Always “Clean, Drain, Dry and Dispose” when using watercraft or water-related equipment. • Build no fires except in a designated firepit or use a camp stove. Before leaving make sure your fire is completely out. • Please! Do not litter. • Be sensitive to wildlife. Bears can be dangerous and should not be fed. Food must be stored away from your campsite, preferably in a locked vehicle, to avoid attracting hungry animals. Do not store food in your tent. • The use of insect repellent will add to your comfort. • Learn to recognize and avoid poisonous plants such as poison ivy. • In case of injury or illness contact a Campground Attendant or Park Patrol Officer. They can assist you to reach medical help. • Canoeists and hikers travelling in backcountry areas should advise a friend of their intended destination and anticipated length of trip. • Backcountry camping is only allowed at designated campsites. • It is illegal to use or transport elm firewood. • Moving firewood can spread harmful invasive species and destroy our forests. Protect Manitoba’s trees. Don’t move firewood. One of the most popular parks in Manitoba, there are always things to see and do at Birds Hill. The early 19th century brought the first settlers to the Red River area, including James Curtis Bird, the namesake of the park. Recognized for its natural features, the park was established in 1967 to commemorate Canada’s 100th birthday. Today, thousands of people come here to experience what a beautiful Manitoba summer has to offer – friends, fun and sun. This park’s rolling hills and deep ridges are all that remain of the glaciers that once covered this area. Despite being a mere 20 minutes away from Winnipeg, the aspen/oak parkland and native prairie is home to wildlife like deer, waterfowl and songbirds. The park is a mosaic of landscapes including esker ridges, dry prairie, wet meadows, bogs, and aspen-oak and mixed boreal forest communities. Visit the park interpreters to learn about prairie ecology, white-tailed deer or the old town of Pine Ridge. Go on a guided hike, share a campfire story or watch the amphitheatre shows. Bur Oak and Prairie Winds self-guiding trails feature informative signs so visitors can learn about the park as they explore. Paved and natural surface trails allow bicyclists, rollerbladers, hikers and cross-country skiers to weave their way through the park. Horse stables and equestrian facilities are available as well as pony and hay rides. For a good view of the park take a driving tour around the North and South Drives. Birds Hill campground offers 476 sites, with a choice of basic, electrical or full service camping. In addition to being a natural habitat for wildlife, Birds Hill is a natural gathering place for people. It is home to one of North America’s largest folk music events, the Winnipeg Folk Festival, as well as a range of other year-round recreational activities and sporting events. Triathlons, orienteering, and equestrian events can be seen at the park every summer. Groups also like to use the facilities for private gatherings like family reunions. More information on Birds Hill Campground and Birds Hill Provincial Park is available on request from the park office.
