SO YOU WANT TO PLAN YOUR GARAGE STORAGE?

The garage is not just a place to keep the car, it's where you create, build and repair. Acting as a multi-functional storage space, the garage serves many different purposes and needs. However, this means it can quickly fill with tools, yard equipment, pool accessories, sports gear, bikes and recycling bins.

Installing versatile storage systems designed to fit your family's needs and lifestyle will help you keep your garage functional. This NewAge Product Garage Storage Planning Guide will help you organize your spacev its place.

PRO TIP: GARAGE STORAGE PLAN CHECKLIST

Purge your Garage:

Decide what to keep. Categorize these items. Get rid of or sell everything else.

Clean and Inspect:

Vacuum or sweep floors. Clean floor oil stains with detergent. Rinse and let dry. Hose down and mop floors, let dry. Declutter and properly organize the items you have chosen to keep.

Make a Storage Plan:

Draw a rough floor plan. Mark where you plan to put items from each category. Keep floor plan for future use and to quickly locate valuables.

Get Everything Possible Off the Ground:

Use vertical space (Consider using Base Cabinets, Drawers, Locker Cabinets). Use the walls (Consider Slatwall storage, Wall Cabinet). Store the items that you use least frequently in the highest place.

Finish the Job:

Take hazardous waste to the proper disposal or recycling facility. Make a run to a local charity or plan a yard sale for disposal.

Make an Entrance:

Add a doormat. Provide shelving for shoes. Hang up the closet rod in the Locker for coats and other items.

Keep up the Great Work:

Label all new products you add to storage and clearly mark it on plan. Wipe up new oil stains as they appear. Keep a box in the garage to collect special recycling/waste. Set a date once or twice a year for a thorough clean.

STEP 1: PLAN FOR THE FUTURE

It’s time to get personal... What is YOUR garage used for? Write down everything you use or store in your garage. Keep in mind any items you might need to store in the future, such as a new ATV purchase, that air compressor your neighbor borrowed or seasonal items that are currently in use.

STEP 2: DESIGNATE YOUR ZONES

Designating specific areas to store similar items will help you stay organized. Whether you're into cars, woodworking, kayaking, bikes, motorcycles, model planes or ATVs, having a dedicated space will help you enjoy your favourite pastimes. Group your needs and determine which area of the garage they will go. Here are some

EXPERT ADVICE

Think About It First

Don’t get stuck when organizing the garage - instead, design with family organization in mind. A simple redesign of your garage can make all the difference, specifically when you assign organizing “zones” to each section of the garage.

Automotive Zone Sports Equipment Zone Seasonal Items Zone

Automotive Zone

Make car repairs, detailing and maintenance a breeze with a dedicated automotive zone. Consider adding a Wall Cabinet for a place to put your car cleaning kit and install an overhead VersaRac to make storing tires easy. To have all your tools easily accessible, add a Tool Cabinet, which will also provide you with storage for your wrenches, ratchets, sockets and various sizes of nuts and bolts.

Cleaning Zone

This washing and cleaning area, ideally located near the garage sink, can keep outdoor messes out of the house. Multi-Use Locker Cabinets provide the ultimate versatile storage solution and feature adjustable shelves for storing larger items like garden hoses, watering cans, buckets or a pressure washer. Add a Multifunction Cabinet for small and medium sized items such as sponges, fluids, brushes and other cleaning tools.

CREATING ZONES IN YOUR GARAGE

Mudroom Zone

One of the best ways to organize a mudroom is to provide a dedicated space for each person. Our 15" wide Sports Lockers include adjustable shelves and a closet rod, making it easy to store everything from gloves, hats and scarves, to running shoes and sports equipment. The larger 30" or 36" wide Multi-Use Lockers are another great item for the mudroom, because they offer adjustable shelves and a closet rod for much more storage space.

Gardening Zone

A gardening zone is a must-have location for anyone with a green thumb. Base Cabinets are the perfect solution for storing your soil and watering can, while our Workbenches give you plenty of space for seed starting and potting. Add a Tool Cabinet which will also give you a place to store your gardening gloves, trowels, pruners and other garden tools.

A Guide to Planning Your Garage Storage

To create a floor plan of your garage, start by measuring the dimensions of the walls and the positions of any fixed items like windows, doors and cars. Depending on which series of cabinets you choose, the dimensions of your cabinets will vary. Check the available storage depth, height, width, as well as where installation will occur and record it on your floor plan.

Depth: Check depth noting that doors on cabinets, cars and entrances, all swing open. Pro and Performance Plus series are a 24" deep system, Bold and Performance series are a 18" deep system.

Height: Check height noting that the tallest cabinet in each series is the locker cabinet. Pro and Performance Plus series lockers require more than 84-inches of clearance, whereas the Bold and Performance series lockers, require more than 72-inches of clearance.

Width: Mark the widths of your cabinets on your garage floor plan, to ensure your cabinet selection will fit.
