From the Hines front

All the volunteers from Hines and the Abraham Lincoln Cemetery were honored at a luncheon at Elmcrest Banquets in Elmwood Park on April 24 th. A total of 1119 volunteers provided 152,588 hours of service. The value of each hour of service is $22.17. This equates to some $3,474,428.76 in services for our Veterans. We, are a very small part of the total effort. Our volunteers were credited as follows: Phyllis Beach – 23 years and 3,528 hours of service, Mary Donat -14 years and 1,883 hours, Ophie Hendle 16 years and 1,945 hours, Dolores Ligmanowski - 3,677 hours over her 24 years of service, John Modugne - 5 years and 1415 hours, Carol Lappa and Beryl McKillop were in-between awards this year. The luncheon was a pajama party so many of those who attended dressed for the occasion.

Our volunteers continue working though the summer months and fill in for those who are on vacations.

We are very grateful to Kathy Kulka. At the Post Volunteers dinner, a 50/50 raffle was held. One half equaled $110.00 which was donated to us for Hines supplies by the house and Kathy Kulka who won the raffle donated her winnings to us for use at hines as well. We Thank you Kathy and promise to put it to good use.

Our Unit made a donation to Fisher House in memory of our Gold Star Member, Mary D’Alessandro who passed away on April 29 th. Mary was 93 years young and had been an Auxiliary member for over 60 years.

The Commander’s Page

Finally it's getting warmer and people are looking to spend more time outside. By the time you receive this, Memorial Day has come and gone. The Chicago and Franklin Park events are only the beginning. We have a lot of events happening at the Post so, if you can, stop in and see what's changed and what is new. I hope to see you soon, which would be before the picnic at the end of summer. Have fun and be safe.

Ken Bishop - Post Commander

Sick and Distressed

Dottie Bourgart had surgery and follow-up tests and the news was good, she is all clear.

Our new member, Carla Orchard, had knee surgery and now is undergoing physical therapy. Her mother, Carol Lappa, after elbow surgery is keeping her company while they both do physical therapy.

John McKillop had a brief stay at the hospital and under went a lot of tests. Were happy to report he is our and about and looking good.

There are also those who are on our list and have been for quite a while. Keep them in your prayers…. They include Terry Crowe, Adele Kasch, Don Ronesch, Bon Beach, Richard Weslowski, and Ron Joseph.

Late news: Bernice Talbot passed away May 20th. Please keep her family in your prayers.

Auxiliary Membership

At our regular meeting Wednesday May 8th, we held two beautiful ceremonies. First, our Chaplin, Dottie Bourgart held a memorial service for the deceased members of our unit for this year. Those we lost were Jane Sullivan, Eva Wilk, Sharon Rozak, Patricia Kieras and Mary D’Alessandro. It was a lovely ceremony honoring each of these five ladies who will be missed.

Preserving your History

John Maloney has made an appeal for members to share with him their experiences so that we have these stories to use to personally eulogize our valued members. He is reminding us to take the time to share our experiences and create a personal history.

Our own National Historian and Post historian Bart Halleman along with Kendal Bishop and Paul Laws have joined the National movement to preserve these experiences by offering to interview and via video preserve your story. Not just while serving in the Military but as a Legionnaire.

Please contact one of us and take the time to help preserve this valued history. No one man can tell your story better than you. With permission, these tapes will be sent to the National archives, kept to share your story, and be given if desired to your loved ones. Without your help this valued part of history will be lost forever.

Bar Update!

By the time this guide reaches your homes, Our beer garden will again be open. Heads up! With this being said your bar and building management will not tolerate anyone that uses this area as a garbage dump. The flower pots are not ash trays or garbage cans. Management worked long and hard to obtain a permit and proper licenses to make this happen. It is yours to enjoy and not for you to destroy! Anyone caught not following this simple rule will be fined $5.00 That money will be given directly to Ms. Dolores Ligmanowski for the Hines program.

Video Games.

Our video games are doing well…. ENJOY! Just one request, please do not cuss out loud at your machine. Lets keep them happy so maybe, just maybe, they will be kind to us.

When I leave, I hold my breath, get in my car, lock the doors, role up the windows and Boy, thank God you cant hear me…. Then Im ready to go back into the bar, have a crown on the rocks and go back to the battle at the games. I may even win my money back.

All jokes aside, lets use common sense and have fun with our new machines, even invite a friend or two to join you.Tony SicilianoBuilding and Bar Manager

A Special Personal Note from Tony Siciliano

As some of your know, the loss of a mother is most devastating. Mary B D’Alessandro 93 years 7 months. A good long life some say. Think, it’s only a moment. After 70 years for me and 58 years for my brother Mike, the good Lord said “Guys, I want her now!” My brother and I looked at each other, without a word spoken. We became orphans, in only a moment in time. Where was yesterday? We are here today. When is tomorrow? It’s only a moment in time.

To you my #974 family, I thank our Auxiliary for a beautiful service. I thank our S.A.L. for their support and my legion brothers and Sisters, Thank You all for caring. Your wonderful words, cards, friendship and love. another moment in time! God Bless you.
