Our Mission is to be about Christ’s work by: welcoming the stranger; celebrating all of life; accepting, forgiving and loving each other; providing a place to grow in mind and spirit; teaching and living the scriptures; seeking and trusting God’s guidance; and serving Christ in all persons.

September 2015

The Mortgage is Burning….! Thanks to the generosity of this parish over the years, and particularly to one of our former parishioners, the vestry voted to pay off our mortgage early and, for the time being, St. Philip’s is DEBT-FREE!! As many of you know, about seven years ago, St. Philip’s received astonishing news that Marie Hoerner had included St. Philip’s in her estate. We are one of three organizations in the Jackson area that receive a yearly contribution St. Philip’s designates a portion of her gift each year to our outreach ministry and we have spent the funds on camp scholarships, prison ministry, habitat for humanity, McLeod school needs and in a variety of other ways that make a difference in the lives of those we touch. For the past several years, her gift has also been the main contribution to a number of deferred maintenance projects as well as payment toward our mortgage. Because of Marie’s gift, we have been able to re-roof several buildings on our property, purchase air conditioning units for the church and update our parish hall facilities. This August, St. Philip’s received a check for $88,000 from the Marie Hoerner estate. I am always overwhelmed and humbled by her generosity and she is a wonderful example of how our financial decisions now are able to affect the life of a sacred community forever. I encourage you to think about remembering St. Philip’s in your own financial planning so that this place which means so much to us now can bring meaning and spiritual formation to the generations that follow. We will burn our mortgage note during our Goat Roast festivities this year; some have suggested we call it the Goat/Note Roast 2015! More on that later… For Marie, for all of you who love St. Philip’s and for God’s grace that placed me among you five years ago this week, I am so thankful. Peace, Kyle+

Sunday School News

Thank you to all that have helped this summer so our children could continue to enjoy Sunday School. We will have a Sunday School “holiday” on Sunday, September 6th, and Fall Sunday School will begin on September 13th.

If you would like to help or teach Catechesis (4 - 6 year olds) or Living the Good News (7-9 years), please volunteer.

We set it up so you teach or help once every 4 - 6 weeks, and not on Goat Roast, Palm Sunday, Easter, Pentecost, and other feast days during which we feel the children need to be in “big church.”

Children and families are the life blood of this church. Please volunteer to help these little ones in their Christian formation.

Thank You! Lynda [email protected]

First Wednesday Programs at St. Philip’s

September 2 Now Departing Social Media Flight #2015:

Aisle seat or Window seat Boty McDonald, Ridgeland City Prosecutor

From the first books to Facebook: tracing the arc of media from the invention of the printing press to the proliferation of the smart phone. Boty shares his take on profound power of the smart phone -- as a personal "telescope" on the world, as a customized "microscope" for information, and as a sweet, neat way to build deep connections and community. Listen how this old dad came to embrace and enjoy -- and use! -- Instagram and Snapchat!

October 7 Tigers, Bears and Bulldogs, Oh My:

The Strange Hidden History of College Football Mascots Jim Woodrick, Director of Mississippi Department of

Archives and History

Football, it has been said, is like religion in the South. If true, then mascots are among the most cherished symbols of the “faithful.” From Bully to Mike the Tiger and Big Al, college mascots inspire a great deal of passion among fans, young and old alike. But few know the true origin of these foam-headed heroes. Historian Jim Woodrick will bring a few of these stories to light, and some might just surprise you!

November 7 Social Media, Part Deux

Many of us are connected to Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Snap-chat and other forms of social media. Not surprisingly, there are many who have steadfastly refused to get on board at first, and then are amazed by how the world gets both bigger and smaller through this media, whether it’s finding old high school friends, or reading New York Times articles on Twitter or retrieving long lost recipes on Pinterest. In addition, increasingly St. Philip’s is using social media for publicity, relaying information and communication. If you do not belong to any social media forums, we’d like to help you sign up! In addition, we will speak about Access, a new online program St. Philip’s that can send emails, provide an online directory, update information and make online giving easier.

December 2 Stained Glass, Advent Spirituality

Andy Young, Owner of Pearl River Glass

Artist live with the idea of advent. We are in anticipate of the crea-tive impulse that will turn an idea into a real form, whether paint-ing, sculpture, glass, ceramics or weaving. Andy will talk about stained glass commissions for churches and where theological ideas come from and how they are expressed.

Page 4: A Letter to the Philippianss3.amazonaws.com/dfc_attachments/public/documents/...community forever. I encourage you to think about remembering St. Philip’s in your own financial planning

Welcomers/Greeters Meeting The Welcomers/ Greeters will have a brief meeting following our next First Wednesday dinner and presentation on Wed Sept 2. We will meet at 7 pm and discuss some new ideas for welcoming guests as they come to St. Philip's. Anyone interested in this important ministry is welcome to attend. Call me with any questions! Altar Guild News Ladies, we did it again! The Rummage Sale was once again very successful as well as a lot of fun. We made $6,432.89 selling our trash & treasurers, and I hope you all feel as good about it as I do. Thank you all, Men’s Breakfast Group, and all you ladies who worked so hard to make it a grand sale. Lots coming up: Fall Altar Guild meeting September 19th, at 10:00 a.m. at the church. We have plenty to discuss and get ready for. We’ll have lunch at 12:00 noon and the LEMs will meet at 1:00 p.m. This year I think we’ll bring food, sandwiches, salads, etc., and eat the way we did at the rummage sale. We have all these good cooks, and it was so enjoyable day by day never knowing what you’d have for lunch. We’ll talk before the 19th so we won’t have all desserts. The fall is our long green season and as it comes to an end, we have Advent, our time to be reflective, followed by Christmas. This year the 25th is on a Friday. When do we hang the greens? We’ll have plenty to talk about and decide. Please come, and if you’re one of these ladies holding back, don’t hold back any longer. Now is the time to join this group and be a part of all the ladies do. See you all soon! Love, Lucette

ATTENTION:

St. Philip’s Licensed Lay Eucharist Ministers Saturday, September 19th

1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. All licensed lay readers are encouraged to come to a refresher meeting in the church. We've added new responsibilities for the LEMs and I want to sure everyone is on the same page. It won't take long, but please mark your calendars for this! In addition, David and Kyle together will do additional instruction on reading the scripture lessons with all the LEMs. We would really like to see everyone present for this for tips and feedback. Thank you! All Licensed Lay Leaders are urged to attend. This training will count toward recertification at the end of 2015.

Ultreya News De Colores!!

What is a Cursillo Weekend?

Cursillo comes from the Spanish and means "a short course". The Cursillo Movement is introduced over a consecutive seventy-two hour period called a "Three Day Weekend." During the three day weekend, which begins Thursday evening and ends Sunday afternoon, a team of Episcopal Priests and/or Deacons and lay personnel present a series of talks to the entire group. The team and candidates discuss these talks in small groups. The discussions provide an opportunity to share insights about the presentations and hear how others received that same presentation. The talks and discussions cover a variety of topics including:

The lay person's role within the Church Meaning of grace and sacraments Importance of prayer and the study of God Christian leadership and living Christianity in community Our call to transform the very environments in which we

live The importance of supporting one another in our efforts

to live a truly Christian life

In addition, throughout the weekend the participants will attend daily Eucharist. Typically, by the end of the weekend, all participants and staffers have a deeper relationship with Jesus Christ and a better understanding of the power of the Holy Spirit. Also, everyone will leave the weekend having met new friends throughout the state. The next Cursillo #129 weekend will be held September 24-27, 2015 at Gray Center in Canton. We have a few St. Philippians attending and if you are interested, don't hesitate to ask someone. The Ultreya meeting this month is Monday, September 28th beginning at 6:30. We will begin with snacks/refreshments and the program will start at 7:00pm. As always, would love for you to bring a friend, snack and or just yourself! The location of the meeting is at Charmant Clubhouse is located at 100 Charmant Place in Ridgeland (off Lake Harbor Drive). Drive close to the gate and it will open automatically.

The Giving of Altar Flowers on Sunday is a wonderful way to celebrate and/or remember our loved ones. There are many open dates on the calendar (located on the bulletin board, in the narthex.)

We encourage at least two people to give flowers each Sunday. The cost is $45.00 per person/family.
