Dear Friends, One of the most beautiful movies that I’ve ever seen is The Last of the Mohicans. In its opening moments, three hunters, two Mohicans, Chingachgook and his son Uncas, and an adopted white man, Hawkeye, kneel before a slain great buck and speak to it, grieving the necessity of killing a brother that is so graceful and strong, and bidding that its spirit be taken by the Great Spirit to eternity. It’s a touching scene. These three humans have a deep sense of their connection with this animal. They are not separate from it. They share life with it and they must honor life. Lest we think that this sense was unique to North American Indians, check out these lines from Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the Sun: Be praised, my Lord, through all your creatures, especially through my lord Brother Sun…be praised through sister moon…our sister mother earth who feeds and rules us. Francis, though, didn’t make this up himself. He echoed a song in the Hebrew Scriptures. In the Book of Daniel, three young men condemned to die in a fiery furnace, praised the Lord… Bless the Lord all you works of the Lord, praise and exalt him above all forever. Angels of the Lord, bless the Lord…Sun and moon, bless the Lord…every shower and dew, bless the Lord…Let all the earth, bless the Lord…mountains and hills…everything growing from the earth, bless the Lord…you sons of men, bless the Lord! Jesus has a similar sense when he urges his disciples to trust in God’s care for them: Look at the birds in the sky; they neither sow nor reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them…Consider the lilies of the field, they do not work or spin, yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them. These passages, dating from the 2 nd century BC to the 12 th century AD, all show a profound feeling for the connection between human life and the rest of creation. Humanity is part of something greater than itself. We seem to have lost this sense of being part of something greater than ourselves. Since the 19 th century, we have built up a humanly made world that increasingly has isolated us from the natural world. Our cities, our housing, our means of transportation and communication are wonderful to behold. Yet, they also give us the false sense that we are in control and that we can bend nature to our needs. The irony is that contemporary science no longer accepts some of the assumptions that 19 th century science used to build that kind of human world. That older understanding saw the universe as like a machine: once started, it went on its own. Contemporary science instead sees the world more as a web of relationships in which what happens in one area has an effect in all the other areas. It’s this sense of interconnectedness that Pope Francis recognizes in the following passage from his encyclical, Laudato Si: The created things of this world are not free of ownership: 'For they are yours, O Lord, who love the living' (Wisdom 11:26). This is the basis for our conviction that, as part of the universe, called into being by one Father, all of us are linked by unseen bonds and together form a kind of universal family, a sublime communion which fills us with a sacred, affectionate and humble respect. Instead of science and religion being opposed to each other, they share a similar vision: we are linked. What we do has to affect everything else. There is an urgency to this and we need to pay attention, for our sake and for that of future generations! Love, Fr. Joe

Dear Friends,

One of the most beautiful movies that I’ve ever seen is The Last of the Mohicans.

Lest we think that this sense was unique to North American Indians, check out these lines from Francis of Assisi’s Canticle of the Sun:

Be praised, my Lord, through all your creatures, especially through my lord Brother Sun…be praised through sister moon…our sister mother earth who feeds and rules us.

Francis, though, didn’t make this up himself. He echoed a song in the Hebrew Scriptures. In the Book of Daniel, three young men condemned to die in a fiery furnace, praised the Lord…

Bless the Lord all you works of the Lord, praise and exalt him above all forever. Angels of the Lord, bless the Lord…Sun and moon, bless the Lord…every shower and dew, bless the Lord…Let all the earth, bless the Lord…mountains and hills…everything growing from the earth, bless the Lord…you sons of men, bless the Lord!

Jesus has a similar sense when he urges his disciples to trust in God’s care for them:

Look at the birds in the sky; they neither sow nor reap, they gather nothing into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them…Consider the lilies of the field, they do not work or

spin, yet I tell you that not even Solomon in all his splendor was clothed like one of them.

These passages, dating from the 2nd century BC to the 12th century AD, all show a profound feeling for the connection between human life and the rest of creation. Humanity is part of something greater than itself.

We seem to have lost this sense of being part of something greater than ourselves. Since the 19th century, we have built up a humanly made world that increasingly has isolated us from the natural world. Our cities, our housing, our means of transportation and communication are wonderful to behold. Yet, they also give us the false sense that we are in control and that we can bend nature to our needs.

The irony is that contemporary science no longer accepts some of the assumptions that 19th century science used to build that kind of human world. That older understanding saw the universe as like a machine: once started, it went on its own. Contemporary science instead sees the world more as a web of relationships in which what happens in one area has an effect in all the other areas.

It’s this sense of interconnectedness that Pope Francis recognizes in the following passage from his encyclical, Laudato Si:

The created things of this world are not free of ownership: 'For they are yours, O Lord, who love the living' (Wisdom 11:26).

Love,

Fr. Joe

MEDITATION The Indwelling Presence William Wordsworth

And I have felt A presence that disturbs me with the joy Of elevated thoughts; a sense sublime Of something far more deeply interfused, Whose dwelling is the light of setting suns, And the round ocean and the living air, And the blue sky, and in the mind of man; A motion and a spirit, that impels All thinking things, all objects of all thought, And rolls through all things. Therefore am I still A lover of the meadows and the woods, And mountains; and of all that we behold From this green earth; of all the mighty world.

STEWARDSHIP REFLECTIONS 33rd Sunday in Ordinary Time

“And then they will see the Son of Man

coming in the clouds with great power and

glory.” – Mark 13:26

We will all have that day when we are standing

before God and our life is played out like a movie.

When this happens and God asks each of us, “What

have you done with the gifts that I have given

you?” How will you respond?

The twenty-first century, while maintaining

systems of governance inherited from the

past, is witnessing a weakening of the power

of nation states, chiefly because the economic

and financial sectors, being transnational,

tend to prevail over the political.

Given this situation, it is essential to devise

stronger and more efficiently organized

international institutions….

Diplomacy also takes on a new importance in

the work of developing international

strategies which can anticipate serious

[environmental] problems affecting us all.

Pope Francis from his encyclical Laudato Si:

On Care for our Common Home

Word… St. Anne’s is a family of faith formed by the Word of God, especially as this is expressed in the person of Christ, in the

Scriptures, and in the Tradition of the Church. As we hear this word and take it more and more deeply into our lives, we

become ever more truly the People of God.

which along with other fees and donations, totaled $18,353.00. Our weekly expenses average out to $20,348.00.

Heating & Air Conditioning ~ Everyone knows that there are some months in which our electricity bill or heating bill is higher than others. Well, it’s the same with the Church. As you know, we use an additional way of paying for our extra energy months. In the back of the church each Sunday you will find separate ENERGY envelopes. If you should happen to hit the jackpot that week, and wish to throw a dollar or two in that envelope, we’d greatly appreciate it! You can throw these special envelopes right in the collection with your regular envelope. The energy envelopes will not be mailed to you. They will simply be in the back of the church, so if you don’t spot them, be sure to ask the ushers at your Mass. Thanks so much. And special thanks to those who have already been doing it regularly. It makes a difference!!!

Once you are taken to the new site, click on the section that says Create New Account. Next you will see New User Account Registration. Fill out the form and click “submit.”

When you are enrolled, you can go into Manage My Account, where you will see My Payment Methods. Here you can choose to have the funds deducted from your checking or bank account (you will need your routing and account numbers on hand). Under Manage My Account, you will also see Give a New Gift. There you will decide when and how much to give. (In the list, Offertory Collection means the Sunday collection.) You can select recurring or one time gifts. You also have the option to access all the other special envelopes you would normally find in your envelope packet and which are generally one-time donations.

Each time you go to Mass, get a card that says “I have made my donation online” and put it in the collection when the usher comes around. Thanks so much for giving online!
