a connected community: who do you know?

For a small village of around 900 people I am constantly amazed by the number of individuals giving up their time to make a real difference to our community. From Brownies to the Repair Café, Hatton in Bloom to HATS and every other one of the diverse groups, clubs and events, Hatton can be rightly proud of its active volunteers and the cross section of residents that they seek to involve. Despite the diverse activities of groups, there remain small sections of our community under-represented. For some time now I have been considering if there is some way that I could involve these people more. Firstly you might ask who is it that I am talking about? Well I’m talking about anyone who might be described as having a “learning difficulty”, developmental needs (such as autism) or indeed anyone with a disability that might in some way exclude them from day to day activities, the sorts of things that most of us take for granted. Additionally, anyone that might consider themselves of non-British heritage or in an ethnic minority, along with the older retired generation. Finally, secondary school pupils from S3 upwards, particularly if female. Secondly, what is the benefit to being part of this? Well I’m hoping to provide an opportunity to do something unique and unrepeatable! The group will gain a huge sense of achievement and amaze friends, neighbours and family. For school pupils it is something that will really impress prospective employers. It could even be on the telly! But ultimately this project brings together and breaks down barriers between people of differing ages, abilities and backgrounds, reducing discrimination and giving a real opportunity to connect our whole community. Thirdly you might ask how am I going to achieve this? (Well I do have a cunning plan in mind.) If you know of anyone that might be interested in being part of this please get them to contact me or do so on their behalf. If you are under 18, please get your parent or guardian to make the first contact. (You will find contact details on page 27 of the newsletter.) For a small village of around 900 people I am constantly amazed by the number of individuals giving up their time to make a real difference to our community. As the fabulous summer of 2018 draws to a close, Hatton Gala seems a distant memory. The smell of candy floss, burgers sizzling on the BBQ, sound of children laughing, watching the Highland dancing, listening to live music, sitting on the hay bales watching the world go past…… a great day was had by all.

Sunday morning – bright and early, a hearty bunch gathered to start the day of festivities - thank you to you all for getting up with the sun on a Sunday morning to set the field up for the day. Especially when it began to rain - thankfully it didn’t last too long - but long enough to soak through!

Once the Gala was opened, the girls from Sylvia Dalziel School of Highland Dancing gave us demonstration of their skill and agility on the stage. We then got to listen to the talented Amanda Penny as she sang a varied collection of songs. The Mutiny Tribal Belly Dancers returned to the Gala this year and gave us two lively performances - and with some audience participation! The drums and dancing dragon of Yee’s Hung Ga was a vibrant addition to the afternoon. We had “Phoenix Magic” happening across the field for the duration of the afternoon. Dubby Beats took to the stage once more as the final entertainment of the Gala.

The dog show proved popular once more, with more entries in all categories than last year. Thanks to Anna-Marie Dixon for organising and all the entrants for making it possible.

The 10k run was busy and the runners more than earned their gingerbread and medals. The Anna Hutcheon Memorial 5 km run was also well attended. Thank you to John Willox Kitchen Design for the 10k sponsorship and EasyHeat for the 5k. Other race sponsors were Robertson Granite, The Hatton Mill and Morrisons - their support is greatly appreciated. The 1990 Ellon Squadron Air Cadets did a fantastic job as marshals for the race (they also were extremely helpful during setting up and breaking down the field) Thank you to all the other helpers who ensured the smooth running of the race.

entertainment for all. The annual welly throw was hotly contested once more. The large selection of stalls and the BBQ (thank you Murdoch Allan for the donation of the baps for the burgers and hot dogs) ensured there were ample activities and refreshments on the field. The craft fair and teas over in the hall provided a change of scene and a place to sit and refuel. The Critter Keeper had to de-camp to the hall, as the field was just a wee bit chilly for the critters.

Once the final raffle ticket was drawn and everyone headed home, a band of volunteers dismantled, packed and tidied it all away – and once it was, we headed to the Mill for a tasty dinner from their new menu.

We added a Pub Quiz to the activities this year. Much fun was had as we thought long and hard to dig those answers out from the depths of our memories. Thank you to Sly at the Mill for providing much needed food at half time.

The following Saturday we had the car boot sale in the morning and the Annual Duck and Bottle Race in the afternoon. The weather stayed dry – just! Thanks go to the hardy souls that came to the burn – who knew it was such fun cheering on a blob of yellow plastic! The duck race results are as follows – First: Mandy Edwards, Second: Jim MacDonald, third: Moira Watt. Booby prize – Billy Murdoch. Thank you to everyone who bought a duck or ducks in this year’s race.

May we take this opportunity to thank everyone who helped make this year’s Gala possible – you are all amazing. Till next year……

Hatton Playgroup Hatton Playgroup is the pre-school facility for Hatton village and the surrounding area.

We operate Monday to Friday 9.00 am to 12.10 pm in the village hall.

Council funded places for children aged 3 - 5 years old. We offer a fun and stimulating environment for children to learn.

Registered with the Care Inspectorate. You are welcome to come down to playgroup

and have a look around. For more information please

contact Lynsey Matheson on 07929919446

The Hatton Repair Café is now well established and gives an opportunity to get an item of clothing, jewellery, or a small electrical item mended by volunteers. The most recent meeting in September also included a Garden Give Away of excess of plants and produce.

The Repair Café meets in the Hatton Public Hall and there is always a hot drink on tap and biscuits aplenty. All this is free, though a small donation towards the cost of repair materials and drinks is welcome, but not essential.

Our aim is to save cash and the environment, to share skills and to get to know our fellow villagers. We can’t promise to fix everything that is brought along but we will do our best. New volunteers welcome.

Many thanks to all the volunteers, everyone that came along, and to HARA for their continuing support

For more information and to find out the date of the next Repair Café, contact Ruth on 841850 or via the HARA Facebook page.

Hatton Baby and Toddler Group

We meet every Thursday morning from 9 am -11am upstairs in the Hatton Public Hall. We realise how daunting it can be coming to a new group for the first time, but we’re a friendly bunch, so why not give it a try! It’s a place for parents, grandparents and carers to meet and make friends with others, whilst your pre-school children play in safety with a wide variety of toys and games. We also do arts and crafts with the children, such as Easter and Christmas cards and finger painting when we are feeling really brave! The price is £2.50 a session including a snack for the kids and a bottomless biscuit tub and coffee for the parent/carer. We look forward to seeing you soon! Contact Nomi on 07970076515 for more information or join our Facebook page which is Hatton baby and toddler group.

We have recently installed a “Health Check Point” in reception at our Hatton Surgery. Patients are encouraged to have a look when you are at the surgery and use the Blood Pressure machine for checking your blood pressure. Please take your recording to your appointment with you or hand to reception and it will be recorded on your records.

As with all good things, most things come to an end. As we say goodbye to the beautiful sunny warm weather, we welcome the colder winter months. With the colder weather comes unwanted illness. Please remember to seek advice from your local chemist for minor illness such as sore throats, coughs and colds. The chemist will be able to advise you and provide medication if required.
