WHAT’S IN YOUR HEART?

A Prayer for Independence Day

Eternal God, stir our minds and stimulate our hearts with patriotism on this Fourth of July. May all that this day symbolizes renew our faith in freedom, our devotion to democracy, and redouble our efforts to keep a government of the people, by the people, and for the people truly alive in our world. Grant that we may highly resolve on this great day to dedicate ourselves anew to the task of ushering in an era when good will shall live in the hearts of a free people, justice shall be the light to guide their feet, and peace shall be the goal of humankind. Amen.

Elijah’s summoning of Elijah comes in the midst of everyday activities: Elisha is plowing. Where do you hear God’s call in your daily work?

Christ has set us free to serve others and live by the Spirit, Paul says. Do you experience your ministry more as service or, at times, a form of “slavery”? What can you do to “free” yourself to do your best and most satisfying work?

In the gospel today, Jesus begins his journey to Jerusalem. With the church, you, too, are on the road with Jesus. Consider how your life has been a pilgrimage—where it’s been, is now, and is going. What has been your road? What are you following? 1883-2019

FROM THE PASTOR

My Dear Parish Family, Later this week our country will celebrate Independence Day with picnics and fireworks, laughter and parades. And hopefully, too a prayer of thanksgiving for living in a land that treasures the gift of life, defends its freedoms with responsibility, and supports its citizens in their pursuit of living their lives according to their dreams and call. Our freedom is essential to the definition of America. I share with you these thoughts on this gift in and for our country:

Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high Where knowledge is free

Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls

Where words come out from the depth of truth Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection

Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way Into the dreary desert sand of dead habit

Where the mind is led forward by thee Into ever-widening thought and action

Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.

May God bless us all and keep us safe in His care. Father Scott

ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL NEEDS HELP The 2019 Annual Catholic Appeal is experiencing a very challenging year thus far. Contributions are down 20% across the Diocese. The Appeal is the source of support for all our diocesan works and ministries. Please take a moment to consider how you can help if you have not done so already. Your participation is essential if we want to continue our ministries as we have done. Thank you for your consideration.

ST. JOSEPH’S PAGE FOUR

We hope everyone has a safe and happy 4th of July.

Blessed is the nation whose God is the Lord. PSALMS 33:12.

Eternal God, stir our minds and stimulate our hearts with a high sense of patriotism on this Fourth of July. May all that this day symbolizes renew our faith in freedom, our devotion to democracy, and redouble our efforts to keep a government of the people, by the people, and for the people truly alive in our world. Grant that we may highly resolve on this great day to dedicate ourselves anew to the task of

ushering in an era when good will shall live in the hearts of a free people, justice

shall be the light to guide their feet, and peace shall be the goal of humankind: to the glory of your holy name and the good of our Nation and of all mankind.

Amen. If you have not received an email or text from us through “Flock Note” please send your cell phone number or email address to Nancy at [email protected].

Does God Care What I Wear To Church? Activities and vacations can make getting to Mass each week seem like a juggling act. Harder still is finding the time to dress properly and prepare as we would like. But approaching all aspects of the Eucharist carefully can deepen our Communion with Christ. What we wear can help. Here are a few thoughts: Make it feel special. If you were invited to a

friend’s house for an evening, wouldn’t you wear something appropriate and nice? Sunday Mass is a special time for you and God. Wearing good clothes makes it feel special.

Send a message. Mass is also a communal celebration. When you look nice in church, you send a message to your Catholic brothers and sisters that you value your time together in God’s house. Just because it’s “in style” doesn’t make it “in style” for God.

Use this guideline. When deciding what to wear in Church, think about this: If it’s something you would wear to a picnic, to play a sport, or to clean out the garage or the house, don’t wear it to church – even when on vacation.

PLEASE NOTE SUMMER PARISH OFFICE HOURS… During the months of July & August,

the Parish Office hours on Fridays are 8:30am-12:30pm.

cuidado. Pa S Sh
