Pigs, also called ‘swine’ or ‘hogs,’ are among the smartest animals. Theyare also very social animals and can talk to each other by using calls, snorts, sniffs, and whistles.

Amazing Facts About Pigs!Pigs are very clean animals, and when given the choice, pigsrefuse to go to the bathroom close to their living and eatingareas. Pigs roll in mud because they don’t have sweat glandsand they do this to keep cool.

Sadly, most pigs in the United States are raised for food anddon’t live in barns or the outdoors. Instead they spend most oftheir life in closed buildings called factory

farms where they are kept in small crates and can’t roam free.

Fetal pigs (unborn baby pigs) are often dissected (cut open) inbiology classs.

Be A Pig Pal!• Tell all your friends that pigs are cool! The more people

know about pigs, the more people will care about what happens to them.

• Try taking the pork off your plate! There are many delicious vegetarian foods, such as veggie bacon and sausage. Make pigs your friends, not your food!

• There are so many great things you can do to learn about pigs that won’t hurt them. You can borrow a fetal pig model, CD-ROM, or video for free from Animalearn.

Dogs, like humans, are social animals. They like being together.

Amazing Facts About Dogs!Dogs are called “man’s best friend” because they are very loyal to their human companions.

Dogs are not always friendly to strangers. They may even get angry with other dogs and growl, but usually they walk away afterwards. Some people make dogs fight in a mean way. Dog-fighting is cruel, and it is against the law in the United States.

There are almost 73 million pet dogs in the United States. A dog can weigh as little as 3 pounds or as much as 200 pounds! The smallest dog is the Chihuahua and the biggest dog is the Great Dane.

Dogs have a very strong sense of smell. A human nose has 5 million scent cells but a dog nose can have as many as 300 million!

Some dogs are kept in cages in research laboratories and made sick on purpose. Sometimes they even die. A lot of people think that dogs shouldn’t have to suffer in laboratories and are trying to change this.

In today’s science classes, students don’t need to keep dogs in cages or harm them in any way in order to learn. There are humane (kind) alternatives (different ways to learn such as with computers), that can be used instead of animals.

Adopt a dog from an animal shelter or dog rescue group instead of a pet store. There are a lot of dogs who need homes and want to be your best friend!

Make sure your dog is spayed (for a girl dog) or neutered (for a boy dog) to cut down on pet overpopulation (too many cats and dogs).

It is important for dogs to go to a veterinarian (an animal doctor) at least once a year to make sure they are healthy.

Take your dog for a walk every day. The exercise is good for him and the time you spend together will make him happy.

Some human food will make dogs very sick. For example, chocolate and grapes should never be given to a dog.

If you see a dog who is in danger or needs help, be a friend! Tell a grown-up right away.
