REFLECTIONS FOR A LENTEN JOURNEY

George Herbert’s Dialogue with God

George Herbert

“Teach me, my God and King, In all things Thee to see.” - The Elixir George Herbert (1593 -1633) was a contemporary of Brother Lawrence (1605-1691). That they ever corresponded, met, or even knew of each other's existence is highly unlikely. Nevertheless, there is an important spiritual "connection” between them. Both of them had an intense and lively awareness of the presence of God. That perception of divine immanence shaped their writings and is a unique part of their spiritual legacies. . Brother Lawrence George Herbert and Brother Lawrence had practically nothing in common except God! George Herbert, the scion of an educated, artistic and aristocratic family, was a scholar, poet, one-time member of parliament, and an Anglican priest. Brother Lawrence was a peasant. In service to a noble family as a footman, he broke almost everything he touched. He was a bit of "walking catastrophe." At one time, George Herbert was a favorite of King James I and had influential patrons. He was a Major Fellow at Cambridge University and

held the prestigious position of Orator from 1620-1628. Brother Lawrence spent most of his time in the monastery kitchen. George Herbert’s secular aspirations changed with the deaths of the king, his mother, and two powerful patrons. With the prayerful advice of John Donne, he sought ordination to the diaconate and the priesthood. In 1630, he began his ministry at Bemberton. Even though George Herbert was a "country parson,” he continued his scholarly pursuits-- especially writing poetry. The poetry he composed was almost exclusively on religious themes. He wrote secular poems, but destroyed them before his death so strongly did he believe in the superiority of his religious works. What were the chief characteristics of George Herbert’s poetry? It was intellectual in structure, precise in phrasing and expression. It possessed a kind of "creative tension." As a "Metaphysical Poet," George Herbert was a master of "discors concordia" - - a union of opposite images or feelings. What appears to be conflict is tempered by calm trust. What seems anxious speculation is balanced against childlike faith. Herbert excels in the use of conceits (elaborate metaphors) but with refreshing directness and originality. Beyond all these characteristics, there is something else. It is the perception that many of Herbert's poems are not monologues, but dialogues-- dialogues between the poet-priest and his God! The Pulley has always been a favorite of mine. It speaks of God's creation of man. It is wonderfully simple, describing God's lavish bestowal of every gift save one--REST. God withholds only that. Why? For if I should (said he) Bestow this jewell also on my creature, He would adore my gifts in stead of me, And rest in Nature, not the God of Nature.” So both should losers be. Yet him keep the rest, But keep them with repining restlesnesse: Let him be rich and wearie, that at least, If goodnesse leade him not, yet wearinesse May tosse him to my breast. The Collar is the emotional antithesis of The

Pulley. It is not a revelation of divine order, but of a disordered, disappointed human life: I struck the board, and cry'd, No more. I will abroad. What? Shall I ever sigh and pine?... Have I no harvest but a thorn To let me bloud, and not restore What I have lost with cordiall fruit? Plainly, most of the poem expresses a desire to discard the "collar" and reject the "call of God." The repetition of "I will abroad" is the rant of disillusioned, and angry minister. Is there an echo here of Jeremiah 20:7? You duped me, O Lord, and I let myself be duped; you were too strong for me, and you triumphed. All the day I am an object of laughter; everyone mocks me. However the “cleric” in The Collar may be less a Jeremiah than a Jonah. Jonah also wished to be "abroad." He desired to run away but was pursued by God. Despite these Biblical parallels, the “rebel” cleric continues to rebel. But something, someone, changes everything. But as I rav’d and grew more fierce and wilde At every word, Me thoughts I heard one calling, Child: And I reply'd, My Lord. In one word, God's love is pledged anew. God’s call is likewise renewed. The poet finds peace. There is no need to go “abroad.” Why should he run away from love? I chose George Herbert for this Reflection for a Lenten Journey because whether in harmony or conflict, his poetry assures us that God’s presence is dynamically offered to us. Brother Lawrence had less comfortable surroundings than a country parsonage. Yet, like Herbert, the erudite Anglican divine, he saw beyond his ordinary, even disquieting, daily routine:

“The time of business does not with me differ from the time of prayer, and in the noise and clutter of my kitchen, while several persons are at the same time calling for different things, I possess God in as great tranquility as if I were on my knees at the Blessed Sacrament.”

Lent should lead us to a sublime recognition of God's presence in order or disorder, in harmony or discord, in success or failure, in the way of the Cross or in the welcome of our journey’s end—”peace!” - Fr. Luczak

The Pulley

When God at first made man,

Having a glasse of blessings standing by; Let us (said he) poure on him all we can;

Let the worlds riches, which dispersed lie, Contract into a span.

So strength first made a way; Then beautie flow'd, then wisdome, honour, pleasure: When almost all was out, God made a stay, Perceiving that alone of all his treasure Rest in the bottome lay. For if I should (said he) Bestow this jewell also on my creature, He would adore my gifts in stead of me, And rest in Nature, not the God of Nature: So both should losers be. Yet let him keep the rest, But keep them with repining restlesnesse: Let him be rich and wearie, that at least, If goodnesse leade him not, yet wearinesse May tosse him to my breast. - George Herbert

PARISH LIFE

2011 The 2011 Mass Book is now open. Anyone wishing to reserve Masses for loved ones or special inten-tions may do so. Please note: we will take only one intention for each liturgy. We suggest a $10.00 stipend for each Mass. According to the Code of Canon Law 948: Separate Masses must be applied for the intentions of those for whom an individual offering, even if small, has been made and accepted. What is normative in the practice of the Church is that there be separate individual Masses of-fered for individual intentions. Therefore, the practice of combining individual intentions on a regular basis has ceased at St. Isaac Jogues Parish.

Holy Thursday Pilgrimage For many years the community of St. Isaac Jogues has made a pilgrimage to other churches on Holy Thursday. The Liturgy of the Lord's Last Supper is at 7:30 p.m. We leave promptly at 9:00 p.m. and return to St. Isaac's by midnight. Why on this night do we travel from church to church to praise the Lord? It was at the Last Sup-per Jesus gave us the everlasting symbol of His eternal presence in our lives. He gave us the mir-acle of the Holy Eucharist to remind us always that He is with us to help and strengthen us as we go about living our lives. As the community of Christian believers grew, it soon came to encom-pass the whole world.

Over the years, the Eucharist became a symbol not only of Christ's presence among us, but also of Christ's command that we all be one in love for Him and for each other. So, on this night we trav-el about to share ours and each other's celebra-tion for the Holy Eucharist with one another. If you wish to join us, it is necessary to reserve a seat on the bus. It is important to make a reservation early as we will have just one bus. Please call the rectory (847-967-1060). A donation of $5.00 per person is requested to offset the cost of the bus.

ST. JOSEPH TABLE

$1674 was donated by those who shared in the St. Joseph Table. Once a few more bills are paid for St. Joseph Table expenses, St. Vincent De Paul Society will receive what remains of the monies donated to prepare the St. Joseph Table. We also thank these donors who we missed on last week’s list, but whose generosity and support were a big help to the St. Joseph Table: Pete Miller’s, Evanston and Ignacy Paderewski School of the Polish Language.

On February 22, 1931, Our Lord Jesus Christ appeared to Sister Faustina (Helena Kowalska), A Sister of Our Lady of Mercy, in Cracow, Poland. In her diary for that date this simple and humble nun wrote: “In the evening, when I was in my cell, I became aware of the Lord Jesus clothed in a white garment. One hand was raised in blessing, the other was touching the garment at the breast. From the opening in the garment at the breast there came forth two large rays, one red, and the other pale. In silence I gaze intently at the Lord; my soul was overwhelmed with fear, but also with great joy. After a while Jesus said to me: ‘Paint an image according to the pattern you see, with the

inscription: Jesus, I trust in You!’” Some time later He spoke to her again. “The pale ray stands for the water which makes souls righteous; the red ray stands for the blood which is the life of souls. These two rays issued forth from the depths of My most tender Mercy at that time when My agonizing Heart was opened by a lance on the Cross.” Sr. Faustina also was to ask for the Sunday after Easter to be acknowledged by the Church as the Feast of Mercy. In 1993 Pope John Paul II responded to this request by designating the Sunday after Easter as Mercy Sunday. In anticipation of the Feast our Lord specifically asked that nine days of special prayers to the Divine Mercy begin on Good Friday along with the recitation of the Chaplet of Divine Mercy. Devotional pamphlets will be available at the doors of our church next weekend. The Feast of Mercy Mass will be celebrated on April 11th at Noon. It will follow with Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament until 3 p.m. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be available from 2-3 p.m. with confessions being heard in both English and Polish. The Chaplet of Divine Mercy will be prayed at 3 p.m. followed by Benediction. All are encouraged to participate as able.

St. Isaac Jogues Church Rev. Andrew Luczak 8149 Golf Road Niles, IL 60714 Dear Rev. Luczak and the Parishioners of St. Isaac Jogues Church, Thank you for your $4922.00 contribution to Catholic Relief Services for the Haiti earthquake. CRS is responding immediately to the earthquake that rocked Port-au-Prince, the capital of Haiti. CRS has committed at least $25 million for relief and recovery in Haiti, and has received$13.1 million in cash donations and commitments thus far. CRS has food and relief supplies pre-positioned in Haiti. Additional supplies such as plastic sheeting, hygiene kits, mosquito nets, and water purification tablets are being loaded in the Dominican Republic for distribution in Haiti. At the heavily damaged port in Port-au-Prince, a ship carrying 1,500 metric tons of supplies from USAID Food for Peace docked in the one operational berth. CRS personnel worked to offload the containers as they planned for a secure and orderly distribution. "Finding suitable distribution points is a big challenge because you have crowd control issues when a big crowd arrives," says Donal Reilly, deputy director of the emergency response team for CRS. "When we've got so little to give compared to the needs, it's difficult, as you may not have enough for everyone." At the St. Francois de Sales hospital, which has been working with CRS as part of the AIDS Relief consortium– CRS delivered enough medical and food supplies to allow the doctors there to perform their first operation since the earthquake. Though the surgery was conducted in a habitable building of the hospital, CRS staff say the facility is about 70 percent destroyed and will need a long-term reconstruction. CRS has formed six medical teams, each consisting of a medical doctor and a nurse, to provide primary care at several sites where people have gone for shelter. At one site, an AIDS Relief doctor began providing care on his own. When CRS staff discovered this, they made plans to get him medical supplies. CRS has been in Haiti for more than 55 years. CRS trucks coming from Santo Domingo in the Dominican Republic brought in enough food for 2,500 people for several days as well as hygiene kits and plastic sheeting for shelter. CRS has been distributing such materials at several informal camps and other places where the homeless gathered after the earthquake. On the ground CRS is working with partners from Caritas, the international Catholic aid network, to coordinate their aid response. The agency is also joining most aid groups in working with the United Nations as it becomes functional following the destruction of its Haiti headquarters and the death of many of its workers. Please continue to pray for the people of Haiti. Again, thank you for your generous donation. Note: No goods or services were received for this donation. Sincerely, Adrienne Curry Program Director, CRS

ADDING NAMES TO THE PARISH SICK LIST It has always been the policy of St. Isaac Jogues to offer our parish community an opportunity to pray for those parish-ioners who are ill and in need of our prayers. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no long-er accept names in this manner. We will institute a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/ herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the cor-rect spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill — but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our con-gregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard.
