DJ has always been attracted to the arts and received her BA degree from UMass/Boston with a major in English. She mostly taught herself to paint, relying on many art books and spending a lot of time practicing to improve her skills over the years. She started with watercolor and gouache and then started using pastels and prefers them for her animal portraits. In 2005/'06 she spent a year painting oils exclusively to improve her skills in this medium. She then began painting with acrylics and enjoys the fast drying medium.

Her favorite subjects to paint are nature and landscapes but she has also added still lifes of fruits and vegetables to her favorite subjects. In particular, she enjoys painting animals and finds a way to include them in most of her landscape paintings. DJ also takes commissions for animal portraits. You can see samples of her work at www.animalportraitsbydonna.com.

Through the years DJ has written many stories and in 2014 she self-published her first chapter book for tweens. She is the author of five books: "The House at the Top of the Trees" (for Tweens), "Eddie Easel and the Case of the Missing Green" (for Children), "Mouse Bound" (for Children/Tweens), "The Miracle Dog" (non-fiction), and a collection of literary short stories "Seven-Storied Houses" that was published in 2018.

DIFFERENT ROOTS, COMMON DREAMS New Hampshire’s Cultural Diversity

Becky Field, Concord NH

Photographer www.DifferentRootsNH.com

Project Summary

This photography project started because of an act of hate. In 2011 and 2012, malicious, racist graffiti

was scrawled on the sides of four refugee homes in Concord, NH - homes of families that had fled violence

to seek a safe community here. Photographer Becky Field decided then to use her camera to show the

diversity of our newcomers, to honor their contributions, and to encourage public awareness of cultural

diversity.

New Hampshire’s population is predominantly white,1 so few have experienced the rich cultural, ethnic

and religious diversity in the Granite State. Becky’s work celebrates the contributions to our communities

from new Americans, and shows that, while we may be different in many ways, we have similar dreams

for safe homes, jobs to support our families, strong futures for our children, and freedom to practice our

cultural and religious traditions.

The project has been honored by the New Hampshire State Council on the Arts, the Bhutanese Community

of New Hampshire, and the Turkish Cultural Center of New Hampshire. In 2018 she was named the “Most

Fascinating Artist” by Concord Community TV.

Becky has shared her work through numerous talks and exhibits on diversity and immigration. A book of

her photographs has been published, Different Roots, Common Dreams: New Hampshire's Cultural

Diversity, (Peter E. Randall Publisher, 2015) which includes an introduction by former New Hampshire

Governor Maggie Hassan, a foreword by John Isaac, former Chief of the United Nation’s Photo Unit, and

stories by NH immigrants. The book has won two national awards.

In 2017, Becky partnered with the NH Charitable Foundation to start the Different Roots, Common Dreams

Scholarship Fund to help refugees and other immigrants complete a four-year undergraduate degree. For

more information, visit http://differentrootsnh.com/scholarship-fund/.

Becky holds a Certificate in Photography from the NH Institute of Art, and has studied photography

throughout the Northeast. In past work she was a research ecologist and university professor. She holds

masters and doctoral degrees in wildlife ecology.
