THANK YOU!

On behalf of Kadena High School’s Class of 2020, I would like to give my gratitude to many of the individuals and groups who have aided our class. I have had the pleasure

of leading the Kadena High School’s class of 2020 as their class president. I have attended Kadena for all four years of my high school career and have seen the change, inspiration, and hard work that has gone on at the school as well as the community. However, we would not be where we are today without the help of teachers and other adults who have helped us with this stage of our lives.

Mr. Kwiatek, our school principal, has been a tremendous help to our school, helping our student council receive the representation they needed, participating in many events throughout the school year, and keeping the students at Kadena on track and ready for their futures. Working alongside Mr. Kwiatek, there are many staff members and teachers who have helped our school. I would like to particularly thank the sponsors our class has had for Student Council our Junior and Senior year, Mrs. Faltz-Stanley, and Mr. Barker. Each of these educators have gone above and beyond to help our Junior and Senior class with everything they have needed.

Additionally, I would like to acknowledge KDAP and other working military personnel who have devoted so much of their time into keeping our school, community, and country safe. KDAP has done much for our high school: come to our aid when needed, helped us outside of school, and spoke to us in many briefings, assemblies, and ceremonies. For these tasks they have completed outside of their normal work day, we are extremely grateful. Other organizations have helped us throughout this school year including the Emery Lanes bowling alley, the 18th Wing and terminal personnel, and FSS who helped the seniors on our Senior Day.

Finally, there is much recognition to be given to our host nation who has kindly allowed us to enjoy this beautiful island. The kind people of Okinawa have shown us much hospitality and patience and have given us the ability to open our minds to new customs and a new culture. We are thankful for this opportunity to be overseas here in Okinawa, and we extend a heartfelt thanks to them and anyone not specifically mentioned, for so many have helped us along the way. There are many adults in the lives of us students who have reached out to help one way or another. There are not enough words to express our gratitude to all the adults that have inspired us. On behalf of Kadena High School’s Class of 2020, I want to simply say, “Thank You.”

ALWAYS A DRAGON

Leaving your family and home can be one of the most difficult challenges you can face. As someone who has been living in one place for 18 years, this becomes something I

have been excited yet fearing the most. My name is Marissa Corn and I am a senior at Kubasaki High School. Since the

beginning of my high school career I have always wanted to be involved with my school in any shape or form. With the many clubs and sports I joined one of the most important clubs I decided to join was student council and I have been a part of it ever since. Being able to be one of the voices of my class and to speak up for certain issues that my peers had, has been incredibly important throughout my high school career. With joining various clubs, it has helped me develop my social skills and create relationships with students and teachers in a way I could never forget.

Of course I never would have gotten to this point in my life if it wasn’t for the mentors that have helped shaped me to who I am today. School can be stressful sometimes, but the classes I remember always cheering me up are the ones that gave me a creative outlet. Seeing my choir teacher Erika Wootton smiling, dancing, singing and automatically lifting my mood up every day as I walk into the classroom or having Saleem Malik tell me and my best friend Brenna Edwards that our videos we had created were not even close to the theme that we had to follow but somehow captured the image that he had been looking for, has been one of the many highlights that I had been able to experience. My family has helped me in ways I cannot describe. They have all been with me through every failure and success. They taught me that no matter how many times I had thought that I could not achieve, that there was always a light at the end of the tunnel and that they would always be with me along the way.

Ever since I had stepped foot into high school, I thought of what every student had in mind. Graduation. The moment where we realize that we aren’t children anymore. Where we can’t hold our parents hand going to the doctors, where we can’t wonder what’s for dinner that night. The moment where we will miss walking through the hallways greeting our friends and teachers and where we meet up with our friends at our cars before school. The last moment where we realize that we are young adults going into the exciting, scary, and mysterious adventure called life.

As we go our separate ways, we have to always remember who we are. When we go off on our own adventures and meet new people along the way, we can’t lose ourselves by forgetting the morals we believe in. As Rascal Flatts’s song goes “My wish for you is that this life becomes all that you want it to. Your dreams stay big, your worries stay small and that you never need to carry more than you can hold.” Though we come from a small community of people, every single one of us has the potential to change the world. This class has gone through it all and there’s nothing that any one of us can’t handle. The new life that awaits us has no idea what is coming for them and as our popular saying goes, “Once a dragon, always a dragon.”
