PRAYER TO GOD THE FATHER
Our Father in heavenHoly be your nameYour kingdom come
Your will be done on earthAs it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.Forgive us our sins
As we forgive those who sin against us.Do not bring us to the test
But deliver us from evil. Amen.
PRAYER TO LOVE & SERVE GOD
Loving God! Teach me to be generous
Teach me to love you and serve you as you
deserve
To give and not to count the cost
To fight and not to heed the wounds
To toil and not to seek for rest
To work and not to look for reward.
All I want to know
Is that I do your most holy will.
(Prayer of St. Ignatius of Loyola)

LIFE OF ST. IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA
St. Ignatius of Loyola, the founder of theSociety of Jesus, was born in 1491 in the BasqueCountry of Northern Spain to parents ofdistinguished families in that area. He was theyoungest of 13 children and was called Iñigo. Atthe age of 15, he served as a page in the court ofa local nobleman and later embraced a militarycareer and became a valiant soldier.
Wounded in battle by a cannon ball, whichbroke one leg and injured the other, he was takenprisoner by the French, who set his leg andeventually allowed him to go home to Loyola. Hespent his time recuperating at the home of hisbrother. Confined to his sick bed, he was givenpious books to read, which he grudgingly accepted. To his surprise, he enjoyed them and began todream of becoming a “knight for Christ”, pursuingthe ideals of St. Francis and St. Dominic. Heeventually promised to devote his life to being aknight for St. Peter if he recovered, which he didafter nine months of convalescence.
Ignatius noticed that after doing good deedsfor the Lord, he felt peaceful — which he termedas a “consolation”, but when he thought of being asuccessful soldier or of impressing a beautiful
13Academic Calendar 2017-2018
woman where he had initially felt enthused, he laterfelt dry. Through this process of discernment,Ignatius was able to recognize that God wasleading him to follow a path of service. Out of thisexperience he wrote his famous “SpiritualExercises”.
After traveling and studying in differentschools, he finished in Paris, where he receivedhis masters degree at the age of 43. Many initiallyhated St. Ignatius because of his humble andaustere lifestyle. Despite this, he attracted manyfollowers at the university, including St. FrancisXavier, and soon started his order, the Society ofJesus, or the Jesuits. He travelled to Europe andthe Holy Land, then settled in Rome to direct theJesuits. His health suffered in later years, and hewas nearly blind at death. He died at the age of65.
”Few souls understand what God wouldaccomplish in them if they were to abandonthemselves unreservedly to Him and if they wereto allow His grace to mold them accordingly.”
— Saint Ignatius of Loyola.
