    A Simple Substrate Heater Device With Temperature Controller forThin Film Preparation

    ABSTRACTA simple substrate heater and its temperature controller were designed and built in order to prepare thin films in a highvacuum deposition system. The substrate heater was elaborated with a glass-ceramic body and a molybdenum foilheater. The applied power and the temperature are regulated by a power controller board using a microcontrollerprogrammed with a proportional-integrative-derivative algorithm. The heater/controller system was tested in a highvacuum deposition system and the results of its characterization at 100, 200, 300 and 400 C are presented. Avariation in temperature better than 0.5 C was obtained for all the tested temperatures. An application of thesubstrate heater is demonstrated by evaporating gold thin films on heated glass substrates.

    RESUMENSe presenta el diseo y la fabricacin de un calentador de sustratos con control de temperatura para prepararpelculas delgadas en un sistema de depsito de alto vaco. El calentador de sustratos fue elaborado usandovitrocermica y una lmina de molibdeno como elemento calefactor. La energa aplicada y la temperatura delcalentador de sustrato son controladas a travs de una tarjeta controladora de potencia usando un microcontroladorprogramado con un algoritmo basado en un sistema de control proporcional-integral-derivativo. El sistemacalentador/controlador propuesto fue evaluado a las temperaturas de 100, 200, 300 y 400 C. El sistema proporcionauna regulacin de temperatura menor a 0.5 C para todas las temperaturas evaluadas. La aplicabilidad delcalentador de sustratos se demostr depositando pelculas delgadas de oro sobre sustratos de vidrio calentados.

    1. Introduction

    The properties of thin films grown by thermaldeposition under high vacuum conditions dependon the temperature of the substrate, among otherparameters. During growth, the vacuum evaporatedmaterial condenses on the substrate, and thefurther nucleation and growth of the formed filmdepends on the impinged energy at arrival and onthe energy obtained from the substrate. Atommobility produced by high temperatures, promotes

    a better crystalline structure and large grain sizes inpolycrystalline materials [1].

    High vacuum conditions and high temperaturesduring growth reduce the selection of the type ofmaterial to be used as substrate heater [2].Contaminants can be introduced in the vacuum

    chamber by desorption and by the low vaporpressure of used materials. Besides, hightemperatures can soften materials, changing thegeometry of the components. Commerciallyavailable substrate heaters overcome theselimitations at a high cost, including features such aslarge substrate diameter, substrate rotation, dualcooling/heating or designs which are inert tooxygen or corrosive atmospheres [3-6]. Depending

    on the applications, those features might berequired; however, they are not included in thepresent design.

    The automatic control of the temperature of asubstrate heater is a requirement in order to obtaindesirable physical properties of thin films. In this

    work, the design and implementation of a simpleand low cost substrate heater and its temperaturecontroller is presented. An application of thesubstrate heater is demonstrated by the depositionof gold thin films onto glass substrates in a high

    vacuum thermal evaporation system.

    2. Experimental

    2.1 Substrate heater

    The design of the substrate heater was based onthe idea that simplicity produces robust designs.Low power was also a requirement in order to avoida substantial increment of temperature in thevacuum chamber during the thermal evaporation ofthe thin films. The chosen materials for thesubstrate heater were based mainly on their high

    vacuum properties and machinability, such thatthey can be manufactured with standard machinesand tools.

    The main part of the substrate heater (Fig. 1) wasentirely made of Macor [7], a glass-ceramic andmachinable material with excellent thermalcharacteristics: it can be continuously used at 800C with a peak temperature of 1000 C. Its thermalexpansion coefficient matches most metals,

    exhibits negligible porosity and possesses lowmechanical deformation. The high dimensionalstability of Macor at high temperatures and lowoutgassing rates makes it a useful material for highand ultrahigh vacuum applications. The substrate to

    be heated is mounted in direct contact to a circularcopper block with a diameter of 17.5 mm made ofoxygen free-copper, purity 99.99%. A threaded capmade also of Macor is fixed to the substrate heaterby pressing the substrate to the copper block. Athermocouple is inserted from one side of thethreaded cap into a small cavity in the copper blockin order to monitor the temperature as close aspossible to the substrate. This configurationprovides thermal contact and temperaturehomogenization due to the high thermalconductivity of the copper.

    The heating element was implemented with highpurity molybdenum (99.95%) foil in order to heatthe copper block. A rectangular 0.051 mm-thick Mofoil of 6.5 x 41.5 mm2 was used and assembled asshown in Fig. 1. Two electrodes made of stainlesssteel press and support the substrate heater indirect contact with the Mo heating element. Theassembly, inside the vacuum chamber, is shown inFig. 2. This design makes the substrate holder easyto install and to replace.

    2.2 Temperature controller

    The control and stability of temperature during filmgrowth is also a requirement for film reproducibility.In order to regulate the temperature of thesubstrate heater, a temperature controller wasdeveloped. The controller device contains amicrocontroller that regulates the power output of a

    200 W electric transformer. The microcontrollerreads the value of the setpoint (target temperature)from an adjustable rotary knob, and the substrateheater temperature from a K-type thermocouple. Aproportional-integral-derivative (PID) algorithmregulates the power output of the electrictransformer and thus, the temperature of thesubstrate heater [8].

    The electronic circuit of the controller is shown inFig. 3. The secondary winding of the transformer(bottom of Fig. 3) provides a low voltage and highcurrent output which is directly connected to theheating element. The primary coil of the

    transformer is connected to the 127 VAC line andis driven by a snubberless triac. The electricalpower applied to the heating element is controlledby registering the time when the alternating voltagecrosses the zero voltage point and waiting for acertain time, calculated by the PID algorithm, toactivate the triac into a high conduction state. This

    allows flowing current to the primary coil of thetransformer from the activation time of the triacuntil the next zero crossing of the AC line voltage.In this way, a short delay-time generates a highpower output and a large delay-time generates asmall power output. The maximum time foractivating the triac needs to be the time of half-cycle of the AC line which is ~8.3 ms, in order to

    capture the next zero crossing of the power lineand start the cycle again.

    The microcontroller device used for the control ofthe temperature is the ATtiny13 from Atmel Corp.Two 10-bit analog-digital converter (ADC) lines(into the device) were used to read the setpointand the output signal from the thermocoupleconditioner (AD597 from Analog Devices Inc.). Thedifference between the setpoint and thethermocouple voltage produces the error valueused in the PID algorithm. Due to the digital natureof the microcontroller and the 10 bits of the analogto digital converter, the error signal (between 0 and

    5 volts) is converted to an integer value betweenzero and 1023. For registering the zero crossing ofthe AC line, the output of the rectified 12 VACtransformer (Fig. 2) is limited at 5 V peak to peakby a variable resistor. This signal is connected to adigital input of the microcontroller which generatesan interrupt in the software when the logic signal

    changes from 0 to 1 value. The digital pulse outputsignal from the microcontroller is used to drive aphoto-triac (MOC3052 from Fairchild Semi.) whichin turn drives the snubberless power triac (BTA10from ST micro.). This configuration provides opticalinsulation between the low-voltage microcontrollerand the high-voltage AC signal.

    The control of the temperature of the substrateheater is performed, as mentioned before, bycalculating an error signal coming from thedifference between the setpoint and the output ofthe thermocouple signal. The lapsed time (delay-time, DT) in activating the triac to a highconduction state, after the zero crossing of thevoltage, is calculated incorporating the PIDequation according to

    In this equation,MP is the maximum powerconstant implemented as a 10-bit integer between

    zero and 1023,pK , iK and dK are the proportional,

    integral and derivative calibration parameters, e isthe error-voltage or difference between the setpoint(SP) and the thermocouple voltage or process value(PV) and TDC is a constant to convert the integervalue between 0 and 1023 to time between 0 and 8.3ms. Although this equation can be readilyimplemented in the algorithm, in order to promote

    stability in the derivative term, a change of variable isused. We changed the error variable in the derivativeterm by the process value by noticing that

    integral term was limited in order to avoid thewindup of this term [8].

    The algorithm, shown as a flow diagram in Fig. 4,consists of an infinite loop that is waiting for aninterruption. When an interruption happens, indicating

    a zero crossing of the AC line, the program activatesthe triac device at the specified amount ofDT. Every1200 interrupts (ten seconds) the programrecalculates a new DT value. The software wasdeveloped entirely in the C programming languageusing the AVR-GCC compiler. Source code of theprogram is available upon request.

    2.3 System calibration

    The voltage output from the AD597 thermocoupleconditioning integrated circuit was divided by thefactor 0.10V/C in order to get the readings in C.This initial temperature value was shifted to thecalibrated value by comparing its value to themeasurement of a high accuracy and resolutionHH42 thermistor thermometer from OmegaEngineering in thermal equilibrium at roomtemperature. We note that unavoidabletemperature gradients are going to be presentbetween the thermocouple and the temperature atthe surface of the substrate. For a precise surfacetemperature measurement, it is recommended touse a high precision calibrated infraredthermometer.

    The temperature controller was programmed withan arbitrary initial value for the proportional term (

    pK ), and zero both for integrative ( iK ) and

    derivative ( dK ) terms. The initial temperature to

    be controlled was 100 C and the plot oftemperature vs. time was evaluated until asatisfactory value of the proportional term with asubstrate temperature within 10 % of the setpointtemperature was obtained. Both, the setpoint andthe process temperature, were monitored usingtwo analog inputs of a National Instruments PCI-6023E card.

    The initial parameters of the integrative term wereset inspired in the Ziegler-Nichols method adaptedto the integer arithmetic used in the software of themicrocontroller [9]. The final integrative term was

    set by observing the behavior of the oscillationsaround the target value until their amplitudesdecrease with time and a low overshoot wasobtained. Finally, the derivative term was includedand the parameters were refined based on thesystem behavior until a stable temperature withminimum oscillations was obtained.

    2.4 Thin film deposition

    The applicability of the substrate heater in thin filmprocessing was demonstrated by thermallyevaporating gold thin films. Corning 2749 glass

    was used as substrate. Before deposition, theglass substrates were cleaned with non-abrasivesoap, chemically etched for 30 minutes in aH2O2:H2SO4 (1:3 ratio) solution, rinsed with distilledwater, and finally, cleaned with methanol in anultrasonic bath. The vacuum chamber wasevacuated to pressure of ~5 x 10-5 Torr and a 2nm-adhesive layer of chromium was evaporated.

    The gold thin films were deposited by maintainingthe glass substrate temperature at 300 2 C andevaporating metallic gold (99.99% purity) on themuntil thicknesses of 25, 50 and 75 nm wereachieved with ~1.5 /s as a rate deposition. Thinfilm thickness was monitored using a quartz crystalmonitor from Sigma Instruments (SQM-242). As areference, a gold film of 50 nm was grown on aglass substrate at room temperature (25 C). Thesurface morphology of the films was analyzedusing an atomic force microscope (AFM/STM

    Ambios Universal). The surface roughness wasestimated from the Ambios-software and the grainsize from the AFM images [10].

    3. Results and discussion

    The temperature controller was tested at 100,200, 300 and 400 C. A plot of the controlledtemperature vs. time is shown in Fig. 5a and itscorresponding current and voltage rms-valuesapplied to the heating element is shown in Fig.5b. As can be observed, the controlledtemperatures present small oscillations aroundthe setpoint until a stable temperature isreached. The standard deviation of thetemperature around each setpoint, after 15minutes of operation, was 0.20, 0.27, 0.29 and0.31 C for 100, 200, 300 and 400 C,

    respectively. This indicates a variation in thecontrol of the temperature better than 0.4 % overthe range of temperature analyzed.

    The AFM images of the gold films prepared underhigh vacuum conditions with different thicknessesand substrate temperatures are shown in Fig. 6.Results of the analysis of the gold films are shown inTable 1. The surface roughness increases with

    thickness at 300 C of the substrate temperaturewhile the grain size remains constant at 150 nm for25 and 50 nm of film thickness. For thickness of 75nm, the grain size increased to 175 nm. Differencesof films grown onsubstrates at room temperature (25C) and heated at 300 C can be observed bycomparingthe rms- roughness and the grain size. Anincrement of 22% in roughness and a decrement of28% in grain size were found for the film deposited atroom temperature, in comparison with the film grownat 300 C. Besides, the effect of the substratetemperature during growth is to increase the grainsize, as confirmed with AFM images B and C in

    Figure 6. These results are consistent with theexpected benefits of the substrate temperature effectover the characteristics of thin films.

    4. Conclusions

    The substrate temperature plays an important roleon the physical properties during thin filmspreparation. Its precise control can help to

    understand the existent relation between the filmsgrowth parameters and their properties. Heatingthe substrate in a controlled way is a techniqueused for growing thin films with variable grain sizesand surface morphology. The substrate heater andthe temperature controller discussed herepresented high stability with temperature variationsminor than 0.4% when were heatedin the rangebetween 100 C and 400 C.

    The proposed design provides simple and low costdevices useful for thin film deposition. The mainestimated costs being the time to machine the

    substrate heater made of Macor and the time todevelop the software. However, as mentionedbefore, the software can be obtained from theauthors at no cost.

    The temperature controller and substrate heatersystem was used for growing gold thin films. It wasshown that at high substrate temperatures, suchas 300 C, the gold films exhibit larger grain sizeand lower surface roughness than gold films grownon substrates without heating.
