Study ProgrammesOur courses teach young people to be ready for university or work when they finish at college. All full-time students aged 16–18 will follow a study programme or they will start work with an employer as an apprentice.
Full-time Study Programmes are delivered at the College and are made up of: Ò The main subject qualification (vocational or academic) Ò English and maths Ò Work experience
Each study programme leads on to the next level in the subject choice and to university, an apprenticeship or employment.
English and mathsHaving the right level of English and maths is crucial to ensure you successfully complete your course. If your maths and English skills are below the level they should be, it will stop you from achieving your full potential.
English and maths are essential for virtually every career and for university, apprenticeships and work. It’s important you work hard to achieve the best level possible.
Everyone continues to study English and maths until they are 18. If your GCSE grades are lower than 4/C then you will re-take GCSE or functional skills qualifications. If your grades are 4/C or above you will study English and maths masterclasses.
Work experience, trips and visitsAs a student at City College you will spend time on work experience and/or work focused activities to give you the hands on experience of the working world. We actively encourage our students to take part in Young Enterprise and other work based projects. Each year all of our subject areas host or take part in public displays, events and exhibitions. These include our annual awards night, industry week, art exhibition, fashion show and many more. Our students also take trips and visits to exhibitions, shows, attractions and have guest speakers that are relevant to their subject.
We regularly have students entering industry based competitions to showcase their skills and ability. We have some fantastic success in competitions showing the talent we have at City College.

Mayflower 4002020 marks the 400th anniversary of a historic voyage, when the Pilgrims set sail for America on the Mayflower. This was one of the most influential journeys in global history and a defining moment in the relationship between Britain, the USA and the Netherlands. During 2020 there will be major events in Southampton to commemorate the Mayflower sailing from the city and there will be special projects and activities at College, which you will be able to participate in and explore what happened in 1620 and why this journey is still relevant today.
