The editors wish to thank the netherlands institute for advanced study in the humanities and social sciences (nias) for making possible the exploratory workshop ‘sidonius apollinaris for the 21st century’, held at wassenaar (netherlands) on 26-30 January 2011, which gave rise to this book. we also thank the dutch centre for patristic research (cpo: tilburg university, Vu university amsterdam, and leiden university) for assistance with the funding application and for including the newly born sidonius project in its research programme, and the board of edi-tors of the lahr series for adopting its publication.

we are grateful for the shrewd advice of the external reviewer which has helped to make this a better and more coherent book. The contribu-tions to this volume that were not originally written in english were translated by Gavin Kelly, who also took care of the linguistic accuracy of the other pieces by non-native speakers. Joop van waarden looked after the organization and prepared the manuscript. together, we acted as a sounding board for the authors. it is the authors we want to thank above all for their creativity and patience. without them, there would obviously have been no book at all.

abbreviations of ancient authors and texts follow the practice of the Oxford Latin Dictionary up to ca. 200 ce and thereafter those of the Thesaurus Linguae Latinae; authors and titles can also be found in full in the index locorum. For the poems included in sidonius’ letters, the numeration introduced by christiansen and holland in their Concordantia in Sidonii Apollinaris carmina (nos 25-41) is applied alongside the section numbers of the letters for greater ease of consultation.

The bibliography lists the vast majority of works cited in the text, with the exception of translations of authors other than sidonius, book reviews, dictionary entries, and a few works not on sidonius that are mentioned only once. it is divided into four sections: (1) a list of early French editions and translations in chronological order (this is tied to the account of French and Francophone sidonian scholarship in chapter 2); (2) modern editions, translations, and commentaries since 1887 (the date of the fundamental critical edition of luetjohann in Monumenta Germaniae Historica); (3) concordances and indexes; (4) monographs and articles. Journal titles are generally abbreviated according to the policy of L’Année Philologique. other abbreviations are unlikely to cause prob-lems, but for completeness’ sake, we list them here:
