The Swing era is alive and well here innorthern New Jersey thanks to James LDean and his Big Band. So if you want to

hear and maybe dance to what was the most

popular music in the United States from

around 1935 to 1946, head over to the

Louis Bay 2nd Library on Nov. 6.

At 7 pm, the Friends of the Louis Bay

2nd Library in Hawthorne will present a

concert by frontman James L. Dean (inset)

and his 15-piece Big Band.

In a salute to Veteran’s Day, the concert will be a red,

white and blue event. If you are not sure of the sound of

swing music, think of Glenn Miller’s In the Mood, recorded

in 1940, a popular tune that stormed the air waves and

permeated clubs and dance halls.

When the United States entered the war in 1941, swing

music went to war, too. The jazz-inspired music provided

comfort for families at home and soldiers and sailors

abroad. Many musicians were drafted into the

military and took their music with them. Some

of them led military jazz bands that traveled the

world to boost the morale of troops.

Dean, primarily a saxophonist, is also a

veteran, serving six years in US Navy bands.

He attended Berklee College of Music in

Boston and Mannes College in New York City.

His musical chops are varied as he has

performed on tenor, alto sax and clarinet with

diverse bands such as American jazz arranger

Sy Oliver and soul-jazz organist Jimmy McGriff.

In 1995, he formed his big band and has featured guest

artists such as Jerry Vale, Julie Budd and George Coleman,

among others. For the Hawthorne show, Dean and his band

perform swing-era favorites from Artie Shaw, Benny

Goodman, Count Basie, Duke Ellington and others. The

Library is at 345 Lafayette Ave, Hawthorne, and admission

is free. Go to hawthorne.bccls.org for more info.
