Da Nang – let’s get started

Thanks for choosing to visit Da Nang. It’s Vietnam’s third largest city and one of

the friendliest in Southeast Asia.

In Da Nang you’ll find genuine smiles, warm welcome, friendly locals,

beautiful beaches & stunning scenery.

This city used to be considered a ten minute destination: an airport for car

transfers to Hoi An, but in actual fact, Da Nang is the epicenter for many

attractions and has the most unspoiled beaches, bays, parks and promenades

in the country.

Danang is in early stages of its tourism development so you’ll avoid the rip-offs,

scams, touts, hawkers, profiteers and hassles that annoy visitors to more

established tourist towns.

We have the finest quality & variety of seafood in Vietnam with some quite

unique fish and shellfish to try.

Da Nang makes an ideal base for exploring the cultural heritage and

geographical treasures of the central coast on day trips, whilst taking a couple

of days to relax and chill out on My Khe Beach – voted by Forbes as one of

the world’s top four beaches.

The famous Hoi An ancient town is only 30 minutes South. The ancient ruins of

My Son Holy Land are 90 minutes Southwest.

Ba Na Hills sits atop the mountains just 40 minutes West. It has the world’s

longest and steepest cable car ascent and ‘four seasons a day’.

Driving 30 minutes North through Hai Van Pass you will see some of the most

gorgeous coastal scenery and bays in Vietnam unfolding around you.

Two hours north is the old imperial capital of Hue with its Citadel, perfumed

river and famous street food.

You won’t see a lot of information about Da Nang but it is a destination with

many benefits and things to see. Take this book with you and show your driver to find things

more easily.

If you want to do a self tour and risk the Danang roads, we suggest hiring a Motorbike

opposite Lifestyle Resort at Paradise Foot Massage, Daily, Weekly or Monthly rates apply.

Let them know that you’re staying here and she will discount the Rental Rate

The beaches are on the East side of the city. The Han River runs through the

centre of Da Nang, bisecting the city.

My Khe Beach rated by “Forbes Magazine” as the fourth best beach in the world.

Fantastic swimming in the summer months with a gentle, gradient, warm water

and stunning scenery. The sun rises over the ocean horizon and sets behind

the city. The roof of any tall building or hotel that faces the city and mountains

is a great place for sunset.

An even better place to see the sunset is swimming in the ocean at My Khe or

Bac My An Beach, bobbing around in the waves and watching the sky turn into

a fiery work of art.

Son Tra Peninsula and the Big Buddha face back to the city also. Son Tra is an

amazing spot to have a bite or a drink as the sun sets. The freshest seafood is

available right on the water at reasonable prices, and it feels like you are a

million miles away.

3

Page 5: A guide to Danang eBook JUL2012

The Beaches are 3-5km from the city and it costs around $5 / 100,000vnd by

taxi. The beach area is less congested than the city side, although South of our

resort towards Hoi An, the whole coast is under rapid development. Most local

seafood places are exceptional, although many are without English menus or

English speaking staff. You’ll often choose seafood live from the holding tanks.

Our guide on pages 18 to 20 will help you choose from menus, and cold beer on page 16

The city has cyclo taxis to enjoy the sights at a slower relaxed pace. The

riverside has bars, restaurants, shops and hotels and the city has some

nightclubs and a wider selection of street food than the” Eastside”.

4

Page 6: A guide to Danang eBook JUL2012

In Da Nang itself:

Big Buddha and the Son Tra Peninsula

The Big Buddha is a prominent landmark visible from most Da Nang beaches. It

was built to watch over and protect Da Nang.

You can see it half way along the Son Tra Peninsula, a scenic jungle-clad

headland at the north of the main beach. Hoang Sa Street winds around the

hills of Son Tra through small craggy bays until it peters into a track.

Most of Son Tra has gorgeous views of the ocean, beach, islands and city. You

can see all the way down the coast to Hoi An.

There’s no better place to hide away, especially between 4pm and sunset. It

feels so private, remote, unspoiled, yet is only 15 minutes from the city centre.

This is a must-visit area.

5

Page 7: A guide to Danang eBook JUL2012

3- 5km past Big Buddha on right hand side of the road, there are some

stunning “absolute beachfront” local seafood restaurants which are

shaded from the sun, with a nice sea breeze. Especially great at sunset

and late afternoon. They open until 7-9pm. Very romantic, scenic and

relaxing.

The views and the sunsets are unforgettable – great eye candy.

You’re welcome for anything from a drink through to a full dinner.

Two of the best restaurants are called “Bay Ban” and “Suoi Rang”. Try

the live seafood. Our guide on pages 18 to 20 will help you choose from menus, and

cold beer on page 16

6

Page 8: A guide to Danang eBook JUL2012

Han River Bridge Cầu Sông Hàn – walk along the river promenande on

this side of the bridge at night, then walk over it to the city.

Beautiful at sunset and evening for city photos. Nicely lit at night with a fibre optics light

show and lots of activity for kids, families and couples. Bring a tripod for great

evening photo shots or get your photo taken on the bridge with the city skyline from

the local street hawkers located in the middle of the bridge.

Bac My An Market Chợ Bắc Mỹ An The local market near Lifestyle

Resort. 6.30 till 9am is a perfect time. The markets wind down in the

midday heat and re-opens with fresh supplies late afternoon.

Problems? Call the hotel on 0511 395 888 and ask for Guest Service staff if you

need translation help over the phone

Han Market Chợ Hàn – in the city. Open before dawn, but 9am is an OK

time to look, just after breakfast. Have coffee in town on the river.

7

Page 9: A guide to Danang eBook JUL2012

Marble Mountains Núi Ngũ Hành Sơn

Only 5km from Lifestyle resort and just 7 minutes by road.

360 degree Views over Da Nang. Allow 3-4 hours to walk up, check out

temples, pagodas, caves, tunnels.

This is so scenic, very close to the resort and will be a lasting memory. A

friend of ours described it as “Indiana Jones Lost Temples”, which is

pretty descriptive

Museum of Cham Sculpture

Museum of Cham Sculpture is in the city centre near the river. (Bảo tàng Điêu khắc

Champa Đà Nẵng) admission fee applies and opening hours

are 7am-5pm. Guidebooks available in Vietnamese, English and French.

If you want a tour-guide, wait at the entrance, but agree on a price before

you begin.

The Beach

Bac My An and My Khe are also known as Da Nang Beach.

In the summer our sea flattens to a safe, glassy-calm azure blue tropical

swimming beach with white sand, palm trees, thatched umbrellas,

occasional deck chairs, volleyball nets and unobtrusive food and drink

vendors.

9

Page 11: A guide to Danang eBook JUL2012

Monsoon season is from October to March. You’ll see large rolling

breakers and impressive surf. Surfers come to take advantage of the

monsoonal swells, others to look in awe at the majesty of the ocean.

10

Page 12: A guide to Danang eBook JUL2012

Sunrise over the beach & ocean In Da Nang the beach is full of people

and activity from 5.30am till 6.30am. It’s a really fun time to swim, walk

or exercise and experience the real pulse of the city.

The beach comes alive before day break, with lifesavers bobbing around

in basket boats during the swimming season.

The water is usually warm and calm in swimming season, even before

sunrise. It’s a great feeling to bob in the waves, watching the sun colour

the sea and sky. Hop out at 6.30 or 7 and have a coffee with the locals at

any nearby café. Most cafes have free wifi available.

Sunrise is great for people watching, and the best light for hauntingly

beautiful beach photography, capturing the feel and mood of our city.

11

Page 13: A guide to Danang eBook JUL2012

Day time at the beach This is one of the few places in the world that a

pristine, safe, clean, internationally renowned swimming beach is

totally empty during the daylight hours. The locals avoid being exposed

to the sun wherever possible.

You’ll see almost every local covering any inch of exposed skin when

outside in daylight, avoiding the beach until the sun is almost set.

We crazy foreigners who go to the beach during the day have the sand

and sea all to ourselves!

Lazing under a beach umbrella, you’ll find Da Nang to have un-crowded,

unspoiled beaches without peer in Asia.

The beach is just 5 minutes from the city and 15 minutes from the

airport. Our resort is right on the beach. An hour after landing at the

airport you can be checked in and frolicking in the sea.

We have shade trees and watersports on our piece of beach, and for

those who like walking & beachcombing, there’s unlimited possibility:

The public have access to the entire coast from Son Tra to Hoi An. The

beach changes character along the way, making it great to explore over

a few days.

12

Page 14: A guide to Danang eBook JUL2012

Sunset on the beach The beach is full again at sunset, beach volleyball

etc – walking & swimming. Some time should be spent amongst the

friendly, bustling high-spirited people that throng the beach strip to get

a real feel for this city. Local seafood establishments line the 5km strip between

our resort and the Han River Bridge. Perch yourself on a plastic chair for

a cold beer or a memorable feast direct from the ocean. Many have

holding tanks or aerated plastic buckets full of fish, shellfish, prawns,

lobsters etc so you can pick your own live seafood and have barbecued

or steamed within minutes.

13

Page 15: A guide to Danang eBook JUL2012

Golf

Da Nang is quickly becoming known as the Golf Coast.

Just 10 minutes drive from our resort there are two major International

Standard golf courses – Da Nang Golf Club (Greg Norman Designed) and

Montgomerie links (Colin Montgomerie Designed). They are next to each other, south of

the Resort. Many visit Da Nang just for golf as it is fantastic value for the quality. Golf can

be booked through the resort for a better rate.

Local cafes most are excellent and inexpensive, and most have free

broadband wifi. This is a very connected city when it comes to 3G, wifi

and free hotspots. Vietnamese coffee is world class. Try some.

Café sữa đá: Short Viet coffee with milk, Cafe Sữa Sài Gòn is long iced

coffee with milk, and Café đen is black coffee. Vietnamese coffee is rich,

thick and sinful. It’s the pure, unadulterated soul of coffee and it packs a

punch. Coffee is usually served with a slightly astringent cold tea which

refreshes the mouth.

Condensed milk is used and Da Nang cafes are not shy with the ice.

The coffee is so thick, so strong, so delicious that after the glass is

finished, any coffee left on the ice will melt together after 4 or 5

minutes, replenishing the glass with a ‘second drink’.

For coffee aficionados, this shouldn’t be missed, and will be something

to long for wistfully after leaving our shores.

Bars and Nightclubs

Popular Beach & City venues include:

Waterfront Bar & Restaurant (150-152 Bach Dang St Danang City) an expat & visitor’s

hangout, cold beer and a decent wine list.

Golden Pine (52 Bach Dang Street Danang City) is the newest local pub, pool tables, good

music, river views and balcony on the 2nd

floor located right next to Han River Bridge.

Bamboo Bar 2 (230 Bach Dang Street Danang City) local Vietnamese operated bar with cold

beer and bar style food. Right on the riverfront, it’s an expat & visitors hub

Dana Beach Club (Truong Sa, on Bac My An Beach)

A Vietnamese style beach club, live music, recommended for tables on the sand,

affordable drinks before heading out.

All bars above are on Bach Dang Street in the City, right on the Han River.

14

Page 16: A guide to Danang eBook JUL2012

New Phuong Dong (Formally OQ Bar) (18-20 Bach Dang St Danang City)

This is a thriving disco and dance club.

Open till very late, this is a place where the

best value is to buy a bottle of spirits and mixers and spend a few hours

amongst some hectic beats. Can’t finish a whole bottle? Take a receipt

and they keep the bottle for up to three months until your next visit.

You will definitely be talking about a night at Phuong Dong for some

time. It’s full-on action. Service is over the top, drinks and ice topped

back up after a sip or two. Hot women, strutting guys, manic pro- dancers, DJ’s, Live

Music, strobes, spots, crazy lights, deafening beats – what more

could you want. This isn’t the place to start; it’s where you end up.

Not into dance music, techno and DJ’s? For live rock music go to

Seventeen Saloon (Tran Hung Dao St Danang) on the riverside on the beach side of

the city.

For something different, our Lifestyle Resort Lobby Bar is famous for Vietnams first

liquid nitrogen cocktails. Choose from Smoking Passion, Lucious Lychee Licker or the

coolest martini you have ever tasted. The stand out cocktail is the pepper spray pig, a

fresh vibrant Thai spiced Bloody Mary with a difference. We also have wine by the

bottle or glass, and Danang’s most impressive bar snack and finger food menu. The

view down the infinity pond to the ocean is perfect early evening and twilight.

Lello Lounge “your living room on the beach this summer” (at Lifestyle Resort) is right down on the

sand, and we have Da Nang’s most mortal sin – The World’s Largest Cocktail.

served in a huge 1.2 liter martini glass. The Cham Island Iced Tea is a play on the well

known Long Island ice tea, but our use of Southern Comfort and Lychee liqueur blows the

original out of the water. Great to share as a sundowner and we have a DJ three nights a

week. With Bean Bags on the sand and Danang’s finest light bites and tapas style menu,

Lello Lounge sets the perfect backdrop this summer.

We have our own sourdough starter, naturally grown from unbleached wheat

flour, natural rye and the natural yeasts from local wild honey. Choose from

traditional ‘authentic’ Italian pizzas, or modern gourmet pizza flavours. Both

are very popular.

Our Steaks are without equal – We’ve gained acclaim for our Australian grain

fed beef which is imported chilled, not frozen. Choose from three different

cuts, with generous portion sizes and choice of accompaniment.

tasty Vietnamese seafood experience. Steamed to perfection at your table with

superheated river stones, Vietnamese aromats and local rice wine.

Other great dishes we are proud to recommend: The sea bass is exceptional,

the duck brie kway teow noodles are exclusive to our resort, and our

‘phoburger’ is a great conversation piece. It’s our house burger, and the best

Hoi An Ancient Town Many centuries ago, Hoi An was the center of commerce for Southeast Asia.

From the 7-10th centuries it was a main hub of the ‘spice route’ under the local

Cham people.

Most buildings in the ancient town date back to the 16th & 17th century when it

was the South China Sea’s most strategic trading center, peaking in the 18th

century to be the most prosperous and busy trading port in all of Asia.

Following a change in Royal Family and direction, concessions were offered to

the French who developed Da Nang as the new trading capital and Hoi An

declined into obscurity.

Much of the town is preserved in a time warp, and has recently become one of

Vietnams most popular tourist destinations. The ambience and character of the

town is very special. Our complimentary guest shuttle leaves at 10am daily. The

town is very photogenic, located on a river 6km inland from an equally

impressive beach.

Around Da Nang:

SUOl VOI (ELEPHANT SPRINGS)

Suoi Voi is a secluded recreation area about 15km north of Lang Co Beach. You

can easily spend a half-day traipsing through the forest and swimming in cool,

crystal-clear streams.

(Admission 10,000d, plus per car 10,000/per motorbike 2000d)

Look for the road marker milestone sign ‘Thu Bai 44km' (if heading North from

Da Nang to Hue) or the marker 'Danang 52km' (if coming from Hue to Da Nang)

or. There are local food stalls near the springs, or we can make a picnic basket.

You will choose from the available shaded huts along the spring to sit, and the

vendor provides mats and sells food, drinks at low prices.

The local food is stuff like whole steamed chicken, salads, frog etc, and drinks

include large chiller buckets with ice, beer, water or soft drinks buried in.

This is a very picturesque spot, and highly recommended for a day trip.

28

Page 31: A guide to Danang eBook JUL2012

LANG CO BEACH

Lang Co is an attractive, island-like stretch of palm-shaded white sand, with a

crystal-clear, turquoise lagoon on one side and 10 kilometers of beachfront on

the other. The beach is best enjoyed between April and July. From late August

till November rain & storms are frequent, and from December to March it can

get chilly.

Lang Co has a lot of local restaurants and food stands.

Local produce, hair tonics, preserves and local food items are sold along the

road and there are plenty of places for a drink, a coffee or a local seafood meal.

It is an OK place to drop into and have a wander, resorts and a Nick Faldo designed Golf

Course are being developed along the beach, although right now we’d recommend pressing

onto Hue or Elephant Springs. There is an amazing view from the final approach down Hai Van

pass

29

Page 32: A guide to Danang eBook JUL2012

BA NA HILLS

Located in the Truong Son range 25 km SW of Da Nang at an altitude of 1487m

and 50 minutes by road from Da Nang.

Ba Na has a cooler climate, unspoiled forest, and sometimes spectacular views

over the city of Da Nang. It is renowned for the four seasons in one day.

A cable car lifts you mid air, looking upon the endless tree line of the forests

and mountain ranges. It takes about 40 min to reach the top but it can be done

at a lot slower pace if you stop half way and look at the “Big Buddha” or the

Pagodas. Currently there is a resort and theme park being built which is nearing completion.

30

Page 33: A guide to Danang eBook JUL2012

SUOI MO

A short detour on the way to Ba Na, the waterfall at Suoi Mo (Flower Springs,

admission) has some clear swimming holes for a dip. It's a pretty,

undeveloped spot that is more popular with locals. Get your own hut and relax under the

many waterfalls, food is available there, it is very local style bites, however we can organize

you a packed lunch from the resort if you would prefer.

MARBLE MOUNTAINS – DA NANG

The 5 peaks of the Marble Mountains are said to represent the 5 elements of

water, wood, fire, gold and earth.

Here you can explore 3 main grottoes which have been transformed into

carved Buddhist sanctuaries. It’s handy to take a torch with you to see the

carvings and to explore the caves.

From the top you there are breathtaking 360° views over Da Nang &

surrounding areas.

That includes the city, the river, Son Tra Peninsula, Cham Island, the East Sea,

and the entire coastline from Hoi An to Da Nang.

This really is a “must see” while staying in Da Nang.

Allow 4-5 hours to really enjoy this place.

It is just 7 short minutes from Lifestyle Resort Da Nang by taxi, motorbike or

car.The marble carving vendors on the street below will try to drive a hard bargain.

You don’t have to buy, but if you are tempted, bargain hard to get a fair deal.

Maybe as much as 50% of the asking price, and be careful to watch the

exchange rate if quoted in Dong and charged in Dollars (or vice versa).

Work on 20,000VND to the dollar as a rule of thumb, and recalculate if quoted

in Dong then the credit card slip comes printed in dollars.

CHAM ISLAND

Lao Cham is a group of 8 islands. The largest island, Hon Lao, is inhabited. Hon

Lao has 8 bays & secluded beaches on the west shore, cliffs & caves on the

east. The highest point is approx 450m. Visible from the resort and all Da Nang

coast beaches, you can get here by 7.30am.

A private speed boat is available to hire, the cost for this is approx $170 for the

day and can seat 9 people. This price also includes lunch. Snorkeling gear is $2

extra per person.

From 8 to 8:30am you can show up at the very end of the beach near the river

mouth and choose from many speed boats for a transfer with lunch, snorkeling

all inclusive for 450,000VND per person ($25) – this option gets you back by

around 2 or 3pm.

An alternative way to get to Cham Islands is an inexpensive barge style ferry

boat departing Hoi An every morning at 7.30am. This is weather dependent.

MY SON (pronounced mee-sonn)

My Son “Holy Land” is around 90 minuets from Da Nang on a road winding through

small Villages and farmland.

My Son was the spiritual home of the Cham Kingdom dating back to the 14th

Century and was where Cham religious ceremonies took place. This is a

UNESCO World Heritage Site. Walk through the ruins of the temples which

poke out between grassy knolls surrounded by mountains and jungle.

Only 25 structures remain and some are undergoing restoration. This site is

part of the Ancient Kingdom whose influence and Hindu temples stretched

across Cambodia and Thailand. These are related to the ruins of Ayutthaya and

Angkor, although on a

lesser scale.

On the way there or

back, stop at the ‘Be

Thui’ shops halfway

between Da Nang and

My Son for some of

the best rare roast

beef in the region at a

very low price.

34

Page 37: A guide to Danang eBook JUL2012

Hue

The imperial city is located about 2.5 hours drive North of Da Nang past

emerald jungle & azure sea. Do yourself a favour; rent a motorbike or a car

and driver. DON’T use the tunnel. Drive the winding coast road over the

picturesque Hai Van Pass for some of the most scenic coastline in Vietnam.

Hue is situated on the ‘perfumed river’, home to the ‘Citadel’ – old imperial

palace of the past Kings of Vietnam.

Hue is famous for its ‘royal cuisine’- small unique dishes not found in other

parts of the country. Spend a half day at the citadel and then get a ‘cyclo’ to

take in the other sights at a leisurely pace.

Plan one or two nights in Hue. There’s a train several times a day to and from

Da Nang. The train heads North to Hanoi, passing through Quang Binh Province

known regionally for it’s gigantic cave structures (next paragraph). These are

yet to be ‘discovered’ and spoiled by mass tourism. Do it, Do it!

Dining in Hue DMZ Bar- Western Style Food, Cold Beer, Live Sports, Pool Table (60 Le Loi St Hue)

Khong Gian Xua Restaurant-Local Vietnamese Cuisine, the best in Hue (205 Dien Bien Phu st Hue)

Or a packed lunch can be organized from the Resort so you can eat on the move or sit in one of

the parks

35

PHONG NHA KE BANG NATIONAL PARK

Two hours North of Hue, in Quang Binh province. , so 4-5 hours North of Da

Nang. A very scenic drive or you can go by rail. The park has over 300 majestic

limestone caves set in deep, lush forest with pools, grottoes, rock formations,

underground lakes and underground tropical jungles.

It is home to the world’s two largest caves and remains unspoiled for the

moment. Google to find out more.

KHE SANH COMBAT BASE

The site of the most famous siege and one of the most controversial battles of

the American War, Khe Sanh Combat Base sits silently on a barren plateau,

surrounded by vegetation-covered hills that are often obscured by mist and

fog. It is hard to imagine as you stand in this peaceful, verdant land that in early

1968 the bloodiest battle of the war took place here. The site has a small

memorial museum. Admission fee applies; Time 7am-4.30pm. Khe San & the

Demilitarised zone has daily tours out of Hue. Hue is 5 hours drive from

Danang or a comfortable rail trip out of Da Nang in the morning.

Thanks for your interest in Da Nang.
