The Beaver Stadium Project

Page 2: A Happier Valley

The world is becoming more energy efficient, and the Penn State community should remain competitive in the face of growing global trade. We should be a model for other universities in aspects of green electricity and sustainability.

Page 3: A Happier Valley

Problem StatementNatural

resources are depleting and we must create other ways to power our lives.

The future is in our hands.

Page 4: A Happier Valley

We Are Penn State. What is the biggest building on campus?

How can we make it better?

How will we succeed in doing this?

What effects will this have on the Penn State community?

Page 5: A Happier Valley

What is the biggest building on campus?

Beaver Stadium which holds 106,000 people and uses about 10,000,000 kWh of energy per year.

Page 6: A Happier Valley

How can we make it better?

Have Beaver Stadium run on clean energy made from wind turbines.

Page 7: A Happier Valley

How will we succeed in doing this?Penn State's campus has 192 acres of

land and an average wind speed of 14mph. Setting up a wind farm

should be noproblem.

Page 8: A Happier Valley

What effects will this have on the Penn State community?

Penn State will become a beacon of energy sustainability which will inspire others to go green.

Page 9: A Happier Valley

What Effects Do Wind Turbines have around the World?A 1 megawatt turbine will annually contribute to the displacement of emissions of gas: 1,600 tons of Carbon Dioxide, 9 tons of Sulfur Dioxide, and 4 tons of Nitrous Oxide

The use of wind turbines will reduce the production of smog, acid rain and greenhouse gases.

The production of wind turbine energy uses less than .167% the amount of water per kWh of electricity produced by nuclear power and .2% water that electricity produced from coal uses.

Wind turbines have no adverse effects on the environment around them unlike fossil fuels which add to air pollution.

Page 10: A Happier Valley

ImplementationBeaver

Stadium uses about 10,000,000 kWh of energy per year. With only 4 wind turbines the stadium could become self sufficient.

Page 11: A Happier Valley

Cost Analysis1 MW turbine 1.3-2.2 million dollars

produces about three million kWh of energy per year.

Four turbines can power this project.

Tax cuts make this cost efficient in the long run

After 16.7 years the turbines will pay for themselves in what money they save.

Page 12: A Happier Valley

The average wind turbine will last anywhere from 20-25+ years.

The wind turbine will overall save Penn State at least $1,739,592.52, without taking into account the tax deduction savings from the wind turbine.

Page 13: A Happier Valley

ConclusionThe use of wind turbines in powering Beaver

Stadium will make Penn State a greener campus by cutting down the use of non-renewable resources used and it will cut the costs of powering Beaver Stadium in the long run.
