PASTOR’S COMMENT: “The gospel passage for this Second Sunday of Advent carries us to the time just prior to Jesus’ public ministry, not His birth. It draws us out from the rush toward the Commercial Xmas and invites us to encounter the God of mercy Who is with us always. Open your heart to Jesus’ reconciling love and allow Him to walk with you to Christmas. Receive the gift of God’s generous love and pass it on! — Fr. John SCRIPTURE: "What return can I make to the Lord for all the good He has done for me...? — Psalm 116:12 COMMENT: "Giving is true loving." — C. Spurgeon, Baptist preacher

Serving the Community of Sacred Heart Parish and South Plainfield

The parishioners of Church of the Sacred Heart have been most generous, especially during difficult economic times. We continue to ask for your support to help the needy in our community. During Advent, many people despair over the commercialism of Christmas. But, long before television began blasting news of pre-Christmas sales, people have been giving gifts to each other at Christmastime. We love to give gifts. We love to be surprised and to surprise others. Perhaps gift-giving at Christmas persists not because of commercialism, but in spite of it. Gift-giving can be a joy-filled experience that reflects Christian charity, not commodity.

The Advent Giving Tree presents the opportunity to experience that feeling of “joyful giving” by exchanging a tree ornament to help the poorest members of God’s family. Monetary Gift Cards are needed from local stores (Supermarkets, Kohls, Target, Walmart, CVS, Walgreens, etc.) in denominations of $10, $15, $25. Gift cards can be returned to the Poor Boxes located at the entrances of the Church or to the Parish Center.

Special thanks to the Girl Scouts for crafting the ornaments and for decorating the two Advent Giving Trees in the front church foyer and inside at the St. Joseph’s statue.

If you know of families in need, please help us to assist them. Call the Social Concerns Ministry: 908-756-0633 x112, Monday, Wednesday, Friday from 9:00 - 10:30AM.

    JESSE TREE SYMBOLS

    Year of Mercy

    December 8, 2015 – November 20, 2016

“It is a favorable time to heal wounds, a time to offer everyone the way of forgiveness and reconciliation.” — Pope Francis

Pope Francis chose December 8, 2015 (The Feast of the Immaculate Conception) to open the Year of Mercy because that day marks the 50th anniversary of the closing of Vatican Council II. Just as the Council looked to renew the Church, Francis is proclaiming that mercy is the key to the Church’s continuing renewal in this time. Francis called mercy the very foundation of the Church’s life. “Wherever there are Christians, everyone should find an oasis of mercy.” Mercy means to come to the aid of another out of a sense of relationship. One way we can foster this relationship is by practicing the Spiritual and Corporal Works of Mercy, as suggested by Pope Francis. God's mercy is a monumental theme in Scripture, the English word appearing some 341 times in the Bible. The four Hebrew and three Greek words associated with this term appear a total of 454 times and are also translated as "kindness," "lovingkindness," "goodness," "favor," "compassion," and "pity." Of the sixty-six books of the Bible, only sixteen do not use one of these words for mercy Let us be aware of the many ways and people to whom we can give and to receive mercy during the Year of Mercy. “Give thanks to the Lord, for He is good, for His mercy endures forever.” — Daniel 3:89 Sources: Morris III, H. 2007. God's Everlast ing Mercy. Acts & Facts. 36 (11): 4 and A Season of Mercy by David Knight, Twenty-third Publication, 2015

    Jesse’s Family Tree

The Jesse Tree is an old tradition, dating back hundreds of years to the Middle Ages. The fifth and fourth grade students of Holy Savior Academy decorated the ornaments for Sacred Heart’s Jesse Tree. This Advent symbol includes Jesus’ family tree combined with other figures who played important roles in handing down our faith traditions throughout the ages. These men and women are part of our own “faith family tree.” They are our ancestors in faith because they passed their love of God and belief in Him down from generation to generation. We hope you enjoy the handiwork of our students! — Mrs. Geralyn Nuber, 5th Grade & Mrs. Daneile Micale, 4th Grade
