Primetimers - SAVE THE DATES

February 18 - Saturday - Glendale Center Theater - Bye Bye Birdie. Bye Bye Birdie is one of the most captivating musical shows of our time. Cost of the theater ($24) and bus ($20) a total of $44/person. Meet the bus near the YAC at 1:45 PM. Sign up in the office or Fellowship Hall. Tickets are limited so sign up soon. Church and Society Movie Night On Monday, February 13 at 7:00 p.m. in the Kendall Building,

Church and Society will screen "4 Little Girls," a movie by Spike Lee.

This is the documentary about the bombing of an African American

church during the Civil Rights Movement. This film recounts the

people and events leading up to the one of the most despicable

hate-crimes during the height of the civil-rights movement, the

bombing of the 16th Street Church in Birmingham, Alabama. In that

attack, four little African-American girls lost their lives and a nation

was simultaneously revolted, angered and galvanized to push the

fight for equality and justice forward. This 1997 film won seven

awards including a Critics Choice Award and a NAACP Image Award.

It was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best

Documentary Feature. This movie runs 102 minutes.

WELCOME CENTER FOR REFUGEE CHILDREN

Shortly after its formation, NUMC's congregation was given an introduction to the efforts of our conference to address the crises arising from the arrival in the United States of thousands of unaccompanied minors (UM's) from the Central American countries of El Salvador, Guatemala, and Honduras. In an article in "The Methodist" Pastor Karen Murata wrote of the newly formed Welcome Center for Refugee Children located at North Hills UMC Mission: detailing its purpose and work. To recap, the North District's Center is one of three in The Los Angeles area, initiated in 2015 by the Conference bishop, "to be an extension of God's welcoming, healing embrace..." to these children, fleeing life threatening violence in their home countries. The centers are administered and coordinated by the Conference Compassion and Justice Ministries, led by Rev. David Farley. More than 3000 children have been placed in the Los Angeles area. More than 400 are in our communities of Mission Hills, North Hollywood, and Pacoima.

Because these young lives remain under constant threat, they are a subrosa presence. They and their whereabouts cannot be reveal to us. We have to locate them. During the past 18 months, an office has been in operation. The director, her assistant and two volunteers have made contact and registered 100 children, qualified for assistance in seeking refugee status.*

In 88% of the case, children with legal representation win refugee status. Without it, 80% of them are deported, where in too many cases, they are murdered by the gangs they were initially fleeing. Most of the legal representation have been pro-bono, obtained through agencies such as CARECEN, Esperanza and KIND. But they are currently maxed out. We now seek "low-bono" attorneys whose fees range from $2500 to $5000 per case. The center has been sustained by Conference funds and donations, and a couple of low- grade fund raisers. But now we need to raise funds to pay attorneys’ fees. We will be holding our first major fund drive on March 17th, 2017. A dinner at the Sportsmen's Lodge in Studio City, for which we will be selling tickets; an opportunity drawing and silent auction will be featured. In order to do this, we have become an independent non-profit organization.

We need the support of churches in the North District: ticket buyers, donations, volunteers and most of all, PRAYERS. A role for each and everyone. For additional information, please contact Gloria Myles, in person or by phone (818-366-3599).

*Under a law signed by President George W. Bush, they are to be granted asylum if they can show that they have legitimate fear for their lives.
