A brief History
147 Educatorsfrom 4 schools in Districts Central and East in the Western Cape were inducted as part of the MeLDS programme.
Aim
• The aim of the personalised professional development plan was to improve the ICT/eLearning fluency of educators and for them to progress to higher tiers on the Western Cape Game Changer Plan.
• A carefully selected range of workshops and training, specifically based on the baseline assessment that educators have completed, were conducted over a period of 3 ̶ 4 months.
• Each workshop required participants to submit a portfolio task as evidence that the outcomes for that workshop were achieved. The trainer provided on-going support so that educators could successfully implement the skills they acquired.
• The overall aim if this development plan was to transform educators as illustrated on the next slide:

Diagnostic Assessment
The purpose of this assessment tool is to:
• determine the level of ICT/eLearning fluency of the educator
• plot their position on the Western Cape Game Changer tier
• to develop a Personalised Professional Development Plan suited to the individual educator’s needs.
• The purpose of the Professional Development plan is to improve the overall ICT/eLearning fluency and skills of the educators so that they may grow in their learning pathway and confidently teach the 21st
century learner.

Challenges
Workshop duration
• Most workshops are 3 hour workshops. With the schools coming out at 15h00, this posed a problem. Educators could not stay later than 17h00, therefore making it impossible to conduct 3 hour workshops.
• This problem was overcome by having educators do a portfolio assignment in their own time. This was monitored closely by an onsite trainer who gave constant support. Completed portfolio assignments are evidence of having completed a three hour training session.
Challenges and Highlights
Resources
• At the start of the programme, an audit of all ICT equipment (hardware and software) was conducted at each school. It was determined that schools had the resources but they were locked away. Some were not even aware they had them.
• Within the first 2 weeks of the programme, with the assistance of the officials from the two district offices, the equipment was installed and put to use. Central arranged for smart classroom training for the educators and principals as well.
Highlights
Collaboration between Macmillan and WCED
• The programme was supported by the Western Cape Department of Education. This meant that they endorsed the training programme and provided much needed technical support. The SES for eLearning at both districts were incredibly supported. Not only did they arrange a smart classroom training session for the schools, but also attended and participated in some of the workshops and WhatsApp support groups.
Highlights
Professional Development
• The educators were very positive and incredibly motivated. Many hands-on and practical sessions prepared them for skills acquisition and improving their confidence levels when it came to using the various ICT technologies in their planning and teaching. This also meant that educators earned the maximum PD points allowed by SACE per anum.

265 Foundation phase educators from 52 schools across all districts in the Eastern Cape were trained on the use of the lap top and more specifically, the integration of the laptop into their planning, teaching and learning.
Process• In 2018, Macmillan implemented the MeLDS programme in the Eastern
Cape. • Each of the 286 Foundation Phase educators participating in the
programme was trained on how to use the laptop they received from the Eastern Cape Department of Basic Education (ECDoE) as a tool for planning, creating resources and teaching.
• A two-day training session was conducted in 12 centres across the Eastern Cape.
• During these training sessions, educators were trained on how to integrate the use of their laptop in each of the three Foundation Phase subjects.
• They were taught basic skills including downloading videos, installing fonts, creating tables and inserting pictures.
• They were also shown how to create a PowerPoint presentation and a lesson, incorporating all the skills they had learnt.

During the second phase of the 2018
MeLDS programme, the trainers visited the
educators at their schools to reinforce
what they had learnt and to assess their
portfolio assignments.
It has been a very successful MeLDS year
as we watched the confidence levels of
educators grow from not being able to use
a laptop at all, to creating beautiful and
powerful lessons for their classes.
