The West Nipissing Chamber of Commerce held its an-nual golf tournament on Friday, August 29th, one week later than initially planned. The tournament was origi-nally to be held on August 22nd at the Laurentide Golf Club in Sturgeon Falls, but was held over because golf club owner Moe Mantha Sr. experienced a heart attack just prior to the planned date and had to be admitted to hospital.
Although the tournament did lose a few teams with the last minute altered date, everyone was glad to see Man-tha Sr. in fine form on tournament date. “It was a great relief for us to see him hanging out by the barbecue, and I think I speak for everyone that we fully understand and appreciate that health always comes first,” said one of the organizing committee members, Isabel Mosseler. The other golf tournament committee members were Nicole Tanguay, Kathleen Thorne, chair Pat Keough, and chamber staff Mike Bozzer and Jolene Lisk.
One of the bonuses of the delay was a great day in terms of weather. It didn’t rain. Fifty-five players en-joyed the 18 holes of Four Man Best Ball. The team of Discount Hand Car Wash, consisting of Cory Lafond, Glen Greenough, Jacques Dupuis and Shawn David-son, won the top prize with a score of 61, 9 under par. The prize was awarded by Marc Serré of Eastlink, the main sponsor for the day.
Longest Drive among the
men was won by Jaime Burk of the Eastlink team, while Longest Drive among the women was shot by Kathleen Thorne, of the combined Chamber and Curling Club team. Bernard Lafontaine of the Caisse Populaire Stur-geon Falls team got the Closest to the Pin for the men, and Heather Bozzer of Team Timmins was Closest to the Pin for the women.
There was a moment of high drama when Jessie Longlade’s ball hit the pin on the Blue Sky Insurance Hole-In-One. “I didn’t even know at the time that it was the Hole-In-One,” he said. His near-shot, however, did not make history, and he agreed that close only counts in horseshoes. The proceeds for the 50/50 draw went to the Save The Ice campaign being run by the Sturgeon Falls Curling Club.
The winning team at this year’s West Nipissing Chamber of Commerce Golf Tournament was the Discount Hand Car Wash team, with the trophy presented by major sponsor, Eastlink. L to R: Jacques Dupuis, Shawn Davidson, Eastlink manager Marc Serré, Cory Lafond and Glen Greenough.
Delayed golf tourney turns out great
termine if his story was ac-curate. While on scene, an-other male showed up, also identifying himself as a ten-ant, telling the officer that the first male was in fact his roommate. Officers entered the residence and observed suspected cocaine in plain view. The second male was subsequently arrested for Possession of a Controlled
Substance and upon search-ing him, officers found more suspected cocaine in his pants pocket. The 21-year old male was later released on a Promise to Appear.
On August 26th, the WNPS received a call from a camp owner located on Hwy 575, stating that some-one broke into his camp and shed and stole some alcohol and power tools. Upon ar-
rival, police were told that the owner had last attended the camp around 20 days earlier. Officers were given a list of the stolen items, which included a cordless Dewalt drill, Dewalt impact drill, Mastercraft skill saw, a saws-all and a Husky air nailer kit. There are no sus-pects at this time but police are still investigating.
On August 26th, a fraud
complaint was received from a Sturgeon Falls resi-dent, stating that she had not received her Trillium cheque and when she called about it, they told her the cheque had already been cashed. Police investigated and received information about a possible suspect. This suspect was confirmed by the business where the cheque was cashed. A-21
year old female was arrested for one count of Theft Un-der $5000 and one count of Fraud Under $5000. She was released on a Promise To Appear.
A 34-year old male has been charged with Criminal Harassment after a com-plaint was received from a Cache Bay resident. On Aug. 26, the female complainant attended police headquar-ters and reported that she was being sent text messag-es and was being followed by a male who was known to her. The officer was told of
numerous occasions when the suspect had been told to stop communicating with the complainant. The sus-pect had also been warned by officers in the past. The accused was located and charged with one count of Criminal Harassment and later released on a Promise To Appear.
Anyone with information about these or other crimes is urged to contact either the West Nipissing Police Service at 705-753-1234 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
