Timing can be everything and for

    Widden Stud and fellow Magic

    Millions consignor Eureka Stud

    yesterday’s Gold Coast two-year-old

races, won by Swift Witness (Star Witness) and

    Finance Tycoon (Written Tycoon) respectively,

provided an all-important pedigree update for

    the duo’s siblings.

Swift Witness, a Gai Waterhouse and Adrian

Bott-trained filly, was the first to guarantee her

place in the Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL,

1200m) with a startling performance in the

$125,000 Aquis Gold Pearl (1100m) to surge

into $7 third favourite for Saturday’s $2 million

    feature. Continued on page 3>>

    Widden Stud, who sold Swift

Witness for $260,000 at last year’s Magic Millions sale, offers her brother

as Lot 871, the first horse through the ring in the fifth Book 1 session, and

yesterday’s performance only added to his appeal.

    “Swift Witness

    was very impressive

    today and she will be

    a leading contender

    in the Magic Millions

    and, given the full-

    brother sells next

    Saturday night, it has

    a real sense of timing

    about it,” Widden

    Stud principal Antony

    Thompson said

    yesterday.

“It’ll be a great day next Saturday and we look forward to selling a

    lovely colt.”

The yearling colt is the sixth foal out of the winning mare Taylor’s

Command (Commands), a half-sister to the Group 2 winner So Pristine

(Zabeel) and Listed winner Restored (Red Ransom), who is also the dam of

Swift Witness’ stakes-placed former stablemate Terminology (Star Witness).

“Taylor’s Commands has been to Star Witness on three occasions

and the first two are on the track with Gai and Adrian. Terminology ran

very well in the Wyong Magic Millions and as we’ve seen Swift Witness

improved from that good effort first-up and was very dominant there

    today,” said Thompson.

“It’s upwards and onwards for Gai and Adrian and everyone involved

    in Swift Witness.”

    Tackling the $2 million Magic

    Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1200m)

    on a week’s back-up has become

a proven trend in recent years

with four of the last six winners successful on a

    seven-day return.

Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m) winner

Finance Tycoon (Written Tycoon) and Wyong

Magic Millions 2YO Classic (RL, 1100m)

placegetter Swift Witness (Star Witness) will

attempt to follow in their footsteps after they

won the Aquis Gold Nugget (1100m) and

the Aquis Gold Pearl (1100m) respectively

    yesterday.

The fillies were first to take to the Gold

Coast track, although the race was pushed back

more than half an hour after apprentice Justin

Huxtable was kicked by one of the clerks of the

course. It was reported that he had a broken rib

while doctors were concerned about his kidney

    and spleen.

While the Gold Pearl was a competitive

betting race, with six of the ten runners in single

figures, on the track it was a one-act affair as

the Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott-trained

Swift Witness dominated her rivals, racing clear

under Glen Boss to record a facile three-length

    success.

First-starter Glorious Ruby (Your Song) was

supported from $201 into $61 and impressed

finishing second for trainer Bryan Dais and

apprentice rider Leah Kilner, with favourite

Miss Hipstar (Star Turn) a solid third having not

led for the first time in her career.

Swift Witness, who was well-beaten by

Magic Millions 2YO Classic favourite She’s All

Class (I Am Invincible) at Wyong, showed the

benefit of that debut performance with her easy

victory yesterday. In the process, she ensured

that it would not be the first Classic since 2011

to be missing a Tulloch Lodge representative.

Waterhouse has won four Magic Millions

Classics - with Assertive Lad (Zeditave),

    Excellerator (Marscay), Dance Hero (Danzero)

and Driefontein (Fastnet Rock) - but Bott is

yet to taste success. Last year, the race saw the

stable’s Farnan (Not A Single Doubt) face his

only defeat at two, coming back to sweep the

Silver Slipper Stakes (Gr 2, 1100m), the Todman

Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) and the Golden Slipper

    Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m).

Bott said post-race that he’s been impressed

with the manner in which she has continued to

improve, particularly after the pre-race incident

with Huxtable and the ensuing delay.

“It was good to see the improvement with

the blinkers, we came up here thinking she had

the ability to be here and deserved a spot in the

field so it will be good to see her take her place,”

Bott said. “It was a bit of an ask for her to have

her first race in the Wyong Magic Millions, she

got a little bit lost there but she still found the

    line strongly.

“Today she was a bit reactive to a few horses

shifting out but once she really balanced up

and got focused on the task, we were able to

see a nice turn of foot. It wasn’t easy with what

happened pre-race but she handled herself

remarkably well, she went back to the stalls and

    was nice and relaxed.”

With Boss already committed to Debutant

Stakes (Listed, 1000m) winner Fake Love (I Am

Invincible) next weekend, Brenton Avdulla will

take the mount on Swift Witness.

Just over half an hour later, it was the turn

of the colts and geldings. Demonstrating just

how important a lead-up race the Gold Nugget

has become, the contest attracted the winner of

Sydney’s leading race for the males during the

spring, the Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m), taking

on the victor of Melbourne’s premier juvenile

contest, the Maribyrnong Plate (Gr 3, 1000m).

    The Chris Waller-trained Shaquero (Shalaa)

and Lindsay Park’s Finance Tycoon lived up to

the billing as they engaged in a tremendous

stretch duel that saw the Melbourne colt prevail

by a head under Luke Nolen, with a further

length and three-quarters back to first-starter

Jackson On Time (Sebring) in third.

    Finance Tycoon’s co-trainer Ben Hayes

will be aiming to do something his uncle Peter

    could - with Catnipped (Rory’s Jester) in 1998 -

but that his father, Hong Kong handler David,

couldn’t by taking the Magic Millions 2YO

    Classic next week.

“It was a very good job by the horse. He

never really went out of work. He’s been in

work since the spring carnival and he’s just kept

ticking over,” the younger Hayes said.

“I thought it was a great ride by Luke. He

jumped well and put himself in a good position

and it just looked to me that he stargazed a bit and

didn’t quite know how to put them away, but he

got there on the line, which is what counts.

“Today he was only 80 per cent fit. We

didn’t have him wound up to win, because he’s

already qualified for the Magic Millions. If he

pulls up well, I think he’s a great chance. I’m

really looking forward to it and it’s a big thrill.

“If you look at him in the mounting yard he

    looks like a three-year-old. He’s got a big hip

and he just looks like he’s going to improve.

“He’s kept stepping up to the mark for

us, he’s very exciting and I think he’s a really

    genuine chance.”

TAB shortened Swift Witness into $7,

joining Phelan Ready Stakes (Listed, 1000m)

    and B J McLachlan Stakes (Gr 3, 1200m) winner

Alpine Edge (Better Than Ready) on the second

line of betting, behind She’s All Class at $4.

    Finance Tycoon is at $9 with Shaquero at $11;

all other horses are at $13 or beyond.

Waller could saddle up as many as three

runners in She’s All Class, Shaquero and Ranch

Hand (Fastnet Rock) as he seeks to win his first

Magic Millions 2YO Classic, while first-season

trainer Annabel Neasham - with Ghostwriter (I

Am Invincible) and Queen Of Wizardry (Not A

Single Doubt) - is the other likely to have more

    than one starter.

Final acceptances will be taken at 11am

    tomorrow morning.

Sydney Cup for Spirit RidgeThe summer and the winter - the periods

deemed the off-season as far as Sydney and

Melbourne goes - invariably throws up a horse.

That mantle this summer belongs to the Mark

    Newnham-prepared Spirit Ridge (6 g Nathaniel

    - Tates Creek by Rahy), who added yesterday’s

January Cup (Listed, 2000m) to his win in the

Summer Cup (Gr 3, 2000m) last month.

The English import was sent off the $3.10

    favourite yesterday and won comfortably,

    overhauling the pace-setting Wolfe (Novellist)

to score by three-quarters of a length. Mr

Marathon Man (So You Think) bounced back to

    form, finishing third.

"I think the way they ran it probably turned it

into a little bit of a sprint home," Newnham said.

"He was at his top at the top of the straight, but you

could see his staying qualities shine through late.

"He's a real Euro stayer, clean winded and

doesn't take long to come up. He showed today

how strong he was on the line that further is not

    going to be an issue.

"The best part of his race was on the line so into

the autumn getting up to the mile and a half and

maybe even a Sydney Cup might be on the agenda.”

By King George VI and Queen Elizabeth

Stakes (Gr 1, 1m 4f) winner Nathaniel (Galileo),

sire of champion mare Enable, out of dual

Grade 1-winning American mare Tates Creek

(Rahy), Spirit Ridge shapes as a likely stayer and

a horse bound for better things.

In Melbourne, Never Again (6 g High

Chaparral - Rollon Rose by Encosta De Lago)

made the leap from Benchmark 78 company

to stakes grade yesterday, taking the Chester

Manifold Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at Flemington.

For much of 2020, the Clinton McDonald-

trained Never Again had raced in open company

    without success, but the confidence-boosting

Caulfield win on Boxing Day seemed to work

wonders as he scored his biggest career victory.

    He defeated Flemington 1400-metre

specialist Vassilator (Zacinto) by a neck with

Group 2 winner Brave Song (Your Song) third,

a further neck away. Odds-on favourite Riding

The Wave (Malibu Moon) finished fifth, a length

and three quarters from the winner.

McDonald was celebrating the $84,000 first

prize cheque, given he is owned by his mother

Margaret and races in the family’s famous red

and black hoops and white cap that have been

carried by horses like Magari (Maybe Lad) and

    Weekend Hussler (Hussonet).

"We own the horse and there's plenty of

reasons to be clapping. It was a good result for

the family," McDonald said. "To be fair it was a

rating race of 95 - I think that was the top rating

today - so at 85 he got in well at the weights, it's

good prize-money and we'll take it."

Yesterday’s win took Never Again’s record

to seven wins and four placings from 27

starts with earnings up to $360,400. He was

    a $140,000 2016 Inglis Melbourne Premier

Yearling Sale graduate, coming out of Maluka

    Thoroughbreds’ famed yearling academy.

Never Again became the 131st individual

stakes winner for the late High Chaparral

(Sadler’s Wells) and the first stakes winner

for dam Rollon Rose (Encosta De Lago), a

    half-sister to McDonald’s three-time Group 1

    winner Regal Roller (Regal Classic).

Rollon Rose died in 2018, having only produced

two foals after Never Again - brothers Spare Change

(Reward For Effort) and No Change.

    Three for Extreme Choice

Abseiler (2 g ex Wanted Lady by Wanted)

became the third winner from Extreme

Choice's (Not A Single Doubt) first crop when

taking out the Summer Twilight Series Plate

    (1000m) at Flemington yesterday. Trained

by Lloyd Kennewell, the newcomer beat

Telluride (Medaglia d’Oro) by a length, with

    Chameleon Choice (Extreme Choice) another

long neck away in third. Abseiler, who is raced

    by prominent Western Australian businessman

Santo Guagliardo’s Ridgeport syndicate, was a

    $70,000 purchase by Mathew Becker’s Group 1

Bloodstock from the Western Breeders Alliance

at the 2020 Magic Millions Perth Yearling Sale.

Extreme Choice, who stands at Newgate Farm

for a 2020 service fee of $22,000 (inc. GST), has

nine lots catalogued in the Magic Millions sale.

Abseiler impresses on debutCraig Newitt was full of praise for Summer

Twilight Series Plate (1000m) winner Abseiler,

drawing comparison between him and his dual

Group 1-winning sire Extreme Choice. Newitt,

who rode Extreme Choice to victory in the Blue

Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) and the Moir

    Stakes (Gr 1, 1000m), said: "He's definitely

inherited his size. He's not real big. He's got a

big ticker," Newitt said. Sent off at $18, Abseiler

raced down the outside of the Flemington

straight and proved too good for $4 favourite

Telluride, with fellow Extreme Choice debutant

Chameleon Choice in third. "He cantered

down to the gates like he's been here a hundred

times," Newitt said. "He didn't break out in a

sweat even before he walked into the gates. He

just travelled so professionally the whole way

and was going to win a long way out. He just

took everything in his stride, so professional,

so I'm tipping that he's got a pretty bright future

ahead of him," he said. The Lloyd Kennewell-

trained gelding was shortened into $26 for the

    Blue Diamond post-race.

Two for ShalaaSaasmit (2 f ex Touchy Greeley by Mr Greeley)

has continued the strong run by first season

sires including Arrowfield Stud’s shuttler Shalaa

(Invincible Spirit) with the Ciaron Maher and

    David Eustace-trained juvenile scoring on

debut at Murray Bridge yesterday to provide the

son of Invincible Spirit (Green Desert) with his

second first crop southern hemisphere winner,

joining ATC Breeders’ Plate (Gr 3, 1000m)

winner Shaquero. Saasmit ($5.50) took out

the Irongate Two-Year-Old Plate (1000m) by

three lengths over Garrire (I’m All The Talk).

Lamoree (Headwater) was another length and

a quarter away in third. Saasmit was purchased

by Melbourne Bloodstock for $21,000 from the

Vinery Stud draft at the Magic Millions Gold

Coast National Weanling Sale in 2019. Shalaa,

who sired 22 individual winners from his first

northern hemisphere crop, has 28 yearlings

on offer at the Magic Millions sale starting on

    Tuesday.

131 for High ChaparralNever Again’s (6 g ex Rollon Rose by Encosta

De Lago) defeat of Vassilator (Zacinto) in the

Chester Manifold Stakes (Listed, 1400m) at

Flemington yesterday brought up the 131st

Firmer track suits MalkovichMalkovich (Choisir) has put next month's $1

million Inglis Sprint (RL, 1200m) back on his

agenda after he recovered from a flop on a

heavy track at Gosford to take out yesterday’s

1100-metre Benchmark 72 contest at Randwick.

    The Bjorn Baker-trained three-year-old, who

was bought for $240,000 by Darby Bloodstock

from the Woodpark Stud draft at the 2019

Inglis Sydney Ready To Race Sale, led for the

majority of the trip and managed to hold off

Triple Ace (Helmet) by a head, with Frozen In

Time (Husson) a further two lengths back in

    third. Stable representative Stephen McLean

said Malkovich was back to his best on the drier

Soft 6 surface. "Rachel (King) came back in last

time and said the wheels were just spinning in

the mud so she looked after him," McLean said.

"We've come back today off a bit of a freshen

up, and back to the 1100 metres on a drier track

definitely helped him.” King, who has been

aboard Malkovich for all but one of his eight

starts, echoed McLean's thoughts. "He's back to

his usual self, a lot happier on this drier track,"

she said. "Last start when he wasn't happy on

the heavy track I wasn't hard on him because

I knew he's such a genuine horse. He always

gives me everything and it was really nice to see

    him bounce back today."

    Red-hot pair land another double

Flemington co-trainers Simon Zahra and Mat

Ellerton continued their remarkable start to

2021 with a winning double on their home track

yesterday. The stress-free double came courtesy

of Island Joy (Hinchinbrook), who took out the

1600-metre Benchmark 70 contest by four and

a quarter lengths, and fellow Benchmark 70

winner Zesty Belle (Denman), who won her

1100-metre contest by one and three-quarter

lengths. Island Joy’s only previous victory had

come on debut and Zahra said stepping up to

a mile was a big factor in getting her back in

the winner’s circle on her ninth appearance.

"She travelled nicely and gee she had a good

turn of- foot and the mile suits her," Zahra said.

On Zesty Belle, who made it two wins from

two starts this preparation, Zahra said: "She's

always shown us good ability. We'll just plot a

nice path and try and find a nice couple of races

for her.” Zesty Belle provided Damian Lane with

his first winner on his first day back riding after

he took a short break at home in Perth.

Kelly makes city breakthroughAlana Kelly’s decision to move to South Australia

for more riding opportunities paid off yesterday

    as the Andrew Noblet-trained Can’tforgetyou

(Von Costa De Hero) provided her with her

maiden metropolitan win at Murray Bridge.

The six-year-old mare took out the 1000-metre

    Benchmark 82 handicap, defeating Sizzlefly

(Sizzling) by a long neck with Irish Mint (Mint

Lane) a further long neck behind in third. “It’s

my first metropolitan winner and I’m so happy

to do it for a Ballarat trainer as well,” Kelly, who

has now ridden 62 winners, told Racing.com.

“We went from A to Z as far as the plan went as

soon as we jumped out of the barriers because

we didn’t intend to be that close but she just did

it so well today. She was tip-toeing late but she

    fought on very bravely.”

    NEW ZEALAND

Beauden back-to-back in Marton Cup Exciting stayer Beauden (6 g Bullbars - Belle

Femme by Zeditave) returned to the scene of

his 2020 triumph in the Marton Cup (Listed,

2200m) yesterday and made it back-to-

back victories in the race with a devastating

    performance. The Team Rogerson-trained six-

year-old came into the race off the back of an

emphatic four-length win in the Taupo Cup

(200m), where regular rider Ryan Elliot had set

him alight well before the home turn that day

to blitz his race rivals. Elliot adopted similar

tactics yesterday, racing clear for a three and a

half length win. Co-trainer Graeme Rogerson

was keen to see his charge put in a good

performance as he sets his sights on a tilt at the

Wellington Cup (Gr 3, 3200m) at the end of the

month. “He’s back to his best and we thought

he would be hard to beat today,” Rogerson said.

“He had a problem with his white cell count

during the spring and wasn’t quite right, but

he’s over that now and he’s racing accordingly.

He loves it at Awapuni and is a very good horse.

He’s a Cup horse and the win today won’t see

him rehandicapped for the Wellington Cup.

We’re going to sit down with his owner and

have a talk about it, but that’s the race I want to

see him in as I think he’s a true two-miler. We

ran today to give him that three weeks before

the Cup as that will suit him best, while the trip

back down to Wellington won’t hurt him either

    as he loves travelling.”

Callsign Mav too classy at AwapuniJohn Bary admitted his overwhelming feeling

was one of relief after he watched Tarzino Trophy

(Gr 1, 1400m) winner Callsign Mav (Atlante)

lump top-weight of 63 kilograms to an emphatic

victory over 1400 metres at Awapuni yesterday.

Rider Jonathan Riddell allowed the four-year-

old to find his feet in the early rush for positions,

settling in midfield off a strong tempo. Taken to

the outside in the run home by Riddell, Callsign

Mav took a few strides to get into his work before

producing a barnstorming finish under a hands

and heels ride to reel in his opponents and go on

to a clear-cut victory. “Relieved is the best way to

describe how I feel,” Bary said. “I’ve said all along

that he deserved the topweight, but weight can

stop a train. I think today he showed that he is

a very good horse. His work has been very good

and I was happier with him as he was a little

tighter than he was here before Christmas when

he got beaten. He still had a sweat and a think

about things, but nothing that would upset him.”

The Thorndon Mile (Gr 1, 1600m) or the BCD

Group Sprint (Gr 1, 1400m) are among options

going forward, with the Awapuni Gold Cup (Gr

    2, 2000m) the long-term aim.

Cavallo Veloce back to winning formCavallo Veloce (O’Reilly) put nearly two years’

worth of frustration behind him when he

bounced back to winning form with a dominant

display over 1200 metres at Awapuni yesterday.

    The Peter McKay-trained five-year-old had

last sighted the winner’s enclosure at the same

venue back in March, 2019, however a series

of niggling issues including problems with

his feet, had him struggling to find his best

form since then. McKay kept his faith in the

gelding and was rewarded as his charge came

with a barnstorming finish in the hands of his

son Shaun to down the well-favoured Challa

(Dissident) and register his fourth career

victory. “It’s been a frustrating run with him, so

it’s good to get a win today,” McKay said. “He

showed plenty as a three-year-old but spent

most of his four-year-old campaign with issues

after he jarred up racing at Hastings. We put

him aside and tried a few things, but he’s just

one of those horses that if it’s not a foot problem

then it’s boils or niggling things like that which

affect him.” Given a brief freshen-up after a

disappointing run on a hard track at Ellerslie

last month, McKay was hoping for a better effort

yesterday and got just what he was looking for.

“He likes tracks like Awapuni and Trentham, so

I was hopeful he could come out and go a good

race,” the trainer said. “He needs things to go his

way and he got that as they went pretty hard up

front and he could just peel off their backs and

come with one run. He carried 61 kilograms, but

he sprinted home really well which shows that

on his day he is still a very competitive horse.”

HK: Moreira has faith in Excellent Proposal Joao Moreira believes Excellent Proposal

(Exceed And Excel) has a strong winning

chance in today’s Class 2 Choi Hung Handicap

(1400m) at Sha Tin, a race that is a defining

contest for several Four-Year-Old Classic Series

    contenders. Leading the jockeys’ premiership

by 19 wins from nearest rival Zac Purton,

    Moreira partnered Enrich Delight (Medaglia

d'Oro) to a last-start victory but was already

committed to the John Size-trained Excellent

Proposal for this contest. Moreira is hoping his

loyalty to Excellent Proposal – winner of three

of his four Hong Kong starts after building an

identical record in Australia for Richard and

Michael Freedman – pays off. “At the moment,

there are some very nice, promising horses

out there and Enrich Delight is one of them,”

Moreira said. “We need to see how Excellent

Proposal goes first and then we’ll see who is

better. Excellent Proposal has been good, he

hasn’t had any problems. John just decided to

give him a break for the Four-Year-Old Series.

He’s been doing very well in trackwork and

his barrier trials in the last week have been

good enough for me to go to the races with

confidence. I wouldn’t be surprised if he wins.

He’s a very good horse and not 100 per cent yet

but I believe his winning chances are great.”

Nine for Trippi The fast-finishing Jet Dark (4 c ex Night Jet by

Jet Master) flew home against the rail to land

the Queen’s Plate (Gr 1, 1600m) at Kenilworth

yesterday, earning Trippi (End Sweep) his ninth

individual elite-level winner. The Justin Snaith-

trained colt, who finished fourth in the Cape

Guineas (Gr 1, 1600m) on his previous start, broke

through a small gap on the inside and sped home

under Grant Van Niekerk, seeing off Rainbow

Bridge (Ideal World) by three-quarters of a length,

with favourite Belgarion (Dynasty) a further half-

length behind in third. Trippi, 2016 Champion

Sire in South Africa, stands at Drakenstein Stud

    for an undisclosed fee.

SA: Golden Ducat too good in Premier Dual Grade 1 winner Golden Ducat (5 g

Philanthropist - Halfway To Heaven by Jet Master)

proved too good for his rivals in the Premier Trophy

(Gr 2, 1800m) at Kenilworth last night. The Eric

Sands-trained gelding led for the majority of the trip

under Warren Kennedy but had to fight back in the

closing stages after being briefly headed by Sachdev

(Silvano). The favourite got up to win by a head, with

African Night Sky (Dynasty) a further three-quarters

of a length back in third. Golden Ducat is the third

foal out of remarkable mare Halfway To Heaven,

whose first three foals, Rainbow Bridge (Ideal

Ducat, have all won at the highest level.

two and a quarter lengths between her and the

runner-up Clouds Unfold (What A Winter), with

in the country. Cape Thoroughbred Sales was

scheduled to stage the event at the De Grendel

    pragmatic approach. Grant Knowles, marketing

and bloodstock director of CTS, said: "This has

taken a great deal of thought and consideration.

After consultation with the majority of vendors,

I believe that it will be in everyone’s best interest

to postpone our sale for roughly six weeks. We

    anticipate further restrictions on gatherings,

both indoor and outdoor, affecting capacity

at the De Grendel restaurant and the sales

marquee. Additionally, we have concerns about

    accommodating grooms from 28 individual

    vendors at the sales venue."

    Thoroughbred Industry Careers

    (TIC) has expressed grave concerns

    about the staffing shortage in

    Australia, with the not-for-profit

    organisation - responsible for promoting

careers in racing and breeding - issuing an

appeal for further funding from industry

    participants.

The thoroughbred staffing debate has come

to the fore this week, with leading trainer Chris

Waller among those suggesting early trackwork

start times are directly influencing the number

of young people willing to enter the industry.

In an interview with The Sydney Morning

    Herald, the Rosehill-based trainer questioned

whether parents would want their children to

start work at 3am and noted how, in a city of

over five million people, only children with a

love for horses are keen to work in the industry,

and that number is ever decreasing.

    Stables and breeding operations have

long relied on overseas workers to help fill the

staffing void, but with Covid-19 restricting travel

to Australia in 2020 and into the immediate

future, it is a growing concern which must be

    filled by alternative means.

TIC, founded in late 2018, provides a

    12-month educational programme, the

Explorer Cadetship, to encourage young people

to opt for a career in the industry.

They have put 20 young people through that

programme over the last two years, however

TIC chief executive Lindy Maurice is calling

for further support to enable them to continue

their work and increase their numbers of

participants amid a serious shortage of industry

    staff.

“I would say we’re at crisis point,” Maurice

said. “Covid has really left us very exposed,

because we’ve relied heavily on overseas

    workers for so long.

“We haven’t really done a lot here

developing our own workforce, so now we

haven’t got this influx of backpackers or people

on visas working on stud farms for yearling

sales or in stables, it has left us really exposed.

“I get calls all the time from leading trainers

and studs going, ‘God, have you got anyone for

    us?’

“Things have been pretty bad for the last

five or six years, it’s been building. Prue Hayes

from Lindsay Park said to me the other day:

‘we’re not at code red, we’re at code purple - we

    are in such dire straits’.”

In 2018, TIC was founded with the backing

of seven industry heavyweights: the Australian

Turf Club, Chris Waller Racing, McEvoy

Mitchell Racing, Gai Waterhouse and Adrian

Bott Racing, Lindsay Park Racing, Arrowfield

    and Godolphin.

However, despite the contributions of their

founding partners enabling dreams to become

a reality for many young people joining the

    thoroughbred industry, Maurice has expressed

the need for a wider industry contribution to

    fund the work of TIC.

“Initially we got seven major players in

Australia to seek funds and get it started,”

    Maurice explained.

“Now, we need to source more funding. We

need to open it up for further industry support

    to keep us rolling.

“We are wanting to bridge the gap between

our industry and the future workforce, because

in Australia we don’t have a British Racing

School or a Careers In Racing team (a UK-

based recruitment initiative, run by the British

    Horseracing Authority).

“I did a research document when I first

decided we needed to do more in this country

and I flew to England and Ireland and did a

review of what they do over there.

“So we are essentially starting from scratch

and we are really just becoming that visual

organisation for young people to see us, to

know that there is an industry where there is

a career, and then someone to contact if they

are interested in working with horses in the

    thoroughbred industry.

“We are ten years behind Britain and

Ireland, or more. We didn’t have any grassroot

    strategies until we came along.”

Maurice gave further detail of the Explorer

Cadetship, providing examples of graduates who

are already progressing their careers in the industry.

“We came up with this explorer programme,

which is a 12-month educational programme for

    young people,” she said.

“We put them into boot camp for three

months, we get them work ready, then we send

them to a leading stable for four and a half

months, then we swap them over to a stud farm

for four and a half months.

“We’ve had 70 kids on that programme in

two years and a lot of those are now strapping

them are running boutique stud farms.

“Each state PRA (principal racing authority)

does little bits and pieces here and there

Le Grange learned on Friday that his former

mentor Patrick Shaw’s father had passed away

    in South Africa.

With Le Grange as his right-hand man

right through the overseas stint, Shaw trained

with great success at Kranji from 2001 to 2016,

claiming the Singapore champion trainer title

in 2011 as well as overseeing the career of

    sprinting star Rocket Man (Viscount).

    “Leatherhead’s record-breaking win was

just fantastic, both for me and the owner Rudy

Mendoza, who has become a great supporter of

mine and Singapore racing,” said Le Grange.

    “It’s a well-deserved accolade for both the

horse and Rudy, and how not to mention Ruan

Maia’s strike-rate on Polytrack, which is just

outstanding. Good old Mighty Emperor making

it a 1-2 for us is such a lovely bonus, too.

“But all this is put in perspective with the

sad news that Pat’s dad Bernie passed away in

South Africa last night. I’ve known Bernie very

well and I’m still trying to come to terms with

the fact he’s not with us anymore – this one’s for

    you, Bernie.”

    Leatherhead ($26) had joint-favourite

Asaad (Orpen) in his sights in a one-out one-

back spot from the start, and once he took

closer order while approaching the home turn,

the issue was soon a foregone conclusion.

With Alexander Horatio (Toronado) on the

inside having turned sparring partner to Asaad

at the head of affairs, they were soon left as

sitting ducks when Leatherhead pounced on

    them upon straightening.

Given his full head by Maia, the five-

year-old cleared out to an emphatic two and

three-quarter length win from his fast-closing

stablemate Mighty Emperor (Kahal) who just

pipped Asaad for the perfect Le Grange result.

Entertainer keeps the Maia show going

Ruan Maia cemented further his reputation

as an astute Polytrack rider with yet another

win notched on the alternative track.

From 67 winners in 365 rides at Kranji thus

far, 40 of them have occurred on Polytrack,

including all three legs of his riding treble at the

    opening day on January 3.

Once the Brazilian sent the well-backed

Entertainer (Zoustar) straight to the lead in

yesterday's $20,000 open maiden race over

1100 metres, it was as good as a one-way ticket

    for the four-year-old.

    The Mark Walker-trained gelding went

on to open his account by a length and three-

quarters from longshot Eight Ball (Stryker) with

Don’t Tell Tilly (Testa Rossa) third another half-

    length away.

“I rode this horse in a restricted maiden

race last time, and I know him quite well,” said

    Maia.

“At his last start, he ran in a Class 4 race and

showed good form. Today I had good control of

the race in front and he won a very nice race.”

An AUD$150,000 purchase as a yearling,

Entertainer raced four times for Chris Waller

for one second, and has now brought up his

first win for the Fortuna NZ Racing Stable at his

    fifth Kranji start.

Runner-up to Vlad Duric on the jockey’s

premiership at his first Singapore season last

year, Maia has already given himself every

chance of exacting revenge on the Australian

    with a fourth winner.

    It’s French jockey Louis-Philippe Beuzelin

who currently holds the second spot, two

winners behind, while Duric is sitting out his

second 2021 meeting through a careless riding

    suspension.

See enjoys comeback win with a Beer

Troy See turned back the clock after scoring

aboard Beer Garden (Proisir) to bring up his

first winner since returning from a year and a

    half on the sidelines.

An inspired ride on the $84 outsider at

only See’s second Kranji meeting back had the

    2018 Singapore champion apprentice jockey

returning with a beaming smile at the weigh-in

    under the driving rain.

“I’ve been working like a cow and eating

like a peasant,” said See whose win-meter had

stopped at 132 with Dragon High (Arlington) on

    March 24, 2019.

“The first week, I was blowing and it was

frustrating as I couldn’t help the horses run

through their natural rhythm. I was out of sync,

but I feel a lot better this week.

“From 56 kilograms, I’m glad I was able to

make it at 53.5 kilograms today, and I reckon

that is not the bottom yet. I think I can still drop

    to 52.5 kilograms.

“Still, I thought I’d have another quiet day

today. I certainly didn’t give Beer Garden much

of a chance from that draw (11), but he proved

    me wrong.”

Analysis: Conceding one runner 3kg and the rest 7kg, Beauden made light of his 60kg and gave this field a drubbing to make it back-to-back Marton Cups and his tenth career win. He sat third with a lap to run, as well as third starting the back straight. Ryan Elliot gave him a lovely run, a length off the leader leaving the back straight, then applied the pressure from the 600m. Rounding into the home straight he shot away, had them by four at the 200m, and they were never going to catch him, easing down near the line yet still three and half lengths up. Grand Bouquet was fifth (rails) past the 1200m, still fifth inside the 600m, held the rail starting the run home and finished best of the rest for a distant second. The Good Fight sat sixth (one out) leaving

the back straight, lost ground near the 600m, and turned for home midfield before slogging it out in the straight for third. Pacemaker Sergeant Blast was caught by the winner inside the 600m, second turning in, then battled away for fourth. [LJ]

Analysis: The Clinton McDonald-trained gelding Never Again advanced from his good second-up win in a Benchmark 78 (1400m) at Caulfield on December 26 to record his first stakes success here, his seventh win in 27 starts. He was ridden patiently by Michael Walker and settled in second-last place in the seven-runner field, tracking a solid tempo (first 800m 46.91), before improving (deep) rounding the turn. He then finished resolutely, grabbed the lead in the closing stages and went on to win well. Vassilator was also ridden quietly and was settled in last place by Damien Oliver before making ground along the inner at the turn. He took a split at the 200m and then finished well to claim second, looking a shade unlucky. Brave Song had a nice trip in fourth place on the rails from his inside barrier (1). He took a gap at the 300m, hit the front at the 100m, and then fought well for a close-up third. Guizot raced in fifth place (one off the rails), commenced his move at the 300m, and then battled well for (1.6 lengths) fourth. The favourite Riding The Waves was smartly away and attempted to lead before racing outside the leader (Coming Around) at a quick pace. He briefly went to the front at the 200m but his early efforts told and he then held on for (1.8 lengths) fifth. [KB]
