Kaapo Kakko Has A Lot Of Mystique Heading Into The NHL Draft

By Russ Cohen/Sportsology

Kaapo Kakko is expected to be the second overall pick in the 2019 NHL Draft. Before you know it, all the top prospects will be in Vancouver and the Finnish winger will be on full display. In the meantime, I found out he doesn’t currently speak English. I had questions for him and through the help of a friend I got some of them answered. When the Rangers draft him, I don’t think they have any long-range plans of making him a center. He can play that position, but he is much more dangerous on the wing. He’s just better at it. Asking a player about their immediate goals can get a variety of answers but this prospect has his eyes on the prize. “My goal is just to play in the NHL this coming season,” he stated. Kakko is used to playing against older players. This year he had a chance to play in the World Championships. Not until the past few years did draft-eligible players get much of a chance to play in that tournament. He did and now he’s able to cross one item off his bucket list. “WC gold was a dream come true for me, one of my dreams,” said Kakko, not having to say what is two others are, Olympic gold and the Stanley Cup. Kakko has the top-line ability, but probably won’t play on the top line right away. He’s terrific down low and can take the puck the length of the ice. He has fast hands and his one-timer is elite. At 6-2, 190 pounds he will be a threat to win the Calder next season. Nobody gets there without hard work over the summer and his summer is already planned out – he’s said that he will work on his speed and strength. “I will train with Hannu Rautala. He is a trainer based in Turku, Finland. Many Finnish NHLers train with him during the summer, like Patrik Laine, Mikko Rantanen, Mikko Koivu.” Five years ago, he was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes and Celiac disease. Not only does this prospect have a chance to be a star player, but he can be a role model to other kids around the world with similar circumstances. “There are no playing restrictions (except diet and food restrictions), never has been, never will be, and I can play just like everyone else without these diseases. I don’t even think about it,” said Kakko. He also said parents with these same issues can be inspirational to their kids. The draft is a big moment for every player who hears his name called. Kakko will have some family there to cheer him on. “My parents and kid brother will be in Vancouver,” he said with pride. He’s intense. He’s got a sense of humor. He’s going to be special.

2019 NHL Free Agency Preview

THE PHILADEPHIA FLYERS (IMAGES OF SPORTS) – available through Barnes & Noble, Amazon & other fine sellers

By Rick Morris/The FDH Lounge If U-Haul trucks are doing a brisk business in Columbus on July 1, that’s a horrible sign for the future of the Blue Jackets as three of the leading stars of this year’s free agency market skated for the home team this past year: Artemi Panarin, Matt Duchene and Sergei Bobrovsky. Actually, San Jose can be plundered pretty well also, with Joe Pavelski, Gustav Nyquist, Joe Thornton and Erik Karlsson sitting there for the taking. Other top forwards include Mats Zuccarello, Anders Lee, Kevin Hayes, Marcus Johansson, Michael Ferland and Justin Williams. The ranks of further good defensemen are much thinner, with Alexander Edler and Jake Gardiner representing. The other goalies in the crop are much better, with Robin Lehner (great timing!), Curtis McElhinney (ditto!), Petr Mrazek, Mike Smith and Semyon Varlamov potentially setting their water bottles on another net next year.

Black Draft Tracking Worksheet

Some Possible 2019 NHL Draft Scenarios

By Russ Cohen/Sportsology

With the 2019 NHL Entry Draft rapidly approaching I had some ideas of what may happen there. I think there will be trades and it’s possible that it could affect the top 10 and more as we move forward. 1) The Edmonton Oilers trade the 8th overall selection in a deal to acquire a player and try to move a contract like Milan Lucic. The Oilers may have to throw in a prospect as well. 2) I think the Philadelphia Flyers will try and trade up to acquire a top 10 pick either for Cole Caufield or Dylan Cozens. Who could be their trade partner? Maybe the Oilers, maybe the Sabres, maybe the Red Wings. It would depend on how the board looks and how long these two remain on it until they think one of them will be gone with the next pick and then they try and acquire it. 3) The Columbus Blue Jackets will trade the right to negotiate with Artemi Panarin, maybe to the Rangers, or Islanders or Panthers. They will also trade the right to negotiate with Sergei Bobrovsky. I think for both they could get two draft picks from Florida, (maybe a third in 2019 and something in 2020, or one of their 2019, 4thround picks) because it seems like they will go UFA no matter what. 4) I think the Wild will look to make a move to save more salary. If they’re trading Jared Spurgeon, Jonas Brodin or Jason Zucker (2022-23) if a team is willing to accept that term. The draft would be the best place to do it. The Flyers would certainly be interested in the defenseman, among a lot of teams. 5) I think the San Jose Sharks will try and trade the rights to Erik Karlsson. If a team thinks they have a great chance of landing him, almost a guarantee, that could get them back into the second round of this draft where they can be dangerous as always. The Rangers have two second-

round picks.

The Russian Five Review By Russ Cohen/Sportsology The Russian Five is a great documentary talking about the time that the Detroit Red Wings smuggled and signed Sergei Fedorov, Vladimir Konstantinov, Slava Kozlov, Slava Fetisov, and Igor Larionov. The story is amazing, and it took place at a time when Russia never let their players leave and letting them play in the United States was an impossible dream for those players for a lot of reasons. Jimmy Devellano and Jim Lites, were both in the Red Wings front office at the time and they steal scenes, a lot of them. Seeing what Detroit was like back in the ’90s was interesting. It’s almost hard to remember how bad the Red Wings were in the ’80s and they took a risk to try and win the Stanley Cup. It was bold. Actor, Jeff Daniels, added a nice fan perspective as well. Joshua Riehl did a great job of directing this. It moves quickly and never gets slow or boring. Gold Star Film production did a fantastic job with this project. I knew about this entire story, had heard a lot of versions of it, but still found out things I didn’t know from this movie.

Designing a Dream NHL Tournament By Rick Morris/The FDH Lounge

Those wishing to shorten the NHL’s regular season to a more-humane 67 games have a burden of proof vis-à-vis demonstrating how such a move could be executed without anyone involved losing income – which seems almost impossible. But, characteristically, The FDH Lounge has an idea just wild enough to be successful.

It’s an 18-game, one-month, tournament just after the end of a 67-game season, targeted to begin Memorial Day weekend, involving four All-Star teams, one representing each division in the league. Each team would play all of the others twice, a home-and-away matchup, with games spread all over the league. After the 6-game slate is concluded, the top four teams will square off in semifinals, then a championship, with margin of victory settling all seeding tiebreakers.

Key to this collectively-bargained deal would be the mandate that all healthy players participate, since, again, they’re keeping their full salaries notwithstanding a shorter NHL season. That’s not to say that there won’t be injury exemptions, which are included in our projection of what each roster would look like – and how we would rate their chances for success. Those rosters are listed to the right, with injured players omitted.

Preview Of FantasyDrafthelp.com Ultimate Hockey Stat For 2019-20

This is the FantasyDrafthelp.com statistic, the Ultimate Quantitative Baseline, based on the statistical principle of standard deviation from

the mean. For defensemen and forwards, the relevant statistics are points, goals, assists, penalty minutes and plus-minus. For goalies, the

relevant statistics are wins, shutouts, goals against average and save percentage (with the categories being weighted extra since there is one

less). In each category, a spectrum is calculated from the best performance to the worst (on a per-game basis for forwards and defensemen).

The numbers in each category are added together to create our statistic. An additional equalizer is injected to apply more points to each

player at the positions of scarcer depth. What this stat truly does is to quantify beyond doubt how the stronger and weaker performances in

each category add up to the absolute fantasy value for each player. As such, it establishes a baseline for performance that is more

comprehensive than anything ever developed. A number over 300 is considered elite and 375 constitutes a perfect score. We have listed

below the top rankings at each position for last season as well as the Top 35 overall.
