Dear St. Peter Families,

After a lengthy and enjoyable break from school, it was great to be back with the students this week. As we have en-

tered the Lenten Season, we have so many things happening at St. Peter. First, please note important information from

Mrs. Roth’s section regarding ACT Aspire testing dates in April. As I discussed at the Parents’ Club meeting, school

will feel very different on these mornings, and it is critical that we have all of our students in school that week. Also,

enrichment surveys are currently being completed in grades 5th - 7th. Please be sure to complete these surveys as we plan

for next year. Our 5th and 6th grade students will have an opportunity to choose their preferred enrichments before the

end of the school year.

There are a couple of important upcoming dates for our dads. We have a Dads’ Club meeting at the Abita Brewery Visi-

tor Center on Wednesday, March 22nd, at 7pm. Dr. Jeff Lacour will be sharing his testimony, discussing work as an op-

portunity for ministry, and describing his role as a father and spiritual leader in his family. On Sunday, March 19th, from

5pm-8pm, St. Peter Catholic Church will be hosting the Father-Son Program for fathers and 12-14 year old sons. Please

see the attached flyer for more information on this great opportunity to explore God’s gift of sexuality and His plan for

sons as they grow and mature into the men God created them to be.

We have a couple of facilities updates regarding the 4th and 5th grade building . To address the sometimes slippery out-

side surface, we have resurfaced the breezeway and stairs with a non-slip coating. We are also completing updates to the

restrooms in this building.

I want to thank everyone who was able to attend the Parents’ Club Meeting last night, especially given the bad

weather. Whether or not you were able to make it, we have lots of needs and ways to help our upcoming Party at the

Pavilion. Please read Mrs. Van Zandt’s page in the newsletter for important information.

Thank you for your love and support of St. Peter Catholic School. We are here if you need us.

Academic Accolades Suzanne Roth, Dean of Academics

Dear Parents,

During the week of April 3rd- 6th, our 3rd- 7th grade students will be taking the ACT Aspire standardized tests. The ACT

Aspire tests assess students in English, reading, writing, math and science using multiple question types including multi-

ple choice and constructed response. We know that our children will be well prepared for the various assessments be-

cause of their hard work throughout their years at St. Peter. This year, St. Peter School will participate in the paper and

pencil format of the assessment. Each assessment lasts 45- 55 minutes. There is really no way to “study” for this test be-

cause of its cumulative nature except to practice test taking strategies.

In an effort to give the students opportunities to practice the skills in each subject along with standardized test taking

strategies, we have invested in COACH ACT Aspire Practice Books which include two practice tests (similar to what

students will see on the ACT Aspire) in the areas of reading, English, writing, and math . Our 3rd- 7th grade students have

been working on the practice tests during the last few weeks. The teachers are using their curriculum, their current text-

books, and these practice tests as a way to teach students to read directions carefully; practice reading, understanding and

answering standardized test questions fully; and take tests in an allotted time period. Students will also be required to

write an essay based on a writing prompt which will be assessed using a given rubric. In the allotted time, students are to

utilize the steps of the writing process: pre-write, draft, revise, edit, and the final draft.

During the last two weeks in March, the students will take the 2nd practice tests in the books for each of the subject areas

in the allotted time to gain a better understanding of the testing procedures and time limits of the actual test. These prac-

tice books will be sent home for those families who may want to review the test directions, questions, correct answers,

and rubrics with their children at home.

It is very important that children are present each day of testing and arrive to school on time. Students will not be al-

lowed to enter their classroom once testing has begun. We also request that you refrain from scheduling any doctor ap-

pointment during the morning this week.

We will send home the ACT Aspire student reports as soon as possible. They are not due to be released until the late

summer. We know that our students and teachers have worked hard throughout the years to prepare for these tests.

Please pray with us that our students are able to shine and show all that they have learned!

If you have any questions about our standardized testing, please feel free to call or email me, [email protected].

Blessings,

Suzanne Roth
