Pastor’s Column Pastor’s Column Pastor’s Column Christmas 2012 Dear Friends,
Christmas always makes me feel special. It’s a feeling that begins with those first displays of colored lights that seem to arrive earlier and earlier each year. I feel it when I
brave the crowds searching for the right gifts for friends and family, knowing they are out
there doing the same for me. I sense it in all the celebrations of Advent leading up to Christmas and with the crowds that gather for Mass on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day.
Christmas really is the most wonderful time of the year. Spiritually, Christmas has been described as a “thin place,” a place where earth and
heaven draw close. It is a place where God and people are closer than they are at any other time during the year until, at last, God bridges the gap in the birth of a child who is
Emmanuel, God with us, God one of us. This wonderful moment not only brings us joy; it also brings us a message to hear and a message to share: Peace on Earth. That’s what the
nearness of God is really all about. It’s about peace. This year I invite each member of our parish family to enter more deeply into the
mystery of God’s presence to us by living out the message of Peace on Earth. We live that message when we try to be more at peace with ourselves by becoming better people: the kind
of people God is calling us to be. We live the message of Peace in our families when we
strive to be more attentive and compassionate to those who are closest to us. Recent events have been poignant reminders of the need for peace in our world. When we hope and work
for peace, when we refuse to be among the voices calling for war and violence, we are expressing our faith in the promise of that first Christmas.
The world that Christ was born into was a world not unlike our own. It was a world of people, families, and nations that had plenty of problems with peace. But the message of
the angel, the message of Peace on Earth, was not a fairy tale message for make believe people. It is a real message of hope for our world and it is just as powerful today as it was
2000 years ago. Christmas is a special place, a thin place, where God is very close to us. May the
nearness of God bring you peace and may you be one of the first to bring that gift to others.
Sincerely yours in Christ,
Fr. Mike Vetrano

Divorce and Remarriage: Where Do I Stand with the Church? Beginning Again... This evening will be given by Fr. Mike Vetrano. He is our pastor and also an advocate at the tribunal in our diocese. Advocates help those seeking annulments to bring their case before the tribunal in a pastorally sensitive and compassionate manner. This evening is geared for those who wonder about where they or a friend or a family member stand with the church and will explain the various options open to those who were married in the church and now wish to begin a new relationship with the full blessing of the church.
Monday February 4th at 7:30 PM Why Catholics Like Einstein and Need not be Afraid of Darwin
The supposed conflict between science and religion is a staple of modern discourse. But does this conflict really exist? We shall take a look at Darwin's theory of evolution and the question of human origins; modern cosmology; the Galileo affair (which history books still treat as the definitive parting of ways between science and religion); and suggest ways of reading the creation account in the Book of Genesis. The talk will take a cue from the 17th century philosopher Francis Bacon: A little science can lead us away from God, while a fuller understanding of it leads us back again.

OUR LADY OF THE HAMPTONS The administration, faculty and student community of Our lady of the Hamptons Regional Catholic School offers Christmas greetings and sincere prayers of gratitude to all the parishioners who are so supportive of our Catholic school! We are proud to be a vibrant and strong presence for Catholic education on the East End!
The anticipated opening of the gymnasium space of the new Wellness center at OLH is scheduled for the first of the New Year. This project has been a lengthy project during which the encouragement and financial support of the community has been evident. The school is still seeking funding in order to complete the classroom section of the facility, in the hope that those rooms can be used in September 2013.
Registration for the 2-13-2014 school year will begin immediately after the Christmas holidays. Parents who may be interested in considering pre-school at St. Rosalie’s campus, or kindergarten through grade 8 at the Southampton campus are urged to request information packets as soon as possible. Tours and interviews will be scheduled for January.
We invite parishioners and friends to learn more about Our Lady of the Hamptons by visiting the website www.olh.org.
RELIGIOUS EDUCATION
CONFIRMATION DATE: MAY 9, 2012 4:30 PM Bishop Nelson
PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU ARE REGISTERED AT SACRED HEARTS OF JESUS AND MARY. REGISTRATION FORMS ARE AVAILABLE BY CALLING THE PARISH OFFICE AT 283-0097. Parents of children who will be entering first grade in September: If your child is entering the first grade and you want him/her to receive the sacraments in the parish, it is time to register them for the Religious Education Program if they are not attending Our Lady of the Hamptons or some other Catholic School. Religious Education Registration forms are now available on the parish website: www.shjmbasilica.org. Please remember that children are required to attend each year from first to eighth grades, in order to be prepared for the receiving of Confirmation in the eighth grade. Also attendance each week is a must unless the child is sick or has a good reason for missing a class. Please encourage the school and coaches not to schedule games or practices on Wednesday afternoon or evening or Sunday mornings. It is up to all of us to encourage the importance of Religious Education in our community. Please check the website for meetings and Announcements. For more information please call

Mark Your Calendars :: Parish Lenten Mission with Msgr. Jim Vlaun, Fr. Mike Vetrano, and guests on March 11-13, 2013 A Break from the Madness (March or otherwise!): Finding the Joy, Hope, and the Peace of God's Love Amidst Life's Turbulent Times It was the Jesuit theologian Pierre Teilhard de Chardin who reminded us that Joy is the
infallible sign of the presence of God! Our mission this year will focus on how
Christians can find that joy, even in the difficulties and struggles of life. Joy, Hope, and
Peace can not only bring us happiness but is also the foundation for the ministries of the
church. St. Francis told his followers to Preach the gospel always! Use words only if
necessary! He understood that the gifts of the spiritual life are meant to be shared!
Plan to be with us for this Lenten mission.
Join the Choirs Here at the Basilica we are developing a music program for each
of our parish masses. We would love to use your talents as a vo-
calist, leader of song, or instrumentalist to build a strong program
of music for all our ministries. Why not make it a New Year’s
resolution to become an active part of our parish music program.

Dear Faithful Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
Christ is born, sing glory! Christ has descended from heaven, go out to meet Him! Christ is on earth; lift yourselves up! Sing to the Lord, all the Earth for He Who belongs to heaven is now on earth! Christ has become flesh, so tremble and rejoice; tremble because of sin and rejoice because of hope: Christ is born of the Virgin!
These beautiful words of the great Saint Gregory Nazianzen (329-389) can be heard across our world
and around the globe this Christmas. Christ is born again this year in our hearts as He was born in the flesh of the Virgin Mary two thousand years ago in Bethlehem. Like the shepherds, we welcome Him into our hearts and into our lives. We know His coming changes all of humanity. We pray that His love will constantly increase in us so that we might belong more deeply to Him and to His Church and thus to one another. Bethlehem has reopened Eden and in the grotto of Bethlehem we regain the goods of Paradise. (Romanos the Melodist c. 540) In this Year of Faith, Christmas is the great feast when we can renew our faith in God’s love made manifest in the birth of His Son, Jesus the Christ. This is the feast that opens our eyes to the concrete expression of divine love now become an intimate part of the life of every man and woman who believes in the heart and professes with one’s lips that Jesus, this Child, Jesus, is the Son of God. He is Lord and Savior. In this Year of Faith, we all recently have been tried through the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy. So many have lost homes. So many have had to struggle. So many need help. And so many of you have been generous, giving, caring and loving toward our brothers and sisters in need. I love those words of Blessed John Paul II: we do not know why God allows suffering but we do know that suffering releases love. Love, God’s love, was released in superabundance in a stable in Bethlehem. That love has never ceased to flood our hearts, strengthen our families, encourage the young and give consolation to the elderly. And the more we adore the Son of God born of the Virgin Mary, the more we too are cooperators in spreading God’s love from that stable into our parishes, our communities and all the world. With you I pray that this Christmas will bring us joy and happiness. Even more I pray Christmas will bring peace especially to the Middle East. And I pray that you and I who welcome Jesus into our hearts may be His instruments to offer His love and His gift of peace to all the world. Joyful and blessed Christmas to one and all!

Keeping Our History As we celebrate the first year of the dedication of SHJM as a basilica I invite everyone
to take a trip into their attics and photo albums! We would like to compile a history of
our parish through stories, pictures, news clippings, announcements, and even video.
If you have and memorable images or reminders from our history please share them
with us. You may dedicate them to our archive or simply have us copy and return the
item to you. Who knows! Maybe you have a old movie clip that will remind us all of
part of SHJM history. For information contact Fr. Mike or Gina Arresta at the rectory.
Catholic Ministries Appeal—Almost to our Goal! With just a few short weeks ago our Catholic Ministries Appeal total stands at $47,080, just a few
contributors short of our goal of $54,200! We began December at just a little over $45,000 but
some generous contributions have brought us close to our goal. The CMA is important to our dio-
cese because it funds much needed programs in Catholic Charities, the education of new Priests
and Deacons, and support for our schools. It is important to our parish because when we reach our
goal we earn a substantial rebate to use right here in our own ministries. Making our goal this year
will bring more than $10,000 back here to Sacred Hearts. Could you be the one to put us over the
top with a generous Christmas gift to the appeal? Make a contribution today and help us reach our
goal!

tiempos”.Padre Richard Zajac. Derechos de autor © 2012, World
Library Publications.
Derechos de autor © 2012, World Library Publications.

Texto: Michael R. Prendergast, MTS, MA © 2004, OCP. Derechos reservados.
