Alsomaking a number of visits was the King Air 200 F-GHGB which is flownby a UK pilot and has connections with Humberside. Visiting on the 8thwas the Ste Jetair Falcon 10 F-GBTI and the Begimmo Nv ConguestOO-KNM. Visiting on the 9th from lleston in Ireland was the Cessna 4018N9146N which may be a new resldent there. Maklng its annual vislt tothe LBA was the Gulfstream M299FB whlch arrived on the l-1th anddeparted on the 2Sthduring v/hich time a number of visits were made toExeter. New on the 13th was the Challenger N45PH which does not appearln the nel, US registratlons up to the end of Hay. Nlght stopplng onthe 14th was Challenger N601HC which is another nerd one and is yet toappear in the ner", registrations. The 15th saw yet another new biz-jetvisiting,this time a Citation VR*CAT which night stopped. This is aCessna 501 c,/n O232 ex VR-CHF and registered in March this year. Alsonoted on the 15th was the Corgi Toys King Air C90 VR-CCT. Nightstopping on the 15th was Boeing 737 A6-AAA of the United Arab EmiratesPrivate Flight Directorate. Passing through en route from Paris toShannon on the l?th was the Navair Inc Gulfstream IV N917W. King Air890 OY-JRO on the 18th belongs to the grandly named Danish AirTransport Leasing K,/S but it used the callsign irDantrans l2l-122"which is less of a nouthfu]I. Moving on to the military we start withthe Islander 2G847 uhich was'rArmy 338rr on the 5th. a ne\.rcomer to theLBA hras the CgA 31683 of the USAF which was (SAM 583" on the 8th whenit brought in VIP's for the ro11 out of the first Slingsby T3A Fireflyfor the USAF contract at Kirb)rmoorside. There was scarcel-y tine to do thls before G-AXDU, a B.12'lPup 2 flew 1ow over the coach to nake a perfect 1and1ng.But even without this bonus the visit to Duxford would have beenworthwhil-e. This ex-RAtr' Station is part of the Imperial War Museum,and is packed with rare, nostalgic exhibits. To list everythlngwould take pages. However, there was a Boeing Flying Fortressbearing its US nilitary number 211981G. To see this monster closeup with 1ts long wingspan and four great engines, made one marve]that it could get into the air, even wj-thout a bomb Load.In contrast there was a small, Gerrnan Messerschmitt rocket poweredinterceptor fighter bearing the Swastika, and the identificatlonnumber 191660. The propellor was so tiny that it looked comical.Sweden was represented by a SAAB JISA DRAKEN fighter which had alogo of three crowns. The Royal Navy was there with a WestLandIflhirlwind helicopter numbered 62. More impressive was an RAFSunderland Flying Boat bearing the identlfication ML796. Also onshow was a blue steel- short range air launched nuclear mi-ssile, ofthe type carried by the RAF.

G-APWJ, a Viscor:nt, was displayj-ng it. Another exhi-bit was aDan Air Comet 4 to which the public were admitted. there were twoseats on one side of the aisle and three on the other. But themost astounding thing about this aj-rliner was the leg room. A sixfoot man could have sprawled out in comfortlHowever, not everytlring in Duxford is stationery, because this lsalso an active airfield. And Jr:ne 25th, 1991 , the clay of the AirYorkshire visit, was rrDuxford Flying Afternoonrt, when somehlstoric aircraft took to the air. But surely prlde of place mustgo to Spitflre I[H4]4 whlch went through 1ts paces, bringing backmemories of the Battle of Britain to those old enough to remember.One other display is especiatly worth menti.oning. It was given bya trio comprisi-ng two biplanes (G-TIIf and G-IIIT) and a monoplane(G-IITI). Their daredevll aerobatics were made even more thrilf-1ng by the smoke pourlng out behind thern; and several tirnes twoof the planes passed so close at high speed that it was zrmazingthey clidn't crash.But Duxford isn't only about aeroplanes. There,s a narrow gaugerailway and, since 1992, a Land trYarfare HaIl containing tanks,other niLitary vehicles and artlllery. And j.f walking isn,t yourstrong poj.nt, don't worryl A people Eover, conslstlng of a roadvehicle pulling trailers, runs a free bus service the fu1l lengthof the site, with stopping places on the way.
