SPORTSFISHER OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE NICKOL BAY SPORTSFISHING CLUB
Ahoy there, Sportsfishers!
We have had a big month with both the Guy Fawkes’ night burger cook off (which raises funds for our comps and also helps make the night a success for our partners the HHBSC) and the Mackerel comp both being held in November. A big thanks to Ken, James, MC Dogsy, Luke, Cody and Carpo for their help in organising and assisting in these events – and all competing families like the Marriotts’ who made the macky competition a very successful event. The Billfish Committee has kicked off their first meeting and exciting news is that the City of Karratha has committed to assisting financially in 2016 which allows us to get things moving early. ANSA are guest speakers at our December meeting and are demonstrating the tagging data base capabilities and how we can set it up to utilise the data log in to see our individual tag and release captures. Quiz master Luke has organised another quiz which is always very entertaining. We have also organised some finger food and Christmas drinks for the December meeting. Team Raddler competed in the KBGFC Estuary Challenge this year consisting of one Mark Cottrell and Justin Leech but minus Tom Radley. Unfortunately, the name did not bring as much luck as the past few FENACL competitions but they still fished strongly and had a good competition in tough conditions. Congratulations to Justin and Candice on their new arrival! I am sure there will be some healthy competition in years to come between the Leechs’, Radleys’ and news of a Brinkhuist on the way early next year as well. Welcome back to our members from both Scott Reef and West Papua, we look forward to the full run down in December. Look forward to seeing you soon and tight lines.

Christmas Special – Club Shirts are $50.00 so please grab one as a great Christmas gift – as
soon as we move these we can look to some potential new designs being considered.

SPORTSFISHER OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE NICKOL BAY SPORTSFISHING CLUB
Hi Sportsfishers,
The Balla Balla Barra fishing competition held Saturday 24th October was a lot of fun. The briefing was held at the Whim Creek pub Friday evening with the majority turning up for a feed and a few beers. The late arrivals met up at the Fresh water later that evening. The food and service at the Whim Creek was sensational and a real credit, the staff couldn't have been more helpful.
With a total of seven teams working the creek upstream, downstream and whatever stream the fish did not come easy. A total of two Barra for the day with Damien (Rigger) Bode winning Champion angler with a 74cm Barra and Jordan (Jiggy) Carpenter taking out second spot with a 53cm Barra. Both competitors received a Calcutta 200B reel from Club Sponsor SHIMANO. After a big day on the water, competitors headed back to the fresh water for a swim and a rinse, some of the competitors roughed it and stayed in the Whim Creek accommodation. Saturday night saw another great feed and presentations.
A few teams stayed on and fished the Sunday which turned out to be a lot more productive. Blue Nosed Salmon were pretty thick up to about 65cm and President Scotty dropped a big bucket mouth Barra that would have gone well into the 90's. Big thanks to everyone that had a crack at the Balla Balla Barra fishing comp. As usual the flies were friendly and the heat in the middle of the day was pretty special as well. Thanks James (Dogsy) Dedman for organising the Sponsor Prizes - top job and Travis for the Drone footage.
Cheers Andrew (Carpo) Carpenter

Mackerel Fishing Family Day!
Thanks to all Club Members and Competitors for making it our best Comp yet. The comp attracted over 120 people in 34 boat teams, a great effort and another very successful event by our Club. The day went very well and everyone had a great time which is what we (the club) are all about. Thanks to Weigh Masters Leechy and Dogsy who was also the MC. James for promo on Facebook, getting the Pilbara News and SPONSOR Headleys Rods involved. Big thanks also to SPONSOR JG GRAPHIX, James, Scotty and Carpo for organizing the signs around town and on Anchovy Flats - definitely a winner. Thanks also for the great BBQ by Darnelle, Kel, Scotty and Carpo. We had more interest this year than previously despite the downturn in the economy, a great achievement. My sincere thanks to our SPONSORS and in particular Matt Williams GetAway Outdoors. I look forward to catching up next meeting. Regards Ken MacFarlane.

Weigh Master’s Report
It has been the quietest month so far this season for the Weigh Master with only one fish hitting the scales and therefore, there is not much to report. The one fish that did lose to an angler this month was James (FatBoy) Gorham’s Kawa Kawa (mack tuna). James had already weighed a Mack Tuna this season but he must not have been happy with the score he got from so he decided to upgrade! James presented a 5.07kg Kawa Kawa to the scales, a fish that he beat on 3kg sportfishing tackle. This capture was worth 253 points, an upgrade of 79 points. Luke (Leechy) Leech NBSFC Weigh Master
Unnalise Radley tagged this beast of a Cobia
in perfect glass off conditions earlier in the month.
New Club Member Jacob Crowhurst told Sportsfisher that as soon as he measured and tagged this lovely 40cm Jack. He knew it wouldn’t count in Club
standings. Can you see why not?

SPORTSFISHER OFFICIAL NEWSLETTER OF THE NICKOL BAY SPORTSFISHING CLUB
G’day Sportsfishers! October was another good month on the tag front. A lot of creek species tags were submitted as the water has started to warm up. A few late billfish tags were submitted that has seen Hamish ‘The Hammer’ enter the scoreboard with 4 Sails tagged during a good session on old Party of 5. Toby Mason did a mission out to Glomar Shoals with the family on board ‘Nevermind’ and tagged 2 Blacks and a Sail to see his score points bump up. Unnalise Radley also tagged a nice Black out with Tangles to see her enter the scoreboard. As we kicked off the Year all billfish tags were entered with corresponding points. Having a chat with our Weigh Master, all billfish that are tagged and nominated as a Capture will have the capture points allocated to them but not the billfish tag and release points. This had been incorrectly calculated on my behalf, apologies for that, so you may notice some changes on the leader board with tagged fish for anglers with no accrued points. These fish have been allocated for capture points. With submitting billfish tags / shark tags that are to be submitted for capture points, could the angler please write in bold on the back of the tag card CAPTURE, then there will be no confusion.
There were a lot of ANSA tags submitted this month and Unnalise had been busy tagging some broad bar macks to see her score bump up. Cottrell kicked of the Year with some nice creek species which included a couple of Barra and a couple of Jacks, one solid jack that is currently holding the annual length record at 510mm. Wayne Summers has again hit the creeks and added another couple of barra and a nice thready to his points. Justin Neil handed in a heap of tags with a mix of some Bluewater species and some tags from a few creek sessions, these included some Red Emperors, Coral Trout, Tripletail, Jacks, Barras and a couple of Threadies, one nice Thready of 1030mm that currently holds the annual length award. A few tags from the Balla weekend have filtered through from Toby, Bozzar and Trav to see their names up in the list with some Barra, Jacks and a couple of Blue Nose Salmon.
One nice fish to mention for the month was Luke Leech with a 980mm Barra submitted for the annual length award. Cracker fish mate well done. Bozzar and myself are off to Scott Reef mid next week until the 20th of November so this report was written as off the 30/10/2015 for the standings. Any tags handed in at a later date will be collected and added for next month’s report. During our absence Luke Leech will have the tags if anyone requires any new ones and tags that require handing in can also be given to Luke or emailed through to myself. One quick note to mention, there has been a new electronic copy of our Westag recording sheet issued that is much more detailed. This is in an excel format and can be saved and updated on your computer. We will have a representative from Westag at our next club meeting to go through the new Angler login on the Westag website for tag entry. For now, if anglers have access to a computer, there tags can be uploaded and submitted to myself via email on this new sheet.
Cheers Ryan (RT) Turner & Bozzar.

Longest Barramundi, Longest Threadfin Salmon, Longest Mangrove Jack, Longest Trevally.
Selected tagged fish can be nominated for the Capture section for a predetermined amount of points:
Minimum length 1.3m Fork to lower jaw Hammer Head 500 points Tiger Shark 500 points Marlin 600 points Sailfish 400 points
Tag & Weigh Information, Deadlines & Fine Print:
Tag information must be submitted to tagging co-coordinator maximum 30 days from date of capture to count for club points. Except June Tagging information must be submitted by 1st July.
This also includes any weigh sheets to be included in the Capture section must be handed to the weigh master maximum 30 days from the date of capture for club points. Except June where all information must be submitted by 1st July.
Species indicated with a “*” should be tagged with NSW Fisheries tags only. DO NOT use the ANSA WA tags to tag these species.
There is no restriction on gear type used to capture the fish i.e. 100lb hand line is acceptable for tagging, this is to ensure maximum chance of survival.
It is promoted to tag fish under that of the “minimum length”, as long as the fish has a good chance of survival. The minimum length is only relevant for club points.
Both overall & fork length must be noted on tagging sheets for Threadfin Salmon (King & Blue).
If tagging Black Jewfish it is important that a correct identification is made. There is a particular species that looks very similar that only grows to a short length. This can cause some confusion as they could be misidentified as a juvenile Black Jewfish. These fish should
not be tagged.
