HORNELL, N.Y. Karyl S.Doster, 80, formerly of 191 Hor-nell St., passed away Tuesday(Aug. 31, 2010) at St. JamesMercy Hospital.Born in North Hornell, May 13,1930, the daughter of Karl andJulia (Kaiser) Schreck, she hadresided in Hornell all of her life.Karyl was a graduate of the Hor-nell High School, class of 1948and worked as a telephone op-erator for Bell Telephone, retir-ing in 1986. She was an activemember of the former St. PaulsChurch in Hornell and a current

member of the Almond Unionof Churches.She was predeceased by herhusband, Donald A. Doster inMay, and two sisters, Judith Bar-nett in 2006 and Adeline Lempin 2009.She is survived by one sister,Lorna (Donald) Brink of Almond;and s everal nieces andnephews.To send a remembrance pleasevisit www.brownandpowersfu-

Canisteo, N.Y. The sun seton the life of 104 year-old EdithBrook of 5075 State Route 248,Canisteo, on Thursday (Sept. 9,2010) at Hornell Gardens. Her

death followed a few years ofdeclining health.Born March 31, 1906 in Tioga,Pa., she was the daughter ofGeorge and Nora Gee. Shespent her early childhood in theTroupsburg/Greenwood area,moving to Almond at the age of16.Edith was pre-deceased by threewonderful husbands, Carl B.Mack, Henry Christiansen andEdward M. Brook.She and Carl were married in1924 and lived most of their lifein Hornell with their only child,

Beth. Carl died in 1946, the re-sult of a Loon Lake drowningaccident.Edith had worked hard from theage of three-years but nowworked harder than ever to sup-port her daughter and herhome. That wasnt easy in 1946when working moms were fewand far between.Twenty-one years after Carlsdeath she met a tall, handsomeDane by the name of Henry

Christiansen. They married in1967 and lived in Bath, Savonaand Almond. With this marriageEdith acquired two much lovedstep-daughters, Dorothy Ryan

of Bath and Esther Dresser ofLodi. Henry died in 1977. Edithmoved back to Hornell and be-came active in the senior citizenprograms. She met the pianoman, Edward Brook, at one ofthe Masonic Temple Seniordinners.Edie and Ed married in 1984and lived in Canisteo. Ed em-braced, as only Ed could, Edieslarge extended family. He lovedthem all and especially great-granddaughter, Katharine San-ford, who grew up to play thepiano just like her Grandpa Ed.Ed died in 2000.

Edith worked for many years inHornells glove factory and vari-ous silk mills and in later life sheworked as a meat wrapper atthe Dansville and later Bath IGAstores.Edie was not only ambitious butalso imaginative. In the mid1950s she drew up plans for herdream home and had it built onthe Webbs Crossing Road, Hor-nell. Shortly after moving in shewas laid off from her job. Whatto do? Well, Edie turned her en-tire huge back yard into a cu-cumber field and spent that first

summer supporting herself bymaking, canning and selling herfamous 15-day and garlic-dillpickles.She loved hunting, preparingand stocking her freezer withvenison, woodchuck, pheasant,partridge, rabbit, squirrel andmore. She also had a passion forfishing. She owned a pistol andlifting up large rocks and shoot-ing snakes was her target prac-tice.Edie had many dear lifelongfriends who preceeded her indeath and fondly rememberedeach and every one of them.

She loved telling of their adven-tures together especially howthey lived during the Great De-pression.Surviving is her daughter, BethMoore of Canisteo; grand-daughters, Lisa (Terry) Sanfordof Canisteo, Jodi-Lynn Stephensalso of Canisteo and MarciaStephens of Syracuse. She isalso survived by one much lovedgreat-grandchild, Katharine E.Sanford of Canisteo andRochester.Surviving from her marriage to

Henry Christiansen are daughter, Dorothy Ryan of her two children, Vernon A(Joan Blakely) of NaplesMarsha Lindsey of Tenne

step-grandchildren, Angel klin and Dawn Meyer of Heidi Allison McAvoy oLouis, Mo. and several grandchildren and great-gchildren, as well as step-dater, Esther Dresser of Lodher children, Kenny, MarkDavid, Gary, Susie, CindyCarol.
