From the Artistic Producer and Director

Welcome to the Firehall Arts Centre and this premiere production of The Enemy. Drawing on many translations of Henrik Ibsen’s An Enemy of the People and in particular, Arthur Miller’s 1950’s version, I have chosen to set the play, The

Enemy, in a mid-sized town in the upper interior of British Columbia. I am very grateful to both of these amazing playwrights for providing such a powerful tool and as we face so many challenges in this increasingly polarized world, I am hopeful that individual citizens will recognize that we all have a role in increasing understanding between those who have different life experiences and beliefs.

As truth is challenged, scientific research questioned and freedom of speech

denied, apathy is not a choice. Each of us can engage and work with others to ensure that the world becomes more democratic not less. n 2003, we did a

production of An Enemy of the People in which the wonderful David Petersen

performed as Martin Kell. Mr Petersen recently passed, leaving us to play on a much larger stage and I would like to dedicate this production to him.

Thank you so much for coming. I hope you enjoy our production and that it stimu-lates much discussion after the play. We are hoping that you will pass the word along to others through whatever means of communication you use. Enjoy,

debate, consider! And ask yourself, who is the real enemy?

Donna Spencer

Playwright Notes

It has been a wonderful challenge to adapt and create a new play, The

Enemy, from Henrik Ibsen’s iconic An Enemy of the People. Written in 1882 and first produced at the Christiania Theatre on January 13, 1883, the play has been produced around the world countless times through translations and

adaptations. Called the Father of Modern Drama, Ibsen questioned viewpoints of the time, classism, female emancipation and many subjects not broached on the stages of the late 19

th and early 20

th century.

Following Ibsen’s death in 1906 the first translation of his collected works was undertaken by William Archer. In developing The Enemy, I worked from a

number of translations and the late Arthur Miller’s adaption written in 1950 during the time of McCarthyism in the United States. My goal was to create a play that would stay true to Ibsen’s original themes but would connect with audiences

today. In this process, I have had tremendous assistance from the actors in this current cast, Wesley Eccleston and the students at TRU ( who produced my

earlier adaptation in 2014) and the cast of the Firehall’s production in 2003.

Thank you to them , Mr. Miller and, of course, Mr. Ibsen for without him The

Enemy would not exist.
