who are registered but do not use their envelopes or give time) is: $240 – one child; $350 – two children; $410 – three or more children. Sacrament fees are: First Reconciliation/First Communion -- $50; Confirmation Year I -- $10; Confirmation Year II -- $30. RE Classes for Kindergarten are on Sunday mornings, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Grades 1-Confirmation Year II meet on Monday evenings, 6:45-8:00 p.m. Families are strongly encouraged to have their children attend each year as no one year fully covers and forms a child’s faith development. Please note that a child must participate in religious educa-tion classes, either through an RE Program or a Catholic School, the two years prior to receiving a sacrament. Families with older children who have not yet received religious education or sacraments or who have children with special needs are encouraged to call us to discuss options available. For more information on registration please call the RE Office, 847/966-1180. CATHOLICISM SERIES The final episode of Fr. BULLETIN SICK LIST The sick and hospitalized are to be held in thought and prayer. For their family, friends, and faith community it is often times the best, and sometimes even only, way we can help and support them. Yet we must remember that by law we cannot publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. What that means is that we cannot put peo-ple’s names in the bulletin sick list for prayer without permission. As a reminder our policy is as follows: Names for the sick list in the bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family and if they give per-mission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person’s name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. The name will be in the bulletin for one month. Then the person’s name will be inscribed in the Book of Community Prayer. All people and prayer requests are remembered during the petitions at all the weekend Masses. Their names will also be given to our Ministers of Praise to pray for them daily.
