Shepherd’s Sharing Happy Easter: This feast is all about New Life.

Even the so-called “secular” trappings of the season carry the message. Baby chicks breaking through the shells of seemingly lifeless eggs, the fertility of rabbits, the blooming of flowers, the new clothes all speak to a new beginning, the start of something better than what has gone before. At the foundation of all these frivolities is the sublime reality of the Resurrection. Like the shell of an egg, the tomb is cracked open and New Life appears with a beauty far greater than lilies or new clothes; a life more abundant than any herd of rabbits could produce. But it is not just about witnessing the appearance of the new life and new beginnings in nature or even in the Resurrection of Jesus. We are not here merely to celebrate the fact that Jesus rose from the dead, that He who once was dead and buried has come back to life. It is not just a new beginning for the Prophet and Miracle-worker from Nazareth. Professing our belief in the Resurrection of Jesus is just the beginning. We are not called merely to act as witnesses or even publicists of some historical event. We are called to be participants in it. The whole point of the Resurrection was to give us a share in the New Life that Jesus experienced. Those who accept their participation in the Resurrection believe that they too, will rise again, that the death of their mortal bodies will lead to a new beginning of a life that is better than what has gone before. But the mystery of the Resurrection is so much more than the promise of eternal life after human death. Having a share in the New Life of Christ means recognizing that New Life in every moment of our current lives. The Life that Christ has won for us in His Resurrection is not sitting on a shelf waiting for us to die. We can claim it NOW. Here’s how.

Realize that life is filled with changes. Some appear to be changes for the better and some are changes for the worse. But every change is a kind of death. The way things were ceases to exist. It dies. Whether that change comes as welcome relief or as a painful shock, what once was, is no more. The whole foundation for the Easter event is the Paschal Mystery, that is, the Death and Resurrection of Christ. By making the Paschal Mystery the context for our whole lives we can view every one of the changes we encounter as an expression of not only the death of what has gone before, but also the resurrection of something better. It is easy to recognize events that appear as “changes for the better.” We are glad when a bad situation “dies.” Even if nothing takes its place, we’re just glad its over and gone. However, if it’s something that we’ve gotten used that is replaced by something that is just as good or even better, we still struggle to let go of the old and embrace the new. The real difficulty comes when something that we truly care about changes or even vanishes. The more we care, the harder it is to let go. It is especially difficult when we

cannot see an attractive new reality. Belief in the Paschal Mystery challenges us to trust that every “death” leads to a resurrection to a new and better reality; that every change is ultimately a change for the better. Admittedly, it may take a while for that “better” reality to emerge. Don’t forget that Jesus didn’t rise until the third day in the tomb and it took even longer for His followers to realize that He was back. It is during this “tomb time” that faith is essential. When we cannot see what lies ahead, all we have is the Paschal Mystery. Faith in that mystery assures us that after the “death” of the old way, and outside of the “tomb” of uncertainty, there is a new and more abundant life. When we truly embrace that mystery and the event we celebrate this weekend, then the ultimate mission of Jesus is fulfilled. For He Himself said, “I have come that they may have life and have it more abundantly.”

The Renew My Church process that we are currently engaged in along with Our Lady of Loretto, St. Catherine of Alexandria and St. Terrence parishes is a journey through the Paschal Mystery. There will be changes, the death of some familiar ways of doing things. There will also be “tomb time” while the “new reality” takes shape. But if Easter means anything, it means that we trust in God to roll away the stone and open up a new and more life-giving Church for us. Let us continue that journey together so that, in charity, we may support and strengthen each other in our faith and hope.

Happy, Happy to Fr. George: This Friday, April 6th is Fr. George Velloorattil’s sixty-sixth birthday (or as I might put it, the fiftieth anniversary of his sixteenth birthday). It is also the fortieth anniversary of his ordination to the priesthood. Next Sunday, April 8th a special celebration will take place recognizing these milestones beginning with Fr. George’s celebration of the 11:00 Mass. Congratulations, Happy Birthday, and Happy Anniversary, Fr. George.

NEED PRAYERS?

Do you know someone with, or recovering from a serious or chronic illness, someone facing surgery, someone who is grieving, someone who needs prayers to comfort and strengthen them? If you do, please consider giving that person a Prayer Shawl from St. Germaine. The recipients of the shawls are uplifted by the love and prayers that go into creating a Prayer Shawl. There is no cost for a shawl. All you have to do is arrange to pick it up at the Parish Center and deliver it to the person in need. Just give us the name of the person who will receive the Prayer Shawl so that we can add their name to our (unpublished) prayer list. To request a Prayer Shawl, please call 636-5060.

Donations are much appreciated. They enable us to

purchase the yarn needed to continue our mission.

ST. VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY & FOOD PAN-

TRY AT ST. GERMAINE

The St. Vincent De Paul Society at St. Germaine has been very busy. Each month we serve about 195 individuals/families. Most of our food pantry clients are working or receiving pensions. Some are homeless. With the end of the PADS season quickly approaching, the homeless will have no where to sleep which usually means we see more clients who are in need of food and bus money. At this time we can use food for the pantry, monetary donations and Gift cards are always welcome. These are a great way to allow the families to pur-chase milk, eggs, etc. These can be put in collection baskets or dropped off at the Parish Center. Thank you in advance for your generous support of our ministry. Call 636-5060 for more information or to be part of our ministry.
