Transcript Review: You can print an unofficial copy of your student’s transcript at my.iusd.org

(parent portal)

Get in the habit of checking the “graduation status” tab to see what high school graduation requirements remain.

Students should check their transcript each semester to make sure it is accurate!

Courses used to meet IUSD graduation requirements must be taken within IUSD (WHS / IUSD summer school / IUSD blended learning).

Courses used to meet college entrance requirements or for personal enrichment can be taken elsewhere (online, community colleges…) at the student/family discretion but the course and grade will not be placed on the WHS transcript.

Repeating Classes Review your child’s transcript on Parent Portal

Ds may need to be repeated for college eligibility

Fs may need to be repeated to meet high school graduation requirements

Discuss options for repeating courses with your counselor

Courses for which your child earns a grade of C or better should not be repeated; the higher grade won’t count!

Credit will not be issued twice for most repeated courses.

California Community CollegesThe Good News…

•California Community Colleges provide instruction to 2.6 million students per year. 25% of the nation’s community college population.

•112 community colleges, in 71 districts make the CCC system the largest system of higher education in the world.

• CCC train 70% of California’s nurses and 80% of the firefighters, police officers and emergency medical technicians.

• CCC transfer students comprise 28% of the UC graduates and 54% of the CSU graduates; 1/3 of 2018-2019 undergraduates at UCLA transferred from California community colleges.

The Not So Good News…• Of those who enter the CCC needing one level below college math, only 46.2% achieve that certificate, degree or transfer.• Over 70% enter the CCC under prepared to do college level work.

Page 18: 9th Grade Parent Workshopwhs.prod.iusd.org/sites/woodbridgehigh/files/... · Woodbridge Warriors Repeating Classes Review your child’s transcript on Parent Portal Ds may need to

All California high school seniors who fulfill the following three requirements will be entitled to a comprehensive review of their applications at each UC campus to which they apply. They must:

1. Complete 15 UC-required college-preparatory ("a-g") courses, with 11 of those done prior to the start of 12th grade

2. Maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better (weighted by honors/AP bonus points) in these courses

3. Take the ACT With Writing or SAT Reasoning Test with Writing

Students' qualifications will be assessed using campus-based review processes, which emphasize academic achievement but also account for

a wide range of personal accomplishments and educational contexts.

NOTE: Two SAT Subject Tests are not required for admission. However, students can still choose to submit their scores for consideration as part of their application, just as they do now with AP scores. The Subject Tests may also be recommended for certain majors.

Who receives guaranteed admission

to the University of California (ELC)? Within the pool of applicants, two categories of students will be

guaranteed admission somewhere in the UC system:

1. those who fall in the top 9 percent of all high school graduates statewide

2. those who rank in the top 9 percent of their own high school graduating class – WHS class of 2019 = 4.3 GPA

Because selectivity varies by campus due to the size and academic quality of applicant pools, a student's chance for admission will also vary by campus. For this reason, it is important for students to review all of their options and choose both carefully and broadly.

Students will be notified, directly on the online application, once they enter their academic profile, if they qualify in the top 9%

Paying for Higher Education: Financial Aid

“Financial aid is available to assist students and families in meeting the costs of a college education. If you need help paying for fees, books, and other expenses, you should apply for financial aid. - www.icanaffordcollege.com

Cost of Attendance minus (-) Expected Family Contribution = Financial Need

Information about your family’s financial situation gathered from FAFSA (Free

Application for Federal Student Aid) available in October of 12th grade will be used

to determine your family’s “expected contribution”. Colleges will create packages in

the form of a student aid report (SAR) to include applicable grants/ scholarships, work

study opportunities and loans which can be used to fill the “financial need” gap.

A word of advice from your WHS counselors:

$$$$$ It’s never too late to save for college…

WHS Counselors’ Unsolicited Advice:Include non scheduled time in your child’s day – they really do have a lot on their plates and need some time to relax.

Be thoughtful about the number of Honors or AP classes you allow your child to select. If your student is feeling overwhelmed, focus on subject areas where your child has an expressed interest.

Allow your child to try different things (clubs, classes, lessons, and activities). Through this exploration, they may find their college major, a career option, or at least some new friends.

Monitor grades through parent portal weekly. Checking daily may make both you and your child a little tense. Remember, only the final semester grade “counts”.

As hard as it may be sometimes…just listen. Allow natural consequences to teach.
