Convocation 2010 | 1
Graduation marks an important stage in every student’s life. It’s a
time to stop and reflect, to look back at what you’ve achieved—the
many courses and programs you’ve taken, the countless tests and
examinations you’ve endured, the triumphs (and sometimes the
disappointments) that you have doubtless experienced in the lecture
room or the lab. It’s a time also to recall the non-academic side of
life at UBC: the friends you’ve made, the pains or pleasures of living
in dorms, the hours spent debating politics or philosophy or football.
Above all, graduation is a time to take stock of what you’ve learned,
and to recognize a simple but significant truth: that during the last four
or five years you have acquired the skills, knowledge, and training that
will enable you to make a strong contribution to our society, whether in
civic, professional, or private life.
New decisions now face you. For graduation also marks the moment of
transition from apprenticeship into practice, from learning into action;
the moment at which you must contemplate your future and choose
your direction. Some new graduates, such as those in professional
schools like medicine or law, have already made their choice; others
have yet to arrive at a firm decision.
Whatever direction you eventually choose, be confident that your
UBC education has developed in you the qualities needed to help you
achieve your goals—the knowledge that is the foundation of your
discipline, the capacity for understanding that comes with critical
thinking, and the open mind that accompanies intellectual curiosity and
imagination. As long as you build on those fundamental qualities, you
will continue to enjoy the kind of success that we celebrate today with
your graduation.
Your degree signifies a great accomplishment, the completion of a
lengthy and demanding academic program. Now you are ready to
move on to the next challenge, whether that lies in further academic
studies or in a particular profession. As a graduate of UBC, you have
acquired skills, insights, and ideals that will serve you well in the future.
You have an understanding of your responsibilities as a citizen of
society. I encourage you to become involved, and to offer your ideas
and solutions with the confidence that they will be heard and respected.
Whatever your choice of career, be prepared to encounter challenges
that call on the expertise and understanding you have developed as a
student at UBC. Society will look to you to help eradicate the injustice
and poverty suffered by so many around the world. It will depend upon
you for solutions to the social, economic, and environmental issues that
afflict us all. Your critical and analytical abilities will also come into play
as you begin to exercise the responsibilities of global citizenship and
move into leadership roles.
I have the utmost confidence that you will succeed, and that wherever
you find yourself you will contribute to UBC’s reputation as a great
university. My warmest good wishes go with you!

Message from the Chancellor
| Convocation 20102
A threshold is a piece of wood or stone placed at the base of a doorway.
Opening a door allows you to enter one place and leave another for
the starting point of a new experience or way of being, removing a
boundary beyond which exists a radically different state of affairs. For
the graduating students of the University of British Columbia, today you
stand at a new door. You may wonder if you are ready to move through
this passage way, and it is my honour to remind you that you are.
If you look behind you—not in distance but in time—you will see
another day like this one in your past: the day you arrived and chose
this university to forge a new key to your future. Today’s ceremony
marks the end of a long and rigorous preparation, and the beginning
of all that you have prepared for: service, contribution, responsibility,
discovery, dreams made real.
You will have myriad opportunities throughout your life, and perhaps
it will seem impossible to make decisions each time choices are
presented to you. At those times, remember that you know you can do
impossible things, because you have done them, and that every one of
those seemingly impossible things presented an opportunity to leave
a wish behind in order to make it a reality: rising at dawn to make your
way to the field for practice; teaching your first class; speaking your
first words in a new language, or your ancestral one; seeing the meeting
place between economics and ecology; finding a lifelong friend in a
packed lecture hall; writing three exams in a day; singing an aria; trading
social time for the study hall again and again. Discovering the world in a
single particle. Discovering parts of yourself you didn’t know were there
until you were called upon to read, to speak, to speak out, to serve… to
change.
And I expect this experience has changed you. I hope so. Whether
you knew it or not when you chose this university, you came here
to change—your self and your future and all its possibilities. So
now you number among the more than 250,000 artists, educators
and entrepreneurs, parliamentarians and opera singers, architects,
scientists, doctors and journalists who call UBC their alma mater.
You have acquired critical tools and professional skills, the ability to
develop and communicate your ideas and an understanding of other
communities and cultures that will enable you to do even more of
what others consider impossible: to seek solutions, to lead the way, to
change the future.
I hope you will look on your time here with pleasure, and that you will
make UBC a part of your future. You will always be welcome here,
and we look forward to hearing about your personal and professional
achievements as you build on the foundation provided by your UBC
degree.
Before you go, I would ask you to remember for a moment the person
you were when you first arrived, and say thank you. You said yes then
to a future you could hardly imagine, and today you have arrived at its
beginning. Let me thank you, too: for your contribution to UBC, and for
all the contributions you will make beyond these doors as a result of
your time here.
To the graduating class of 2010, my thanks, and my warmest
congratulations!

Elders, Chiefs, Board of Governors, dignitaries, Okanagan faculty,
staff, family, friends, visitors, students and graduates, on behalf of the
Okanagan Nation Chiefs and our member communities we welcome
you to our beautiful territory and to the UBC Okanagan Campus Spring
Convocation 2010. We are pleased to be provided this opportunity
to extend our congratulations to all the new Okanagan graduates of
UBC. We are honoured to be part of your Convocation. Ceremony
and recognition of achievement, and the meaning inherent in special
events like this one, have always been an integral part of syilx culture,
beliefs and customs. Learning has always been fundamental to the
well-being and survival of our communities, Okanagan people valued
life-long learning. Education and academic excellence are also a part
of syilx culture. The honoring of one’s intellect and knowledge has
always been important. The Okanagan traditions and ceremonies
awarded achievement no matter how big or small. Announcements
were made to the Nation that “this is a day of significance to this
person, (family and/or community) and you are all welcome to share
in this celebration”. The Okanagan shared their land, their teaching,
and their culture with others and now as graduates, you too will have
this opportunity to share your education with the community. Your
educational attainment will serve you well, especially if you use it to
serve your communities! The Okanagan Nation Alliance and UBC
have forged a new path of partnership and inclusion so that we can all
learn to embrace, strengthen and celebrate our diversity. The pursuit
of academic excellence will continue to advance and transform our
societies. Okanagan participation in today’s Convocation ceremony and
within this University bodes well for our future and our communities.

Academic Regalia
The wearing of academic costume is a tradition that has
persisted from the Middle Ages, when the first Universities
were founded. The regalia vary slightly from one University
to another, and within a University, according to the status
of the wearer. At the University of British Columbia, the
undergraduate’s and Master’s gown are black.
The colours for the degrees being granted in 2010 at UBC’s
Okanagan campus are as follows:
B.A. – University blue
B.Ed. – White with University blue cord
B.F.A. – University blue with magenta cord
B.Mgt. – Light grey with a black and gold cord
B.S.N. – Scarlet with University blue and white twisted cord
B.S.W. – Magenta
B.Sc. – Light blue
M.A. – Fully lined University blue
M.A.Sc. – Fully lined scarlet
M.Ed. – Fully lined white with University blue cord
M.F.A. – Fully lined University blue with magenta cord
M.S.N. – Fully lined scarlet with blue and white cord
M.S.W. – Fully lined magenta
M.Sc. – Fully lined light blue
The Bachelor’s hood is edged with the distinctive colour. The Master’s
hood is the same as the Bachelor’s, except that it is lined with the
distinctive colour.
The regalia of the Ph.D. consists of a gown, Cambridge style, of maroon
silk with front-facing panel and sleeves of University blue with gold
piping; a hood, Cambridge pattern, of blue silk outside and gold lining; a
cap, decanal bonnet, of maroon silk with gold cord and tassel.
The hood for the honorary degree LL.D. is of scarlet broadcloth
lined in dark blue velvet; for the D.Sc., it is lined in dark purple
and for the D.Litt., it is lined in cream.

Congregation or Convocation?
People often ask why UBC calls its graduation ceremonies
“Congregation.” There are no records to say why this term was
originally adopted but it has been used by UBC since its first graduation
ceremonies in 1916 and is believed to originate from its use in English
institutions such as Oxford and Cambridge. According to Wikipedia, “a
congregation is an assembly of people for a given purpose; with respect
to a university, it is a formal meeting of senior members of the University.
Examples include the Regent House in the University of Cambridge and
the House of Congregation and the Ancient House of Congregation in the
University of Oxford. Stemming from this tradition, in some universities a
graduation ceremony is known as a congregation, even if the ceremony is
not a meeting of the university’s governing body in the traditional sense.”
For whatever reason, UBC adopted this term for its graduation
ceremonies in 1916 and has used it ever since when inviting faculty,
students and guests to the Annual and more recently the Spring and Fall
graduation ceremonies. UBC is unique amongst Canadian institutions in
that it appears to be the only institution that still uses this term.
The term ‘Convocation’ at UBC is more often used to describe a group
of people – defined by the University Act – including the Chancellor,
President, members of the Senate, all faculty members and all graduates
of the University. The Convocation, through the Chancellor who serves
as its chair, confers degrees, including honorary degrees, and awards
diplomas and certificates of proficiency.
In Fall 2007, UBC Vancouver Senate reconfirmed its preference to
maintain the tradition of using the term ‘Congregation’ for its graduation
ceremonies. In Spring 2008, the UBC Okanagan Senate passed a
motion that “Convocation be adopted as the name for meetings of the
UBC convocation held at UBC Okanagan for the purposes of conferring
degrees, effective June 2008.”
Did you know…?
• UBC’s first Congregation ceremony took place on May 4, 1916 in the
Hotel Vancouver ballroom. There were 41 graduates.
• UBC’s first graduate degrees were conferred in 1919.
• The first Congregation ceremony on the Point Grey campus was held
in 1927.
• The first graduation ceremony was held at UBC ‘s Okanagan campus
on June 9, 2006.
• The first graduate degrees were conferred at UBC’s Okanagan campus
on June 6, 2008.

The Univers ity Mace
The University Mace is a symbol of the authority of the UBC Chancellor.
It is displayed on ceremonial occasions, most notably during the
Convocation ceremonies but also during the Installation of a President
or Chancellor.
The Mace is carried by the ‘Macebearer’ who leads the Platform Party,
which includes the Chancellor, the President and other dignitaries, onto
the stage for the Convocation ceremonies.
Created by First Nations artist Sheldon Louis of the Okanagan Indian
Band, the University Mace is carved from a single piece of alder wood,
and combines Okanagan Nation traditions with university customs.
The main art work on the Mace features three symbolic spirit icons—a
mother bear with her two cubs, the image of the mountains, and water
— given to UBC Okanagan in 2005 by the Okanagan Nation elders. The
spirit icon gifts were selected by a group of First Nation elders, led by
Andrew McGinnis, an Okanagan Traditional Medicine Keeper from the
Penticton Indian Band, and Victor Antoine, an elder of the Okanagan
Indian Band. Each spirit icon was chosen carefully for its special
significance to the region, reflecting local Okanagan Nation tradition,
culture and knowledge.
The Mace also features a number of university symbols, including the
UBC Okanagan logo, the University coat of arms and the UBC motto
Tuum Est – It’s Yours. In addition, the back of the Mace displays the
word Suknaqinx, which is of the Nsyilxcen language, spoken by the
Okanagan’s original people. Roughly translated, it means “the ones who
stand on the hill and are seen and heard from far away.”
The University Mace, which was carved in the shape of a paddle,
representing the importance of Okanagan Lake to the region’s people, is
also inlayed with silver, applied by First Nations silversmith artist Justin
Terbasket of the Lower Similkameen Indian Band. The Mace was used
for the first time at the 2009 Convocation Ceremonies.
The Chancellor’s Okanagan Chair
In 2007, UBC’s Okanagan campus commissioned the creation of a
new Chancellor’s chair for use in Okanagan Convocation ceremonies.
Handcrafted by master furniture maker Dennis Weidman of Lake
Country, B.C., the chair was fashioned from cherry wood, a species
selected for its significance in the Okanagan’s long history as a fruit-
growing region.
The chair’s front panel features UBC’s motto, Tuum Est, the UBC
Okanagan logo laser engraved in the headrest panel, and UBC’s coat of
arms on each side panel.
O Canada
O Canada! Our home and native land,
True patriot love in all thy sons command.
With glowing hearts we see thee rise,
The true north strong and free!
From far and wide, O Canada,
We stand on guard for thee.
God keep our land glorious and free!
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee,
O Canada, we stand on guard for thee.

The Okanagan Song is based on a traditional song style called

collectively. Songs of this style can be sung by any Okanagan/

maintaining the formal rhythm and structure. This song has been called
the “Okanagan Song” or the “Okanagan Nation Anthem” because the
phrasing and meaning were constructed to celebrate pride in being

| Convocation 20108
1908• Provincial legislature passes a new “University Act”
establishing The University of British Columbia. It
provides for a Chancellor, a Convocation, a President,
and a Board of Governors to manage the university’s
administration, property and business affairs, and a
Senate to administer academic matters.
1910• After a province-wide survey, Point Grey is selected as
the site of UBC’s new campus.
1913• Dr. Frank Fairchild Wesbrook appointed first President
of UBC.
1915• The University of British Columbia opens in
temporary headquarters at the former MUCBC
facilities (nicknamed the “Fairview Shacks” after the
surrounding neighbourhood) adjacent to Vancouver
General Hospital. There are three faculties: Arts and
Science, Applied Science and Agriculture. Student
enrolment in September is 379 and total number of
full- and part-time faculty is 34.
1922• Tired of over-crowded conditions and inadequate
facilities, UBC students launch a campaign known as
“Build the University” to resume construction at the
Point Grey campus. With 56,000 names on a petition
for the government, 1,200 students with floats, bands
and banners march through the streets of downtown
Vancouver to the Point Grey campus. This pilgrimage
became known as the “Great Trek,” as it successfully
convinced the Government of B.C. to resume work on

a total of $262 million.
1993• U.S. President Bill Clinton and Russian President Boris
Yeltsin meet at UBC during the “Vancouver Summit.”
• Dr. Michael Smith receives the Nobel Prize.

Sustainabil ity Pledge
Imagine all UBC graduating students making a collective statement of
commitment to improving the sustainability of our communities.
UBC students have joined university and college graduates across North
America in a growing movement to redefine the purpose of education.
Students are committing to use their knowledge wisely to create
positive change in the world.
Through the UBC Sustainability Pledge, you have the opportunity to
commit to working toward a career and lifestyle with a conscience. The
Pledge also links you to resources that will help you incorporate social,
ecological, and economic aspects of sustainability into your professional
and personal life.
The Pledge is more than just a personal commitment. Our collective
voice sends a strong message to the university and the greater
community that UBC students care about sustainability.
Take a graduating step to creating a more sustainable society, sign now
at: www.sustain.ubc.ca/sustainable_u. This program was proposed
and is managed by students, and is supported by the Office of Student
Development and the Campus Sustainability Office.
“I pledge to explore and take into account the social and ecological consequences of my decisions. Furthermore, I pledge to use the knowledge I gain while at UBC to improve the sustainability of the communities in which I live, learn, and work.”

UBC – A Relationship for Life
Welcome, Class of 2010, to your new and honoured place in the UBC
community. Today we celebrate all you have worked for and achieved in
your time as a student; and the promise of your life as an alum.
Many students don’t realize that when you graduate from UBC, you
automatically become an alumna(f) or alumnus(m). You cross the stage
at convocation, the Chancellor admits you into UBC’s alumni body and
your relationship with the University enters a whole new phase. Now
you begin to see the true value of your degree(s). And you won’t have
to go far to find yourself in the company of amazing people—educators,
artists, doctors, nurses, business and community leaders—UBC grads
who will be your role models, mentors, colleagues and friends.
UBC acknowledges the value of all that our students have brought and
continue to bring to our community. You might be surprised at just who
your fellow alumni are, their levels of accomplishment, influence and
contribution. Brought together, we represent a significant and positive
force. Remember our motto Tuum Est – UBC is still yours. This place is as
much about you as it is about buildings and classes. So reach out. Stay in
touch. Ask for help when you need it—and lend a hand when you can.
Worldwide, there are about a quarter million UBC graduates. That’s
a powerful network and one that is totally open to you as you build
your career and your life. We’ll help you connect through the award-
winning Trek magazine, regular email newsletters, our websites and
social networks. You will receive a warm welcome at mentoring, social,
educational and career-building events, whether you stay here in the
Okanagan or go elsewhere. You can get involved with alumni groups as
far away as London and Seoul or as close as Kelowna and Calgary.
The door is always open. It’s only up to you to walk through.
Just remember that to keep you in the loop, we’ll need at least a current
email address. Please send yours to [email protected] or visit
www.ubc.ca/okanagan/alumnirelations for more information.
The Gift of Learning
Learning is a lifelong journey that transcends the classroom or the
lab. For some, the most powerful lessons gleaned from their time at
UBC’s Okanagan campus are about belonging and being a contributing
member of a community. That doesn’t end at graduation.
UBC’s Okanagan vision is to provide students, faculty, and staff with
an intimate learning environment in which innovation, technology, and
community play key roles in the pursuit of knowledge.
The realization of this vision would not be possible without the
generosity of alumni and friends of the University. Donations to UBC’s
Okanagan campus ensure that today’s students and tomorrow’s leaders
have the best education and research opportunities possible, creating a
vibrant and healthy future for us all.
To learn about the many ways you can invest in the next generation of
UBC students, please contact the Development Office at 250 807 8565
or visit our website at www.ubc.ca/okanagan/invest
Every gift matters.
Grad Class 2010 Gift
With a legacy gift symbolic of lifelong ties, the Class of 2010 has placed
a first commemorative stone tablet in the main courtyard walkway.
Year after year, new tablets will be placed as a lasting tribute to each
and every proud alumnus who once worked and played here.

Honorary Degree Recip ient
DR. SAMANTHA NUTT
Doctor of Laws, honoris causa
Dr. Samantha Nutt is the founder and executive director of the
humanitarian organization War Child Canada, and a medical doctor
specializing in maternal and child health in zones of armed conflict, family
medicine, public health, refugee health and women’s health.
Over the course of her professional career and through her work with
War Child Canada, Dr. Nutt has spearheaded efforts to provide direct
humanitarian support for the world’s war-affected children.
Her passion for advocacy emerged from her years living and working
in areas of conflict, such as Somalia, Liberia, Burundi and Iraq. Even as
a 24-year-old experiencing a war zone for the first time in Somalia, Dr.
Nutt realized the need for an organization that would advocate and
create change for children, and that could move beyond the normal
concept of charity.
S ignif icant Accomplishments & Contributions
Award For Teaching Excellence and Innovation
Prominent in the professions and the community, honorary degree recipients are recognized for their distinguished achievements in their respective
endeavours and for the contributions their accomplishments make to the life of the University and the betterment of society. These degrees will be
awarded during Spring Convocation.
DR. PATRICIA
LASSERRE
Dr. Patricia Lasserre
teaches computer
programming and
project management.
She has received two
Curricular Innovation
Awards from the
Irving K. Barber School of Arts and Sciences to develop novel ways to
teach computer science through team-based learning in the classroom.
Dr. Lasserre is noted for continuously striving to improve course offerings
through innovative approaches, always with a focus on student learning
and how to best design a challenging and rewarding experience for her
students. In addition, she employs teaching strategies that acknowledge
a wide range of learning styles. She takes teaching beyond the classroom
and is continuously demonstrating how and where the knowledge can be
applied.
DR. MICHAEL WOODWORTH
Noted for connecting his courses with leading-edge research and current
events, Dr. Michael Woodworth teaches courses in forensic psychology
and clinical psychology, in addition to specialized upper-level courses on
topics related to psychology and law, such as psychopathy, deception,
and the nature of evil.
Dr. Woodworth is often referred to as a mentor and is known for his
ongoing support and guidance of students. He actively works with and in
the community to create unique experiences for his undergraduate and
graduate students’ projects, and all of his current students are working
on projects with potential community impact. Dr. Woodworth has also
played an active role in developing courses and contributing to the newly
approved Forensic Specialization program.
By the time she was 28 she had
brought together the partners and
resources necessary to establish War
Child Canada. This organization has
effected change directly, immediately
and without compromise, providing
long-term programming for war-
affected children and their families,
and promoting greater awareness in
Canada concerning the rights of children
everywhere.
Dr. Nutt graduated Summa Cum Laude from McMaster University,
earned a Master of Science degree with distinction from London
University, and holds a Fellowship in Community Medicine from the
Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. She is on staff at
Sunnybrook and Women’s Health Science Centre and is an assistant
professor at the University of Toronto in the Department of Family and
Community Medicine.
