Leda achieves another milestone. The company is 20 years old this month and we can proudly look back at the company’s spectacular growth and achievements.

Leda Security Products Pty Ltd was incorporated in November 1994 to purchase a small engineering company “Securapost” who had developed and patented a remarkable “locking and removable bollard”.

From a single product the “Securapost” bollard range has grown to over 500 models with Leda establishing itself as the industry market leader in “architectural and security bollards”.

With over 300,000 successful bollards installed Leda’s high security bollards provide phys-ical security at the majority of Australia’s high profile and iconic sites as well as protecting a wide range of government and defence infrastructure.

Over the years Leda has diversified into other areas and products that include

Securapost® - Architectural and Security Bollards

Securabike® - Bicycle Parking Products and End of Journey Facilities for Cyclists

Securagate® - Industrial Gates, Vehicle Access Control Products, Perimeter Security Products

Securadoor - Industrial Doors, Loading Dock Products

Space Saving Double Story Bike Racks

As Australia follows trends to design and install larger bicycle parking facilities to cater for the growing number of cyclists riding, the space requirements for parking the bicycles can become a major factor.

Leda have pioneered the development of double story bike racks in Australia and offer a number of various models and options. These include “manually operated”, through to gas strut power assist models.

As with all our “Securabike” products Leda provides full installation services by experienced Leda staff and ongoing “Securacare” PMC programs to maintain and service these products.

The Brisbane BMW Ride for Life Challenge 2014 and Securabike

This fully supported ride included full police escort, a rest stop with refreshment, route marshals course cycle guides, first aid, mechanical support and support vehicles.

Corporate groups, local teams and individuals attended this social event.

The Ride for Life Challenge ambassador is Robbie McEwen. Robbie is an Australian former professional road bicycle racer and a triple winner of the Tour de France’s green jersey sprinters’ classification. At his peak he was considered one of the fastest sprinters in the world. Attending and riding in the event on a non-competitive ride around Brisbane and the surrounds with the participants. Asking Robbie on how the day went he replied “great turnout and perfect conditions for the event and all involved”.

The Ride for Life Challenge is not just a cycling challenge but also raises much needed funds for local charities.

Leda manufactured and supplied the portable bike rails for the event which assisted in the parking of participants bicycles throughout the day.

The Block

Anyone who recently watched the latest TV series of “The Block” on channel 9 would be familiar with the conversion of this Melbourne warehouse in Prahran.

“The Block Glasshouse” by reports was a very succesful series. When it came to installing bicycle parking for the building the obvious choice were Leda “Securabike” bike rails. In this instance our SBR00B stainless rails were selected and installed to compliment the project.

Fast Food Outlets Catering for Cyclists

Provision for cyclists at fast food outlets across Australia has been growing momentum for some time.

While the majority of patrons still arrive at these types of premises (by motor vehicle) it is encouraging to see many chains catering for cyclists with the installation of bike racks.

In this instance at a Perth McDonalds a Leda CBR6 (catering for six bicycles) has thoughtfully been installed adjacent the entrance where the bikes are highly visible and less likely to be tampered with or stolen.

Masters Home Improvement

Masters Home Improvement is very close to opening their first store in Adelaide South Australia. Construction Engineering have just completed the build and handover for this impressive store located at Adelaide Airport near the giant Ikea warehouse.

Besides Masters Adelaide, Construction Engineering recently completed building the Masters Ballarat store. Construction Manager Steve Emonson says “the Adelaide program went extremely well again, and are looking forward to their ongoing relationship with Masters and subcontractor partners such as Leda Security Products”.

Leda Security Products continues to supply the new Masters Home Improvement stores with the full range of fixed and removable bollards for each store façade, building perimeter and car parks as well as bicycle racks if specified. Leda also supply our specified high cycle industrial boom gates for the entrances to each Masters Trade Centre.

There are more Masters stores being built in Adelaide and Leda look forward to supplying our specified Leda prod-ucts to each new store.

Lane Cove Plaza

Lane Cove Council have recently completed a revamp of the shopping and mall precinct at Lane Cove Shopping Centre.

Both entrances of the mall have had Leda SSP150RA stainless steel locking and removable bollards installed.

The locking and removable bollards are designed to prevent unauthorised vehicle access however council staff can quickly remove them when their own vehicles require access to the mall.

Bollard Testing of PAS68 Bollards

These high security PPT telescope bollards are currently undergoing testing before heading off for installation at one of Sydney’s iconic sites.

Six of the hydraulically operated units are required. They have s “PAS68” certification of V7500(NZ) 64/90:0.5/6.1. Put simply this certification confirms the bollards have been successfully tested with a 7.5t vehicle travelling at 64km/hr. The test was carried out at 90 degree angle to the bollard with the vehicle penetrated past the bollard by only 500mm. Debris from the impact was thrown up to 6.1 metres.

Apart from their high impact rating these SPTT bollards were specified for their shallow depth footing being telescopic they require a much shal-lower footing than single stroke alternative retractable bollards.

Invisible Gates

The New Farm Riverwalk is one of Brisbane City Council’s key river connections between New Farm and the Brisbane city centre. The walkway was first constructed in 2003 and was used by over 3,000 cyclists, pedestri-ans and runners daily.

The January 2011 floods caused extensive damage to the original structure, causing a section of it to break and wash away down-stream. The Federal and State governments have committed funding to the New Farm Riverwalk replacement. The total expected cost is approximately $72 million.

Incorporated into the Riverwalk are rotating opening spans that allow vessels to travel to and from their moorings. Four Leda swing gates close the pedestrian and cycle paths during the span opening.

The Leda gates have been completly man-ufactured with grade 316 stainless steel materials and are camouflaged to blend in with dividing walls of the Riverwalk when not activated.

Coffs Harbour Justice Precinct

Leda have just finished installing a 6mt track gate and 6mt dual swing gates for Richard Crooks Construction in Coffs Harbour. The gates were installed at the new police station and court house called the “Justice Precinct”.

Our project manager Gary Hicks received very positive feedback from the site regarding the quality of the gates and how smooth they operated.

“See if you can spot the gates in this photograph.”

Gates Just Keep Getting Longer

This 16mt long track gate was recently installed in Woden ACT for Westfields by Leda’s tech-nical staff.

The installation was required to upgrade the security of the main loading dock area. The install however was made more difficult due to the docks needed to remain in operation.

Leda also provided project and traffic man-agement while the project was being under-taken. According to Leda staff involved in the project “bad weather and freezing condition didn’t help matters either”.

RioTinto

Leda WA have been engaged to overhaul a number of mobile boom gate trailers from WA largest autonomous mine site in Southern Hemisphere located near Mount Brockman in North West Western Australia.

The existing boom gate system was only capable of 50+ operations per day and with 100+ operations autonomy.

There were a number of issues RioTinto previously have experienced was that each time the trailers were set up in the location they required vehicle control. Their technicians had realign the pe-beams and continually maintain the red dirt on the lens of the beam as it was causing faults.

Leda rectified this by using an ultrasonic beam that is blind to dust particles and heavy rain with a preset range of 6.0m. An added bonus was the units holds it memory during power down and power up procedures, set once only!

Leda’s high capacity solar panel and high German quality deep cycle batteries set up provide 300+ operations per 24 hour period and 900+ operations autonomy.

All units have been fitted with remote transmitters for access control and have a range of up to 100m+.

A Large Shelter Door

Earlier this year Leda installed two large high speed shutter doors for Schenker Australia in their bonded stores area.

These large fabric doors are 7 metres high and 6 metres wide and weigh approximately 600kgs. Installation of the doors was made more difficult due to the height and weight of the doors and required the use of both cranes and forklifts. There were also many restricting issues in using the various lifting equipment, as the building had low ceiling making for a very tight installation.

It took a number of attempts to complete the installation with our team in Tuggerah having to manufacture a special cradle to help lift the doors in place.

Scissor Lift for Hotel

Anyone who has tried to move or pick up a full beer keg quickly realises how heavy they are.

This job was recently made a lot easier with the installation of a Leda designed scissor lift at the Coogee Bay Palace Hotel.

The 1200mm high lift required for the hotel loading bay posed no problems for Leda’s engineering staff.

An urgent installation was accomplished by Leda’s Sydney team during recent renovations of the hotel.

Panel Lift Doors

Leda recently completed installing a series of engineered panel lift doors for EDI Downer at the “Ulan West Coal Mine” in the Hunter Valley.

The newly designed and purpose built coal crusher unit required three specialised panel lift doors for the reduc-tion of noise and vibration at the coal crusher facility.

Leda staff worked in conjunction with EDI Downer engi-neers to design a suitable solution to overcome the low height and structural clearance issues.

The project required a 7000mm width door with a clear opening lift of 1150mm for the coal crusher unit to be hori-zontally slipped. The maintenance doors provided a clear opening of 3120 x 2100mm high for complete access.

Leda also Project Managed the installation for a timely install.

Hydroswing Restaurant Door

Our hydroswing (hydraulically oper-ated) doors continue to find diverse and interesting applications.

In this restaurant application the whole side of the building can be quickly opened at the flick of a button.

These new hydraulically operated doors have created enormous interest from architects across the country since their release earlier this year.

Cantilevered Bicycle Shelters

Leda have recently added a new modular bicycle shelter range.

The cantilvered shelters are available in either single or double sided models. They provide excellent protection for cyclists bikes from the elements, and are an important tool in encouraging cycling.

New Bicycle Hub

The Bicycle Hub is the latest in community cycling support. Securabike has taken the bicycle repair station and added a number of common cycling requirements to create a go to point for local cyclists to pump tyres, grab a spare tube, fill up a water bottle, look at a map or make some minor adjustments to a bicycle. It is a comprehensive support point for cyclists any time of the day or night as lighting is included.

Being nice and high it is a great visual advertisement

for cyclists to use.

Standard features:

2 x sets of tools

2 x air pumps

2 x fresh water taps

1 x tube vending machine

4 x static maps or video screen area.

1 x Remote power outlets

Glen Waverley Railway Station

Michael Gidley (local member for Glen Waverley) offi-cially opened the train station and interchange on Saturday 25th of October.

Attending the opening were representatives from VicTrack, State Government, and Icon Building.

Michael Gidley spoke (before officially opening the station) about the “Station Precinct Enhancement Program” which uses railway property assets to fund station upgrades.

The new train station upgrades hopes to provide a relax-ing and safer environment for railway patrons to shop and commute.

As part of the theme, Leda was contracted to manufac-ture and install a significant amount of our “Redfern” style fencing

Once installed, designers printed images on each of the Redfern pickets and depending on which direction you are walking from determines the image that you will see

Aoife Kearly, (Project Manager, Development) from VicTrack, commented:

“The fence design was a perfect canvas for the art work and also was significant in masking the railway tracks behind it. This is something really unique and we are very delighted about the outcome. It has really added the final touch to what we wanted to achieve for this project”.

Future projects including Syndal, Hampton and Alphington stations are currently at various stages which Leda hopes to be involved with.

Experience Counts

Selecting the appropriate bollard and installing them correctly is imperative in any bollard application.

Leda’s Queensland staff recently came across this badly installed bollard that appar-ently has been ripped out three times in the past four months by vehicular impact.

A flexible Leda bollard would have been a much better choice and a properly engi-neered concrete footing would have saved this builder a lot of headaches and expense.

When you have been the market leader in bollards for over 20 years, you gain the-experience required to ensure your clients get the appropriate product.

New Securacare Brochure

Maintaining and servicing our automated equipment has always been a high priority for Leda which is why we offer three levels of “Securacare” service options to our clients.

Our “Securacare” programs have recently been revamped however still main-tain our

The Benefits of Cast in Place Dock Levellers and Installation Overview

What is a Pour In Place Dock Leveller?

Leda’s cast in place dock levelers are provided with anchors and metal sheet siding to facilitate the con-crete floor being poured around the dock leveler. The dock leveller is set into a foundation cut out, levelled and anchored in place, prior to the pouring of the concrete floor. When the concrete floor is poured the dock leveller is securely encased and installed. Field welding and shimming are eliminated. All the required welds are completed at the factory prior to shipment. The “cast in dock leveller” alleviates the need to pre-form the dock leveller pit prior to dock leveller instal-lation saving the builder substantial form work costs

Cast In Place Dock Levellers Save Money?

Leda’s “cast in place” dock levellers save money by dramatically reducing the cost of installation. The costs associated with forming dock leveller pits, stripping and cleaning the formed pits and perform-ing installation welds are all reduced. Concerns with forming the pit to the correct size, for pit style dock leveller are eliminated. The pit created by a pour in place dock leveller is a perfect fit.

How are Cast In Place Dock Levellers Installed?

There are two common installation methods Method 1 is the most common:

A. Provide cut out in the foundation wall to accommodate the dock leveller.

B. Pour a concrete pad to support the dock leveller and the loads that will be applied to the dock leveller.

C. Level the dock leveller to the finished floor heightof the build-ing. Make sure the front face of the dock leveller is square with the building foundation. Anchor the dock leveller using the anchor brackets attached to the dock leveller. Pour the concrete to the finished floor height in one pour.

Method 2

A. Provide cut out in the foundation wall to accommodate the dock leveller.

B. Set the dock leveller approximately 150mm above the fill underneath using shims. Level the dock leveller at what will be the finished floor height of the building. Make sure the front face of the dock leveller is square with the building foundation.

C. Two concrete pours will take place. The first pour gets con-crete underneath the dock leveller and part way up the sides. Once the first pour is complete and has cured, the dock leveller is now securely located and the second pour can take place. The second pour completes the installation to the finished floor.

As we alluded to earlier in this newsletter Leda is 20 years old. It’s hard to believe how quickly this time has passed. When I look back on what has been accomplished I am extremely proud of Leda’s achievements. Starting in bollards Leda have developed four distinct product brands that now make up our comprehensive range.

Securapost® - Architectural and Security BollardsSecurabike® - Bicycle Parking Products and End of Jour- ney Facilities for CyclistsSecuragate® - Industrial Gates, Vehicle Access Control Products, Perimeter Security ProductsSecuradoor® - Industrial Doors, Loading Dock Products

Developing this comprehensive range of diverse products was achieved through a commitment to designing and engi-neering high quality market leading products by a number of extremely motivated and talented Leda staff.

We started with a single product and now have in excess of one thousand products in the Leda portfolio across our four divisions.

While I definitely will not be at the helm for the next 20 years I leave the companies future development in very good hands with a highly effective and motivated management team.
