Contrary to belief that the elderly are well looked after in the dusk of their lives, the study has found that 20% of the elderly population in Punjab and Himachal Pradesh are forced to work well after 80 years of age. More than 60% out of these are forced to work because of economic compulsions even as the number of elderly not living with their families because of family conflict has increased. The study, conducted by the United Nations Population Fund, had the project coordinated by the Population Research Centre at the Institute for Social and Economic Change, Bangalore, and the Institute of Economic Growth, Delhi along with the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. A total of 8,792 households were selected and 8,329 household interviews were conducted for the survey. It was found that although the work participation rate declines with age, it is substantial even among elderly of 80 years and above. There are also significant rural-urban differences in the work participation rate. In rural areas around 26% of the elderly are currently working, while about 19% among urban elderly are doing so. Sharp gender differentials in work participation exist with 13% of elderly men and three per cent of elderly women currently participate in the labour market even beyond the age of 80 years. With three out of five households having an elderly head of the family, the elderly headship rate is found to be more in urban areas (64%) than in rural areas (59%). The data indicate that around 76% of the elderly are living with at least one of their children. In other words, a quarter of the elderly do not live with any of their children. The percentage is nearly the same for rural and urban areas. Rising family conflict has been underlined as the main cause for elderly living away from their families or preferring to stay alone. In both Punjab and Himachal Pradesh, 20.5% elderly population has been found working more than six months in a year, more than four hours a day. What is even more worrying is that is that out of this working elderly population, 59% in Himachal Pradesh and 64% in Punjab have been found to be working due to an economic compulsion. Even otherwise, elderly are majorly dependent on their children for finances. About 43% elderly inHP and 37.4% in Punjab are fully dependant on children for money. Earlier today, The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA), and the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) launched the Homebuyers' Road Map. The Road Map is available on CREA's website at crea.ca. In a recent Nanos Research survey1 for CREA, more than 63% of Canadians indicated a "major need" for more information about the financial details of buying a home. That figure rose to 70% for respondents between the ages of 18 and 29. "As REALTORS®, we appreciate that young Canadians and first- time homebuyers are craving more information about the financial details required to purchase a home. The purpose of the Homebuyers' Road Map is to empower consumers with the knowledge, skills and confidence to make responsible financial decisions about one of the largest purchases they will ever make," said Gary Simonsen, CREA's CEO. "We're proud to have collaborated with the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada to develop this guide." Launched to coincide with Financial Literacy Month, the Homebuyers' Road Map is a guide which will help Canadians better understand the home buying process as well as appreciate the importance of negotiating with lenders and researching government programs. "Helping Canadians plan for the future, make sound decisions and ensure the financial security of their loved ones are essential in this increasingly complex world," said Shelly Glover, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance. "Buying a home involves a number of steps and many buyers need some help in understanding the various options available. In order to make the decision that matches their own circumstances and goals, consumers need some money know-how - which is what financial literacy really is," added Ursula Menke, Commissioner of the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC). Sachin Tendulkarneeded more than ever

now: Rahul Dravid

"SACHIN WILL BE DISAPPOINTED WITH THE SHOT HE PLAYEDTO GET OUT IN AHMEDABAD ON A RELATIVELY FLATTERWICKET, AND THEN TO SEE OTHER PEOPLE SCORE RUNS,"DRAVID SAID.

NEW DELHI/BUREAUNEWS: The criticism againstSachin Tendulkar might bemounting rapidly after a stringof poor performances but hisformer India teammate RahulDravid feels the senior batsmanis needed "more than evernow". Tendulkar has been amajor disappointment in theongoing four-Test seriesagainst England which is tiedat 1-1 after the visitorshumiliated the hosts by 10wickets in the second Test inMumbai. "India need him nowmore than ever. At 1-1 in a tightseries, it's going to be veryimportant for senior players tostand up and who better thanSachin to do that," Dravid said.

Tendulkar's poor form hasput question marks over hisplace in the side and formerplayers such as Sunil Gavaskarhave urged him to discuss hisplans with selectors but Dravidfeels the 39-year-old is still verymuch needed by the side. "Ithought he was a little scratchyand looked a little under-prepared against New Zealand. Here, I know it seems strangeto say after he's had threefailures, but he's actually

looking quite good. "He'splayed a couple of straightdrives, he's played a couple ofshots that when I was playingwith him, you knew he wasplaying well if he was playingthose shots," he said.

"He'll be disappointed withthe shot he played to get out inAhmedabad on a relativelyflatter wicket, and then to seeother people score runs,"Dravid said. "Here, he was a bitunlucky: the first ball that reallyspun on the first morning wasthe one that got him. Until thenthere weren't too many ballsspinning. And then he playedfor the spin in the secondinnings and the ballstraightened on a track onwhich every ball was spinning,"Dravid added. Dravid said thecrushing defeat in Mumbaicould turn out to be a blessingin disguise for India as playerswould work harder. "I thinkthat's a blessing in disguisefrom India's point of view. Theymight have to work harder forthe wins but it'll also give theirbatsmen a chance to be able toput up big scores, and to be ableto show they are good playersof spin," he said.

suggest a benchmark for funds held on the basis of which the I-Tdepartment can initiate legal action for tax evasion and tax theft.

Top sources said a benchmark of about Rs five crore is beingmulled for initiating court proceedings against those Indians whosenames have figured on the secret list of HSBC Geneva, supplied toIndia by the French government.

All others below the benchmark amount, the sources said, couldbe penalised under I-T laws and the amount can be realised fromthem by way of raising a comprehensive tax demand.

The sources said a number of individuals or entities who havefigured in these accounts, also searched and probed by the I-Tdepartment, held small balances ranging from few thousands to lakhsof rupees and, hence, a policy has to be made as to how many will beprosecuted and how many penalised under tax theft laws.

"A policy framework will be decided and action would be takenon a case-to-case basis," the sources said. The I-T department, through the finance ministry, has already approached Swiss revenueauthorities for banking data of certain individuals after investigationsshowed some of them reportedly had other accounts under fictitiousnames. The department has already begun a country-wide I-Tassessment of those entities whose names have figured in thesesecret lists. India had obtained data of over 700 HSBC accountsfrom French government channels last year.

Zee News defends its executives, says Jindal influencing copsNEW DELHI/BURAU NEWS : Zee News on Wednesday vehementlydenied all allegations of extortion levelled against its two executivesand said police were being forced to act on the matter under pressurefrom Congress MP Naveen Jindal and his associates. SudhirChaudhary, head of Zee News, and Samir Ahluwalia, head of ZeeBusiness, were arrested here on Tuesday on charges of attemptingto extort Rs 100 crore from Jindal's company in exchange for notfiling news reports linking his firm to the coal blocks allocation.

"Our executives' arrest is illegal. We strongly condemn arrestsof our two executives," Zee News chief executive officer (CEO) AlokAgarwal told reporters at a press conference here. He alleged thatJindal had offered money to Zee journalists.

"Our channel raised fundamental questions about coal blocksallocated to the Jindal group. Jindal's mother pleaded with us to playdown the coalgate," he said. Agarwal alleged that police were beingforced to pursue the matter against them and make illegal arrests.

Jindal last month released a CD which purportedly showedfootage in which the Zee journalists were trying to strike a deal withhis company officials, telling them that their TV news channel wouldnot air negative stories on Jindal Group if the money was paid tothem. Jindal, who is chairman of Jindal Power and Steel Ltd, (JPSL),had earlier claimed that the Zee executives had demanded Rs.20crore for four years and they secretly filmed the meetings. They laterraised the demand to Rs.100 crore for not broadcasting stories against

the company in relation to the allocation of coal blocks, Jindalalleged. JPSL is among the companies named in the Comptrollerand Auditor General's report as one of the beneficiaries of thecontroversial coal blocks allocation. Zee News last month sent aRs 150 crore defamation notice to the Congress MP, who too hadfiled a Rs 200 crore suit against the media conglomerate, claimingthat the TV channel had tried to extort money from his company.

Rs 17L for kindergarten seat inTamil Nadu, parents vie to pay

CHENNAI: P Balram* was particular about the school his daughtershould go to. And he was willing to go to any extent to getadmission there. So, before the school could ask for a donation,he offered to set up a computer lab for 7 lakh. It was an offer theKilpauk school couldn't refuse. Another parent got an admissionfor his child in a school in Mylapore by promising a basketballcourt that cost Rs 17 lakh. It might sound strange, but parents arefinding innovative means to make donations to schools to getseats for their children. Some are willing to shell out several lakhsfor admission to kindergarten in top schools. And this hasredefined capitation fee, which has now morphed into "informedcontributions" and "returnable investments." Educationalconsultant K R Maalathi said parents were willing to cough uphuge money for such "gifts" for additional benefits. "Parents feelthat it not only gets them a seat but goes a long way in promotinggoodwill between students and the school management," she said.

As one school head puts it, "Unlike in other sectors, ineducation the recommendation is for paying more money, not less."

“DONATIONS,” MEANWHILE, HAVE BEEN SHOOTING UP. THEGOING RATE FOR AN LKG OR PRE-KG ADMISSION IN A GOODSCHOOL IN CHENNAI CAN GO UP TO RS 4 LAKH.

Cash sops not for poll gains, Manish Tewari saysNEW DELHI/BUREAU NEWS: The decision on direct cash payoutof subsidies to beneficiaries from Jan 1, 2013 was taken keeping inmind the future of the country, not the next general elections, Unionminister Manish Tewari said on Wednesday. "The general electionswill be held in April 2014. There are still almost two years left forthem to take place. So please do not see this decision through theprism of the 2014 polls. Rather, see it as a way to change the future

of India," the Union minister of state (independent charge) forinformation and broadcasting told reporters. "This scheme is inaccordance with the law. It is an effort to secure the future of thecountry," said Tewari. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Mondayannounced direct cash payout of subsidies to beneficiaries fromJan 1, 2013 while chairing the first meeting of the National Committeeon Direct Transfers.

During the Week of November 5th, I accompanied Prime Minister,Stephen Harper to India. It was an honour to travel to India andrepresent so many of my Indo-Canadian constituents. Throughoutmy visit I grew to understand the importance of culture and traditionin India. The knowledge and experience I gained in India will allowme to better serve the needs of the Indo-Canadian community inBrampton West. What I was not prepared for was the striking beautyof the landscape, the enthusiasm of the cities and the overwhelmingkindness, openness and friendliness of every person I met in India.I was blown away and quickly fell in love with India.

AGRAThe first city we visited was Agra, known for the famous Taj

Mahal. As many already know, the Taj Mahal is one of the Seven

Wonders of the World. It truly is amazing. The grand size and beautyof the Taj Mahal are indescribable; no words justify the feeling ofstanding on the front steps of the Taj Mahal.

CHANDIGARHThe first thing I fell in love with in Chandigarh was the landscape-

the elegant architectural forms with wide tree lined avenues, greenbelts and gardens represent the true modern India, post partition.

Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharla Nehru once said, “Let it be the firstlarge expression of our creative genius flowering on our newlyearned freedom” and a grand expression it is. Chandigarh, to me,represents the India moving forward with a strong economy andgrowing intellect, earning its place among the leaders of the world.

Chandigarh has the most spectacular gardens, the PinjoreGarden and the Rock Garden. I had not seen anything quite like thatbefore in my life. They were stunning. Unlike other Mughal gardens, the seven terraces at Pinjore, instead of ascending, descend into thedistance and achieve an almost magical effect. In the near distance, the purple-green Himalayas seem to rise up sheer over thebattlements of the old garden walls and the white buildings of thelittle hill station of Kasauli in Himachal Pradesh, glow in the settingsun.

Visiting Anandpur Sahib, the birthplace of Khalsa was not onlyinformative but peaceful. The hospitality and patience of the peoplewas greatly helpful. Being able to visit the birthplace of Khalsa wasan honour.

DELHIDelhi reminded me of Ottawa- a professional and governmental

city with years of history. India Gate at night not only gives a boldimpression but has a certain feeling of authority. It does remind oneof the significance of Delhi in India.

When we first entered Humayun’s tomb, the red sandstonestructure reminded me of the Taj Mahal but then when youunderstand the history and time of construction, it all falls into place.

Although the architecture is similar, the story and message behindeach tomb is different and motivating.

Red Fort and Qutub Minar in Delhi tell a story that dates back toMughal rule in India. They are a constant reminder of the rich history ofDelhi. From the Mughals to the British to modern Delhi, Delhi doestruly represent each era of time. It is also a great reflection of manydifferent traditions and norms absorbed by the city. I believe the RedFort and Qutub Minar, both add to the city’s ambiance and culture.

BANGALOREThe weather in Bangalore was perfect; not too cold and not too

hot. The city was preparing for Diwali and I could see the decorationsgoing up, which reminded me of my riding of Brampton West, where allthe Indo-Canadians must have been preparing themselves for Diwali.

The plan to open a new consulate in Bangalore was the icing ontop of the cake. This new consulate is part of Canada’s commitmentto strengthen social relationship with India.

The new consulate is expected to open next summer, and willoffer a full range of consular services to help Canadians in need ofassistance, and visa and immigration services which will enableCanada to attract quality students and immigrants from SouthernIndia and facilitate business travel. In retrospect, I think thehighlights of my trip were touring the Taj Mahal, meeting the PrimeMinister of India, Manmohan Singh, cuisine and the vibrant rich culture andhistory. India was not the first time I had Indian food but it was amazing totaste and enjoy it there. With that being said, I am eagerly looking forward tomy next trip to India, perhaps in January 2013.

Sentences for

Violent Offenders

Canadians deserve to feel safe in their own homes, but whenviolent offenders are allowed to serve out their sentences in thecommunity, Canadians are simply less safe. That’s why wehave been working hard to implement policies that will ensurethat those convicted of violent crimes will be held accountablefor their actions. Our Government has a strong record of putting victims first, getting tough on serious and violent offenders, and keeping ourstreets and communities safe. On September 20, 2011, weintroduced the Safe Streets and Communities Act. This act aimedto fulfil our commitment to “move quickly to re-introducecomprehensive law-and-order legislation to combat crime andterrorism.”On Tuesday of this week, new regulations stemming from thisact came into force, eliminating house arrest as a sentencingoption for serious and violent crimes. Our Government remains committed to keeping our streets andcommunities safe, protecting Canadians and holding offendersaccountable. We, like many Canadians, believe that house arrestshould not be available for offenders of serious crimes like sexualassault, kidnapping and human trafficking. Those who committhese violent crimes will serve their time behind bars, not in thecomfor t of their homes. Those affected by the change in regulations are not individualswho have committed minor offences and are serving conditionalsentences in the community. These are individuals who havecommitted crimes involving serious bodily harm or the use ofweapons; crimes such as sexual assault, kidnapping, humantrafficking or aggravated assault. These are individuals whohave demonstrated that they present a risk to society. The Safe Streets and Communities Act, like my own Bill C-394,is par t of our Government’s plan to keep Canadian families andour youth safe. These new laws will keep individuals with aproven history of violence out of our communities, where theycan no longer victimize their neighbours. As a father, it is reassuring to know that violent offenders will nolonger serve their sentences on house arrest in our communities, and will be properly supervised where they can receive the helpthey need. By helping improve the safety of all Canadians, inpar ticular to the most vulnerable members of society, and fur therenhancing the ability of Canada’s justice system to hold offendersaccountable for their actions, our Government is ensuring thatviolent offenders are off the streets.

The Honourable Ted Menzies , Minis te r of Sta te( F i n a n c e ) ,

and the Honourable Gail Shea, Minister of NationalRevenue, have announced that Canadians will be able

to save an additional $500 in their Tax-Free Savings Account(TFSA) starting in 2013, raising the annual contribution limitto $5,500.

"We are proud to offer these savings on taxes to allCanadians so that they can keep more of their hard-earnedmoney" said Kyle Seeback, Member of Parl iament forBrampton West.

Since the Harper Government made TFSAs available in2009, Canadians have been able to earn tax-free investmentincome on contributions of up to $5,000 per year. AllCanadians - from students to young families to seniors -can earn tax-free income through a range of investmentproducts. TFSAs have become increasingly popular, withapproximately 8.2 million Canadians having opened anaccount and roughly 2.5 million Canadians contributing themaximum amount in 2011.

Some highlighted key features of the TFSA that make ita popular savings vehicle for Canadians are:

A TFSA is available to all Canadians, 18 years andolder;

Any interest, dividends and capital gains earned ina TFSA are not subject to tax;

A TFSA allows you to invest in a number of typesof investments, be it a high-interest savings account, mutualfunds, guaranteed investment certificates, listed securities,or other types of qualified investment products;

Unused TFSA contribution room is carried forwardand accumulates for future years;

Funds available in your TFSA can be withdrawntax-free at any time for any purpose. You can re-contributewithdrawn amounts in the same year only if you haveunused TFSA contribution room. Otherwise, you have towait until the following year;

Income earned in a TFSA and withdrawals do notaffect your eligibility for federal income-tested benefits andcredits; and

Contributions to a spouse's or common-law partner'sTFSA are allowed.

When the TFSA was introduced, the Harper Governmentannounced that the $5,000 annual contribution limit wouldbe indexed to inflation in $500 increments. 2013 will be theyear in which the first $500 increment takes effect, whichmeans more room for Canadians to put funds aside for theirfinancial goals.

To help Canadians take full advantage of this savingsvehicle, the Canada Revenue Agency has up-to-date andcomprehensive information regarding TFSAs on its website.

I encourage all Canadians to take advantage of TFSAsas a valuable way to save for the future and to save on theirtaxes.

For the past three years,Sumit Gill, Kiran Rai, NeeliGrewal and Swapanpreet havebeen driving home theirmessage among Canada's SouthAsian communities throughtheir group 'Nach Balliye'. Theyurge newly-married couples topledge to protect "the unborndaughters".

Now the four girls - bornand brought up in Canada withroots in Punjab - have decidedto celebrate "Lohri Kudiyan di"in Brampton in Ontario provincenext month to mobilize publicagainst female foeticide.

"The motive behindorganizing Lohri for girls is topromote gender equality," saidSumit Gill, founder member of'Nach Balliye'. The groupmembers are contacting NRIfamilies and have launched aspecial campaign to get in touchwith the students of Canadian

Selena Gomez after splitting earlier this month, believes thatbeing "single may be for the best."

According to reports, the 20-year-old actress wants to get backtogether with the 'Baby' hitmaker, TMZ.com reported. However, Bieberhas told his friends that he's unsure, partly because Gomez has beenso erratic, and thinks that they may be better off as friends, thewebsite added.

as the protest returned to thepublic eye for the first time sincehe was briefly hospitalized andtreated with intravenous fluidsbecause of his hunger strike.

Police kept the protestersaway from the sidewalk outsidethe office of Prime MinisterKamla Persad-Bissessar but thegroup spent much of the day inthe street. Kublalsingh said he

will continue his fast untilPersad-Bissessar either halts thehighway extension or agrees toa review of the project thatincludes the effects on theenvironment and several ruralcommunities, something he saysshe agreed to do earlier this year.

"Unless she undertakes tokeep that promise, to do a serioustechnical review with a cost-benefit analysis, a social impactanalysis, hydrological studies, Iwill not put any food or drink intomy mouth," he said. He startedthe hunger strike November 16.He grew increasingly weakbefore he was taken to thehospital, where he said he wasgiven intravenous fluids. Thegovernment, showing apparentconcern for his health, stationedan ambulance near the protestyesterday. He went home inanother ambulance hired by hisfamily. The highway project, whichwill cost more than USD 800million and will connect thesouthern city of San Fernando toone of the country's energy-producing towns, Point Fortin, the

location of a major liquefied naturalgas refinery at the southwesterntip of Trinidad. Opponents wantthe project rerouted because theysay it will damage wetlands anddestroy about 350 homes in ruralcommunities. The prime ministerhas expressed concern forKublalsingh, and hergovernment's health minister metwith him, but she opposes any haltto the project.

"I cannot choose to deprivegenerations of our nation'scitizens of the development whichthe extension of the highwaywould bring," Persad-Bissessarsaid in a speech. Kublalsinghtraces his ancestors to India, asdo many of those in the path ofthe highway project, but he doesnot live in any of the affectedcommunities. He is a lecturer at theUniversity of the West Indies whohas long been an environmentalactivist in the twin-island nation, most prominently in a campaignagainst an aluminum smelterproject that was eventuallycanceled after extensiveprotests.

Want to put more money in your pocket?Five most overlooked year end tax strategies

Minister of State BernierHelps Launch StartupCanada Blueprints

TORONTO/BUREAU NEWS :Canadians who want to take fulladvantage of the various tax credits, deductions and otheropportunities for tax savings, need to act quickly, before year end, says CIBC's tax and estate planning expert, Jamie Golombek. "With2012 drawing to a close and the very busy holiday seasonapproaching, Canadians shouldn't forget tax planning opportunitiesthat may disappear if they don't act before year end," said Mr.Golombek. "There are a number of easy ways for Canadians to reducetaxes that they might otherwise owe - but in many cases you need toact before December 31." Mr. Golombek cites the most overlookedstrategies from his recent report:

Donate to your favourite charityDecember 31 is the last day to make a donation and obtain a tax

receipt for 2012. Many charities offer the ability to donate online, with electronic tax receipts that are generated and emailed to youinstantly. For example, if your total 2012 donations exceed $200,each additional $100 donation in 2012 can get you up to $100 back, depending on your province of residence.

Contribute to an RESP for your child or grandchildThe federal government provides a Canada Education Savings

Grant of 20 per cent on the first $2,500 of annual RESP contributionsper child, which can add up to $7,200 to an RESP during a child'slifetime. If you haven't maximized RESP contributions for yourchildren or grandchildren, you can make an enhanced catch-upcontribution in 2012. If your child turned 15 in 2012 and has neverbeen an RESP beneficiary, December 31, 2012 is your last chance tocontribute to an RESP to create CESG eligibility. For example, bycontributing $2,500 to an RESP, you could get $500 of CESGs addedto the RESP account, usually by the following month.

Pay expenses by year end to be eligible for tax deductions andcredits

There are ways to pay less in taxes - but you must act before December 31Claiming expenses, such as interest on money borrowed for

investing or student loans, daycare fees and children's fitness orarts fees, can all provide benefits at tax time. However you must paythese expenses by the end of the year to realize the tax savings for2012. For example, paying $500 for your children's winter swimminglessons before year end could mean up to $75 in reduced taxes.

Review your investmentsThe end of the year is a good time to review the types of

investments you hold, and the accounts in which you hold them.Investments yielding highly-taxed interest income may be best-suited to RRSPs or TFSAs, while Canadian equities, which cangenerate favourably-taxed dividends and capital gains, may be moresuited to non-registered accounts. If you are planning a TFSAwithdrawal in early 2013, consider withdrawing the funds byDecember 31 instead, so you don't have to wait until 2014 to be ableto re-contribute that amount.

Prepare for retirementThere are a number of tax considerations for those just entering

into their retirement years: If you turned 65 in 2012 and have not yet applied for Old Age

Security benefits, remember that retroactive benefits, which can beworth over $6,500, can only be claimed within a limited time. Toreceive those benefits, you should apply as soon as possible. Ifyou turned 71 in 2012, you have until December 31 to make any finalcontributions to your RRSP and convert it into a RRIF or registeredannuity. "These tips are some of the most commonly overlooked, easy ways you can act now to benefit from tax savings when youfile your tax return next spring," says Mr. Golombek. "But keep inmind that tax planning is a year-round affair. Speak to your accountantor tax advisor well in advance of tax filing season to get moreinformation on how to reduce your taxes."

Tories and NDP hold on to seats in tight byelections

The Conservative Party won two of three federal byelectionsMonday night, holding on to its seats in Calgary Centre and Durham,Ont., while the NDP kept its seat in Victoria. None of the ridings hadbeen expected to change party hands, though two of them turnedinto close races. NDP candidate Murray Rankin won in Victoria, holding off a surprising challenge from the Green Party's DonaldGalloway. Rankin won with 37.2 per cent of the vote to Galloway's34.3, in a race that seesawed throughout the night. "We knew thiswould be a tough fight," said federal NDP Leader Tom Mulcair, whowas on hand in Victoria to congratulate the newest member of hiscaucus. The NDP is a party at the centre of Canadian life, and onethat is on the move, Rankin said. "I see the faces of a great nationalparty, steadfast in our determination to build a better Canada." InCalgary Centre, the Conservative Party held on to what hastraditionally been one of its safest ridings in the country. Torycandidate Joan Crockatt won with 36.9 per cent of the vote to LiberalHarvey Locke's 32.7 per cent. "Conservative support in Calgary Centreremains strong and growing," the beaming victor maintained afterarriving to a cheering throng at her campaign headquarters. "It was anail biting evening but I'm a new candidate, I'm not an incumbent andbyelections are always challenging for a majority government."Byelections do tend to be hard on sitting governments, but CalgaryCentre wasn't supposed to be a problem for the Harper Conservatives. The riding hadn't seen a three-way race since Reformers andProgressive Conservatives were fighting for the right to roast a Liberal

in the early 1990s. Locke's second-place finish matched the Liberalparty's 1993 high-water mark in Calgary Centre.

Quoting a line from the Leonard Cohen song "Anthem" -- "Thereis a crack in everything; that's how the light gets in" -- Locke said, "Ithink we made a crack." The combined conservative vote CalgaryCentre hadn't fallen below 50 per cent since 1972. But Crockatt's vocalsupport for the upstart Wildrose party in the last Alberta electionappeared to divide the local conservative base, with some openlydefecting to support Locke.

"I think that the question for me as a Liberal that has beenanswered tonight is can a Liberal run competitively in Calgary and theanswer is unquestionably, yes." It seemed the Greens' Chris Turnerwas the deciding factor, with a strong showing that likely took votesaway from the Liberals in a riding that's been painted Tory blue sincethe riding was formed in 1968. "We were defeated at the polls, but wedid not lose anything today," Turner said in a statement. Turner'sstrong campaign may have been aided in the final stretch by Liberalgaffes elsewhere.

First, Liberal MP David McGuinty was quoted calling AlbertaMPs "shills" for the oil industry and suggesting they "go home" andrun for town council if they want to be so parochial. Then a November2010, French-language interview by Justin Trudeau, the Liberalleadership heir apparent, surfaced in which he stated that "Canadaisn't doing well right now because it's Albertans who control ourcommunity and socio-democratic agenda." Trudeau apologized butnot before federal Conservatives had a field day, stalling Liberalmomentum in Calgary Centre and making the Green option -- and awelcome Liberal-Green vote split for Crockatt -- more viable.

Martha Hall Findlay, another Liberal leadership hopeful who, likeTrudeau, spent time in the riding during the byelection, said Mondaythat perceptions of Calgary's political uniformity are changing. "I'vebeen involved with Calgary long enough to know it's not somethingthat's all of a sudden changed," she said.

"I think what has changed is that there is a sense that maybethere's an opportunity for a representation that actually reflects whoCalgarians are." Conservative Erin O'Toole was the runaway winnerin Durham, Ont., retaining the Tory seat in the riding northeast ofToronto with 50.7 per cent and all polls reporting. The seat had beenheld by onetime Conservative MP and cabinet minister Bev Odabefore she resigned in July under a public uproar about her ministerialexpenses. O'Toole said Oda's spending controversies weren't a majorconcern for voters he met while campaigning. "That came up lessand less as we got our message out and as people got to know me asa candidate and realized I'm from this community," said O'Toole, whose father John is a member of the Ontario legislature.

Football to 'absolutely' remaina part of Rob Ford’s future

Toronto Mayor Rob Ford isfighting for his job at City Hall, but he has vowed to"absolutely" keep on coachinghigh school football no matterwhat. "I'm not going to stopcoaching these kids," Ford toldreporters after the Don BoscoEagles lost the Metro Bowl onTuesday night, by a score of 28-14. "They’re fantastic, I’m notgoing to turn my back on thesekids." The Eagles lost the gameto a team from Newmarket, Ont.,the Huron Heights Warriors, who had made it to the MetroBowl on two prior occasions, butnever walked away with a victoryin the big game until Tuesday.Ford said the loss was tough forhim and his players. But hecredited the Huron Heightssquad with being the better teamon the field on Tuesday. Bothteams had been undefeated

during their run to the MetroBowl, which took place at RogersCentre as the final game of a fullday of high-school football. Thefirst half of the Metro Bowl wasrough for Don Bosco fans, as theteam fell behind by a score of 21-0. The way Ford saw it, his teamlost the first half and won theremainder of the game. "Wemade a couple of big mistakesearly in the game. You cannot getdown in a championship thatearly by that much," he said. Astwo university football stafferswatching the game on thesidelines put it, turnovers were“killing” the Don Bosco Eaglesin the first half.

In the stands, those rootingfor Ford’s Etobicoke-basedEagles banged together green-and-yellow, inflatablethundersticks, while the Warriorsbrought their own thundersticks

and a large contingent ofcheerleaders to the RogersCentre.

A man who identifiedhimself as Huron Heights teacherChristopher Pettit brought out asign near the end of the gamethat read "REFS MUST BEPINKOS."

Asked to explain themeaning of his sign, Pettit toldCBC News that he disagreedwith the mayor criticizing hispolitical opponents as "leftwing." Pettit said he alsodisagreed with the call fromCoun. Doug Ford, the mayor'sbrother, for people to come downto the Rogers Centre to supportthe mayor, which the HuronHeights teacher said politicizeda high-school footballchampionship.

"That’s a joke," Pettit said. However, Pettit did say he

appreciated the mayor’s effortsto coach football.

Ford had many supportersat the game, several telling CBCNews that they stood behindhim. "I wish more mayors wouldget off their ass and dosomething," said one man whospoke to CBC News on Tuesdayevening. The mayor'sinvolvement in football has beencovered closely by the media thisfall, to the point where DougFord recently questioned "whatthe media is going to chase himon when football season is overwith." The Metro Bowl came justa day after a judge ruled the Fordhad broken the MunicipalConflict of Interest Act whenspeaking and then participatingin a February council vote.

Furthermore, the rulingdeclares that Ford should beremoved from office, an orderthat is to take effect 14 days fromMonday. Ford has said he willappeal and, on Tuesday, heapologized to those who don’tlike the way he handled hisconflict-of-interest situation.

"Looking back, maybe, Icould have expressed myself ina different way," Ford said in aprepared statement.

Canada says still examiningoptions on CNOOC bid

OTTAWA/BUREAU NEWS: The Canadian government is stillmulling its options as deadlines near on two proposed foreigntakeovers of domestic energy companies, but an official offeredno clues on when or how Ottawa would announce the hotlydebated decisions. Andrew MacDougall, spokesman for PrimeMinister Stephen Harper, did not comment on a report that thefederal government might want China's CNOOC to sell the 7 percentstake that takeover target Nexen Inc holds in the large Syncrudeoil sands joint venture, because fellow Chinese company Sinopechas a 9 percent stake in it. "The government is examining itsoptions," he said by email. The Conservative government is tryingto balance the need for foreign investment to develop naturalresources with concern that China and other countries could snapup a big chunk of the energy sector, and that state-owned firmsmight not play by free-market rules.

Ontario law that ousted Rob Ford now under scrutinyThe Ontario law that forced Toronto Mayor Rob Ford out of office is now under scrutiny, having beencalled a Draconian and unfair law that offers punishment that doesn't fit the crime. Ontario SuperiorCourt Justice Charles Hackland, the same judge who presided over Ford's case, called the MunicipalConflict of Interest Act (MCIA) "a very blunt instrument that's attracted justified criticism." In 2010,Ford used his status at the time as a city councillor to raise money for his football charity, Toronto'sIntegrity Commissioner reported. The commission requested that Ford pay back the sum of the $3,150raised, but he refused. Ford was found to be in a monetary conflict of interest, even though he did notprofit from the money directly. The issue then came before city council and on Feb. 7, the mayor waspart of a council vote that sought to remove his duty to pay that sum. The act does not allow the personinvolved in the conflict of interest to discuss the matter, so the fact that Ford spoke and voted on theissue at council went against the law.

‘Kasab hanging mayaffect Pak trial’

ISLAMABAD/BUREAU NEWS : While the trial of those accusedof masterminding the 26/11 Mumbai attacks continues in fits andstarts, the hanging of Ajmal Kasab may have a negative impacton the Rawalpindi trial, warn legal experts. “In the absence ofpressure from the Pakistani government, suspects may be let offthe hook,” said a government official, requesting anonymity.Refuting the rumours, interior minister Rehman Malik said thatthe government will not let anyone derail the process.

Currently, mastermind Zaki-ur Rehman Lakhvi and six othersare facing an in-camera trial being heard by the Anti TerrorismCourt (ATC) at the Adiala Jail in Rawalpindi. They have beencharged with training, execution, handling, abetment, conspiring, financing and commanding the Mumbai terror attacks. WhileLakhvi has been accused of planning the attacks, four others —LeT’s communications expert Zarar Shah, Abu al-Qama, HamadAmin Sadiq and Shahid Jamil Riaz — have been termed asfacilitators, managers of funds and helping in locating hideoutsfor the attackers in Rawalpindi. Recent statements by five CIDinspectors who testified against the perpetrators is a step in theright direction, say observers. “The evidence that has beencollected is being presented in court,” said legal expert MuhammadAfridi. This also implies that the Pakistan government has decidedto move ahead with the trial after years of inactivity. “We need tosee more progress, more testimonies,” said political analyst TalatMasood. So far, Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA)has identified 20 others as suspects involved in the planning andexecution of the attacks. The FIA says it has now gathered thephotographs of all these suspects involved directly or indirectlyin the Mumbai attacks. According to report, these terror suspectshad provided logistical and monetary support to the 10 gunmenwho attacked Mumbai. The statements suggest that the Pakistanigovernment has investigated the charges made by their Indiancounterparts, say officials. Rehman Malik insisted that it is wrongto suggest that Pakistan is not interested in bringing the guilty tojustice. He added that the process was complicated.

Square or oval? Patterned or plain? Brightly hued, subdued orsomewhere in between?

The myriad choices in pattern, style, colour, fabric and size, notto mention price, can make buying an area rug rather anxietyprovoking. Thankfully, there are a few guidelines that will take someof the confusing guesswork out of choosing a rug, and put somefun into shopping for one.

The lowdownon buying rugsIf sophistication and

innovativeness is the extraedge you want to add to

your home decor, what betterthan use a cocktail of the coloursblack and white to decorate yourabode.

The two colours symboliseclass in two different contexts;but a punch of the two can createsuch simplistic yet elegantimpression. And to add to this,

there's also that element of dramathat one can't give away whenthere's a blend of black andwhite. - Using black and white todecorate the flooring and tocolour of small rooms is the mostbasic one can do. For instance, you can go for black flooring foryour bathroom, and then use thebathroom fittings in white. Thisgives it a perfect look.

- Walls, if done well, enhance the look of every house.Paint your walls black and white.Either go for a proportional 3:1

How about a black& white home?

look by painting three wallsblack and one wall white, or gowith diagonal walls painted in thecontrast colours. Stripes in blackand white or spraying blackpaint over white walls are othersyou can opt for.

- You could also paint thewalls white and then use blackphoto frames or wall hangingson the same wall to add charm.

- Tiles and floor paper in the

combination of black and whitelook great. The checkered onesmight seem out of style, but arestill elegant. Use tiles lined withthe contrast colours, this way itlooks a little less dramatic thanthe one before. - Decorate yourdesk or tables in the black-whitecombo. Spread a black tablecloth and display all-whiteobjects on the table. Other waysare to use furnitures withcomplementing shades against ablack and white combinationwall. This also adds modishness.

DOING UP YOURSTUDY YOUR WAYEveryone wants a room of one's own. No, not the kind that

Virginia Woolf had referred to but a small, quiet room whereyou can spend some time with your favourite books away

from the madness of the world outside. For many, reading isrecreational. Given a choice, everyone would want to have that littlespace in the house to do what you like the most without any speckof distraction. Having a study at homes and apartments is a rareluxury, thanks to space constraints. However, it is not impossible."A study or an office space in home should be a cosy corner that isrelatively tucked away from the on-goings in the house especiallyaway from the television," says Shweta Kaushik, a multi-disciplinarydesign consultant based in Mumbai.

There are umpteen things that go into planning and decoratinga study room - from the colour and kind of furniture to the allotmentof space and so on. Below are a few ideas that you may implementwhile doing up your own study at home:

DecorAmbience is the foremost important thing to be taken care of

while decorating your study. The comfort level of the room rests inyour hands.

Casual setting: Do up your reading corner with a laid-back andrelaxed theme in mind. Throw a few bean bags, cushions and sittingmats on the floor. Get a low, wooden coffee table where you canplace your computer or laptop. A bright coloured rug will help addmore drama to the already informal setting. For newspapers andmagazines, pick multi-coloured book holders that will further take away theseriousness of a conventional study room. Not to mention, pick acontemporary design for the bookshelf and stack all your favourite books.Formal setting: Serious work needs serious atmosphere. A large bookshelf isa must for such setting, especially the one that has glass doors. Place yourbooks neatly on the shelf to give it an organised look. A smaller bookshelfcan be placed beside it to store all your stationery. A dark wooden table anda chair to go along with it will complete the look. Ensure that the table hassufficient drawers where you can store important documents. Also, arrangement of equipments like printers and routers can be neatly doneup using wire managers that help reduce clutter.

LightingThe role of lights while you read or work is vital. You don't want

your study to be too bright or too dim therefore choosing the aptlighting can be tricky.

Hrithik hasreportedly charged a jaw-dropping amount of Rs 30 crore fromFox Star Studios, the producers of his next Siddharth Ananddirectorial - the official remake of Hollywood hit Knight And Daystarring Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. And this is the highest

amount any actor has charged up front till date. The last time anystar came close to this was Salman Khan, who charged Rs 27crore for Ek Tha Tiger. Apparently, the actor who is currentlycompleting his home production Krrish 3 with director daddyRakesh, took the decision after the runaway success ofAgneepath earlier this year. Though the production house andHrithik chose to remain tightlipped about the Knight And Daydeal, several trade experts and analysts confirmed Hrithik's pricehike off the record. In fact trade analyst Amod Mehra opined, "Sowhat if Hrithik is charging Rs 30 crore for the film? I think it's lesscompared to what he gives in to his projects." According to asource from the trade, there are only a handful of actors who areconsidered for solohero projects these days. And most of them(namely, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Salman Khan and AkshayKumar) have a profit-sharing model of remuneration. "Producersoften want the top four or five actors. And this is the price youpay for them," said Mehra and added, "The business of cinemahas grown with time. And if one wants to recover the cost ofmaking a film, they need one of these big stars and pay them whatthey demand. They justify the price."

NEW DELHI/BUREAU NEWS: Swashbuckling opening batsmanVirender Sehwag will become India`s ninth cricketer to play 100 Testswhen he walks onto the field at Mumbai`s Wankhede Stadium Fridayin the second cricket Test againstEngland. In the 99 Test matches hehas so far played, the 34-year-oldamassed 8,448 runs at an averageof 50.89 and a staggering strike rateof 82.45 to boot -- amazing figuresfor a Test batsman. The Delhi batsman has scored 23hundreds over the last 12 years, including four double centuries andtwo triple centuries with a highestof 319 scored against South Africaat Chennai in March 2008. That washis second triple ton, the first (309)being against Pakistan at Multan in 2004. The knock against the Proteasincluded 42 boundaries and five sixes and came at a rollicking strike

him the title of `Sultan of Multan.` These two big ones putthe `Nawab of Najafgarh` in elite company as one of theonly four batsmen to have scored two triple centuries. Theothers are cricket`s demi-god Don Bradman, batting legendBrian Lara and destructive West Indian Chris Gayle.Sehwag, who made his first-class debut as a bowler whowas a handy bat lower down the order, was moved to thetop by skipper Sourav Ganguly at Lord`s in 2002 to find aplace for him in the side as he could not have fitted in themiddle-order. This reluctant change came about after hebecame the 11th Indian to score a hundred on debut battingin the middle-order against South Africa in Bloemfonteinin 2001. In his first Test as an opener, Sehwag struck abelligerent 84 and he came to stay as an opener, though he

There is global compassion shortage: Anil Kapoor

Many years back, I was with the Dalai Lama on the sameflight. I was at that time reading the script of my film

'Armaan' — in which my role required me to be compassion-ate. On seeing the Dalai Lama, I could not resist taking his

blessings. When I got his blessings, I secretly felt that Iwould win a National and Filmfare award for that film.

For the longest time, I have shown compassion towards I,me, myself. Forget my neighbhours, friends and least of all, animals, I could not even remember my children's birthdays.

The person who shook me out from my self-indulgence was mywife Sunita. She showed me the mirror and asked me if what I wasdoing made me happy. I said no. I am tired and miserable and thatstarted my process of discovering compassion. My first step wasreading about people who have led a compassionate life. And it isduring this time, I read about Gandhiji and decided to produceGandhi My Father.

Mahatma Gandhi said, "There is always enough for everyman's need but never enough for any man's greed. Today, there isso much talk about global food, land and water shortage. Butwhat we really have is global compassion shortage. He also saidthat the greatness of a nation can be judged by the way its animalsare treated. According to a United Nations report, the livestockindustry is the single largest contributor to global warming; largerthan factories and automobiles. The amount of water that goesinto the production of one hamburger is equivalent to the amountof water you use for bathing for six months. Globally, we produceenough food to feed 10 billion people against a population of 7billion. No one would sleep hungry; forget about dying ofstarvation. Yet, tens of thousands of children do because a largepart of this grain is used to feed cows and chickens which form apart of a non-vegetarian's diet. "

Movie Review: A much-awaited film released amidst a lot ofbuzz, 'Life of Pi', is thought-provoking too. It makes you debate theexistence of God and ponder over human values. In a way, that is thecrux of the film, as Ang Lee sets out to convey this message throughhis protagonist Pi Patel, in a visually powerful and aesthetic film. Ina poignant, yet, simply told story, of animal instinct vs intrinsic

Item songs boost career inindustry, says Neha Dhupia

'Life of Pi' is soulful andthought-provoking'Life of Pi' is soulful andthought-provoking

human values oftrust andfriendship, whichinvoluntarily tugsat your heartstrings, Lee seamlessly amalgamates God's threecreations - man, animal and nature.

Pi is crestfallen as he witnesses his companions, the zebra, hyena, an orangutan, and many more gradually lose their fight forsurvival and he is left with Richard Parker, a Royal Bengal Tiger, ashis sole companion. Pi, who seeks a safe shore after the ship-wreck,is actually in search for answers to several deeper questions.

The 17-year-old Pi's trials and tribulations with Richard Parker,on a 26-foot life raft, after he loses his entire family in a storm aboardthe Japanese freight ship en route to Canada, take up the maximumscreen time. But as a viewer you're not complaining. Engrossing anda visual indulgence, you enjoy every moment, save a few, stretchedwith cinematic liberty and fantasy.

There is a right balance of drama and brilliant visual effects asPi's struggle unfolds as a never-ending saga on screen. Lee'sdepiction of the relationship between Pi and Richard Parker, subtlyteaches us several lessons.

When in Pondicherry, as the owner of the zoo, Pi's father hadgiven him a graphic lesson of how "Animals will always be Animals."But the humane young Pi could not readily accept it. The truth in hisfather's statement rings clear, when at the end of their ordeal, RichardParker, having reached his habitat, moves ahead, without casting asecond glance in Pi's direction. Although Pi does not term this act as"ungrateful", it haunts Pi, leaving an indelible scar on his mind. Theentertainment value may be low during parts of Pi's voyage, but Leecompensates for it in ample measure by the rich technical excellencehe uses. Whether it is the turbulence of the storm, or the flying fish orinnumerable meerkats lining an island, Lee holds you completely.

Suraj Sharma, as an adolescent Pi, steals the thunder from all otherveteran actors, in an honest and spontaneous portrayal. Irrfan is flawlessas a narrator and older Pi, reliving his early days in Pondicherry, andnarrating his ordeal on the Pacific. The teary-eyed Pi seeking meaningsin Richard Parker's betrayal is touching. Tabu as the mother effortlesslysails through her role, but it is her husband, Adil Hussain, whose true-to-life delineation as the owner of the zoo, conversant with life's lessonsand eager to have his sons imbibe those, is convincing. Ayush Tandon, the youngest Pi, is adorable and confident. It is Lee's film all the way, without a doubt, but director of photography Claudio Miranda andproduction designer David Gropman deserve a special mention for themarvel they have together created. The animation has been cleverlyintegrated, giving it a real feel. The screenplay by David Magee, basedon a novel by Yann Martel, may have its own interpretations of religion, with which one may not agree. But, the life's lessons taught are trulyuniversal. And that is what Lee has beautifully encapsulated in "Lifeof Pi". "A soulful film with a universal appeal" is after all what AngLee set out to make.

You have a strong connect with South as you were born in Kerala?Well, my connection with South India has been amazing. I was

You went on to do bold films like Julie and Sheesha, but laterswitched over to performance-oriented roles with films like DelhiiHeights, Mithya, Phas Gaye Re Obama...

I'm interested in the job I do and I'm interested in doing filmsthat really take me and my career a long way. Through my choice offilms, I'm sending out the message that the script is important to me.It has to be so interesting that on hearing it, I should just jump upand say — Yes! I wanna do it! More than anything else, I thinkIndian cinema is going through a great time andphase. And it's great to see out-of-the-box ideasin Bollywood these days, where there's workfor everyone.

But some of your last releasesdidn't do well at the box-office. Evenyour recently-released filmRush failed at the box office...

Firstly, I think it'sgot a lot to do withthe timing of thefilm. Maybe, peopleweren't ready forthat kind of a film.Secondly, I don'treally want to blameanybody.

I just move on.You don't sitaround and blamepeople for thefailure.

forbidden fruitactually created thetension Twilight wasall about. Thatexplains the lack ofdrama in the seriesfinale, Breaking Dawn-Part 2. Edward and Bella are finally married, she's a vampire now and they've done 'it' without either gettingbitten to death - plus, they have a baby daughter and a home that'sfloor-waxed bliss - but laden with so much fulfillment, the finalelacks life or zip. The plot features the Cullen family standing aboutlooking adoringly at new bloodsucker Bella shattering tree trunkswith her hands, then clustering around her and baby Renesmee asthe Vultari gather menacingly.

The latter have been misinformed that the child is an Immortal -an undying vampire that kills entire communities - and some gorytime-travel happens where medieval Vultari fling Immortal babiesonto fires, before ripping their mothers' heads off. Renesmee mustbe protected and all the Cullens' family friends - drunken vampiresfrom Ireland, loincloth-clad Brazilian wonders, water-controllingTurkish-types, even some vintage Euro-trash - join forces.

There's potential for exciting drama here but Breaking Dawn:Part 2 fades before it even begins, struggling somewhere betweenthe now-fatigued Ed-Bella romance, stagey acting, hilariouslyhackneyed lines ("You guys look so good together,") and thatStewart clenched-lip grimace. As werewolf Jacob, Lautner triesinjecting life and soul into the party - and obligingly takes his shirtoff too - but with the rest of the cast really acting like zombies, hisefforts don't make much impact. Just like the chill Sheen as villainAro tries to inject, the Vultari instead resembling an odd bunch thatdidn't make the grade at Hogwarts and now skulks about sulkilysucking blood. Twilight fans will undoubtedly troop the theatres forthe finale but it's not a fitting end to such quintessentially Americandrama, all folklore and fantasy, sexiness and suburbia. As BreakingDawn-Part 2 finally closes, you're left wishing you'd been bitten somuch harder.

NO ONE LIKES BOWLINGAT VIRU: WARNE

cricketNever dreamt of gettingin the 200 club: SwannOn the second day of the Mumbai Test, Graeme Swann

became only the second England spinner to get to 200 Testwickets. In the process he claimed the last three Indian

wickets to keep their first-innings total to 327. Swann has come along way from the time he made his international debut in 2000 as aenthusiastic but at times, seemingly arrogant, 21-year-old. Today,he is arguably the best classical off-spinner in the world andEngland's major weapon to get to the pinnacle of Test cricket.

On achieving the historic milestone, Swann admittedhe didn't expect his Test career to flourish thus, whenhe made his debut in 2008. "Five years ago Iwouldn't have dreamed of taking 200 wickets,"he said. "I am absolutely over the moon with theway my career has panned out. The change atthe top has come just at the right time for me, and ithas been a great four years, I have enjoyed every minute."

The England off-spinner got to the magic number whenhe dismissed his Indian counterpart, Harbhajan Singh inIndia's first innings. And as if to celebrate his achievement,Swann followed it up with the wicket of Cheteshwar Pujara, who was undefeated in the series till then.

Pujara, who scored 135 in that innings, had amassed382 runs from three innings - including the two in theAhemdabad Test - batting for 16 hours and 55 minuteswithout being dismissed. It was apt that England's bestbowler in the series so far, got him out.

"Pujara has been the stand-out batsman forIndia so far," Swann said of the young Indianbatsman. "He uses his feet very well and he playsthe ball on the merit. The runs he scored speakfor themselves. It was nice to finally dismiss him.

"It doesn't normally take three innings of aTest series to get a man out but we have done itnow so hopefully that has taken the finger out ofthe dough. He has got a game plan that worksfor him. He doesn't hit the ball in the air and playsit along the ground. He is a fine player and he isin good form at the moment," Swann said.

Before Swann wiped the Indian lower-orderoff, it was his fellow spinner, Monty Panesar whorocked the hosts with a five-wicket haul. Swannwas particularly chuffed for the left-arm-spinner.

"Monty bowled magnificiently yesterday. It was great to see. I am a big advocate of

playing with two spinners. I love playing with Monty. I grew up inNorth Hampton when he was first starting out and I just love it whenhe takes a wicket," he said, before describing the joy on Panesar'sface after dismissing Sachin Tendulkar on Day 1 of the Test. "That facelike a man possessed when he got Sachin Tendulkar out yesterday - Ihave never seen a man so wound up like this one. He is brilliant,"Swann said. With both India and England deciding to add a spinner totheir respective attacks for the Test, it was expected that the wicket at

the Wankhede Stadium would deteriorate rather quickly. However, as Alastair Cook (87*) and Kevin Pietersen(62*) have shown, it isn't the crumbing dust-bowl itwas predicted to be.

"It's a kind of wicket if you get set on, it's goodfor batting, even though it has pace and bounce.

Once you get the rhythm of batting on this pitch, it's anice wicket to bat on. We were lucky yesterday that

Monty kept picking wickets every 45-50 minutesand you get a new man at the crease. That slows

the run rate and it makes it harder to get set.The only guy who got set for India yesterday

was Pujara. It showed that when he was inthere for time, he was tricky to get out.

"I have quite liked bowling on thispitch. It is obviously better to bowl spinon than the one we had in the first Testas this one has got a lot more bounce.Last week, it brought the left arm intothe game a lot more because the ballwas keeping low and so lbw is much

more dangerous way to get them out. When there is more bounce, the lbw is

not so threatening throughout the innings. We are used to wickets with bounce than what

we had last week," he said while assessing theWankhede wicket.

If Pujara has held the Indian batting together in theseries so far, it is their captain,Alastair Cook who has led Englandfrom the front. After scoring amarathon 176 in Ahmedabad, Cookhas now put England in a decentposition, reducing the first-inningsdeficit to 149 with eight wickets inhand.

FORMER Australia leg-spinnerShane Warne who is in the cityto commentate on the secondTest between India and Englandlauded Sachin TendulkarVirender Sehwag whileaddressing the media on the eveof the Test match.

While speaking about theIndian opener who has thecourse of matches with hisprolific run-scoring over theyears he said, "To play 100 Testmatches you have to have a lotof things going for you outsidethen just magical talent, being avery good player, you have tohave commitment dedication,[make] sacrifices, and beprepared to play for long periodsof time. So to see Viru play his100th Test is fantastic. He is agood guy. He is the mostdangerous batsman in the world. No one likes bowling to him. Iam happy for him. I know a lot ofpeople doubted him when hefirst came into the side. He hasbeen through a slump but it isgreat to see him back andsmashing the [oppositionbowling] attack. He is great towatch and I wish him the best."

Backing Australia's decisionto confer Sachin Tendulkar withthe membership of 'Order ofAustralia', Warne who has beenat the receiving end of Tendulkar'sheroics with the bat said, "I thinkSachin should have the honour ofevery country,"

"Whatever country wants togive Sachin stuff, they should giveit to him because he deserves it. Iwas proud of Australia torecognise that and give Sachinthat honour. It was fantastic to see.Hopefully, mine is next," he added.

Speaking about the muchdiscussed issue of Tendulkar'sretirement, Warne said, "Sachinshould go on as long as he wants. He should play as long ascontinues to score runs, which he

seems to do. He can pay as longas he wants and I hope he plays5000 (test matches) because I amnot bowling anymore," he stated.

While on the subject of hisarch rival on the field and a friendoff it, Warne mentioned that the"nightmare" comment which hemade 14 years ago was in a lightervein. He said, "My saying I havenightmares about Sachin, that wasa joke. I think of other things in mydreams."

Warne who has played in theIndian Premier League as the

captain and coach of RajasthanRoyals said, "There are someyoung and talented players[around in India]. You have YusufPathan and [Ajinkya] Rahane and[Ravindra] Jadeja. We had a lot ofgood young players [in RR and],to try and mould them as captainand coach was thoroughlyenjoyable."

"The IPL has helped to giveIndia some depth in cricket andthere is Pathan and Jadeja someof the good players around. Indiais in pretty good shape. There arequick bowlers around [like][Umesh] Yadav [who has] bowledwell, has pace and he can be ahandful. He is a good bowler."

Speaking about theyoungsters in India that who areslated to take Indian cricketforward Warne said, "Pujara isfantastic. Virat Kohli, has turned

himself [around]. I remember whenwe played against him inBangalore in the first year in IPLwe bowled at him short and thewhole series everyone did that[because] he couldn't play theshort ball. The key is, in the last12-18 months he has becomeone of the top players in theworld [with] the way he goesabout it. He is confident, he isstylish, he is good to watch andhe is aggressive. He has turnedinto a serious player"

He further added, "You

have got Rahane. He is a goodplayer he can bat anywhere in thetop order when you needsomebody to come in, he isready to go. It is nice to seeYuvraj [Singh] back [in theteam]."

Speaking about the youngIndian spin duo of, off-spinnerRavichandran Ashwin and left-arm spinner Pragyan Ojha hesaid, "I think Ashwin's flight, his variations, his consistency, his accuracy is very good. Ojhagets a good turn on the ball. Ithought he was pacing ballslow and traditional left arm spinwas nice to see."

"I always thought the bestcombination was to get one bowlerbowling off spin and the otherbowling leg spin. One turning [theball] into the batsman and oneturning away.

MSD rules out inclusionof third spinner

When talking about India's recent Test wins at home, themention of their spinners is mandatory. R Ashwin andPragyan have forged what looks like a potentially long

match-winning par tnership on home soil, their latest exploit to-gether being 13 wickets in the first Test against England, inAhmedabad. Given the spinners' success against the England bats-men, there are calls of going into the second Test with three ofthem. But on the eve of the Mumbai game, MS Dhoni made it clearthat India will stick with the bowling attack of two pacers and twospinners. "We're looking for the 2-2 combination as it gives a bet-ter balance to the side," he said. "Also, you don't know whetheryou're going to bowl or bat first. Generally the first day wicket ispretty good. In such case, when there's no turn for the spinnersand the ball is not stopping, it gets difficult for them to stop thebatsmen from scoring freely," he said. Explaining fur ther his strat-egy of going in with two quicker bowlers, Dhoni said the condi-tions in Mumbai suit the pacers more than most of the venues inIndia. "The fast bowlers will definitely get some swing hereand as the game progresses the wicket may dry down. If theball is maintained properly the pacers wil l come back intoaction with reverse swing. "Also, this wicket generally has abit more bounce than some of the other wickets in the country.I think the fast bowlers' role will be crucial," he said.Although the combination will remain the same, India's bowl-ing attack might change for the second Test. Umesh Yadav, who bowled his hear t out in Ahmedabad, is down with a soreback. "Umesh is doubtful for this Test. Since we play with twopacers and two spinners, I don't think we can take a risk withhim. So, he will, most likely, miss this Test," the Indian captainrevealed.Known for keeping his playing XI a secret until the toss, Dhonislightly hinted that Ishant Sharma might be preferred over AshokeDinda for the Test. While India will have to make a forced changein the fast bowling department, Dhoni confirmed he will not breakthe Ashwin-Ojha pair."Bhajji pa (Harbhajan Singh) will have to wait for his Test," Dhonisaid. "Everyone gets a chance. Ashwin and Ojha are doing reallywell right now. We're looking forward to this Test to see how theyfair in conditions that will be slightly different. There will be someextra bounce for them which I'm sure the spinners love."Of late Dhoni has been extremely critical of the wickets that aredished out for Test matches in India. He has, time and again, advo-cated for pitches that assist the spinners from day-one. When askedabout the track to be used for the second Test, Dhoni said in jest, "Itlooks good. But I will delay my decision for five days. If it doesn'tturn and assist the spinners, I can come back here and criticise it."

Pietersen masterclass gives Englandadvantage before spinners take overCenturies from Kevin Pietersen (186) and Alastair Cook (122) werebacked up by outstanding bowling from England's spinners as thetouring side took control of the second Test against India by theclose of day three in Mumbai.

Monty Panesar (5-61) and Graeme Swann (2-39) destroyed the Indian second innings as

the hosts closed on 117-7 - a lead of just31. Cook was the first to go to his centuryin the morning session, when he droveHarbhajan Singh to the long-offboundary, while Pietersen reached

three figures off the

spinner's next over when he reverse swept a four.In so doing, the duo both moved to 22 Test centuries - equalling

the most ever scored by an England batsman. It needed a fine delivery from Ravichandran Ashwin to induce

an edge off Cook to give MS Dhoni a catch behind the wicket.Johnny Bairstow was then dismissed in controversial manner

on the stroke of lunch when Gautam Gambhir took a catch off hishelmet grille at silly point.

Pietersen cut loose after reaching three figures, smashing thespinners for four sixes to go with his 20 other boundaries in total, before one extravagant shot too many led to his downfall - edgingan attempted drive behind after a 233-ball stay at the crease.

Only Cook and Pietersen reached 30 as England's last fivewickets fell for 31 but a lead of 86 looked considerable when Indialost five wickets before knocking off the deficit.

Panesar had Virender Sehwag (9) caught at slip beforeCheteshwar Pujara (6) was well caught at short leg. Sachin Tendulkar(8) fell cheaply on his home ground for the second time in the matchwhen he played back to Panesar and was trapped lbw. Virat Kohli (7)then hit a full toss to mid-off to give Swann his second victim.Yuvraj Singh (8) tamely gloved Panesar to short leg with India stilltrailing by eight runs.

India skipper MS Dhoni (6) edged Panesar to slip 15 minutesbefore the close and then the left-armer completed his second five-wicket haul of the match when Ashwin (11) holed out to deep extracover. Opener Gambhir remained resolute on 53 not out, reachinghis half-century in the final over of the day off 105 balls, but he isrunning out of batting partners.
