2020 Term 2 - Week 9Artworks by 3/4 Jasmine

The students of 3/4 Jasmine have been working hard producing beautiful artworks in class. Well done 3/4 Jasmine on your wonderful artistic efforts.

Write4Fun 2020 Schools Writing Competition - 6 CassiaIn term 1 our class, 6 Cassia, participated in the “Write4Fun” writing competition. We could write a short story or a poem on any topic of our choice, with a maximum of 500 words. We enjoyed our time creating our amazing stories. We were engaged by the amazing prizes that were on offer such as an Xbox, Nintendo and cash prizes of up to $1000.

Our wonderful teacher Mrs Carroll gave us plenty of time to finish our writing in class and once we were done we submitted them online.

Some of us were fortunate enough to get a letter saying that we passed the first round of judging but we all had fun writing our texts in the end. In conclusion, the annual “Write4fun” writing competition is a great experience and is recommended to students who love writing and being creative.

Principal’s ReportDear Parents and Carers

It has been another busy two weeks as we move into the end of term!

The students have been full steam ahead with their learning across all areas. From talking to the students, it is clear that they are enjoying being back with their friends and learning in the classroom.

I have had pleasure of sharing in some of the great work students have been engaging in. Over the fortnight students from 4/5 Wisteria; Sioban, Zunairah, Sharika and Olanna, have shared their persuasive writing. Quality arguments and the use of high modality words were great features I enjoyed. More writing was shared by students in 1 Jacaranda; Tanzila, Jiya and Rafan and from 2 Cotton by Ahnaf. The choice of words in their texts were fabulous, such as ‘glum’ and ‘downhearted’. The language they used really ‘painted a picture in my mind’ for me as the reader. Finally, I enjoyed the colour and beauty of some pencil drawings of flowers by Mariam and Mieka in 3/4 Jasmine.

Last week the NSW Government and in turn, the Department of Education, informed schools of the easing of some restrictions. Others have been reviewed and some existing restrictions remain in place. I thank you for your continued support with ensuring we are adhering to the guidelines and maintaining the safety of all.

Principal’s Report ContinuedImportant to note at this time, procedures for morning drop off and afternoon pick up remain the same, including the staggered finish times. Please continue to observe social distancing during afternoon pick up times and to depart promptly. Both carpark gates remain available as additional departure points to support families leaving the school grounds smoothly.

Term 3 guidelines • Parents, carers and community should continue to not be on school grounds. Please ring ahead to the office if you do need to be on site, so arrangements can be made. • School assemblies are able to go ahead and are limited to 15 minutes. Awards and other special recognitions will be handed out in class with photographs being shared via Seesaw.• Parent/teacher meetings where possible need to be either online, telephone or after 3.10pm.• School extracurricular activities, such as choir and dance, and interschool events such as debating and public speaking, will recommence. • Scripture classes will resume.

I will continue to keep you informed as things change.

Education Week – Learning TogetherEducation Week 2020 is still going ahead. It will though, look very different for all schools due to the social distancing guidelines in place on school grounds. We are looking at many different ways to celebrate the achievements of our students and community as a whole and the learning we have and will continue to do together. Watch this space for more information about our celebrations!

Important Information – Opportunity Class for 2021 Entry (Repeated Information)The placement process for opportunity class entry in 2021, including the Opportunity Class Placement Test, has been delayed due to the impact of COVID-19.

Due to the shorter time frame, changes have been made to the placement process for opportunity classes that will apply for 2020 applicants only. These include:• A new date for online applications. Parents must apply between Tuesday 9 June 2020 and Friday 26 June 2020. Late applications cannot be accepted.• A new test date - Wednesday 16 September 2020.• Offers will be made to successful students overnight on 1 December 2020.

Annual ReportOur 2019 report has been published via our Macquarie Fields Public School website. This reports on the school’s progress and achievements in relation to our Strategic Directions (2018-2020).

Safe driving in and around the school As you may be aware police have been monitoring Fields Road and the adherence of drivers to the road rules in our area. I strongly encourage you to follow road rules. Please see page 5 in this newsletter for more information regarding these rules in a school zone. Thank you for your safe driving, protecting the safety of our staff, students and families.

School emergency drillOn Tuesday 30 June during one of the student breaks, Macquarie Fields PS will be practising our evacuation from the playground drill. This is so students and teachers are familiar with the procedures in the event of an emergency occurring. Classes will be revising the procedures for emergencies in readiness for this drill. I ask for your support of these drills by talking about them with your child/ren. The evacuation sound, for students and teachers, is a series of short bells. It is important for the safety of every member of Macquarie Fields PS that these procedures are followed in a quiet, orderly and sensible manner. Thank you for your anticipated support.

Write4Fun 2020 Schools Writing Competition - 5 FigtreeAmeena - Being able to be part of a writing competition is very exciting. You have a chance to show off to everyone your writing and can win something. You can show writing talent. My talent is in writing poems. My writing was a poem about a worm called Ooey Gooey. I went past the first round and I feel very proud.

Matilda - During lockdown I was doing my school work when I remembered the Write4Fun competition that my teacher had told my class about. I had two minutes until my lunch break so I decided to write a poem. I wrote a made-up poem called “December”. I sent it to the competition and a few weeks later I received a letter saying that my poem made it past the first round of judging and is going to be published in a book called ‘The Inside Story’.

Macquarie Fields Public SchoolImportant Road Safety Reminder

This is another reminder to always follow both the road rules and parking rules when dropping off and picking up your child/children from school. We have recently had the Police/Council Rangers visit and they were impressed by most of the drivers that were dropping off and picking up students.

We have asked the Council Rangers and the Highway Patrol to increase their visits to our school as we are still very concerned for the safety and welfare of our students as some car drivers are not following basic road and parking rules outside our school and are breaking the law. We encourage parents to leave home 5 or 10 minutes earlier to avoid the busier times and also encourage parents to park near our school and walk in to drop off or collect their child/children. Please do not allow your child/children to get out of the car on the roundabout, or double-park and ask your child/children to get out of the car, even if the traffic is backed up. Do not park in the bus zone. If you drop off or pick up in the kiss and drop zone you are not allowed to get out of your car, only your child/children. It is illegal do a U-Turn outside of our school as there are solid lines marked on the road. Running late or being in a hurry is not a reason to risk the students of Macquarie Fields Public School’s safety or risk a fine.

Please see the fine information from Highway Patrol below.
